A fossilized Opal A to Opal C/T transformation on the northeast Atlantic margin: support for a significantly elevated Palaeogeothermal gradient during the Neogene?

ABSTRACT Rock samples , collected from a recent deep-water exploration well drilled in the Faeroe-Shetland Channel, northwest of the UK , confirm that a distinctive high-amplitude seismic reflector that cross-cuts the Upper Palaeogene and Neogene succession and covers an area of 10 000 km2 is an example of a fossilized Opal A to Opal C/T (Cristobalite/Tridymite) transition. Analysis of these rock fragments tied to an extensive two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic database constrains the time at which the boundary was fossilized and in addition reveals the unusual geometrical characteristics of a relict bottom-simulating reflector. The diagenetic transformation of biogenic silica (Opal A) to Opal C/T is predominantly temperature-controlled and requires sediments that contain biogenic silica. The reflector (termed as Horizon E) probably initially represented a biosiliceous ooze or a siltstone that contained a component of biogenic silica that underwent transformation as the diagenetic front migrated upsection during burial. The parallelism it shows with a shallower early Pliocene reflector and its apparent upsection migration during a compressional episode in the basin indicate that it was active during the middle and late Miocene and ceased activity during the early Pliocene when there was between 200 and 400 m of overburden. The present-day burial depth of the boundary is ca. 700 m and the temperature at the inactive diagenetic front at the well location is 24 °C. Given these temperature and depth constraints, we hypothesize that even if this is an example of a relatively low-temperature Opal A to Opal C/T transformation, a temporarily elevated geothermal gradient of ca. 60 °C km,1 would have been required to initiate and arrest upsection migration of the boundary during the middle and late Miocene. Factors such as climatic deterioration and the onset of cold deep-water circulation are likely to only have had a contributory role in arresting the upward migration of the boundary. [source]


Impact of Grain Size on the Cerchar Abrasiveness Test

The Cerchar abrasiveness test is a common testing procedure for the prediction of tool wear but consistent and detailed recommendations of the testing procedure are inexistent until now. One point of disagreement is the required number of scratch tests per sample to obtain reliable results depending on the grain size of the samples. The focus of this work was to verify the influence of grain size on the number of required single examinations per sample. Grain size analyses were performed to get sum-curves of each tested rock sample. From the grain size data the median and the interquartile range of the grain sizes were calculated. CAI values after 5 and after 10 scratch tests were compared with the median and the interquartile-range of the grain size. No grain size dependency of the CAI deviation between 5 and 10 tests in the analysed range was observed. Einfluss der Korngröße auf den Cerchar Abrasivitätstest Der Cerchar-Abrasivitätstest ist ein häufig verwendeter Indextest zur Ermittlung der Abrasivität von Gesteinen gegenüber Bohrwerkzeugen. Bis jetzt existieren keine einheitlichen und detaillierten Empfehlungen für die Durchführung des Tests. Insbesondere gilt das für die Anzahl der durchzuführenden Tests in Abhängigkeit von der Korngröße der Gesteine. Es existiert lediglich ein Empfehlung, wonach bei grobkörnigen Gesteinen zehn anstatt der sonst üblichen fünf Tests durchzuführen seien. In dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss der Korngröße auf das Testergebnis in Abhängigkeit von der Anzahl der Tests untersucht. Dazu wurden an den getesteten Proben die Korngrößen bestimmt. Von den Korngrößendaten wurden die statistische Parameter Median und Interquartile-range, berechnet. Die CAI Ergebnisse nach fünf Ritztests und nach zehn Ritztest wurden dann mit dem Median und dem Interquartile-range der Korngrößen verglichen. Im untersuchten Korngrößenbereich wurde kein Einfluss der Korngröße auf die Differenzwerte von fünf und zehn Tests beobachtet. Daraus kann abgeleitet werden, dass im untersuchten Korngrößenbereich die Korngröße , entgegen den bisherigen Annahmen , keinen messbaren Einfluss auf das Ergebnis des CAI-Tests hat. [source]


Numerical estimation of REV and permeability tensor for fractured rock masses by composite element method

