Why are ferns regularly over-represented on state and provincial rare plant lists?

ABSTRACT Several recent studies have suggested that rare species are not randomly distributed throughout plant taxa. This would appear to apply to North American ferns, which are frequently over-represented on local lists of rare plant species. However, such lists often paint a skewed portrait of the true situation because of our tendency to recognize the rarity of well-known and charismatic species while ignoring that of lesser-known or less-appreciated species. In order to verify if this over-representation of ferns is a real and consistent trend throughout local floras in North America, we used data from what we consider to be the most complete and objective available database: NatureServe Explorer (http://www.natureserve.org/explorer/). We compiled data on total vascular plant species, total fern species, as well as rare vascular plant species and rare fern species for each North American subnational (Canadian province or US state) flora. Rare species were defined as those belonging to one of NatureServe's ,at risk' categories. The null hypothesis that the contribution of rare ferns to total rare species did not differ from their contribution to the total vascular flora was assessed using ,2. Out of 64 subnational floras, we obtained significantly higher values than expected in 28 cases, and significantly lower in only one case. Similar trends hold true for individual fern families. These tendencies could be related to several factors of anthropogenic, biological, climatological, evolutionary, and geographical origin. However, we believe that the main reason is related to scale, namely the geopolitical units at which rarity is often studied. Our results illustrate one of the problems of a parochial approach to conservation, where the perceived rarity of an entire taxon is exaggerated because of the scale at which rarity is addressed. RAPID GROWTH RESULTS IN INCREASED SUSCEPTIBILITY TO PREDATION IN MENIDIA MENIDIA

Abstract Several recent studies have demonstrated that rapid growth early in life leads to decreased physiological performance. Nearly all involved experiments over short time periods (<1 day) to control for potentially confounding effects of size. This approach, however, neglects the benefits an individual accrues by growing. The net effect of growth can only be evaluated over a longer interval in which rapidly growing individuals are allowed the time required to attain the expected benefits of large size. We used two populations of Menidia menidia with disparate intrinsic growth rates to address this issue. We compared growth and survivorship among populations subject to predation in mesocosms under ambient light and temperature conditions for a period of up to 30 days to address two questions: Do the growth rates of fish in these populations respond differently to the presence of predators? Is the previously demonstrated survival cost of growth counterbalanced by the benefits of increased size? We found that growth was insensitive to predation risk: neither population appeared to modify growth rates in response to predation levels. Moreover, the fast-growing population suffered significantly higher mortality throughout the trials despite being 40% larger than the slow-growing population at the experiment's end. These results confirm that the costs of rapid growth extend over prolonged intervals and are not ameliorated merely by the attainment of large size. [source]


PHYLOGENETICALLY NESTED COMPARISONS FOR TESTING CORRELATES OF SPECIES RICHNESS: A SIMULATION STUDY OF CONTINUOUS VARIABLES

Abstract., Explaining the uneven distribution of species among lineages is one of the oldest questions in evolution. Proposed correlations between biological traits and species diversity are routinely tested by making comparisons between phylogenetic sister clades. Several recent studies have used nested sister-clade comparisons to test hypotheses linking continuously varying traits, such as body size, with diversity. Evaluating the findings of these studies is complicated because they differ in the index of species richness difference used, the way in which trait differences were treated, and the statistical tests employed. In this paper, we use simulations to compare the performance of four species richness indices, two choices about the branch lengths used to estimate trait values for internal nodes and two statistical tests under a range of models of clade growth and character evolution. All four indices returned appropriate Type I error rates when the assumptions of the method were met and when branch lengths were set proportional to time. Only two of the indices were robust to the different evolutionary models and to different choices of branch lengths and statistical tests. These robust indices had comparable power under one nonnull scenario. Regression through the origin was consistently more powerful than the t -test, and the choice of branch lengths exerts a strong effect on both the validity and power. In the light of our simulations, we re-evaluate the findings of those who have previously used nested comparisons in the context of species richness. We provide a set of simple guidelines to maximize the performance of phylogenetically nested comparisons in tests of putative correlates of species richness. [source]


Activity and energetics of free-swimming fish: insights from electromyogram telemetry

