WHITFIELD GIBBONS biodiversidad; declinación de anfibios; recuperación de humedales sequía; uso de suelo Abstract:,Despite the continuing loss of wetland habitats and associated declines in amphibian populations, attempts to translate wetland losses into measurable losses to ecosystems have been lacking. We estimated the potential productivity from the amphibian community that would be compromised by the loss of a single isolated wetland that has been protected from most industrial, agricultural, and urban impacts for the past 54 years. We used a continuous drift fence at Ellenton Bay, a 10-ha freshwater wetland on the Savannah River Site, near Aiken, South Carolina (U.S.A.), to sample all amphibians for 1 year following a prolonged drought. Despite intensive agricultural use of the land surrounding Ellenton Bay prior to 1951, we documented 24 species and remarkably high numbers and biomass of juvenile amphibians (>360,000 individuals; >1,400 kg) produced during one breeding season. Anurans (17 species) were more abundant than salamanders (7 species), comprising 96.4% of individual captures. Most (95.9%) of the amphibian biomass came from 232095 individuals of a single species of anuran (southern leopard frog[Rana sphenocephala]). Our results revealed the resilience of an amphibian community to natural stressors and historical habitat alteration and the potential magnitude of biomass and energy transfer from isolated wetlands to surrounding terrestrial habitat. We attributed the postdrought success of amphibians to a combination of adult longevity (often >5 years), a reduction in predator abundance, and an abundance of larval food resources. Likewise, the increase of forest cover around Ellenton Bay from <20% in 1951 to >60% in 2001 probably contributed to the long-term persistence of amphibians at this site. Our findings provide an optimistic counterpoint to the issue of the global decline of biological diversity by demonstrating that conservation efforts can mitigate historical habitat degradation. [source] Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling of Aquifer Stratigraphy, South CarolinaGROUND WATER, Issue 2 2000Russell B. Miller Deterministic and stochastic methods of three-dimensional hydrogeologic modeling are applied to characterization of contaminated Eocene aquifers at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina. The results address several important issues, including the use of multiple types of data in creating high-resolution aquifer models and the application of sequence-stratigraphic constraints. Specific procedures used include defining grid architecture stratigraphically, upscaling, modeling lithologic properties, and creating multiple equiprobable realizations of aquifer stratigraphy. An important question answered by the study is how to incorporate gamma-ray borehole-geophysical data in areas of anomalous log response, which occurs commonly in aquifers and confining units of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and other areas. To overcome this problem, gamma-ray models were conditioned to grain-size and lithofacies realizations. The investigation contributes to identifying potential pathways for downward migration of contaminants, which have been detected in confined aquifers at the modeling site. The approach followed in this investigation produces quantitative, stratigraphically constrained, geocellular models that incorporate multiple types of data from borehole-geophysical logs and continuous cores. The use of core-based stochastic realizations in conditioning deterministic models provides the advantage of incorporating lithologic information based on direct observations of cores rather than using only indirect measurements from geophysical logs. The high resolution of the models is demonstrated by the representation of thin, discontinuous clay beds that act as local barriers to flow. The models are effective in depicting the contrasts in geometry and heterogeneity between sheet-like nearshore-transgressive sands and laterally discontinuous sands of complex shoreline environments. [source] Seasonal diets of insectivorous birds using canopy gaps in a bottomland forestJOURNAL OF FIELD ORNITHOLOGY, Issue 1 2007Christopher E. Moorman ABSTRACT Little is known about how insectivorous bird diets are influenced by arthropod availability and about how these relationships vary seasonally. We captured birds in forest-canopy gaps and adjacent mature forest during 2001 and 2002 at the Savannah River Site in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and flushed their crops to gather information about arthropods eaten during four periods: spring migration, breeding, postbreeding, and fall migration. Arthropod availability for foliage- and ground-gleaning birds was examined by leaf clipping and pitfall trapping. Coleopterans and Hemipterans were used by foliage- and ground-gleaners more than expected during all periods, whereas arthropods in the orders Araneae and Hymenoptera were used as, or less than, expected based on availability during all periods. Ground-gleaning birds used Homopterans and Lepidopterans in proportions higher than availability during all periods. Arthropod use by birds was consistent from spring through fall migration, with no apparent seasonal shift in diet. Based on concurrent studies, heavily used orders of arthropods were equally abundant or slightly less abundant in canopy gaps than in the surrounding mature forest, but bird species were most frequently detected in