Abstract The Monte Carlo method is used to generate parent stochastic discrete fracture network, from which a series of fractured rock samples of different sizes and orientations are extracted. The fracture network combined with a regular grid forms composite element mesh of the fractured rock sample, in which each composite element is composed of sub-elements incised by fracture segments. The composite element method (CEM) for the seepage is implemented to obtain the nodal hydraulic potential as well as the seepage flow rates through the fractured rock samples. The application of CEM enables a large quantity of stochastic tests for the fractured rock samples because the pre-process is facilitated greatly. By changing the sizes and orientations of the samples, the analysis of the seepage characteristics is realized to evaluate the variation of the permeability components, the existence of the permeability tensor and the representative element volume. Major element and primary sulfur concentrations in Apollo 12 mare basalts: The view from melt inclusions

These lunar basalts are likely to be genetically related by olivine accumulation (Walker et al. 1976a, b). Our results show that major element compositions of melt inclusions from samples 12009, 12075, and 12020 follow model crystallization trends from a parental liquid similar in composition to whole rock sample 12009, thereby partially confirming the olivine accumulation hypothesis. In contrast, the compositions of melt inclusions from samples 12018, 12040, and 12035 fall away from model crystallization trends, suggesting that these samples crystallized from melts compositionally distinct from the 12009 parent liquid and therefore may not be strictly cogenetic with other members of the Apollo 12 picritic basalt suite. Sulfur concentrations in melt inclusions hosted in early crystallized olivine (Fo75) are consistent with a primary magmatic composition of 1050 ppm S, or about a factor of 2 greater than whole rock compositions with 400,600 ppm S. The Apollo 12 picritic basalt parental magma apparently experienced outgassing and loss of S during transport and eruption on the lunar surface. Even with the higher estimates of primary magmatic sulfur concentrations provided by the melt inclusions, the Apollo 12 picritic basalt magmas would have been undersaturated in sulfide in their mantle source regions and capable of transporting chalcophile elements from the lunar mantle to the surface. Therefore, the measured low concentration of chalcophile elements (e.g., Cu, Au, PGEs) in these lavas must be a primary feature of the lunar mantle and is not related to residual sulfide remaining in the mantle during melting. We estimate the sulfur concentration of the Apollo 12 mare basalt source regions to be ,75 ppm, which is significantly lower than that of the terrestrial mantle. [source]


The role of moisture cycling in the weathering of a quartz chlorite schist in a tropical environment: findings of a laboratory simulation

Abstract Long-term weathering of a quartz chlorite schist via wetting and drying was studied under a simulated tropical climate. Cubic rock samples (15 mm × 15 mm × 15 mm) were cut from larger rocks and subjected to time-compressed climatic conditions simulating the tropical wet season climate at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Fragmentation, moisture content and moisture uptake rate were monitored over 5000 cycles of wetting and drying. To determine the impact of climatic variables, five climatic regimes were simulated, varying water application, temperature and drying. One of the climatic regimes reproduced observed temperature and moisture variability at the Ranger Uranium Mine, but over a compressed time scale. It is shown that wetting and drying is capable of weathering quartz chlorite schist with changes expected over a real time period of decades. While wetting and drying alone does produce changes to rock morphology, the incorporation of temperature variation further enhances weathering rates. Although little fragmentation occurred in experiments, significant changes to internal pore structure were observed, which could potentially enhance other weathering mechanisms. Moisture variability is shown to lead to higher weathering rates than are observed when samples are subjected only to leaching. Finally, experiments were conducted on two rock samples from the same source having only subtle differences in mineralogy. The samples exhibited quite different weathering rates leading to the conclusion that our knowledge of the role of rock type and composition in weathering is insufficient for the accurate determination of weathering rates. The Influence of the Parameter "Temperature" on the Abrasiveness of Rock

