Selected AbstractsA Comparison of Four Mohs Tissue Preparation Methods Using Porcine SkinDERMATOLOGIC SURGERY, Issue 9 2010FRCPC, WILLIAM LEAR MD OBJECTIVE Mohs surgery relies on high-quality, rapid tissue preparation and processing. This study evaluated four currently performed tissue preparation and processing methods for speed of processing and depth of cut into the tissue block to achieve a complete high-quality section. METHODS The following four methods were tested: cryoEMBEDDER, float, heat sink, and slide. Standardized specimens of porcine skin were used to ensure uniformity. We measured the time required for a technician to flatten, embed, and cut to the first complete section of each specimen. Additionally, we measured the depth in microns required to cut into an embedded specimen to achieve a complete section. RESULTS There were advantages and disadvantages of each method, and our findings suggest that the heat sink and float methods are more time efficient but that the slide and cryoEMBEDDER methods require less cutting into the specimen to obtain a complete section. This strategy, called the mega-event strategy, entails the quest for a high-profile event to serve as a stimulus to, and justification for, local development. We examine how the mega-event strategy has played out in the three US cities with contemporary Olympic experience: Los Angeles (1984), Atlanta (1996), and Salt Lake City (2002). We analyze the approaches taken by these three cities to bidding for and staging an Olympic mega-event. Our comparison focuses on the decade long period that cities use to prepare to host the games. We conclude with a discussion of lessons learned and the policy implications of the mega-event strategy on urban politics. ABSTRACT This paper describes an archival evaluation of the Juvenile Court Victim-Offender Mediation Program (VOMP) of the Utah State Courts in Salt Lake City. From 1997 to 2000, 147 victims and 330 offenders reported their attitudes towards their experiences in VOMP. Although victims were more satisfied than offenders for some outcomes, all participants reported exceptionally high satisfaction. These promising results are consistent with other published studies on the effectiveness of VOMP and other forms of restorative justice in demonstrating the promise of mediation in criminal justice. To determine the effectiveness of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) transplantation in isolation or within a synthetic extracellular matrix (sECM) for tissue regeneration of the scarred vocal fold lamina propria. Methods. In vitro stability and compatibility of mouse BM-MSC embedded in sECM was assessed by flow cytometry detection of BM-MSC marker expression and proliferation. Eighteen rats were subjected to vocal fold injury bilaterally, followed by 1 month post-treatment with unilateral injections of saline or sECM hydrogel (Extracel; Glycosan BioSystems, Inc., Salt Lake City, UT), green fluorescence protein (GFP)-mouse BM-MSC, or BM-MSC suspended in sECM. Outcomes measured 1 month after treatment included procollagen-III, fibronectin, hyaluronan synthase-III (HAS3), hyaluronidase (HYAL3), smooth muscle actin (SMA), and transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-,1) mRNA expression. The persistence of GFP BM-MSC, proliferation, apoptosis, and myofibroblast differentiation was assessed by immunofluorescence. Results. BM-MSC grown in vitro within sECM express Sca-1, are positive for hyaluronan receptor CD44, and continue to proliferate. In the in vivo study, groups injected with BM-MSC had detectable GFP-labeled BM-MSC remaining and showed proliferation and low apoptotic or myofibroblast markers compared to the contralateral side. Embedded BM-MSC in the sECM group exhibited increased levels of procollagen III, fibronectin, and TGF-,1. BM-MSC within sECM downregulated the expression of SMA compared to BM-MSC alone and exhibited upregulation of HYAL3 and no change in HAS3 compared to saline. Conclusions. Treatment of vocal fold scarring with BM-MSC injected in a sECM displayed the most favorable outcomes in ECM production, hyaluronan metabolism, myofibroblast differentiation, and production of TGF-,1. Reframing immigration through participatory action researchAREA, Issue 2 2010Caitlin Cahill Why do ,they' hate ,us'? is a painful starting point for trying to make sense of the tangled web of global restructuring, politics and racism. My discussion draws upon ,Dreaming of No Judgment', a participatory action research project developed with young people in Salt Lake City, Utah that explores the emotional and economic impacts of stereotypes upon immigrant communities. My analysis focuses upon the disjunctures between the dominant immigration discourse and the everyday experiences of young Latino immigrants. Drawing upon borderlands scholarship, starting with embodied everyday lived experiences and concerns, here I consider how the questions, concerns and feelings of young people offer new openings for reframing immigration. In conclusion, I reflect upon how PAR might be a transformative ,construction site' for reworking and responding to social injustices through the arts. Suzanne Horsley Government communication is pervasive and has an impact on every aspect of American public life. However, there is minimal theory-driven research in this critical area of communication. This research explores comparisons of communication practices and the status of professional development among the four levels of U.S. government organizations through a survey of 781 government communicators. The study identifies six significant differences and two similarities in how the public sector environment affects communication practices at the city, county, state, and federal levels. The findings were applied to a modification of the government communication decision wheel, a model that offers a theoretical foundation for the study of government communication within its unique environmental context free from the bias of corporate-centric research assumptions. The findings contribute to communication theory development for the underresearched public sector.
