Seasonal allergies and suicidality: results from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Objective:, Studies have shown an association between allergies and suicidality, and a seasonality of suicide has also been described. We hypothesize an association between history of seasonal allergies and suicide ideation and attempt. Method:, Data came from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication, a nationally representative sample (n = 5692) of adults living in the US. Logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (OR) controlling for the following: age, sex, race, smoking, asthma and depression. Results:, After weighting and adjustment, a positive and statistically significant association was found between history of seasonal allergies and history of suicidal ideation [adjusted OR = 1.27 (1.01,1.58)]. We found no association between history of seasonal allergies and history of suicide attempts [adjusted OR = 1.17 (0.89,1.52)]. Conclusion:, Findings from a population-based sample support the hypothesized relationship between allergies and suicidal ideation. Freeman Six alternative structural models of individualism,collectivism are reviewed and empirically compared in a confirmatory factor analysis of questionnaire data from an Australian student sample (N,=,340). Central to the debate about the structure of this broad social attitude are the issues of (1) polarity (are individualism and collectivism bipolar opposites, or orthogonal factors?) and (2) dimensionality (are individualism and collectivism themselves higher-order constructs subsuming several more specific factors and, if so, what are they?). The data from this Australian sample support a model that represents individualism and collectivism as a higher-order bipolar factor hierarchically subsuming several bipolar reference-group-specific individualisms and collectivisms. [source] A Novel MALDI Matrix for Analyzing Peptides and Proteins: Paraffin Wax Immobilized Matrix,CHINESE JOURNAL OF CHEMISTRY, Issue 1 2009Yuanlong WEI Abstract A new kind of MALDI matrix, termed paraffin wax immobilized matrix, was used to study peptide mixtures and proteins. During the preparation process, the paraffin wax was heated and coated on the stainless-steel target plate, and then 2,5-dihydrobenzoic acid (DHB) was deposited on the paraffin layer and stainless-steel target plate to obtain different kinds of matrix spots. The morphology of matrices on different supports and peptide-matrix co-crystallization were observed by a high resolution digital-video microscopy system. Peptide mixtures and bovine serum albumin (BSA) digests were used to investigate the performance of the immobilized matrices on the paraffin target. The MALDI-FTMS analysis results also showed that the detection sensitivity of matrices immobilized in the paraffin sample support was better than that on other sample supports. Gruszecka We report the results of experimental studies on the effects of sample supports in laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). LDI time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectra obtained for C60 and insulin samples deposited onto standard stainless steel substrate and/or onto some non-metallic materials (glass, scotch tape, floppy disc foil, Teflon foil, photocopy film), all recorded under identical, typical experimental conditions, have been compared with regard to their intensity and quality. The LDI investigations show that compared with stainless steel, glass and floppy disc foil sample supports boost (2,3.5 times) ion yields for C and C ions, respectively. The stainless steel and scotch tape sample supports are the best for the mass resolution of positive ions and the formation of (C60) (n,,,4) cluster ions, respectively. In the case of detection of insulin by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) we did not observe significant differences in sensitivity for the support materials tested.
