Higher Education Classroom Fail to Meet Needs of Faculty and Students

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were (1) to determine differences between faculty and student opinions about university classrooms when the User's Environmental Interaction Framework (UEIF) model's quadrants were considered together, (2) to determine the positive, negative, and different effects between these populations within each UEIF quadrant, and (3) to determine faculty and student use. RESEARCH DESIGN: The User's Environmental Framework (UEIF) guided the research at a large university. This framework has four quadrants: environmental/value dimensions, and behavioral/internal responses, prox-emics concepts, and interactional influences. The study had two parts: (1) a 48-question questionnaire, and (2) behavioral observations surveying both faculty and students (120 subjects) who used 15 general purpose classrooms. ANALYSIS: Stepwise Discriminant Analysis determined which subset of questions best separates student from faculty responses. Canonical Discriminant Analysis further explained relationships. KEY FINDINGS: Return rate was 67% and four observations of each classroom were conducted. Faculty and students agreed on the majority of the items. Subjects felt lighting, air quality, maintenance, equipment, and general comfort were adequate. There was a lack of commitment to the classrooms and subjects had little desire to stay in these rooms. Faculty and students disagreed on 10 questions. Faculty felt the classrooms did not convey a positive experience relating to noise control, seating flexibility, and lacked provision for social interaction. Students found signage inadequate and felt classrooms were uninspiring, nonanticipatory, and lacking symbolic meaning. Behavioral observations supported these concerns. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that general purpose classrooms on this campus do not meet all needs of faculty or students. Population dynamics and reproduction of Northern Lapwings Vanellus vanellus in a meadow restoration area in central Sweden

To investigate the effectiveness of a meadow restoration programme, we studied the relationships between population changes and environmental changes, return rates and hatching success in a population of Northern Lapwings Vanellus vanellus. The study was performed on mixed farmland (59 km2) in central Sweden, an area that underwent extensive meadow restoration between 1985 and 1994. The study included more than 2600 nests, supplemented with observations of 127 individually colour-ringed Northern Lapwings. The breeding population varied (2.7,5.3 pairs/km2), but showed no significant trend with time. The population increased in years with high spring flooding levels. Population size was unrelated to demographic factors (e.g. hatching success the previous year (14,50%), and return rate). Lapwings moved considerably between years and their nest site fidelity was unrelated to previous hatching success or other factors, suggesting that changes in habitat quality and migration between populations were important in regulating population size. Recent extensive meadow restoration did not seem to aid the Northern Lapwing population; birds continued nesting on tillage even though most nests were destroyed by farming activities. A relatively high relaying frequency improved hatching success, which was still lowest in the most preferred habitats (spring sown crops, total hatching success c. 30%). The few Northern Lapwings breeding in the least preferred habitats (meadows and cultivated grassland) had a better hatching success (> 70% total hatching success), suggesting that habitat selection was not determined by hatching success. From these results, recommendations are made for the management of Northern Lapwing (and associated species) populations on farmland. [source]


Using NIC to Describe the Role of the Nurse Practitioner

PURPOSE To have nurse practitioners (NPs) identify the 20 most prevalent NIC interventions describing their nursing practice; to determine if the NIC is applicable to the NP role. METHODS The study used a descriptive survey design. NPs with prescriptive privileges in the state of Minnesota received a cover letter and survey that included a description of NIC and a list of the 486 intervention labels and their definitions from the NIC (3rd ed.). Each participant was asked to identify all interventions performed at least once per month in their practice and to provide basic demographic data, including identification of NP specialty. FINDINGS A total of 1,190 surveys were mailed with a return rate of 37%. NPs' average age was 45 years; the average number of years of NP practice was 9. Employment in a clinic represented the work setting of 72% of respondents followed by hospital practice (11%) and long-term care (10%). Specialty (certified) areas were family practice (27%), pediatrics (21%), adult (19%), women's health (16%), geriatrics (11%), psychiatric (5%), and oncology (1%). The educational level was primarily master's degree (73%). NPs identified an average of 120 interventions they performed at least once per month. These interventions reflected areas of patient education and support, as well as documentation and physician collaboration. The 20 most frequently selected interventions were reported by 71%, 90% of respondents. Four core interventions ,"documentation,""telephone consultation,""teaching: prescribed medication," and "emotional support", were used at least once per month by all specialties. DISCUSSION The level of consistency (70%) among responses validates the strong foundation that professional nursing, as described by NIC, provides NPs in their role. Four core interventions and the remaining 16 most frequently selected interventions that are more specific to each specialty practice indicates that NIC is comprehensive enough to meet the needs of a variety of NP practices. CONCLUSIONS NIC encompasses key areas of interventions (health screening, treatment and management, health promotion and education, psychosocial support, indirect activities) central to the role of NPs, but qualitative comments described the need for more language within NIC to characterize the NP role related to the prescribing of medications and treatments. Some respondents found the definitions to be unclear as to whether they were performing or ordering/prescribing the intervention. This lack of clarity could be addressed by further development of the NIC definitions and activities so the advanced role of the NP is more fully described. Development of documentation systems using the core interventions identified by the various NP specialties is needed. Using standardized nursing language for documentation will enable NPs to build clinical databases that reflect and describe the role. Future research needs to be focused by NP specialty and to go beyond the NIC definition and include analysis at the activity level. [source]


