CONCURRENT GASTRIC AND COLONIC LOW-GRADE MUCOSA-ASSOCIATED LYMPHOID TISSUE LYMPHOMATA IN A PATIENT WITHOUT HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomata observed simultaneously in the stomach and colon are rare. We report concurrent gastric and colonic low-grade MALT lymphomata that originated from the same clone in a 58-year-old Japanese man without Helicobacter pylori infection. Endoscopy showed multiple erosive lesions in the gastric body and antrum, and a single flat elevation with an irregular margin in the sigmoid colon. Histopathological findings of both lesions suggested low-grade MALT lymphoma. Lymphoepithelial lesions were evident in the gastric lesions, but not in the colonic lesion. Southern blot analysis of lymphoma cells revealed the same immunoglobulin heavy-chain rearrangement pattern. The chromosomal translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) was also observed. After six courses of cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and predonisolone, the gastric lesions disappeared endoscopically, while the colonic lesion persisted. A sigmoidectomy was consequently performed. The chromosomal translocation may be related to the pathogenesis of the present MALT lymphoma case without H. pylori infection. It is interesting that the gastric and colonic lesions differed in response to treatment and in their endoscopic and histologic features, despite having the same origin. [source]


Local attachments and transnational everyday lives: second-generation Italians in Switzerland

Abstract Many descendants of migrants grow up in the context of lively transnational social relations to their parents' homeland. Among southern Italian migrants in Switzerland, these relations are imbued with the wish to return among the first generation, a dream fostered since the beginning of their migration after the Second World War. Second-generation Italians have developed different ways of negotiating the transnational livelihoods fostered by their parents on the one hand, and the wish for local attachments on the other. In this article I discuss how the children of Italian migrants have created their own cultural repertoires of Italianità and belonging within Switzerland and with co-ethnic peers, and how, for some, this sense of belonging evokes the wish for ,roots migration', the relocation to the parents' homeland. With the example of two trajectories of local attachment and transnationalism among members of the second generation of the same origin, I question existing work on the second generation that assumes commonalities among them on the grounds of ethnicity and region of origin. Research Article: Fingerprinting Analysis of Saposhnikovia divaricata using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and High Performance Liquid Chromatography

The 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) fingerprints of fractionated non-polar and polar extracts (control substance for plant drug [CSPD] A and B) from the roots of 12 specimens of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schischk were achieved with Fourier Transform (FT)-NMR spectrometer and assigned by comparison to each other and to the 1H NMR spectra of the isolated individual compounds. These fingerprints were found to be uniform in terms of the specificity for the implication of all 12 specimens being systematically of the same origin. The uniformity was further affirmed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which also revealed exactly identical specificity for the identified S. divaricata species with the 1H NMR appearances of corresponding CSPD on the part of the composition of characteristic constituents when comparing to corresponding individual compounds. This investigation unambiguously shows that the specific signals from the chemotaxonomically significant compounds of chromones and coumarins in S. divaricata are exhibited distinctively in the composite features of both 1H NMR fingerprints and HPLC profiles. The 1H NMR and HPLC profiles established can successfully be used as reference for the authentication of the origin of S. divaricata species as well as for chemotaxonomic studies. [source]


Yellow-brown earth on Quaternary red clay in Langxi County, Anhui Province in subtropical China: Evidence for paleoclimatic change in late Quaternary period,

Abstract In order to investigate the paleoclimatic changes in S China during the late Quaternary and their influence on pedogenesis and soil classification, a yellow-brown earth (YBE),red clay (RC) profile in Langxi County, Anhui Province was studied. The grain-size distribution and the major- and trace-element compositions of the profile indicate that the YBE of the profile shares the same origin with the YBE in Jiujiang and Xuancheng and the Xiashu loess in Zhenjiang, and the underlying RC also has aeolian characteristics and shares the same origin with the Xiashu loess. Grain-size characteristics, molecular ratios of SiO2/Al2O3, SiO2/(Al2O3+Fe2O3), and BA ([CaO+MgO+K2O+Na2O]/Al2O3) and other weathering indices (CaO/TiO2, MgO/TiO2, K2O/TiO2, Na2O/TiO2, and Rb/Sr) of the profile indicate that the RC is more strongly weathered than the YBE. Magnetic susceptibility (,lf) of the uniform red clay (URC) of the profile is significantly enhanced. However, that of the underlying reticulate red clay (RRC) is significantly decreased because of the paleogroundwater movement and cannot indicate its strong weathering properties. The YBE-RC profile in Langxi County recorded a great climatic change during late Quaternary: At that time, the pedogenic development of the RC was terminated and widespread dust deposition occurred. The parent material of the RC may be aeolian deposits which were accumulated before the last interglacial and were strongly weathered and rubified under the subsequent interglacial climate. It is observed that red soils, derived from the RC, and yellow-brown soils, derived from the YBE, coexist in the study area, which is contradictive to the theory of the zonal distribution of soils. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the history of Quaternary climatic changes when studying pedogenesis. [source]


Experimental observation of a strange temporal oscillation of X-ray Pendellösung fringes