Abstract Electromyogram (EMG) telemetry studies that involve remotely monitoring the locomotory activity and energetics of fish are contributing important information to the conservation and management of fisheries resources. Here, we outline the development of this rapidly evolving field and formulate the studies conducted that utilize this technology. To date, more than 60 studies have been conducted using EMG telemetry that spans 18 species. Several general trends were observed in the methodology of the studies that we have highlighted as standards that should be adopted associated with transmitter customization, electrode placement and surgical technique. Although numerous studies have been methodological, there are still some deficiencies in our basic understanding of issues such as the need for individual calibration and the method of reporting or transforming data. Increasingly, this technology is being applied to address issues in conservation, management and aquaculture production. At present, the technology has been most frequently applied to the study of animal activity or energetics and to migration. Several recent studies have also focused on addressing more basic questions in ecological and evolutionary biology (e.g. parental care dynamics) similar to the large body of literature that has been collected for other taxa (e.g. marine mammals, birds), using activity telemetry. Collectively, studies conducted using EMG telemetry have contributed important information on free-swimming fish that was previously difficult to obtain. EMG telemetry is particularly effective for examining behaviour at temporal and spatial scales that are difficult using other techniques. The development of an ultrasonic transmitter based on the same proven principles as those used in the current radio transmitter technology will permit studies in other environments (i.e. marine, brackish, deep water) and on different species of fish. We encourage the continued development and refinement of devices for monitoring the activity and energetics of free-swimming fish, and also encourage researchers to consider EMG telemetry as a tool for addressing questions that are not effectively answered with other techniques. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis: Selected practical issues in their evaluation and management,

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is among the most common causes of chronic liver disease in the western world. It is now recognized that these patients have myriad of important co-morbidities (e.g., diabetes, hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome). The workup of patients with suspected NAFLD should consist of excluding competing etiologies and systemic evaluation of metabolic comorbidities. NAFLD is histologically categorized into steatosis and steatohepatitis, two states with fairly dichotomous natural history. While significant progress has been made in terms of noninvasively predicting advanced fibrosis, insufficient progress has been made in predicting steatohepatitis. Currently, liver biopsy remains the gold standard for the histological stratification of NAFLD. While sustained weight loss can be effective to treat NASH, it is often difficult to achieve. Foregut bariatric surgery can be quite effective in improving hepatic histology in selected patients without liver failure or significant portal hypertension. Thiazolidinediones have shown promise and the results from the ongoing, large multicenter study should become available soon. Large multicenter studies of CB, receptor anatagonists are also underway but their results will not be available for several years. Several recent studies have highlighted that cardiovascular disease is the single most important cause of morbidity and mortality in this patient population. Conclusion: Health care providers should not only focus on liver disease but also concentrate on aggressively modifying and treating their cardiovascular risk factors. (HEPATOLOGY 2009;49:306-317.) Do Australian companies manage earnings to meet simple earnings benchmarks?

Measurement error in unexpected accruals is an important problem for empirical earnings management research. Several recent studies avoid this problem by examining the pooled, cross,sectional distribution of reported earnings. Discontinuities in the distribution of reported earnings around key earnings thresholds may indicate the exercise of management discretion (i.e. earnings management). We apply this approach to the detection of earnings management by Australian firms. Our results generally indicate significantly more small earnings increases and small profits than expected and conversely, considerably fewer small earnings decreases and small losses than expected. These results are much stronger for larger Australian firms. We undertake an exploratory analysis of alternative explanations for our results and find some evidence consistent with management signalling its inside knowledge about the firm's expected future profitability to smooth earnings, as opposed to ,management intent to deceive' as an explanation for our results. Summary Research on CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells (Treg) has gathered momentum over the last five years but many aspects of their fundamental biology remain elusive. Treg have been considered to be ,naturally anergic' based on their failure to proliferate in response to T-cell receptor ligation in vitro. Several recent studies challenge this view and demonstrate a robust proliferative capacity for CD25+ cells. The significance of this finding for Treg homeostasis and function is considered below. Synaptic localization of neuroligin 2 in the rodent retina: Comparative study with the dystroglycan-containing complex