The article deals with the influence of temperature produced in the cutting process on rock abrasiveness and tool wear. Basically it was to clarify which effects take place when quartz or rock with significant quartz content is heated up to a certain temperature. Does the quartz jump from low into high quartz happening at 573 °C cause an increase in abrasiveness of mineral and rock or not? To find out, a certain number of Cerchar abrasiveness index tests were done for a detailed investigation of this topic. Additionally, to get a better understanding what really happens inside rock structure additionally other rock parameters like unconfined compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength, ultrasonic wave velocity and density were determined on untreated and heated and subsequently cooled down rock samples. The final output of the research work showed that rocks show a very specific and significant reaction to thermal stresses induced into their structure resulting in a different behaviour regarding abrasiveness and fracturing. Einfluss des Parameters "Temperatur" auf die Abrasivität von Fels Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit dem Einfluss der während des Schneidprozesses entstehenden Temperatur auf die Abrasivität von Gestein und auf den Verschleiß des Schneidwerkzeugs. Es sollte geklärt werden, welche Effekte auftreten, wenn Quarz und Gestein mit erheblichem Quarzgehalt bis zu einer bestimmten Temperatur erhitzt werden. Erzeugt der Quarzsprung, der bei 573 °C stattfindet, von Tiefquarz zu Hochquarz einen Anstieg in der Abrasivität von Mineralen und Gesteinen oder nicht? Um dies herauszufinden, sind eine bestimmte Anzahl von Cerchar Abrasivitätstests durchgeführt worden. Um ein besseres Verständnis zu erhalten, was wirklich in der Struktur des Gesteins passiert, sind weitere Parameter wie einachsiale Druckfestigkeit, Spaltzugfestigkeit, Ultraschallwellengeschwindigkeit und Dichte an unbehandelten und aufgeheizten und wieder abgekühlten Gesteinsproben bestimmt worden. Die Forschungsarbeit hat gezeigt, dass Gesteine eine sehr spezifische und signifikante Reaktion auf thermische Beanspruchungen ihres Gefüges zeigen, was letztlich in einem verschiedenartigen Verhalten hinsichtlich Abrasivität und Bruchverhalten zum Ausdruck kommt. Electrodynamic Disaggregation: Does it Affect Apatite Fission-Track and (U-Th)/He Analyses?

While routinely being carried out by mechanical methods, electrodynamic disaggregation (ED) offers an alternative approach. The high-voltage discharges produced during the ED process create localised temperature peaks (10000 K) along a narrow plasma channel. In apatite, such high temperatures could potentially reduce the length of fission tracks, which start to anneal at temperatures > 60 °C, and could also enhance He diffusion, which becomes significant at 30,40 °C over geological time scales. A comparison of fission-track analyses and (U-Th)/He ages of apatites prepared both by mechanical (jaw crusher, disk mill) and ED processing provides a way of determining whether heating during the latter method has any significant effect. Apatites from three samples of different geological settings (an orthogneiss from Madagascar, the Fish Canyon Tuff, and a muscovite-gneiss from Greece) yielded statistically identical track length distributions compared to samples prepared mechanically. Additionally, (U-Th)/He ages of apatites from a leucogranite from Morocco prepared by both methods were indistinguishable. These first results indicated that during electrodynamic disaggregation apatite crystals were not heated enough to partially anneal the fission tracks or induce significant diffusive loss of He. La désagrégation électrodynamique (DE) offre une approche alternative aux méthodes mécaniques utilisées actuellement en routine. Les décharges de haute tension produite pendant le processus de DE entrainent la formation de pics de température (10000 K) localisés le long d'un étroit canal de plasma. Dans l'apatite, de telles températures peuvent potentiellement réduire la longueur des traces de fission, qui commencent à recuire à des températures > 60 °C, et peuvent aussi favoriser la diffusion de l'Hélium, qui devient significative à des températures de 30,40 °C sur des échelles de temps géologiques. Une comparaison des résultats obtenus à partir des analyses des traces de fission et des âges (U-Th)/He sur des apatites séparées par des moyens mécaniques (concasseur à mâchoires, broyeur à disque) et sur d'autres séparées par la méthode de désagrégation électrodynamique offre un moyen de déterminer si le chauffage lié,à la seconde méthode a un effet significatif. Les apatites séparées par la méthode DE à partir de trois échantillons provenant de différents contextes géologiques (un orthogneiss de Madagascar, le tuf de Fish Canyon et un gneiss à muscovite de Grèce) fournissent des distributions de longueurs de trace de fission statistiquement identiques par rapport à des échantillons préparés mécaniquement. En outre, des âges (U-Th)/He obtenus à partir d'apatites provenant d'un leucogranite du Maroc et préparées par les deux méthodes (DE et mécaniques) sont indiscernables. Ces premiers résultats indiquent que, pendant la désagrégation électrodynamique, les cristaux d'apatite n'ont pas été suffisamment chauffés pour soit recuire partiellement les traces de fission soit provoquer une perte significative par diffusion de l'He. Simultaneous Determination of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine in Six Geochemical Reference Materials Using Pyrohydrolysis, Ion Chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry

