Topographic controls on the chemistry of subsurface stormflow

Abstract Models are needed that describe how topography and other watershed characteristics affect the chemical composition of runoff waters, yet little spatially distributed data exist to develop such models. A topographically driven flushing mechanism for nitrate (NO3,) and dissolved organic carbon has been described in recent literature; however, this mechanism has not yet been thoroughly tested. A 24 ha catchment in the Catskill Mountains of New York was clearcut in the winter of 1996,97, resulting in elevated NO3, concentrations in soil water, groundwater and streamflow. We sampled shallow subsurface stormflow (SSSF) and streamflow six times during the spring and summer of 1998, 1 year after the harvest. We used a spatially distributed network of piezometers to investigate the relationship between topography and SSSF chemistry. Several indices of topography were computed, including the commonly employed topographic index of Beven and Kirkby (1979; Hydrological Sciences Bulletin24: 43,69). Topographic index was positively correlated with NO3, concentrations in SSSF. The strength of the NO3,,topography relationship was best explained by antecedent soil temperature and antecedent precipitation conditions. Morphometric and spatial analysis of thaw lakes and drained thaw lake basins in the western Arctic Coastal Plain, Alaska

Abstract Landsat-7 ETM,+ scenes were acquired for the western Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska extending from 152° to 162° W longitude. A segmentation algorithm was used to classify lakes and drained thaw lake basins (DTLBs) exceeding 1,ha in size. A total of 13,214 lakes and 6539 DTLBs were identified. Several indices were obtained from the image processing software and used for a comparative analysis of lakes and basins including object size, goodness of elliptic fit, shape complexity, shape asymmetry, and orientation of the major axis. Nonparametric statistical analyses indicate that lakes and basins share similar orientation only. Three subregions of the western Arctic Coastal Plain were identified based on landscape age, as demarcated by ancient shorelines. The surfaces become progressively older inland and include the Younger Outer Coastal Plain, the Outer Coastal Plain, and the oldest Inner Coastal Plain. Lakes and basins in all subregions have statistically similar orientation, indicating that summer wind direction has not changed appreciably over the past several thousand years. Basin orientation is less clustered than lake orientation. Lakes are highly elliptical, while basins have more complex shapes. Lake coverage (%) is fairly constant across the three subregions, while DTLB coverage decreases on older surfaces. Lake and basin size decreases on progressively older surfaces, but the number of features per unit area increases. It is uncertain if surface age is responsible for differences in regional metrics as an analysis of the Inner Coastal Plain demonstrates significant internal variation. Salmon lice infection of wild sea trout and Arctic char in marine and freshwaters: the effects of salmon farms

Abstract The abundance of salmon lice and the physiological effects of infection were examined in two stocks of sympatric sea trout and anadromous Arctic char in northern Norway. One stock feed in a coastal area with extensive salmon farming (exposed locality), while the other feed in a region with little farming activity (unexposed locality). The results showed that the lice infection was significantly higher at the exposed locality, at which the mean intensity of infection peaked in June and July at over 100 and 200 lice larvae per fish respectively. At the exposed locality we also observed a premature return to freshwater of the most heavily infected fish. Such behaviour has previously been interpreted as a response by the fish to reduce the stress caused by the infection and/or to enhance survival. Blood samples taken from sea trout at sea at the exposed locality showed a positive correlation between intensity of parasite infection and an increase in the plasma cortisol, chloride and blood glucose concentrations, while the correlations from sea trout in freshwater were more casual. Several indices pointed towards an excessive mortality of the heaviest infected fish, and 47% of the fish caught in freshwater and 32% of those captured at sea carried lice at intensities above the level that has been shown to induce mortality in laboratory experiments. Furthermore, almost half of all fish from the exposed locality had lice intensities that would probably cause osmoregulatory imbalance. High salmon lice infections may therefore have profound negative effects upon wild populations of sea trout. At the unexposed location, the infection intensities were low, and few fish carried more than 10 lice. These are probably within the normal range of natural infection and such intensities are not expected to affect the stock negatively. [source]


A review of fluorosis in the European Union: prevalence, risk factors and aesthetic issues