Children's prescription medicines: parents' perceptions on dosing intervals, dosing devices and prescription advice

Objective To gather information on devices used to administer liquid medicines, dosing intervals for antibiotic administration, and parents' perceptions of the advice received from pharmacists about prescription medicines, for children up to the age of six years. Setting Six schools from different socio-economic areas were selected within the Auckland area of New Zealand. To facilitate distribution and collection of questionnaires, the headmaster or a teacher was known to the researchers. Method An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to year 1 and 2 students (aged five and six years) to take home for completion by a parent or primary caregiver. Respondents were asked to refer to their youngest child and/or to the last time they had given medicines or received a prescription for a child. Key findings A total of 299 completed questionnaires were received (48.2%); 60 questionnaires had not been distributed by school teachers in error, and the overall return rate was thus adjusted to 53.4%. The device used most frequently to administer medicines to younger children up to the age of three years was an oral medicine syringe, while nearly one-third of children aged three to six years received medicine in a ,teaspoon'. Almost half the respondents (48.8%) indicated they would be most likely to forget the midday dose of antibiotics, and dosing deviated from recommended intervals. Most respondents had received advice from a pharmacist on how to take the medicine, and had understood instructions and had the opportunity to ask questions. Conclusion This study highlights areas that pharmacists can include when advising parents and guardians about children's medicines, such as ideal dosing intervals of antibiotics and the use of accurate dosing devices. Optimal manufacturer's pricing and lot-sizing policies under trade credit financing

Abstract In this paper, we extend Goyal's economic order quantity (EOQ) model to allow for the following four important facts: (1) the manufacturer's selling price per unit is necessarily higher than its unit cost, (2) the interest rate charged by a bank is not necessarily higher than the manufacturer's investment return rate, (3) the demand rate is a downward-sloping function of the price, and (4) an economic production quantity (EPQ) model is a generalized EOQ model. We then establish an appropriate EPQ model accordingly, in which the manufacturer receives the supplier trade credit and provides the customer trade credit simultaneously. As a result, the proposed model is in a general framework that includes numerous previous models as special cases. Furthermore, we provide an easy-to-use closed-form optimal solution to the problem for any given price. Finally, we develop an algorithm for the manufacturer to determine its optimal price and lot size simultaneously. [source]


Time-to-market, window of opportunity, and salvageability of a new product development

The time-to-market in the presence of a window of opportunity is analyzed using ;a probabilistic model, i.e. a model where the completion time of new product development is a random variable characterized by a gamma distribution. Two cases are considered: the first, a case where the discounted return-on-investment exceeds the return expected from a conservative investment,e.g. investment in bonds,termed ,the profitable case'; and the second, a case where the discounted return-on-investment just balances the cost of new product development, termed ,the salvageable case'. The model constructed is focused on the financial aspects of new product development. It allows a decision-maker to monitor, as well as terminate, a project based on its expected value (at any time prior to completion) by computing the mean time-to-market that provides profit, investment salvage, or loss. The mean time-to-market computed by the model may be compared with that estimated by the technology development team for decision-making purposes. Finally, in the presence of a window of opportunity and for the specific cases analyzed, we recommend to always keep the expenditure rate lower than the expected return rate. Thoracic epidural anaesthesia and analgesia: United Kingdom practice