Abstract Several recent studies have shown that neuroligin 2 (NL2), a component of the cell adhesion neurexins,neuroligins complex, is localized postsynaptically at hippocampal and other inhibitory synapses throughout the brain. Other studies have shown that components of the dystroglycan complex are also localized at a subset of inhibitory synapses and are coexpressed with NL2 in brain. These data prompted us to undertake a comparative study between the localization of NL2 and the dystroglycan complex in the rodent retina. First, we determined that NL2 mRNA is expressed both in the inner and in the outer nuclear layers. Second, we found that NL2 is localized both in the inner and in the outer synaptic plexiform layers. In the latter, the horseshoe-shaped pattern of NL2 and its extensive colocalization with RIM2, a component of the presynaptic active zone at ribbon synapses, argue that NL2 is localized presynaptically at photoreceptor terminals. Third, comparison of NL2 and the dystroglycan complex distribution patterns reveals that, despite their coexpression in the outer plexiform layer, they are spatially segregated within distinct domains of the photoreceptor terminals, where NL2 is selectively associated with the active zone and the dystroglycan complex is distally distributed in the lateral regions. Finally, we report that the dystroglycan deficiency in the mdx3cv mouse does not alter NL2 localization in the outer plexiform layer. These data show that the NL2- and dystroglycan-containing complexes are differentially localized in the presynaptic photoreceptor terminals and suggest that they may serve distinct functions in retina. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Is There a Genetic Basis for Health Disparities in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Disease?

Abstract The highest global prevalence rates for human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome have been recorded in southern Africa; in the United States, individuals of African descent are disproportionately affected by human immunodeficiency virus infection. Human immunodeficiency virus,infected individuals with African ancestry are also estimated to have a 17-fold or greater risk for developing human immunodeficiency virus,associated nephropathy in comparison with their counterparts of non-African descent. Several recent studies have implicated genetic alleles that are more frequent in populations of African descent and increase the risk of human immunodeficiency virus infection and the risk of human immunodeficiency virus,associated neuropathy (HIVAN). The supposition that persons of African descent are more susceptible to human immunodeficiency virus infection because of an underlying genetic predisposition is not supported by available evidence. However, strong, replicated data show that the increased risk for human immunodeficiency virus,associated nephropathy, as well as other major forms of kidney disease in individuals of African descent, is due in part to MYH9 (myosin, heavy chain 9, non-muscle) renal disease susceptibility alleles that are very frequent throughout sub-Saharan Africa but are infrequent or absent in non-Africans. Selection, drift, and demographic events shape the allelic architecture of the human genome: it is expected that these events will be reflected in geographic-specific differentiation in allele frequencies for a small subset of alleles that may be associated with either increased or reduced risk for complex and infectious diseases. The global pattern of gene identity variation reveals a history of long-range migrations, bottlenecks, and local mate exchange: Implications for biological race

Abstract Several recent studies have argued that human genetic variation conforms to a model of isolation by distance, whereas others see a predominant role for long-range migrations and bottlenecks. It is unclear whether either of these views fully describes the global pattern of human genetic variation. In this article, we use a coalescent-based simulation approach to compare the pattern of neutral genetic variation predicted by these views to the observed pattern estimated from neutral autosomal microsatellites assayed in 1,032 individuals from 53 globally-distributed populations. We find that neither view predicts every aspect of the observed pattern of variation on its own, but that a combination of the two does. Specifically, we demonstrate that the observed pattern of global gene identity variation is consistent with a history of serial population fissions, bottlenecks and long-range migrations associated with the peopling of major geographic regions, and gene flow between local populations. This history has produced a nested pattern of genetic structure that is inconsistent with the existence of independently evolving biological races. Negative Impact of Metabolic Syndrome on the Responsiveness to Sildenafil in Japanese Men

ABSTRACT Introduction., Several recent studies suggested that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) was higher in men with metabolic syndrome (MS). Aim., We analyzed the impact of MS on the responsiveness to sildenafil. Methods., A total of 133 ED patients were evaluated for the prevalence of MS and graded on severity of ED. MS was diagnosed according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition. The severity of ED was evaluated by the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. Hormonal parameters were measured for all patients, and the IIEF questionnaire was conducted after administration of eight tablets of 50-mg doses of sildenafil. If the scores to questions 3 and 4 of the IIEF were 4 or higher after administration, the patients were defined as responders to sildenafil. Main Outcome Measures., To clarify the negative impact of MS on the responsiveness to sildenafil. Results., The mean age of the patients was 56.9 years, and 25 patients were diagnosed with MS. The IIEF-erectile function score and the response rate for sildenafil decreased as the number of MS components increased. Logistic regression analysis showed that the presence of MS along with severity of ED and history of pelvic surgery were significant independent risk factors of nonresponse for sildenafil. The hazard ratio for the presence of MS was 3.30 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.17,9.73). No meaningful association was observed between total testosterone or free testosterone levels and MS in this population. Prospective evaluation of angiogenic, hypoxic and EGFR-related biomarkers in recurrent glioblastoma multiforme treated with cetuximab, bevacizumab and irinotecan