As a strange property not explained by existing theories, it has been known from experiment that X-ray moiré and Pendellösung interference fringes show a small spatial oscillation in the beam path in free space that the diffraction image carrying those fringes is propagated after emerging from the crystal. In connection with the investigation into this strange fringe oscillation, it has been found, by an experiment successively recording Pendellösung-fringe topographs using an X-ray CCD camera, that X-ray Pendellösung fringes also show a small temporal oscillation. Characteristics of this temporal Pendellösung-fringe oscillation, namely irregularities in the fringe profile, the manner of fringe oscillation and a reciprocal correlation between oscillation amplitude and fringe contrast, are shown to be very similar to those of the previously reported spatial oscillation of moiré and Pendellösung fringes. Therefore this temporal oscillation is supposed to have the same origin as the spatial oscillation, revealing another section of the same phenomenon. This discovery of the temporal oscillation advances a step nearer to the full understanding of this strange phenomenon, while disclosing a new property of Pendellösung fringes. As well as the above, a three-dimensional profile representation (surface plot) is given of the image of Pendellösung fringes, to make it clear that unidentified fine intensity modulations, called subfringes in this paper, are produced superposed on the main fringe system. Overall inspection of the intensity profiles of the fringe-imaged topographs suggests that temporal intensity oscillations also occur on a more global scale than the extension of individual fringes, as an unidentified action of the wavefield. Streptococcus suis outbreak investigation using multiple-locus variable tandem repeat number analysis

ABSTRACT Two outbreaks of Streptococcus suis ST7 occurred in humans in 1998 and 2005 in China. PFGE of chromosome restriction fragments found all ST7 isolates to be indistinguishable. Due to the genetic homogeneity of ST7 isolates, development of a rapid sub-typing method with high discriminatory power for ST7 isolates is required. In this study, a novel method, MLVA, was developed to type S. suis serotype 2 strains. Further, this method was used to analyze outbreak-associated ST7 strains in China. A total of 144 ST7 S. suis isolates were sub-typed into 34 MLVA types. Among these, eight isolates from the 1998 outbreak were sub-typed into five MLVA types, of which four MLVA types were also detected in Sichuan in 2005. These data indicate that the pathogens responsible for the two outbreaks had the same origin. In addition, some observations also provided molecular evidence for the transmission route, possibly indicating that the MLVA method has usefulness in epidemiology. The developed MLVA scheme for S. suis has greater discriminative power than PFGE. The method described here may be useful for identifying the source of S. suis infection and monitoring its spread. Relationship between the atomic pair distribution function and small-angle scattering: implications for modeling of nanoparticles

The relationship between the equations used in the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) method and those commonly used in small-angle-scattering (SAS) analyses is explicitly shown. The origin of the sloping baseline, ,4,r,0, in PDFs of bulk materials is identified as originating from the SAS intensity that is neglected in PDF measurements. The nonlinear baseline in nanoparticles has the same origin, and contains information about the shape and size of the nanoparticles. [source]


New potential anti-cancer agents synergize with bortezomib and ABT-737 against prostate cancer

Abstract BACKGROUND We previously described the identification of a transcriptional inhibitor ARC and FoxM1 inhibitors, thiazole antibiotics, Siomycin A and thiostrepton that were able to induce potent p53-independent apoptosis in cancer cell lines of different origin. Here, we report the characterization of these drugs individually or in combination with ABT-737 and bortezomib on a panel of prostate cancer cell lines. METHODS DU 145, LNCaP and PC-3 prostate cancer cells were treated with ARC, Siomycin A and thiostrepton to evaluate their activity as single agents or in combination with ABT-737 and bortezomib to measure their synergistic potential in anti-proliferative and cell cycle assays. Chou-Talalay method was used to quantitate the synergistic interaction. Western blot method was used to determine Mcl-1 and FoxM1 expression and caspase-3 cleavage. RESULTS We show that ARC inhibited the viability of prostate cancer cells and induced apoptosis in low nanomolar concentration. It potently downregulated the expression of Mcl-1 and showed synergistic combination effect with Bcl-2 inhibitor ABT-737. Thiazole antibiotics, Siomycin A and thiostrepton inhibited growth, FoxM1 expression and induced cell death in prostate cancer cells in low micromolar concentrations. In addition, thiostrepton and ARC synergistically induced apoptosis in prostate cancer cells following combination treatment with proteasome inhibitor bortezomib. Furthermore, we found that all tested drug combinations were able to induce apoptosis selectively in transformed, but not normal cells of the same origin. CONCLUSIONS Based on their in vitro activity as single or combination agents, ARC, Siomycin A and thiostrepton represent potential candidates for drug development against prostate cancer. Genetic diversity of growth hormone receptor gene in cattle

ABSTRACT Growth hormone receptor (GHR) belongs to a member of the cytokine receptor superfamily. Polymorphism of presence or absence of an approximately 1.2 kbp LINE-1 element is observed in bovine GHR gene. The present study was carried out for estimating the genetic diversity and the origin of the LINE-1 element in 10 European, Southeastern Asian and East Asian cattle breeds or populations. Genotyping of the LINE-1 revealed predominant LINE-1 presence in European breeds (0.917,0.991), absence in the Bos taurus indicus populations (0.000,0.017), and intermediate presence in Northeast Asian cattle (0.417,0.522). From genetic features of LINE families, LINE-1 of GHR could be attributed to the same origin in both European and Asian cattle, and Asian LINE-1 may not be derived from recent introgression. This result suggested that LINE-1 in bovine GHR gene could have arisen in an ancestral population of Bos taurus taurus. [source]


Crystallographic model quality at a glance

A crystallographic macromolecular model is typically characterized by a list of quality criteria, such as R factors, deviations from ideal stereochemistry and average B factors, which are usually provided as tables in publications or in structural databases. In order to facilitate a quick model-quality evaluation, a graphical representation is proposed. Each key parameter such as R factor or bond-length deviation from `ideal values' is shown graphically as a point on a `ruler'. These rulers are plotted as a set of lines with the same origin, forming a hub and spokes. Different parts of the rulers are coloured differently to reflect the frequency (red for a low frequency, blue for a high frequency) with which the corresponding values are observed in a reference set of structures determined previously. The points for a given model marked on these lines are connected to form a polygon. A polygon that is strongly compressed or dilated along some axes reveals unusually low or high values of the corresponding characteristics. Polygon vertices in `red zones' indicate parameters which lie outside typical values. [source]
