Selected AbstractsFrequency domain equalisation in CDMA detectionEUROPEAN TRANSACTIONS ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS, Issue 2 2008Ihan Martoyo The present paper introduces frequency domain equalisation (FDE) as an efficient means for single-user detection (SUD) in universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) handhelds. Such an SUD is, at least partially, able to remove multiple access interference (MAI) like a multi-user detector (MUD), however with several important advantages the operation principle of an FDE-SUD is simple and easy to understand, the FDE-SUD shows low numerical complexity and therefore, it is not power hungry like an MUD. The problem of applying FDE without zero-padding or cyclic-prefix insertion is solved by using the overlap-cut method. In this paper we also prove that the performance of the FDE-SUD is practically identical to that of linear MUD for a fully loaded UMTS cell. Furthermore, armed with the idea of FDE for code division multiple access (CDMA), we can construct a common receiver structure for CDMA, time division multiple access (TDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) systems. This is an extremely useful idea in enabling a software-defined radio (SDR) which can operate seamlessly in several environments such as UMTS, the IEEE 802.11a and WiMaX. [source] Acrylic embedding of Stardust particles encased in aerogelMETEORITICS & PLANETARY SCIENCE, Issue 11 2006G. Matrajt In this report we describe a new embedding technique that uses acrylic resin instead of epoxy. This method offers several important advantages for sectioning small extraterrestrial samples. One is that the acrylic resin is soluble and can be removed after ultramicrotomy to leave a sample that is free of the mounting media. This is important for studying carbon and insoluble organic components. A second major advantage of acrylic is that, when combined with pre-embedding compression, it provides a very effective method of mounting samples collected in silica aerogel. Acrylic embedding is currently being used to mount comet particles collected by NASA's Stardust mission. Combined with a flattening process, the acrylic embedding and sectioning preserves all pieces of collected samples in their collection matrix. In addition to Stardust, acrylic may be applied to other samples collected in aerogel such as those from the Russian Mir space station (Hörz et al. 2000) and future missions such as Sample Collection for Investigation of Mars (SCIM) (Leshin 2003), a proposed mission to collect atmospheric dust particles from Mars. Fernández-Soto ABSTRACT We investigate the intrinsic opacity of high-redshift galaxies to outgoing ionizing photons using high-quality photometry of a sample of 27 spectroscopically identified galaxies of redshift 1.9 < z < 3.5 in the Hubble Deep Field. Our measurement is based on maximum-likelihood fitting of model galaxy spectral energy distributions , including the effects of intrinsic Lyman-limit absorption and random realizations of intervening Lyman-series and Lyman-limit absorption , to photometry of galaxies from space- and ground-based broad-band images. Our method provides several important advantages over the methods used by previous groups, including most importantly that two-dimensional sky subtraction of faint-galaxy images is more robust than one-dimensional sky subtraction of faint-galaxy spectra. We find at the 3,statistical confidence level that on average no more than 4 per cent of the ionizing photons escape galaxies of redshift 1.9 < z < 3.5. This result is consistent with observations of low- and moderate-redshift galaxies but is in direct contradiction to a recent result based on medium-resolution spectroscopy of high-redshift (z, 3) galaxies. Dividing our sample into subsamples according to luminosity, intrinsic ultraviolet colour and redshift, we find no evidence for selection effects that could explain such a discrepancy. Even when all systematic effects are included, the data could not realistically accommodate any escape fraction value larger than ,15 per cent. [source] Assessing local residence time distributions in screw extruders through a new in-line measurement instrumentPOLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, Issue 4 2006Xian-Ming Zhang This work aimed at developing a new instrument to measure in real time the residence time distribution (RTD) in screw extruders. The instrument followed the same principle as the one reported in the literature but possessed several important advantages. For example, the detection system had two probes that allowed to simultaneously measure RTDs at any two different locations of an extruder, thus providing the possibility of calculating the local RTD between them by a deconvolution method based on a statistical theory for the RTD. Its performance was evaluated on a corotating twin-screw extruder using anthracene as tracer and polystyrene as flowing material. The effects of various process parameters such as feed rate and screw speed on the RTDs were investigated. The emphasis was placed, however, on the effect of the staggering angle of kneading discs on local RTDs both in the kneading zone itself and its neighboring upstream and downstream screw zones. [source] A Novel Model for Post-Transplant Obliterative Airway Disease Reveals Angiogenesis from the Pulmonary CirculationAMERICAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 2 2005Andre E. Dutly We present a novel animal model for post-transplant obliterative airway disease in which the donor trachea is implanted into the recipient's lung parenchyma. Although this procedure is technically more challenging than the heterotopic model of implantation into a subcutaneous pouch, it has several important advantages some of which are the appropriate local environment and the possibility of local immunosuppressive therapy after transtracheal gene, cell or drug delivery. This model has revealed new insights into angiogenic potential of the pulmonary circulation. [source] |