Several recent studies have demonstrated a beneficial effect of anti-angiogenic treatment with the vascular endothelial growth factor-neutralizing antibody bevacizumab in recurrent high-grade glioma. In the current study, immunohistochemical evaluation of biomarkers involved in angiogenesis, hypoxia and mediators of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway were investigated. Tumor tissue was obtained from a previous phase II study, treating recurrent primary glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients with the EGFR inhibitor cetuximab in combination with bevacizumab and irinotecan. Of the 37 patients with available tumor tissue, 29 were evaluable for response. We concurrently performed immunohistochemical stainings on tumor tissue from 21 GBM patients treated with bevacizumab and irinotecan. We found a tendency of correlation between the hypoxia-related markers, indicating that they share the same regulatory mechanisms. None of the EGFR-related biomarkers showed any significant correlations with each other. None of the biomarkers tested alone or in combination could identify a patient population likely to benefit from bevacizumab and irinotecan, with or without the addition of cetuximab. There is still an urgent need for one or more reliable and reproducible biomarkers able to predict the efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy. [source]

UNDERSTANDING HEALTH CARE EXPENDITURE USING AUSTRALIAN MEDICARE PAYMENTS DATA
In health economics and health care planning, the observation that age cohorts are generally positively correlated with per capita health expenditures is often cited as evidence that population ageing is the main driver of health care costs. Several recent studies, however, challenge this view. Zweifel et al. (1999) and Felder et al. (2000), for example, find that individuals incur the highest health care costs around the time before their death. Thus, they argue, it is proximity to death rather than ageing that is driving health care costs. This paper examines the issue by estimating a two-equation exact aggregation demand model using Australian Medicare payments data over an eight-year period (1994,2001). The results suggest that once proximity to death is accounted for, population ageing has either a negligible or even negative effect on health care demand. [source]

Purpose Numerous studies have examined the pattern of uveitis around the world. Most of them are from western countries, including the USA and countries in Europe, and Eastern Asia. The aim of this presentation is to review the epidemiological characteristics of uveitis in the the Middle East and North Africa. Methods The epidemiologic data on uveitis available from the Middle East and North Africa were reviewed. Results Several recent studies addressed the pattern of uveitis in different countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Tunisia. Uveitis was most often seen in adults with a peak age at presentation in the third and fourth decades. There was no dramatic difference in gender distribution. Anterior uveitis was the most common anatomic form of uveitis, but a high rate of posterior uveitis and panuveitis was reported. A definitive or presumed specific diagnosis could be established for 57-87% of patients. The most common infectious entities were herpetic anterior uveitis, toxoplasmosis, and tuberculosis (Saudi Arabia). The most common identifiable non-infectious entities included Behçet's disease and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. Conclusion Herpetic infection, toxoplasmosis, and tuberculosis are the most common infectious causes of uveitis in the Middle East and North Africa. Behçet's diease and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease are the most common non-infectious uveitic entities.HLA-B27 acute anterior uveitis, ocular sarcoidosis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis associated uveitis are less common than in western countries. Summary Factor H is an abundant plasma glycoprotein that plays a critical role in the regulation of the complement system in plasma and in the protection of host cells and tissues from damage by complement activation. Several recent studies have described the association of genetic variations of the complement factor H gene (CFH) with atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). This review summarizes our current knowledge of CFH genetics and examines the CFH genotype,phenotype correlations that are helping to understand the molecular basis underlying these renal and ocular pathologies. Connections between species diversity and genetic diversity

Abstract Species diversity and genetic diversity remain the nearly exclusive domains of community ecology and population genetics, respectively, despite repeated recognition in the literature over the past 30 years of close parallels between these two levels of diversity. Species diversity within communities and genetic diversity within populations are hypothesized to co-vary in space or time because of locality characteristics that influence the two levels of diversity via parallel processes, or because of direct effects of one level of diversity on the other via several different mechanisms. Here, we draw on a wide range of studies in ecology and evolution to examine the theoretical underpinnings of these hypotheses, review relevant empirical literature, and outline an agenda for future research. The plausibility of species diversity,genetic diversity relationships is supported by a variety of theoretical and empirical studies, and several recent studies provide direct, though preliminary support. Focusing on potential connections between species diversity and genetic diversity complements other approaches to synthesis at the ecology,evolution interface, and should contribute to conceptual unification of biodiversity research at the levels of genes and species. Translating nociceptor sensitivity: the role of axonal protein synthesis in nociceptor physiology

