Spinning test particles in a Kerr field , II

MONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 4 2007
    K. Kyrian
ABSTRACT The motion of small spinning free test bodies is usually treated within the ,pole, dipole' approximation, which , in general relativity , leads to Mathisson,Papapetrou (MP) equations. These have to be supplemented by three side constraints in order to provide a unique solution. Several different ,spin conditions' have been proposed and used in the literature, each leading to different worldlines. In a previous paper, we integrated the MP equations with the p,S,,= 0 condition numerically in Kerr space, time and illustrated the effect of the spin, curvature interaction by comparing the trajectories obtained for various spin magnitudes. Here we also consider other spin conditions and clarify their interrelations analytically as well as numerically on particular trajectories. The notion of a ,minimal worldtube' is introduced in order to judge the individual supplementary conditions and to expose the limitations of the pole, dipole approximation. [source]

Development and Testing of Energetic Materials: The Concept of High Densities Based on the Trinitroethyl Functionality

ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 3 2009
    Michael Göbel
Abstract The development of new energetic materials is an emerging area of materials chemistry facilitated by a worldwide need to replace materials used at present, due to environmental considerations and safety requirements, while at the same time securing high performance. The development of such materials is complex, owing to the fact that several different and apparently mutually exclusive material properties have to be met in order for a new material to become widely accepted. In turn, understanding the basic principles of structure property relationships is highly desirable, as such an understanding would allow for a more rational design process to yield the desired properties. This article covers the trinitroethyl functionality and its potential for the design of next generation energetic materials, and describes relevant aspects of energetic materials chemistry including theoretical calculations capable of reliably predicting material properties. The synthesis, characterization, energetic properties, and structure property relationships of several new promising compounds displaying excellent material properties are reported with respect to different kinds of applications and compared to standard explosives currently used. Based on a review of trinitroethyl-containing compounds available in the literature, as well as this new contribution, it is observed that high density can generally be obtained in a more targeted manner in energetic materials taking advantage of noncovalent bonding interactions, a prerequisite for the design of next generation energetic materials. New and unexpected cosmetic properties of perfumes.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COSMETIC SCIENCE, Issue 5 2000
Effects upon free radicals, absolutes, enzymes induced by essential oils, fragrant compounds
Synopsis The biological properties of several different perfume components have been investigated. It has been demonstrated, through appropriate test methods, that essential oils, absolutes and even compounds show significant (anti/pro)-radical, (anti/pro)-elastasic and (anti/pro)-tyrosinasic activities. These unexpected properties open up new opportunities for the formulation of cosmetic products and could contribute to the understanding of activities traditionally attributed to essential oils by Aromatherapy. Advancing Patient Safety through Process Improvements

JOURNAL FOR HEALTHCARE QUALITY, Issue 5 2009
    Linda Elgart
Abstract: The department of Women's and Children's Services at the Hospital of Saint Raphael (HSR) in New Haven, CT, has initiated several different and successful approaches to reducing patient risk within the department. The department purchased a computerized fetal monitoring and documentation program that has improved the ability to provide high-level antepartal care for mothers and fetuses with automatic patient data management and continuous fetal heart rate surveillance. A Risk Reduction Grant offered through the hospital malpractice insurance program provided the financial assistance for all medical providers to become certified in electronic fetal monitoring. The certification is now a required educational standard for nurses, certified nurse midwives, and for physicians who work in the labor and delivery unit. Infant and pediatric security is incorporated into policy and practice measures that include hospital-wide drills for the prevention of infant abduction. The Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Quality Improvement Committee supports systematic reviews of identified clinical risks and works to find viable solutions to these problems. The hospital has supported specialized obstetrical care through the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit (MFMU), Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Inpatient Pediatric Unit, and the labor and delivery unit. In addition, HSR has initiated an enhanced medical informed consent that is available online for providers and a patient education tool that includes a computer room at the hospital for patient use.