Halogens were first extracted from powdered samples using a pyrohydrolysis technique, then hydrolysis solutions were analysed by ion chromatography for F and Cl and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for Br and I. The detection limits in solutions were 100 ,g l,1 for both F and Cl and 10 ng l,1 for Br and I. Considering the extraction procedure, performed on a maximum of 500 mg of sample and producing 100 ml of pyrohydrolysis solution, detection limits in rock samples were 20 mg kg,1 for F and Cl and 2 ,g kg,1 for Br and I. The mean analytical errors on the studied composition ranges were estimated at 10 mg kg,1 for F and Cl, 100 ,g kg,1 for Br and 25 ,g kg,1 for I. The concentration values, based on repeated (generally > 10) sample analysis, were in good agreement generally with published values and narrowed the mean dispersion around mean values. Large dispersions are discussed in terms of samples heterogeneity and contaminations during sample preparation. Basaltic RMs were found to be more suitable for studies of halogen compositions than differentiated rock material, especially granites , the powders of which were heterogeneous in halogens at the 500 mg level. Les concentrations en halogènes (fluor, chlore, brome et iode) on été déterminées dans 6 matériaux géologiques de référence (BHVO-2, GS-N, JG-1, JR-1, JB-1b, JB-2), distribués par le GSJ, l'USGS et le CRPG. Les halogènes étaient d'abord extraits des échantillons, disponibles sous forme de poudre, par pyrohydrolyse. F et Cl sont ensuite analysés par chromatographie ionique, Br et I par spectrométrie de masse couplée à une source de plasma induit. Les limites de détection sont de 100 ,g l,1 pour F et Cl, et de 10 ng l,1 pour Br et I, respectivement. L'extraction des halogènes était réalisée sur 500 mg de poudre de roche, produisant 100 ml de solution d'extraction. Ainsi, pour les échantillons de roche, les limites de détection étaient de 20 mg kg,1 pour F et Cl, et 2 ,g kg,1 pour Br et I. L'erreur analytique moyenne sur la gamme de concentration étudiée est estimée à 10 mg kg,1 pour F et Cl, 100 ,g kg,1 pour Br et 25 ,g kg,1 pour I. Les valeurs de concentrations données, obtenues par l'analyse répétée (> 10) du même échantillon étaient en accord avec les valeurs reportées dans la littérature. Elles présentent en général une plus faible dispersion autour de la valeur moyenne. Dans le cas d'une importante dispersion des résultats, celle-ci est discutée en terme d'hétérogénéité de l'échantillon analysé et de contamination durant la préparation du matériel de référence. Les échantillons de référence de composition basaltique se révèlent être plus appropriés pour étudier les compositions en halogènes que les matériaux correspondant à des roches différenciées, en particulier des granites dont la distribution en halogènes apparaît hétérogène dans les poudres à l'échelle d'un aliquot de 500 mg. Contaminant Transport in Fractured Chalk: Laboratory and Field Experiments

Laboratory experiments were performed on chalk samples from Denmark and Israel to determine diffusion and distribution coefficients. Batch tests were used to define sorption isotherms for naphthalene and o-xylene. Linear sorption isotherms were observed and described with Henry-isotherms. Because of the high purity and low contents of clay minerals and organic carbon, Danish and white Israeli chalk generally have low retardation capacities. Con-trarily, gray Israeli chalk, with organic carbon fractions as high as 1.092%, remarkably retards organic contaminants. The Koc concept is not applicable to predicting distribution coefficients based on the organic carbon content in the chalk samples. Effective diffusivities of o -xylene, naphthalene, and several artificial tracers were determined using through-diffusion experiments. Based on measured diffusion coefficients and available literature values, a chalk specific exponent of 2.36 for Archie's law was derived, allowing a satisfactory estimate of relative diffusivities in chalk. A field-scale tracer test with uranine and lithium was performed in the Negev desert (Israel) to examine the transfer-ability of diffusivities determined on small rock samples in the laboratory. Due to low recovery rates of the tracer, a modified single fissure dispersion model was used for inverse modeling of the breakthrough curves. Resulting diffusivities deviate insignificantly from the laboratory values, which are considered to be representative for the investigated part of the aquifer and applicable in transport models. Temporal and spatial variability of cation and silica export in an alpine watershed, Emerald Lake, California