Abstract The increased sensitivity of peripheral pain-sensing neurons, or nociceptors, is a major cause of the sensation of pain that follows injury. This plasticity is thought to contribute to the maintenance of chronic pain states. Although we have a broad knowledge of the factors that stimulate changes in nociceptor sensitivity, the cellular mechanisms that underlie this plasticity are still poorly understood; however, they are likely to involve changes in gene expression required for the phenotypic and functional changes seen in nociceptive neurons after injury. While the regulation of gene expression at the transcriptional level has been studied extensively, the regulation of protein synthesis, which is also a tightly controlled process, has only recently received more attention. Despite the established role of protein synthesis in the plasticity of neuronal cell bodies and dendrites, little attention has been paid to the role of translation control in mature undamaged axons. In this regard, several recent studies have demonstrated that the control of protein synthesis within the axonal compartment is crucial for the normal function and regulation of sensitivity of nociceptors. Pathways and proteins regulating this process, such as the mammalian target of rapamycin signaling cascade and the fragile X mental retardation protein, have recently been identified. We review here recent evidence for the regulation of protein synthesis within a nociceptor's axonal compartment and its contribution to this neuron's plasticity. We believe that an increased understanding of this process will lead to the identification of novel targets for the treatment of chronic pain. [source]


PROMISCUITY DRIVES SEXUAL SELECTION IN A SOCIALLY MONOGAMOUS BIRD

Many socially monogamous species paradoxically show signs of strong sexual selection, suggesting cryptic sources of sexual competition among males. Darwin argued that sexual selection could operate in monogamous systems if breeding sex ratios are biased or if some males attract highly fecund females. Alternatively, sexual selection might result from promiscuous copulations outside the pair bond, although several recent studies have cast doubt on this possibility, in particular by showing that variance in apparent male reproductive success (number of social young) differs little from variance in actual male reproductive success (number of young sired). Our results from a long-term study of the socially monogamous splendid fairy-wren (Malurus splendens) demonstrate that such comparisons are misleading and do not adequately assess the effects of extra-pair paternity (EPP). By partitioning the opportunity for selection and calculating Bateman gradients, we show that EPP has a strong effect on male annual and lifetime fitness, whereas other proposed mechanisms of sexual selection do not. Thus, EPP drives sexual selection in this, and possibly other, socially monogamous species. [source]


Gene expression silencing with ,specific' small interfering RNA goes beyond specificity , a study of key parameters to take into account in the onset of small interfering RNA off-target effects

RNA-mediated gene silencing (RNA interference) is a powerful way to knock down gene expression and has revolutionized the fields of cellular and molecular biology. Indeed, the transfection of cultured cells with small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) is currently considered to be the best and easiest approach to loss-of-function experiments. However, several recent studies underscore the off-target and potential cytotoxic effects of siRNAs, which can lead to the silencing of unintended mRNAs. In this study, we used a low-density microarray to assess gene expression modifications in response to five different siRNAs in various cell types and transfection conditions. We found major differences in off-target signature according to: (a) siRNA sequence; (b) cell type; (c) duration of transfection; and (d) post-transfection time before analysis. These results contribute to a better understanding of important parameters that could impact on siRNA side effects in knockdown experiments. [source]