Abstract,-, Fluoride has played a key role in caries prevention for the past 50 years but excessive ingestion of fluoride during tooth development may lead to dental fluorosis. Throughout Europe many vehicles have been, and are currently, employed for optimal fluoride delivery including drinking water, toothpaste, fluoride supplements, salt and milk. Several indices, both descriptive and aetiological, have been developed and used for measuring fluorosis. This factor, combined with the lack of use of a standardized method for measurement of fluorosis, has made comparison between studies difficult and assessment of trends in fluorosis prevalence unreliable. Overall the evidence would appear to indicate, however, that diffuse enamel opacities are more prevalent in fluoridated than in nonfluoridated communities and that their prevalence at the very mild level may be increasing. In addition to fluoridated drinking water, risk factors for fluorosis include inadvertent ingestion of fluoride toothpaste and the inappropriate use of fluoride supplements. The risk is of aesthetic concern primarily during the period of enamel development of the permanent central incisors, although this largely appears to be a cosmetic rather than a public-health issue. It is concluded that there is a need to co-ordinate studies measuring fluorosis throughout Europe and that development of a standardized photographic method would be useful. Furthermore, the aesthetic importance of fluorosis needs to be determined in more detail in each country in the light of each country's respective risk factors and dental health policies. [source]


Psychoeducational intervention for caregivers of Indian patients with schizophrenia: a randomised-controlled trial

Objective:, There are hardly any randomised-controlled trials of structured family interventions for schizophrenia from India. This study attempted to evaluate the impact of a structured psychoeducational intervention for schizophrenia, compared with standard out-patient treatment, on various patient- and caregiver-related parameters. Method:, Seventy-six patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia and their caregivers were randomly allocated to receive either a structured psychoeducational intervention (n = 38) consisting of monthly sessions for 9 months or ,routine' out-patient care (n = 38) for the same duration. Psychopathology was assessed on monthly basis. Disability levels, caregiver-burden, caregiver-coping, caregiver-support and caregiver-satisfaction were evaluated at baseline and upon completion. Results:, Structured psychoeducational intervention was significantly better than routine out-patient care on several indices including psychopathology, disability, caregiver-support and caregiver-satisfaction. The psychoeducational intervention package used was simple, feasible and not costly. Conclusion:, Structured psychoeducational intervention is a viable option for treatment of schizophrenia even in developing countries like India. [source]


Impact of the heroin ,drought' on patterns of drug use and drug-related harms

Abstract Since late 2000, anecdotal reports from drug users and health professionals have suggested that there was a reduction in the supply of heroin in Adelaide in the first half of 2001, referred to as a heroin ,drought'. The aim of this paper was to critically review evidence for this, using data obtained from 100 injecting drug users surveyed for the 2001 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS). This project is carried out annually in all Australian jurisdictions, and collects up-to-date information on the markets for heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and cannabis. This paper also investigates the possible implications of this ,drought' on patterns of drug use and drug-related harms. The 2001 IDRS found consistent reports by users of an increase in the price of heroin, together with decreases in purity and availability. These factors resulted in a decrease in the frequency of self-reported heroin use among those surveyed in 2001, and a concomitant increase in the use of other drugs, in particular methamphetamine and morphine. The heroin ,drought' appears to have had a substantial impact on several indices of drug-related harm. There was a marked decrease in the number of opioid-related fatalities, and hospital data also showed reductions in heroin-related presentations. Treatment service data showed an increase in the number of admissions related to amphetamines. There is a need for health promotion and education on the adverse effects of methamphetamine use, and the development of improved treatment protocols for methamphetamine abuse and dependence. Study of indices for drought characterization in KBK districts in Orissa (India)

Abstract Drought is a temporary, random and regional climatic phenomenon, originating due to lack of precipitation leading to water deficit and causing economic loss. Success in drought alleviation depends on how well droughts are defined and their severity quantified. A quantitative definition identifies the beginning, end, spatial extent and the severity of drought. Among the available indices, no single index is capable of fully describing all the physical characteristics of drought. Therefore, in most cases it is useful and necessary to consider several indices, examine their sensitivity and accuracy, and investigate for correlation among them. In this study, the geographical information system-based Spatial and Time Series Information Modeling (SPATSIM) and Daily Water Resources Assessment Modeling (DWRAM) software were used for drought analysis on monthly and daily bases respectively and its spatial distribution in both dry and wet years. SPATSIM utilizes standardized precipitation index (SPI), effective drought index (EDI), deciles index and departure from long-term mean and median; and DWRAM employs only EDI. The analysis of data from the Kalahandi and Nuapada districts of Orissa (India) revealed that (a) droughts in this region occurred with a frequency of once in every 3 to 4 years, (b) droughts occurred in the year when the ratio of annual rainfall to potential evapotranspiration (Pae/PET) was less than 0·6, (c) EDI better represented the droughts in the area than any other index; (d) all SPI, EDI and annual deviation from the mean showed a similar trend of drought severity. The comparison of all indices and results of analysis led to several useful and pragmatic inferences in understanding the drought attributes of the study area. Predicting summer rainfall in the Yangtze River basin with neural networks