Abstract A reaction set of possible mineral weathering reactions is proposed to explain observed cation and silica export for the Emerald Lake watershed, a small Sierra Nevada, California catchment. The reaction set was calculated through a stoichiometric mole-balance method, using a multiyear record of stream flow and snowpack chemical analyses and site-specific mineral compositions. Reaction-set calculations were intended to explore how the processes controlling stream cation and silica export depend on differing bedrock mineralogy across the catchment as snowmelt and runoff patterns change over the year. Different regions within the watershed can be differentiated by lake inflow subdrainages, each exhibiting different stream-flow chemistry and calculated weathering stoichiometry, indicating that different silica and cation generation processes are dominant in wet steep portions of the catchment. Short-term differences in stream concentrations were assumed to reflect ion exchange equilibria and rapid biological processes, whereas long-term persistent stream concentration differences in different areas of the catchment were assumed to reflect spatial variability in mineral weathering stoichiometry. Mineralogical analyses of rock samples from the watershed provided site-specific chemical compositions of major mineral species for reaction calculations. Reaction sets were evaluated by linear regression of calculated versus observed differences between snowmelt and stream-flow chemistry and by a combined measure. Initially, single weathering reactions were balanced and evaluated to determine the reactions that best explained observed stream chemical export. Next, reactions were combined, using mineral compositions from different rock types to estimate the dependence of ion fluxes on lithology. The seasonal variability of major solute calculated fluxes is low, approximately one order of magnitude, relative to the observed three orders of magnitude variability in basin discharge. Influence of size on the constitutive equations of concrete or rock dowels

Abstract The numerical fracture analysis of non-homogeneous rock or concrete dowels subjected to shear and compression is described in detail. The method of analysis allows the consideration of scale and rate effects due to material non-homogeneity and fracture. The proposed approach is verified by comparing numerical predictions with experimental results reported in the literature for a series of small rock samples, since experimental evidence for large bodies is not yet available (2007). Results generated by Monte Carlo simulation using the so-called discrete element method to model the dowels suggest that a simple three parameters law can be used to predict the relationship between tangential stress at the base and lateral distortion. It is observed that the larger the size of the cubes, the smaller both the peak tangential stress and the rupture distortion. Size effects are also evaluated in samples with vertical restraint. The influence of loading rate is likewise numerically assessed for two sample sizes. The effect is compatible with experimental evidence available for concrete using small samples. Polymer-acid solutions: Their use for the enhancement of oil reservoir stimulation

Abstract A reduction in permeability occurring around the wellbore resulting from drilling, completion and/or workover fluids increases the flow resistance to the petroleum reservoir fluids and is defined as formation damage. Acidizing process removes near-wellbore damage and enhances hydrocarbon production from producing wells. This study investigates the effect of adding polymer as a retarding agent to acid solutions to slow and control the reaction in matrix acidizing treatment of carbonate rocks. Two different polymers, polyacrylamide (PAA) and polysaccharide (xanthan) and two different acids, acetic acid and formic acid, were used through this study. The results revealed that the presence of PAA did not change the viscosity of the acid solution significantly, while the viscosity of xanthan-acid solutions was decreased with increasing the acid concentration. Additionally, the reaction of polymer-acid solutions with the rock material was monitored under microscope. Original rock samples obtained from Saudi reservoirs containing mainly carbonate were used in the reaction. The PAA-acid solution did not show any decrease in the reaction rate compared to that of acid solution. Thus, the PAA solution applied in this study is not recommended as a retarder. However, xanthan-acid solutions showed a significant decrease in the reaction time. Therefore, xanthan was selected to perform further investigations in Rotating Disk Reactor at different pressures. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was conducted on pretreated and posttreated rock samples. This provides the opportunity to perform a detailed description of the rock surface and facilitates the identification of the changes occurring due to polymer-acid treatment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A succession of biotic and geochemical changes that occurred during the Cyrtograptus lundgreni Event (Late Wenlock) have been recorded from the ,pelagic' black-shales in the Goni section, eastern mid-Sardinia, Italy. The studied interval encompasses the Cyrtograptus rigidus to Pristiograptus dubius-Gothograptus nassa zones. The fossil association includes graptolites, chitinozoans and microplankton i.e. probable linings of agglutinated foraminifera and radiolaria capsular membranes. Analysis of the chitinozoan distribution revealed a succession of several chitinozoan associations with low species diversity and dominated by opportunistic species. Three chitinozoan faunal turnovers and three extinction events have been recorded. Two of them coincide with graptolite extinctions whereas one probably is of local significance. Disappearance of the chitinozoan and microplankton associations occurred during four consecutive graptolite zones. Geochemical data (trace elements analysis) showed significantly higher (up to c. 100%) values for Co and Cd in the sedimentary organic matter (SOM) than in the whole rock samples. Possible relationships between peaks of metal enrichment, the major faunal changes among chitinozoans, extinction events among chitinozoans and graptolites and, to a certain extent, oceanic events may be inferred. The first extinction datum is older that those occurring in Gotland, Sweden and Thüringen, Germany and is so far considered to be of local significance. The second extinction datum of Sardinia can be matched with Datum 1 of Gotland and Thüringen. A close correlation between the third extinction datum of Sardinia and Datum 2 of Thüringen and Gotland reinforces the importance of these events at global scale. [source]