gaps. Such results suggest that preferential feeding on arthropods by foliage-gleaning birds in gap habitats reduced arthropod densities or, alternatively, that bird use of gap and forest habitat was not determined by food resources. The abundance of arthropods across the stand may have allowed birds to remain in the densely vegetated gaps where thick cover provides protection from predators. SINOPSIS Se conoce poco de como la dieta de insectívoros está influenciada por la disponibilidad de artrópodos y de como estas interacciones varían estacionalmente. Capturamos aves en huecos o aberturas del docel de un bosque, adyacente a un bosque maduro durante el 2001 y el 2002 en Savannah River Site, Condado Garnwell, Carolina del Sur. Dement PhD Abstract Background The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) established medical screening programs at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Oak Ridge Reservation, the Savannah River Site, and the Amchitka site starting in 1996. Workers participating in these programs have been followed to determine their vital status and mortality experience through December 31, 2004. Methods A cohort of 8,976 former construction workers from Hanford, Savannah River, Oak Ridge, and Amchitka was followed using the National Death Index through December 31, 2004, to ascertain vital status and causes of death. Cause-specific standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were calculated based on US death rates. Results Six hundred and seventy-four deaths occurred in this cohort and overall mortality was slightly less than expected (SMR,=,0.93, 95% CI,=,0.86,1.01), indicating a "healthy worker effect." However, significantly excess mortality was observed for all cancers (SMR,=,1.28, 95% CI,=,1.13,1.45), lung cancer (SMR,=,1.54, 95% CI,=,1.24,1.87), mesothelioma (SMR,=,5.93, 95% CI,=,2.56,11.68), and asbestosis (SMR,=,33.89, 95% CI,=,18.03,57.95). Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was in excess at Oak Ridge and multiple myeloma was in excess at Hanford. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was significantly elevated among workers at the Savannah River Site (SMR,=,1.92, 95% CI,=,1.02,3.29). Conclusions DOE construction workers at these four sites were found to have significantly excess risk for combined cancer sites included in the Department of Labor' Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOCIPA). Richardson PhD Abstract Background Workers employed at the Savannah River Site (SRS) were potentially exposed to a range of chemical and physical hazards, many of which are poorly characterized. We therefore compared the observed deaths among workers to expectations based upon death rates for referent populations. Methods The cohort included 18,883 SRS workers hired between 1950 and 1986. Vital status and cause of death information were ascertained through 2002. Sex-specific standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were computed using U.S. and South Carolina mortality rates. SMRs were tabulated separately for monthly-, weekly-, and hourly-paid men. Results Males had fewer deaths from all causes [SMR,=,0.80, 90% confidence interval (CI): 0.78, 0.82], all cancers (SMR,=,0.85, 90% CI: 0.81, 0.89), and lung cancer (SMR,=,0.88, 90% CI: 0.82, 0.95) than expected based upon US mortality rates. The SMR for cancer of the pleura was 4.25 (90% CI: 1.99, 7.97) for men. The SMR for leukemia was greater than unity for monthly-paid (SMR,=,1.33, 90% CI: 0.88, 1.93) and hourly-paid (SMR=1.36, 90% CI: 1.02, 1.78) men. Female workers had fewer deaths from all causes (SMR,=,0.75, 90% CI: 0.69, 0.82) than expected, but more deaths than expected from cancer of the kidney (SMR,=,2.58, 90% CI: 1.21, 4.84) and skin (SMR,=,3.90, 90% CI: 2.11, 6.61). Conclusions While the observed numbers of deaths in most categories of cause of death were less than expected, there are greater than expected numbers of deaths due to cancer of the pleura and leukemia, particularly among hourly-paid male workers. [source] Soil vapor extraction system design: A case study comparing vacuum and pore-gas velocity cutoff criteriaREMEDIATION, Issue 1 2006Kenneth L. Dixon Soil vapor extraction (SVE) systems are typically designed based on the results of a vadose-zone pumping test (transient or steady-state) using a pressure criterion to establish the zone of influence (ZOI). A common problem associated with pressure-based SVE design is overestimating the ZOI of the extraction well. As a result, design strategies based upon critical pore- gas velocity (CPGV) have become more common. Field tests were conducted at the Savannah River Site (SRS) to determine the influence of a vapor extraction well based upon both a pressure and pore- gas velocity design criterion. The results from these tests show that an SVE system designed based upon a CPGV is more robust and will have shorter cleanup times due to increased flow throughout the treatment zone. Pressure-based SVE design may be appropriate in applications where soil gas containment is the primary objective; however, in cases where the capture and removal of contaminated soil gas is the primary objective, CPGV is a better design criterion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] The Use of Natural Systems to Remediate Groundwater: Department of Energy Experience at the Savannah River SiteREMEDIATION, Issue 3 2002Gerald C. Blount Natural remediation is moving toward the forefront as engineers clean groundwater at the Savannah River Site (SRS), a major Department of Energy (DOE) installation near Aiken, South Carolina. This article reviews two successful, innovative remediation methods currently being deployed: biosparging to treat chlorinated solvents and phytoremediation to address tritium in groundwater. The biosparging system reintroduces oxygen into the groundwater and injects nutrient compounds for in-situ remediation. The system has greatly reduced the concentrations of trichloroethylene (TCE) and vinyl chloride in wells downgradient from a sanitary landfill (SLF). Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that promises effective and inexpensive cleanup of certain hazardous wastes. Using natural processes, plants can break down, trap and hold, or transpire contaminants. This article discusses the use of phytoremediation to reduce the discharge of tritium to an on-site stream at SRS. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals Inc.* [source] Simulation of ice phenology on Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories, CanadaHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 18 2002Patrick Ménard Abstract A one-dimensional thermodynamic lake ice model (Canadian Lake Ice Model or CLIMo) is used to simulate ice phenology on Great Slave Lake (GSL) in the Mackenzie River basin, Northwest Territories, Canada. Model simulations are validated against freeze-up and break-up dates, as well as ice thickness and on-ice snow depth measurements made in situ at three sites on GSL (Back Bay near Yellowknife, 1960,91; Hay River, 1965,91; Charlton Bay near Fort Reliance, 1977,90). Freeze-up and break-up dates from the lake ice model are also compared with those derived from SSM/I 85 GHz passive microwave imagery over the entire lake surface (1988,99). Results show a very good agreement between observed and simulated ice thickness and freeze-up/break-up dates over the 30,40 years of observations, particularly for the Back Bay and Hay River sites. CLIMo simulates the ice thickness and annual freeze-up/break-dates with a mean error of 7 cm and 4 days respectively. However, some limitations have been identified regarding the rather simplistic approach used to characterize the temporal evolution of snow cover on ice. Bell Abstract:, In 2003, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency studied total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in periphyton at eight rivers in the United States in coordination with a larger USGS study on mercury cycling in rivers. Periphyton samples were collected using trace element clean techniques and NAWQA sampling protocols in spring and fall from targeted habitats (streambed surface-sediment, cobble, or woody snags) at each river site. A positive correlation was observed between concentrations of THg and MeHg in periphyton (r2 = 0.88, in log-log space). Mean MeHg and THg concentrations in surface-sediment periphyton were significantly higher (1,333 ng/m2 for MeHg and 53,980 ng/m2 for THg) than cobble (64 ng/m2 for MeHg and 1,192 ng/m2 for THg) or woody snag (71 ng/m2 for MeHg and 1,089 ng/m2 for THg) periphyton. Concentrations of THg in surface-sediment periphyton had a strong positive correlation with concentrations of THg in sediment (dry weight). The ratio of MeHg:THg in surface-sediment periphyton increased with the ratio of MeHg:THg in sediment. These data suggest periphyton may play a key role in mercury bioaccumulation in river ecosystems. [source] Activity-induced dental modification in holocene siberian hunter-fisher-gatherersAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Andrea Waters-Rist Abstract The use of teeth as tools provides clues to past subsistence patterns and cultural practices. Five Holocene period hunter-fisher-gatherer mortuary sites from the south-western region of Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russian Federation, are observed for activity-induced dental modification (AIDM) to further characterize their adaptive regimes. Grooves on the occlusal surfaces of teeth are observed in 25 out of 123 individuals (20.3%) and were most likely produced during the processing of fibers from plants and animals, for making items such as nets and cordage. Regional variation in the frequency of individuals with occlusal grooves is found in riverine versus lakeshore sites. This variation suggests that production of material culture items differed, perhaps in relation to different fishing practices. There is also variation in the distribution of grooves by sex: grooves are found predominately in females, except at the Late Neolithic-Bronze Age river site of Ust'-Ida I where grooves are found exclusively in males. Occlusal grooves were cast using polyvinylsiloxane and maxillary canine impressions were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine striation patterns. Variation in striae orientation suggests that a variety of activities, and/or different manufacturing techniques, were involved in groove production. Overall, the variability in occlusal groove frequency, sex and regional distribution, and microscopic striae patterns, points to the multiplicity of activities and ways in which people used their mouths and teeth in cultural activities. [source] Effect of weather factors on populations of Helicoverpa armigera moths at cotton-based agro-ecological sitesENTOMOLOGICAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2009Ghulam Mustafa AHEER Abstract Pheromone trapping was used to monitor populations of the moth Helicoverpa armigera at five cotton-based