Although it is recognized that litter quality and decomposition rates decrease as retrogression proceeds, little is known about the extent to which this is driven among- vs. within-species variation across these sequences. 2We selected six long-term chronosequences that each included retrogressive stages, in New Zealand, Hawaii, Sweden, Alaska and Australia. Two involve significant species turnover across the sequence so that different species dominate at different stages, two involve low species turnover so that the same dominant species occur at all stages, and two involve some turnover of species but with certain species persisting throughout most of the sequence. 3For each chronosequence, we collected litter from each dominant plant species at each stage of that sequence. For each litter collection we measured concentrations of N and P, and performed laboratory decomposition bioassays to measure mass loss, N and P loss, and the response of mass loss to mixture with litters of coexisting species. 4We found that litter N and P concentrations often declined with increasing ecosystem age, both among- and within-species. However, the relative importance of among- and within-species effects varied across the six chronosequences. Rates of litter mass, N, and P loss during decomposition sometimes decreased with increasing ecosystem age, but most often at the among-species rather than the within-species level. 5Litter mixing effects often varied across chronosequence stages, but the magnitude and direction of these effects was inconsistent among sequences. Variation in litter mixing effects across chronosequence stages was driven mainly by among- rather than within-species variation. 6Although several recent studies have emphasized the role of within-species variation on ecosystem properties, our results point to among-species variation as a consistently important ecological driver, with within-species variation being important only for some variables and in some instances. As such they highlight that decomposition processes are most likely to be highly responsive to gradients of soil fertility (such as across chronosequences) when significant species turnover occurs across the gradient. Effect of hypothyroidism on the nitrergic relaxant responses of corpus cavernosal smooth muscle in rabbits

Background:, The incidence of hormonal dysfunction as a cause of impotence remains controversial. However, several recent studies have reported evidence of hormonal abnormalities in 25,35% of impotent men. Hypothyroidism has been reported to occur in 6% of impotent men. Methods:, In the present study, we examined nitrergic responses in hypothyroidism in rabbit corpus cavernosum and compared them with controls. Results:, Carbachol-induced relaxation responses and electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced frequency-dependent relaxations decreased significantly in hypothyroid rabbits. Papaverine and sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced relaxation responses did not change significantly in hypothyroid rabbits. The contraction responses of phenylephrine and EFS-induced frequency-dependent contractions were significantly decreased in the hypothyroid group. Conclusions:, We can speculate that the reduction of relaxant responses to EFS and carbachol in hypothyroid rabbits can depend on a decreased release of nitric oxide (NO) from nitrergic nerves and endothelium or a reduction of muscarinic receptor density. Also, decreases in contraction responses may depend on diminished adrenoceptor density. [source]


Ecological feedbacks and the evolution of resistance

Summary 1. ,The idea that parasites can affect host diversity is pervasive, and the possibility that parasites can increase host diversity is of particular interest. In this review, we focus on diversity in the resistance of hosts to their parasites, and on the different ways in which parasites can increase or decrease this resistance diversity. 2. ,Theoretically, parasites can exert many different types of selection on host populations, which each have consequences for host diversity. Specifically, theory predicts that parasites can exert negative frequency-dependent selection (NFDS) and disruptive selection on resistance, both of which increase host diversity, as well as directional selection and stabilizing selection on resistance, both of which decrease host diversity. 3. ,Despite these theoretical predictions, most biologists think of only NFDS or directional selection for increased resistance in response to parasitism. Here, we present empirical support for all of these types of selection occurring in natural populations. Interestingly, several recent studies demonstrate that there is spatiotemporal variation in the type of selection that occurs (and, therefore, in the effects of parasitism on host diversity). 4. ,A key question that remains, then, is: What determines the type of parasite-mediated selection that occurs? Theory demonstrates that the answer to this question lies, at least in part, with trade-offs associated with resistance. Specifically, the type of evolution that occurs depends critically on the strength and shape of these trade-offs. This, combined with empirical evidence for a strong effect of environment on the shape and strength of trade-offs, may explain the observed spatiotemporal variation in parasite-mediated selection. 5. ,We conclude that spatiotemporal variation in parasite-driven evolution is likely to be common, and that this variation may be driven by ecological factors. We suggest that the feedback between ecological and evolutionary dynamics in host,parasite interactions is likely to be a productive area of research. In particular, studies addressing the role of ecological factors (e.g. productivity and predation regimes) in driving the outcome of parasite-mediated selection on host populations are warranted. Such studies are necessary if we are to understand the mechanisms underlying the observed variation in the effects of parasites on host diversity. [source]


Molecular regulation of androgen action in prostate cancer,

Abstract Androgens are critical regulators of prostate differentiation and function, as well as prostate cancer growth and survival. Therefore, androgen ablation is the preferred systemic treatment for disseminated prostate cancer. Androgen action is exerted in target tissues via binding the androgen receptor (AR), a nuclear receptor transcription factor. Historically, the gene expression program mediated by the AR has been poorly understood. However, recent gene expression profiling and more traditional single-gene characterization studies have revealed many androgen-regulated genes that are important mediators of androgen action in both normal and malignant prostate tissue. This review will focus on the androgen-regulated gene expression program, and examine how recently identified androgen-regulated genes are likely to contribute to the development and progression of prostate cancer. We will also summarize several recent studies that have attempted to unravel how these genes are deregulated in androgen depletion independent prostate cancer. J. Cell. Establishing a perimeter position: speciation around the Indian Ocean Basin