Petrography, geochemistry, and alteration of country rocks from the Bosumtwi impact structure, Ghana

The country rocks, mainly meta-graywacke, shale, and phyllite of the Early Proterozoic Birimian Supergroup and some granites of similar age, are characterized by two generations of alteration. A pre-impact hydrothermal alteration, often along shear zones, is characterized by new growth of secondary minerals, such as chlorite, sericite, sulfides, and quartz, or replacement of some primary minerals, such as plagioclase and biotite, by secondary sericite and chlorite. A late, argillic alteration, mostly associated with the suevites, is characterized by alteration of the melt/glass clasts in the groundmass of suevites to phyllosilicates. Suevite, which occurs in restricted locations to the north and to the south-southwest of the crater rim, contains melt fragments, diaplectic quartz glass, ballen quartz, and clasts derived from the full variety of target rocks. No planar deformation features (PDFs) in quartz were found in the country rock samples, and only a few quartz grains in the suevite samples show PDFs, and in rare cases two sets of PDFs. Based on a total alkali element-silica (TAS) plot, the Bosumtwi granites have tonalitic to quartz-dioritic compositions. The Nb versus Y and Ta versus Yb discrimination plots show that these granites are of volcanic-arc tectonic provenance. Provenance studies of the metasedimentary rocks at the Bosumtwi crater have also indicated that the metasediments are volcanic-arc related. Compared to the average siderophile element contents of the upper continental crust, both country rocks and impact breccias of the Bosumtwi structure show elevated siderophile element contents. This, however, does not indicate the presence of an extraterrestrial component in Bosumtwi suevite, because the Birimian country rocks also have elevated siderophile element contents, which is thought to result from regional hydrothermal alteration that is also related to widespread sulfide and gold mineralization. Ferric iron in SNC meteorites as determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy: Implications for martian landers and martian oxygen fugacity

Also, considerable current effort is being made to understand the oxygen fugacity of martian magmas because of the effect of fO2 on mineral chemistry and crystallization processes. For these 2 reasons, the present study was conceived to acquire room temperature Mössbauer spectra of mineral separates and whole rock samples of 10 SNC meteorites. The results suggest that mineral identification using remote application of this technique will be most useful when the phases present have distinctive parameters arising from Fe in very different coordination polyhedra; for example, pyroxene coexisting with olivine can be discriminated easily, but opx versus cpx cannot. The MER goal of using Mössbauer spectroscopy to quantify the relative amounts of individual mineral species present will be difficult to satisfy if silicates are present because the lack of constraints on wt% FeO contents of individual silicate phases present will make modal calculations impossible. The remote Mössbauer spectroscopy will be most advantageous if the rocks analyzed are predominantly oxides with known stoichiometries, though these phases are not present in the SNCs. As for the detection of martian oxygen fugacity, no evidence exists in the SNC samples studied of a relationship between Fe3+ content and fO2 as calculated by independent methods. Possibly, all of the Fe3+ observed in olivine is the result of dehydrogenation rather than oxidation, and this process may also be the source of all the Fe3+ observed in pyroxene. The observed Fe3+ in pyroxene also likely records an equilibrium between pyroxene and melt at such low fO2 that little or no Fe3+ would be expected. [source]