agro-ecological sites , river, vegetable, orchard, forest and clean cultivation (areas under only cotton cultivation) , in the Bahawalpur district, Pakistan. Three locations at each site were chosen and three pheromone traps at each location were installed in cotton fields. Moth catches were recorded at 15,20 day intervals from 24 October 2004 to 19 December 2006. In 2004, the river sites showed the maximum trapped population of H. armigera (0.22/trap) followed by 0.165 per trap at the vegetable sites. Orchard, clean cultivation and forest sites had zero moth catches. In 2005, the river sites again showed the highest trapped population (0.57/trap), followed by clean cultivation (0.45/trap), vegetable (0.44/trap), orchard (0.40/trap) and forest (0.29/trap). The moths appeared during July to December and March to May. In 2006, sites showed non-significant difference, with a population range of 0.47 to 0.97 moths per trap. On average, river sites peaked at 0.49 per trap, followed by vegetable (0.38), clean cultivation (0.47), orchard (0.35) and forest (0.25) sites. The peak was observed on 3 April 2006, and moths appeared during February to July and October to December. The minimum temperature in river, forest and clean cultivation sites; the maximum temperature in orchard sites; and the average temperature in river, orchard, forest and clean cultivation sites showed significant positive correlations with trapped moth populations. Relative humidity showed significant negative correlation with population at the orchard sites in 2005. All weather factors during 2004 and 2006 showed non-significant correlations with the moth populations. No model was found to be best fit by multiple linear regression analysis; however, relative humidity, minimum temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature and maximum temperature contributed 8.40, 10.23, 2.43, 4.53 and 2.53% to the population fluctuation of the moth at river, vegetable, orchard, forest and clean cultivation sites, respectively. [source] Distribution of cytochrome P4501A1,inducing chemicals in sediments of the Delaware River-Bay system, USAENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 8 2002Daniel L. McCoy Abstract The Delaware River-Bays system, USA, was the subject of a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that involved chemical and biological analyses, including the use of the biomarker P450 human reporter gene system (HRGS) to document the occurrence and distribution of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A1-inducing compounds. Sediment extracts from 81 locations along the Delaware River, Delaware Bay and immediate coastline were tested by utilizing HRGS as an inexpensive screening test, and were also analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls, with selected stations analyzed for dioxins and furans. Benthic community degradation has been observed when benzo[a]pyrene equivalents (BaPEq) exceeded 60 ,g/g. The average levels of BaPEq for the largely industrialized upper, middle, and lower regions of the Delaware River were 107, 62, and 5 ,g/g, respectively, excluding outliers. Tributaries leading into river averaged 21 ,g/g BaPEq, whereas the central Bay and open coast had relatively low values (2.0 and 0.5 ,g/g BaPEq, respectively). The HRGS values were highly correlated with total PAHs measured in the same sediment samples (r2 = 0.81). Overall, contamination levels consistently decreased from the upper and middle river sites as collection locations progressed down through the lower river and bay to the coast. Thus, despite the relatively high contaminant load in the river system, Delaware Bay and the immediate coastline seem to have relatively low levels of contaminants, and, therefore, impacts on the benthic organisms in the bay and coast would not be expected from these findings. [source] Environmental Manipulation to Avoid a Unique Predator: Drinking Hole Excavation in the Agile Wallaby, Macropus agilisETHOLOGY, Issue 2 2007J. Sean Doody The simplest way of avoiding an ambush predator is to entirely avoid the habitat in which it hunts. However, this strategy requires that the prey species find alternative, risk-free sources of essential resources. Herein we describe a novel strategy used by agile wallabies (Macropus agilis) to avoid saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) predation: the creation of risk-free sites to obtain water. We studied the anti-predator behaviour of agile wallabies for 3 yr during the dry season along the Daly River, Northern Territory, Australia. Wallabies excavated holes in the sand 0.5,18.0 m from the water's edge, and preferred to drink from these holes over drinking from the river. We determined a hierarchy of preferred drinking-site options for the wallabies: non-river sites: springs, puddles, excavated holes; and river sites: sites with cover, shallow water sites and deep water sites. Drinking holes were twice as far from the water's edge in a river stretch with high crocodile density (2/km) than those in a stretch with low crocodile density (0.08/km). However, site differences could also be explained by river bank morphology. Collectively, our findings indicate that agile wallabies excavate drinking holes to avoid crocodile predation. We contend that this behaviour represents environmental manipulation specifically to alter the risk associated with obtaining a key resource. [source] Testing species,stone area and species,bryophyte cover relationships in riverine macroinvertebrates at small scalesFRESHWATER BIOLOGY, Issue 3 2008JANI HEINO Summary 1. The species,area relationship is considered amongst the few genuine laws in ecology. Although positive species richness,stone area relationships have been found previously in stream systems, very few studies have simultaneously examined species,individuals, individuals,area, species,bryophyte biomass and individuals,bryophyte biomass relationships. We examined these relationships based on temporally replicated assessments of macroinvertebrates on stones at two river sites. 