Spatial correspondence between areas of concentration of Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) and frontal systems in the southwestern Atlantic

Abstract It has been hypothesized that the geographical location of scallop beds in extensive shelf regions mirrors hydrographic structures (e.g. frontal systems) that favor the retention/concentration of pelagic larvae. Large, discontinuous concentrations of the Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) are known to have occurred recurrently (for more than 30 yr) at certain geographical locations over the extensive Patagonian shelf. These stocks, exploited since 1996, currently support one of the most important scallop fisheries in the world. Here, we investigate whether those aggregations are spatially coincidental with major frontal systems. Several pieces of information were used: historical survey data documenting the geographic distribution of the Patagonian scallop beds, catch and effort data from the commercial fleet, oceanographic data on frontal systems, and remote sensing imagery. We found that large-scale aggregations do match the location of three major and very different frontal systems in the southwestern Atlantic: the Shelf-Break Frontal System, the Northern Patagonia Frontal System, and the Southern Patagonia Frontal System. We describe the three frontal systems and their associated scallops fishing grounds and discuss which processes can contribute to sustaining the productivity of the scallop grounds in each case. Triassic metasedimentary successions across the boundary between the southern Apennines and the Calabrian Arc (northern Calabria, Italy)

Abstract The boundary area between the Apenninic fold-and-thrust belt and the crystalline Calabrian Arc, located around Sangineto in northern Calabria, has been investigated. New geological mapping in the Sant'Agata area has been performed on the Triassic successions traditionally attributed to the metasedimentary San Donato Unit. This, coupled with a reappraisal of the stratigraphy and tectonics of coeval successions present more to the south in the Cetraro Unit, results in a new reconstruction of the Triassic evolution of all the metasedimentary successions found in the region. Four informal stratigraphic units have been distinguished in the S. Agata area. The lowest one (Unit A) consists of well-bedded metalimestones and bioturbated marly limestones that correlate with Ladinian,Carnian carbonates in nearby areas. A second unit (Unit B), never recognized before, contains a complex alternation of dolomites, phyllites and some meta-arenites containing several beds of Cavernoso facies, attributed to the Carnian. They grade upward to platform and platform-margin dolomites of Norian,Rhaetian age (Unit C) that in turn are replaced upward and laterally by a fourth unit (Unit D) consisting of well-bedded, dark dolomites and metalimestones with marly interlayers locally found as resedimented large blocks in slope conglomerates. Unit D correlates with Rhaetian,Liassic beds in nearby areas. Several pieces of evidence of post-metamorphic contractional tectonics, with 140°N and 30°N trends, are found together with evidence of SW-directed extension. The siliciclastic Carnian beds of Unit B are correlated with the phyllites of Cetraro, formerly believed to be Middle Triassic; moreover, it is suggested that in the Cetraro area Unit C is almost totally replaced by Unit D. This demonstrates that the former distinction between the two tectonic units in the whole area has to be discarded. We have made a general palaeoenvironmental reconstruction which progresses laterally, during Ladinian,Carnian times, from (i) a coastal, mixed siliciclastic,carbonate,evaporitic area at Cetraro to (ii) a transitional carbonate shelf where siliciclastic input was only episodic, and finally to (iii) a bioconstructed margin which was later replaced by a steepened margin created by tectonic instability. Starting from the Norian, subsidence shifted toward the former coastal area where an intraplatform, restricted basin developed. The proposed stratigraphy corresponds closely to the Alpujarride units of the Betic Cordillera, Spain. Moreover, it is shown that strong affinities also exist, in terms of the structural framework, with the metamorphic units of Tuscany and Liguria. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Several pieces of cross-staffs have been found on the wreck of the Stirling Castle on the Goodwin Sands. One has been assembled from parts of staffs found when the wreck was first investigated, and is currently in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Another part of a staff was found in 2001. It is from a cross-staff rather than a back-staff and, except for broken ends, is in good condition. The problems encountered in using such instruments are linked with the loss of Sir Cloudesley Shovell's fleet in 1707. © 2009 The Author [source]


Mass spectrometric characterization of covalent modification of human serum albumin by 4-hydroxy- trans -2-nonenal