Abstract Summer rainfall in the Yangtze River basin is predicted using neural network techniques. Input variables (predictors) for the neural network are the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), the East Atlantic/Western Russia (EA/WR) pattern, the Scandinavia (SCA) pattern, the Polar/Eurasia (POL) pattern and several indices calculated from sea surface temperatures (SST), sea level pressures (SLP) and snow data from December to April for the period from 1993 to 2002. The output variable of the neural network is rainfall from May to September for the period from 1994 to 2002, which was previously classified into six different regions by means of a principal component analysis (PCA). Rainfall is predicted from May to September 2002. The winter SST and SLP indices are identified to be the most important predictors of summer rainfall in the Yangtze River basin. The Tibetan Plateau snow depth, the SOI and the other teleconnection indices seem to be of minor importance for an accurate prediction. This may be the result of the length of the available time series, which does not allow a deeper analysis of the impact of multi-annual oscillations. The neural network algorithms proved to be capable of explaining most of the rainfall variability in the Yangtze River basin. Parents of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities: Quality of Life and Experiences of Caring

This study examined a UK sample of parents caring for their adult offspring with intellectual disabilities, and the factors contributing to their quality of life and experiences of caregiving. Structured interviews were conducted with 62 parents of adults with intellectual disabilities. On several indices of quality of life, parents did not seem to be functioning as well as caregiving parents in the US, or as well as adults in the general US population. The offspring's level of challenging behaviour and physical dependency and the parent's satisfaction with informal support were associated with parental quality of life. The salience that parents placed on their post-parental life style was also associated with quality of life, with ,captive' parents faring more poorly than ,captivated' parents. [source]

Summary Among the notable trends seen in this year's highlights in mammalian aging research is an awakening of interest in the assessment of age-related measures of mouse health in addition to the traditional focus on longevity. One finding of note is that overexpression of telomerase extended life and improved several indices of health in mice that had previously been genetically rendered cancer resistant. In another study, resveratrol supplementation led to amelioration of several degenerative conditions without affecting mouse lifespan. A primate dietary restriction (DR) study found that restriction led to major improvements in glucoregulatory status along with provocative but less striking effects on survival. Visceral fat removal in rats improved their survival, although not as dramatically as DR. An unexpected result showing the power of genetic background effects was that DR shortened the lifespan of long-lived mice bearing Prop1df, whereas a previous report in a different background had found DR to extend the lifespan of Prop1df mice. Treatment with the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, rapamycin, enhanced the survival of even elderly mice and improved their vaccine response. Genetic inhibition of a TOR target made female, but not male, mice live longer. This year saw the mTOR network firmly established as a major modulator of mammalian lifespan. [source]


Association of Activities of Daily Living and Indices of Mental Status with Subsequent 20-year All-Cause Mortality in an Elderly Japanese Population

Purpose: To examine the associations of activities of daily living (ADL) and indices of mental status with the risk of subsequent mortality in an elderly Japanese population. Design: Prospective cohort study. Participants: 725 men and 984 women aged 65 years or older at time of baseline examination in 1976,1977. Measurements: Demographic data, levels of disability in ADL, and indices of mental status including self-rated health (SRH), dementia, and depression. Main outcome measures: The subsequent 20-year all-cause mortality. Results: (1) Disability in ADL and several indices of mental status (i.e. bad SRH, high dementia score, decreased pleasure, low morale, and prone to tears) were significantly associated with an increased risk of subsequent 20-year all-cause mortality. (2) The risk of all-cause mortality among people who had no disability in ADL with either of bad SRH, decreased pleasure, high dementia score, or low morale was similar to that among people who had some disability in ADL with either good SRH, increased pleasure, low dementia score, or high morale, respectively. Conclusion: There were strong associations among the levels of disability in ADL and several indices of mental status with subsequent mortality. It was concluded that good mental status may improve longevity even when elderly people have some disability in ADL. [source]


Evaluating Normal Approximation Confidence Intervals for Measures of 2 × 2 Association with Applications to Twin Data

Abstract Twin data are of interest to genetic epidemiologists for exploring the underlying genetic basis of disease development. When the outcome is binary, several indices of 2 × 2 association can be used to measure the degree of within twin similarity. All such measures share a common feature, in that they can be expressed as a monotonic increasing function of the within twin correlation. The sampling distributions of their estimates are influenced by the sample size, the correlation and the marginal distribution of the binary response. In this paper we use Monte-Carlo simulations to estimate the empirical coverage probabilities and evaluate the adequacy of the classical normal confidence intervals on the population values of these measures.