Development, principles, and applications of automated ice fabric analyzers

Abstract We review the recent development of automated techniques to determine the fabric and texture of polycrystalline ice. The motivation for the study of ice fabric is first outlined. After a brief introduction to the relevant optical concepts, the classic manual technique for fabric measurement is described, along with early attempts at partial automation. Then, the general principles behind fully automated techniques are discussed. We describe in some detail the similarities and differences of the three modern instruments recently developed for ice fabric studies. Next, we discuss briefly X-ray, radar, and acoustic techniques for ice fabric characterization. We also discuss the principles behind automated optical techniques to measure fabric in quartz rock samples. Carlin-type Gold Prospects in Surigao del Norte, Mindanao Island, Philippines: Their Geology and Mineralization Potential

Abstract. Three calcareous sedimentary rock-hosted Carlin type-like gold prospects were mapped in a mineral production sharing agreement area of Philex Gold Philippines Inc. in Taganaan municipality, Surigao del Norte province in Mindanao island in the Philippines. They occur along a 20,25 km long trend of known epigenetic gold and porphyry copper deposits that lie close to several splays of the Philippine Fault Zone. The gold district forms part of the Late Cretaceous Eastern Mindanao Range that hosts early Paleogene and late Pliocene to Quaternary intrusive rocks. Gold is invisible in the jasperoid outcrops in Lascogon, Napo, and Danao prospects. The jasperoids occur in lenses of marls belonging to the Taganaan Marl Member that is associated to a turbiditic member of the Middle Miocene Mabuhay Formation. The marl lenses include gently dipping interbedded silty limestones and calcareous shales. The "invisible gold" mineralization in silicified calcareous rocks resembles Carlin-type deposits. Based on the mapped igneous and sedimentary rocks, a possible heat source for the gold mineralization is either or both of the two main phases of intrusion, Mabuhay An-desite or Alipao Andesite Porphyry. Forty-eight rock samples, fifteen stream sediment samples, and one soil sample were critical in delineating the general features of the potential Carlin-type prospects. The gold grades of jasperoids in the three prospects range from trace amounts to 20 g/t Au. Regional studies of gold and porphyry copper mineralization in the Surigao del Norte mineral district are important in delineating ore targets for drilling in the three prospects. [source]


Lead Isotopic Composition and Lead Source in the Bainiuchang Ag-polymetallic Deposit, Yunnan Province, China

Abstract The Bainiuchang deposit in Yunnan Province, China, is located geographically between the Gejiu ore field and the Dulong ore field. In addition to the >7000 t Ag reserves, the deposit also boasts of large-scale Pb, Zn and Sn reserves with a lot of dispersed elements (In, Cd, Ge, Ga, etc.). We have determined systematically the Pb isotope composition of the deposit. The Pb isotope ratios of the ores that are of sea-floor exhalative sedimentary origin in the northwest of the mining district, are 206Pb/204Pb = 17.758-18.537, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.175-15.862 and 208Pb/204Pb = 37.289-39.424, while those of ores that are of magmatic hydrothermal superimposition origin in the southeast of the mining district, are 206Pb/204Pb = 17.264-18.359, 207Pb/204Pb = 14.843-15.683 and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.481-38.838, respectively. In terms of the Pb isotope composition of feldspar in magmatic rocks or magmatic whole-rock samples from the mining district, we have determined the Pb isotope composition and acquired the Pb isotope ratios as: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.224-18.700, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.595-15.797 and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.193-39.608. Then, in the light of the Pb isotope composition of metamorphic rock samples from the Proterozoic basement exposed in the Dulong ore field, we have determined the Pb isotope composition and obtained the isotope ratios as: 206Pb/204Pb = 18.434-19.119, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.644-15.693, and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.514-38.832. And the Pb isotope ratios of Cambrian sedimentary rocks, which are exposed in the Bainiuchang mining district, are 206Pb/204Pb = 18.307-19.206, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.622-15.809, and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.436-39.932. By comparing the two types of ores with respect to their Pb isotope compositions, it is indicated that lead in the Bainiuchang deposit was derived largely from the lower-crust granulite which is earlier than Neoproterozoic in age, but the Yanshanian magmatic hydrothermal fluids probably provided a part of ore-forming elements such as Sn for the ore blocks in the south of the mining district.