Abstract Historical biological interactions among peripheral landmasses on the periphery of the Indian Ocean Basin (IOB) are generally poorly understood. While interactions based on early Gondwanan vicariance have been used to explain present day lineage distributions, several recent studies have instead inferred dispersal across the IOB. This inference is often advanced because lineages under study have species inhabiting IOB islands. Here we examine the roles of continental vicariance vs. trans-IOB dispersal in the distribution of an avian genus found around the perimeter of the IOB. A molecular phylogeny does reveal evidence of a relationship that would require the inference of trans-IOB dispersal between eastern Africa and Sri Lanka. However, molecular clock data, ancestral area analyses and paleoclimatic reconstructions suggest that vicariance related to tropical forest expansion and retraction is more likely to have facilitated African,Asian interchange, with an initial colonization of Africa from Asia quickly followed by a recolonization of Asia. Subsequent dispersal from Asia to Sri Lanka and islands east of the Sunda Shelf are inferred; these latter islands were colonized in a stepping-stone fashion that culminated in colonization of the Sunda Shelf, and a recolonization of mainland Asia. We propose that circum-IOB distributions, which post-date early Gondwanan breakup, are most likely the result of continent-based vicariant events, particularly those events related to large-scale habitat alterations, and not trans-IOB dispersals. Distribution of the genus Hypoplectrus (Teleostei: Serranidae) in the Greater Caribbean Region: support for a color-based speciation

Abstract The reef-associated fish genus Hypoplectrus (Serranidae), endemic to the western Atlantic Ocean, represents an ideal model to study speciation within a potentially highly dispersive (marine) ecosystem, because it consists of a complex of at least 10 morphs differentiated primarily by coloration. Although several recent studies on genetics, diet, and fertilization reveal little to no difference between the Hypoplectrus color morphs, there is still not a full understanding of what keeps these morphs distinct or drives their variation. Ecological information is needed alongside the genetic information to better understand this variation. Based on presence/absence records from scientific literature and direct observations in coral reefs, this work examined the distribution of the genus Hypoplectrus in the Greater Caribbean region. Some color morphs occurred simultaneously at given locations, but others showed geographic restrictions. Using cluster and nMDS analyses, we found three major groupings according to distribution: (i) widespread (Hypoplectrus puella, Hypoplectrus unicolor, and Hypoplectrus nigricans), (ii) less widespread (Hypoplectrus indigo, Hypoplectrus gummigutta, Hypoplectrus chlorurus, Hypoplectrus aberrans, and Hypoplectrus guttavarius), and (iii) geographically confined or segregated (Hypoplectrus gemma, Hypoplectrus providencianus). Geographic sections selected for the Greater Caribbean (eastern, western and northern) were dominated by at least three widely distributed Hypoplectrus morphs. New geographic records of some color morphs were documented and compared to previous established distribution ranges in the Greater Caribbean. [source]


Contexts and behavioral correlates of trill vocalizations in wild white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus)

Abstract Primate vocalizations that appear to occur independently of specific contexts typically are considered to be contact calls. However, results from several recent studies indicate that these calls function to facilitate social interactions. White-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) emit a high-frequency vocalization, termed a "trill," in social interactions and during travel. In this study, immatures emitted most trills, but adult females also trilled; by contrast, adult males rarely trilled. Infants emitted the majority of trills, and they trilled at significantly higher rates than adult females. Infants trilled most when approaching other individuals. Furthermore, infants emitted proportionately more trills than other age classes when approaching other individuals. I therefore focused on the detailed context and immediate behavioral correlates of trilling by infants. Infants that trilled when approaching others tended to interact affiliatively with them subsequently (i.e., climbing on, touching, receiving grooming, and performing food inspection) more than infants that did not trill when approaching. Proteomics: Recent Applications and New Technologies

