Selected AbstractsRelationships between personality traits, seminal parameters and hormones in male infertilityANDROLOGIA, Issue 5 2002R. Conrad Summary. In this study we investigated the relationship between personality attitudes, psychopathological symptoms and biological parameters in male infertility. Eighty-four infertile men underwent a psychological and medical examination at our clinic. The psychological tests comprised the Symptom Checklist 90-R, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory. Seminal parameters, gonadotrophins, sex steroids, cortisol and prolactin were analyzed to obtain biological data. Compared with questionnaires completed by normal populations those in the study group scored higher on the scales for ,conscientiousness', ,agreeableness', ,alexithymia' and ,somatization' and lower on the scale for ,neuroticism'. Regarding psychobiological correlations we found a negative correlation between seminal parameters and ,extraversion', ,anxiety' and ,psychoticism'. ,Alexithymia' was negatively correlated with stress hormones and ,conscientiousness' was correlated with sex steroids. The findings suggest above average social competence in the study group. The psychobiological correlations indicate a link between social-competence-related personality traits such as ,extraversion' and ,conscientiousness' and biological fertility characteristics. Implications of a higher alexithymia in infertile men, which is negatively correlated with stress hormones, are discussed. [source] Leptin and varicocele-related spermatogenesis dysfunction: animal experiment and clinical studyINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ANDROLOGY, Issue 5 2009Bin Chen Summary The objective of this study was to explore the relationships between varicocele-related spermatogenesis dysfunction and the expression of leptin and leptin receptors. In rats with experimental varicocele, the function of spermatogenesis, the expression of leptin and leptin receptors in testes were analysed; and in patients with varicocele-related male infertility, serum and seminal plasma levels of leptin, gonadal hormones and semen parameters were evaluated. In the testes of rats, leptin was expressed in seminiferous tubules and intersitium, leptin receptor was predominantly expressed in interstitium. The expression of leptin and its receptor in the testis of rats was not related to the weight of rat, but was inversely related to the weight of testis (r = ,0.408, p = 0.009 and r = ,0.433, p = 0.005, respectively), the Johnsen scores (r = ,0.916, p = 0.000 and r = ,0.863, p = 0.000, respectively), the seminiferous tubules diameter (r = ,0.853, p = 0.000 and r = ,0.870, p = 0.000, respectively) and the thickness of seminiferous epithelium (r = ,0.929, p = 0.000 and r = ,0.948, p = 0.000, respectively). In varicocele patients (N = 40), the sperm concentration and motility were significantly lower (p = 0.000) than those in the control group (N = 25), and the leptin level in seminal plasma was significantly higher (p = 0.000) than that in the control group. The leptin in serum and seminal plasma was positively related (r = 0.223, p = 0.002). The seminal plasma leptin level was inversely related to sperm concentration (r = ,0.632, p = 0.000) and motility (r = ,0.635, p = 0.000). There was no significant relation between serum leptin and seminal parameters and between leptin and gonadal hormone values. The dysfunction of spermatogenesis in varicocele-related infertile male is associated with increase in leptin and leptin receptors. Leptin may have local effects on the function of testis and spermatogenesis. Roudebush Abstract:, Since its discovery nearly 30 years ago platelet-activating factor (PAF) has emerged as one of the more important lipid mediators known. PAF (1- O -alkyl-2- O -acetyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphorylcholine) exists endogenously as a mixture of molecular species with structural variants of the alkyl moiety. PAF is a novel potent signaling phospholipid that has unique pleiotropic biological properties in addition to platelet activation. PAF also plays a significant role in reproduction and is present in the sperm of a number of primate species. PAF content in squirrel monkey sperm is significantly higher during the breeding season than the non-breeding season. PAF content in rhesus sperm has a significant relationship with sperm motility. PAF content in human sperm has a positive correlation with seminal parameters and pregnancy outcomes. The enzymes (lyso-PAF-acetyltransferase and PAF-acetylhydrolase) necessary for PAF activation and deactivation are present in primate sperm. PAF-acetylhydrolase may act as a ,decapacitation factor'. Removal of this enzyme during capacitation promotes PAF synthesis increasing primate motility and fertilization. PAF also plays a significant role in the fertilization process, enhancing the fertilization rates of oocytes. Enhanced embryo development has also been reported in oocytes fertilized with PAF-treated sperm. Exogenous PAF will also significantly improve primate artificial insemination pregnancy outcomes. PAF antagonists inhibit sperm motility, acrosome reaction, and fertilization thus suggesting the presence of receptors for PAF. The PAF-receptor is present on primate sperm, with altered transcript levels and distribution patterns on abnormal cells. Whereas, the exact mechanism of PAF in sperm function and reproduction is uncertain, its importance in normal primate fertility is substantial. [source] Predictors of improved seminal parameters and fertility after varicocele repair in young adultsANDROLOGIA, Issue 5 2009M. Rodriguez Peña Summary The aim of our study was to determine hormonal or biochemical markers in patients with clinically palpable left varicocele but without a history of infertility, with especial emphasis on nitric oxide, related with improved seminal parameters after varicocelectomy. Semen samples were obtained from 202 patients with left varicocele grade II or III. Nitric oxide levels in seminal plasma were determined by the Griess technique. Testicular volume was determined ultrasonographically in both testes and hormonal profile was measured. The post-operative sperm concentration increased significantly in patients with normal sperm count or moderate oligozoospermia, but we did not find an increment in sperm count in patients with mild and severe oligozoospermia after surgery. The mean percentage of normal motility significantly increased after surgery, but we did not observe a significant increment in morphologically normal sperm count and testicular volume after varicocele repair. Moreover, we did not find any correlation between nitric oxide concentrations and severity of oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia or abnormal sperm morphology in this population. It is concluded that in the general male population, varicocele repair is not associated with an improved semen profile in all cases. [source] Effect of varicocelectomy on seminal plasma transferrin values: a comparative clinical trialANDROLOGIA, Issue 1 2000A. Kosar Summary. The possible effects of varicocele and of the varicocelectomy procedure on Sertoli cell function were investigated. Transferrin concentrations in seminal plasma in men with varicocele before and 3 months after the operation were evaluated. Concentrations were measured in 10 normozoospermic fertile men as a control group and 32 oligozoospermic men with varicocele. Also, sperm analysis before and 3 months after the operation was performed. The mean transferrin level in seminal plasma was 108.4 ± 17.5 ,g, ml,1 in normoozoospermic men and 58.1 ± 14.4 ,g ml,1 in patients with varicocele before the operation (P < 0.0001). Mean sperm concentration, motility and normal morphology ratio showed significant improvement 3 months after the operation (P < 0.0001). Although the mean transferrin level increased slightly (to 60.8 ± 16.2 , ml,1; P=0.2), there was a statistically significant correlation between the change in transferrin concentration and the change in sperm concentration after the operation (r=0.56, P=0.0008). These results showed that elevated transferrin secretion after the treatment seems to be associated with an increase in sperm concentration after varicocelectomy. The finding of improvements in seminal parameters after the operation but insignificant changes in seminal transferrin levels indicates that varicocelectomy results in a greater improvement in sperm quality than in Sertoli cell function., [source] |