Abstract Several pieces of evidence indicate that albumin modified by HNE is a promising biomarker of systemic oxidative stress and that HNE-modified albumin may contribute to the immune reactions triggered by lipid peroxidation-derived antigens. In this study, we found by HPLC analysis that HNE is rapidly quenched by human serum albumin (HSA) because of the covalent adduction to the different accessible nucleophilic residues of the protein, as demonstrated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) direct infusion experiments (one to nine HNE adducts, depending on the molar ratio used, from 1 : 0.25 to 1 : 5 HSA : HNE). An LC-ESI-MS/MS approach was then applied to enzymatically digested HNE-modified albumin, which permitted the identification of 11 different HNE adducts, 8 Michael adducts (MA) and 3 Schiff bases (SB), involving nine nucleophilic sites, namely: His67 (MA), His146 (MA), His242 (MA), His288 (MA), His510 (MA), Lys 195 (SB), Lys 199 (MA, SB), Lys525 (MA, SB) and Cys34 (MA). The most reactive HNE-adduction site was found to be Cys34 (MA) followed by Lys199, which primarily reacts through the formation of a Schiff base, and His146, giving the corresponding HNE Michael adduct. These albumin modifications are suitable tags of HNE-adducted albumin and could be useful biomarkers of oxidative and carbonylation damage in humans. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Factors affecting wafer sheet quality

Summary Wafers are low-moisture-baked foods. They are formed from a batter and baked between hot plates. The quality of wafer sheets is mainly controlled by flour property, water level and temperature, mixing action, baking time and temperature. The quality is judged by attributes of the batter such as the density, viscosity, holding time and temperature, and by properties of the wafer such as weight, surface colour, fragility and moisture content. In this study, the batter-specific gravity of 1.11,1.19 was recorded. Water and gluten content did not affect density. Water level, but not gluten content, however affected viscosity. Batter holding time drastically changed viscosity. The temperature of plates did significantly affect bake time. For wafer sheets with a high quality, 155,165% water level, 170 °C baking temperature and 2 min of bake time were found to be adequate. Wafer sheets baked at the lower temperatures stuck to the plates and broke up to several pieces. At a lower water level (<145%) and baking temperature of 150 °C, tough and flinty sheets were obtained, whereas at a water level higher than 160% and a higher temperature (190 °C), fragile sheets were obtained. A UNIQUE LIFE CYCLE AND PERENNATION IN A COLORLESS CHRYSOPHYTE SPUMELLA SP.,

Life cycle and perennation of a colorless chrysophyte, Spumella sp., isolated from an ephemeral ditch were investigated. From a single resting cyst (statospore), only one nonmotile cell germinated. Shortly after germination, the cell generated flagella, started to swim, and formed a gelatinous sphere. The cell itself retained the ability to swim within the sphere. Cells fed on bacteria inhabiting the sphere and grew by longitudinal binary cell division very rapidly. The gelatinous sphere gradually enlarged as the number of cells increased. When it reached maximum size (,500 ,m in diameter), the gelatinous substance of the sphere weakened, and the sphere gradually broke into several pieces, forming cleavages between them. Cells swam away through the cleavages. Five to ,40 swimming cells soon gathered and formed a swarm. In the swarm, some cells cannibalized other sibling cells and enlarged, resulting in giant cells that were two to three times larger in diameter than ordinary cells. The giant cells soon started statospore formation. Statospore formation was independent of any changes of environmental factors, such as increase or decrease in temperature or changes in nutrient or light levels, which are known to induce resting-cyst formation in other groups of algae and protists. Statospore formation started when cells divided 15 to 16 times after germination. This is congruent with the idea that statospore formation in planktonic chrysophytes directly depends on cell density. An extraordinarily high growth rate and cannibalism involved in the initiation of statospore formation are interpreted as adaptations to achieve the perennation in ephemeral aquatic environments. Brahms and the Principle of Destabilised Beginnings

ABSTRACT Despite the considerable research on moment-to-moment motivic development in Brahms's instrumental music, surprisingly few studies emphasise global thematic processes which involve transformations of initially destabilised thematic material. After placing Brahms's destabilised beginnings in the context of earlier nineteenth-century works, the article explores several pieces with destabilised beginnings in order to demonstrate Brahms's range of techniques for tonal and rhythmic-metric destabilisation, strategies used to maintain destabilisation at preliminary thematic returns and the relationships between destabilised beginnings and their eventual stabilised form. Tonal destabilisation subsumes several related and somewhat overlapping techniques, and the article pursues six which have particular relevance in Brahms's music: (1) stylistically marked chromaticism, (2) unusual dissonance treatment, (3) denial of harmonic or melodic cadence, (4) minimally stable diatonic harmonisation, (5) disjuncture between harmonic function and sonority type and (6) ambiguous establishment of key. The briefer consideration of rhythmic-metric destabilisation studies dissonance (1) at the level of metre and (2) at some level of hypermetre. The concluding section addresses stylistic and genre-specific constraints on destabilised beginnings as well as the implications of destabilised beginnings for the analysis of musical form, especially the distinction between rondo and modified sonata designs.