Proteomic analyses have recently been conducted on tissues, biofluids, subcellular components and enzymatic pathways as well as various disease and toxicological states, in both animal models and man. In addition, several recent studies have attempted to integrate proteomics data with genomics and/or metabonomics data in a systems biology approach. The translation of proteomic technology and bioinformatics tools to clinical samples, such as in the areas of disease and toxicity biomarkers, represents one of the major opportunities and challenges facing this field. An ongoing challenge in proteomics continues to be the analysis of the serum proteome due to the vast number and complexity of proteins estimated to be present in this biofluid. Aside from the removal of the most abundant proteins, a number of interesting approaches have recently been suggested that may help reduce the overall complexity of serum analysis. In keeping with the increasing interest in applications of proteomics, the tools available for proteomic analyses continue to improve and expand. For example, enhanced tools (such as software and labeling procedures) continue to be developed for the analysis of 2D gels and protein quantification. In addition, activity-based probes are now being used to tag, enrich and isolate distinct sets of proteins based on enzymatic activity. One of the most active areas of development involves microarrays. Antibody-based microarrays have recently been released as commercial products while numerous additional capture agents (e.g. aptamers) and many additional types of microarrays are being explored. Speciation and the neutral theory of biodiversity

Modes of speciation affect patterns of biodiversity in neutral communities.
Abstract The neutral theory of biodiversity purports that patterns in the distribution and abundance of species do not depend on adaptive differences between species (i.e. niche differentiation) but solely on random fluctuations in population size ("ecological drift"), along with dispersal and speciation. In this framework, the ultimate driver of biodiversity is speciation. However, the original neutral theory made strongly simplifying assumptions about the mechanisms of speciation, which has led to some clearly unrealistic predictions. In response, several recent studies have combined neutral community models with more elaborate speciation models. These efforts have alleviated some of the problems of the earlier approaches, while confirming the general ability of neutral theory to predict empirical patterns of biodiversity. However, the models also show that the mode of speciation can have a strong impact on relative species abundances. Future work should compare these results to diversity patterns arising from non-neutral modes of speciation, such as adaptive radiations. [source]


Haeckel's ABC of evolution and development

ABSTRACT One of the central, unresolved controversies in biology concerns the distribution of primitive versus advanced characters at different stages of vertebrate development. This controversy has major implications for evolutionary developmental biology and phylogenetics. Ernst Haeckel addressed the issue with his Biogenetic Law, and his embryo drawings functioned as supporting data. We re-examine Haeckel's work and its significance for modern efforts to develop a rigorous comparative framework for developmental studies. Haeckel's comparative embryology was evolutionary but non-quantitative. It was based on developmental sequences, and treated heterochrony as a sequence change. It is not always clear whether he believed in recapitulation of single characters or entire stages. The Biogenetic Law is supported by several recent studies - if applied to single characters only. Haeckel's important but overlooked alphabetical analogy of evolution and development is an advance on von Baer. Haeckel recognized the evolutionary diversity in early embryonic stages, in line with modern thinking. He did not necessarily advocate the strict form of recapitulation and terminal addition commonly attributed to him. Haeckel's much-criticized embryo drawings are important as phylogenetic hypotheses, teaching aids, and evidence for evolution. While some criticisms of the drawings are legitimate, others are more tendentious. In opposition to Haeckel and his embryo drawings, Wilhelm His made major advances towards developing a quantitative comparative embryology based on morphometrics. Unfortunately His's work in this area is largely forgotten. Despite his obvious flaws, Haeckel can be seen as the father of a sequence-based phylogenetic embryology. [source]


Multiscale modeling of nucleic acids: Insights into DNA flexibility

Abstract The elastic rod theory is used together with all-atom normal mode analysis in implicit solvent to characterize the mechanical flexibility of duplex DNA. The bending, twisting, stretching rigidities extracted from all-atom simulations (on linear duplexes from 60 to 150 base pairs in length and from 94-bp minicircles) are in reasonable agreement with experimental results. We focus on salt concentration and sequence effects on the overall flexibility. Bending persistence lengths are about 20% higher than most experimental estimates, but the transition from low-salt to high-salt behavior is reproduced well, as is the dependence of the stretching modulus on salt (which is opposite to that of bending). CTG and CGG trinucleotide repeats, responsible for several degenerative disorders, are found to be more flexible than random DNA, in agreement with several recent studies, whereas poly(dA).poly(dT) is the stiffest sequence we have encountered. The results suggest that current all-atom potentials, which were parameterized on small molecules and short oligonucleotides, also provide a useful description of duplex DNA at much longer length scales. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