2. We found only one significant species,area relationship out of six relationship tested, and two significant individuals,area relationships. Even these significant relationships were weak, however. By contrast, we detected significant and rather strong relationships between species richness and the number of individuals at both river sites on all three sampling dates. We also found significant relationships of both species richness and the number of individuals with bryophyte biomass at both river sites on all sampling occasions. One of the river sites was disturbed by a bulldozer, and the species,bryophyte biomass relationships were somewhat stronger after the disturbance event. 3. Our findings are quite surprising, given that there were very weak species,area relationships on stream stones. By contrast, our results suggest a pivotal role for bryophyte biomass in determining the species richness and the number of individuals of stream macroinvertebrates at this small scale. The most probably origin of these relationships begins with bryophyte cover, which determines the number of individuals, and subsequently passively affects species richness. Thus, there is not necessarily a direct mechanism that determines the variability of species richness on stream stones. 4. Experimental studies are needed to disentangle the various mechanisms (e.g. passive sampling, provision of more food, more niche space, flood disturbance refugia) by which bryophyte biomass affects stream macroinvertebrates. [source] Distribution of benthic diatoms in U.S. rivers in relation to conductivity and ionic compositionFRESHWATER BIOLOGY, Issue 8 2003Marina Potapova Summary 1We quantified the relationships between diatom relative abundance and water conductivity and ionic composition, using a dataset of 3239 benthic diatom samples collected from 1109 river sites throughout the U.S.A. [U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program dataset]. This dataset provided a unique opportunity to explore the autecology of freshwater diatoms over a broad range of environmental conditions. 2Conductivity ranged from 10 to 14 500 ,S cm,1, but most of the rivers had moderate conductivity (interquartile range 180,618 ,S cm,1). Calcium and bicarbonate were the dominant ions. Ionic composition, however, varied greatly because of the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors. 3Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that conductivity and abundances of major ions (HCO + CO, Cl,, SO, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) all explained a statistically significant amount of the variation in assemblage composition of benthic diatoms. Concentrations of HCO + CO and Ca2+ were the most significant sources of environmental variance. 4The CCA showed that the gradient of ionic composition explaining most variation in diatom assemblage structure ranged from waters dominated by Ca2+ and HCO + CO to waters with higher proportions of Na+, K+, and Cl,. The CCA also revealed that the distributions of some diatoms correlated strongly with proportions of individual cations and anions, and with the ratio of monovalent to divalent cations. 5We present species indicator values (optima) for conductivity, major ions and proportions of those ions. We also identify diatom taxa characteristic of specific major-ion chemistries. Bryophyte species and their biomasses were determined from 20 to 25 quadrats in eight river and six stream sites in northern Finland. 2,Regression analyses revealed a quadratic relationship between richness and biomass in only two of the river sites and a positive correlation in one other. A quadratic relationship was detected in three stream sites and richness increased linearly with biomass in another. 3,We also tested for the hump-shaped pattern across individual stream boulders, representing an elevational gradient from continuously submerged to permanently dry conditions, with an intermediate zone with fluctuating water level. 4,Species richness-standing crop relationship conformed to the hump-backed model only when samples from all three microhabitats were included in the analysis. A significant positive correlation occurred in the exposed low biomass end of the gradient which is characterized by semi-aquatic species, whereas the relationship tended to be negative in permanently submerged areas with high biomass of large canopy-forming species. Quadrats close to the water level had intermediate standing crop and highest species richness. 5,Species dominant at either end of the gradient appeared unable to monopolize space in the intermediate zone where disturbances (e.g. scouring by ice) detach mosses from the substratum, creating vacant gaps for colonization. The unimodal relationship between richness and biomass is likely to occur only in streams that contain large boulders protruding above the water line, thus providing scope for community diversification along very short vertical distances.