Background: Thoracic epidural analgesia has become increasingly practised in recent years. Complications are rare but potentially serious and, consequently, careful evaluation is required before undertaking this technique. The practice surrounding this procedure varies widely amongst anaesthetists. Methods: A postal survey to examine the practice of thoracic epidural analgesia was sent to all Royal College of Anaesthetists tutors in the United Kingdom. Results: Responses were received from 240 tutors, representing a return rate of 83%. When obtaining consent for thoracic epidural cannulation, 42% of respondents mentioned risk of a dural tap complication and 11% mentioned neurological damage. Fifty percent of respondents performed epidural cannulation following induction of general anaesthesia. The practice of epidural insertion in patients with abnormal coagulation varied, although over 80% of respondents did not consider concurrent treatment with either aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs a contraindication. Sterile precautions for epidural insertion also varied between anaesthetists. Postoperatively, 95% of respondents used an opioid-based bupivacaine solution for epidural infusions, and these were most commonly nursed on general surgical wards (63%). Seventy-eight percent of hospitals provided an acute pain team to review epidural analgesia. Conclusion: In the United Kingdom, there is little consensus in the practice of thoracic epidural analgesia relating to the issues of informed consent, epidural cannulation in patients with deranged clotting and the sterile precautions taken prior to performing epidural insertion. Most respondents use an opioid-based bupivacaine solution to provide postoperative epidural analgesia. Most hospitals in the UK now provide an acute pain service for thoracic epidural follow-up. Candidate's Thesis: Universal Newborn Hearing Screening in an Inner-City, Managed Care Environment ,

Abstract Objectives/Hypothesis Universal neonatal hearing screening (UNHS) programs aim to identify and treat educationally significant hearing loss in the first months of life. Several states have mandated UNHS for all newborns. Such programs have been successful in small, homogeneous populations. As larger states attempt to implement such programs, important obstacles have arisen, particularly in sparsely populated rural environments and in the inner city, where poverty, unstable living situations, and inadequate access to health care make follow-up of infants failing initial testing difficult. Study Design We performed a prospective longitudinal study e-amining the effects of increasingly comple- and e-pensive interventions designed to ensure that children failing initial hearing screening returned for complete evaluation and habilitation. Methods A UNHS program based on transient evoked otoacoustic emissions testing was implemented at Temple University Hospital, with 2,000 births per year. At 6 months into the program, efficacy was assessed and modifications in follow-up methodology were made in an attempt to improved rate of return of infants failing newborn screening. The effect of these interventions was reassessed 6 months later. Results In its first 12 months, the Temple University Infant and Young Child Hearing Intervention Initiative successfully screened 95% (2,031) of all newborns using transient evoked otoacoustic emissions. Collecting a complete database profile for each newborn, establishing rapport with the family, and offering immediate follow-up appointments yielded a 61% return rate after discharge. The addition of a dedicated project secretary, free day-care for siblings, and cab vouchers for transportation and the elimination of a requirement for health maintenance organization referrals increased follow-up yield to 75%. Conclusion Given adequate resources and planning, UNHS can be successful, even in economically depressed environments. [source]


An optimal investment and consumption model with stochastic returns

Abstract We consider a financial market consisting of a risky asset and a riskless one, with a constant or random investment horizon. The interest rate from the riskless asset is constant, but the relative return rate from the risky asset is stochastic with an unknown parameter in its distribution. Following the Bayesian approach, the optimal investment and consumption problem is formulated as a Markov decision process. We incorporate the concept of risk aversion into the model and characterize the optimal strategies for both the power and logarithmic utility functions with a constant relative risk aversion (CRRA). Numerical examples are provided that support the intuition that a higher proportion of investment should be allocated to the risky asset if the mean return rate on the risky asset is higher or the risky asset return rate is less volatile. How has the remnant population of the threatened frog Leiopelma pakeka (Anura: Leiopelmatidae) fared on Maud Island, New Zealand, over the past 25 years?

Abstract Despite widespread global reports of declining amphibian populations, supporting long-term census data are few, limiting opportunities to study changes in numbers and survival over time. However, in New Zealand, for the past 25 years (1983,2008), we studied Leiopelma pakeka, a threatened, terrestrial frog that inhabits rocky boulder banks under forest on Maud Island. Using night sampling at least annually on two 12 × 12 m plots, we had 5390 captures of 1000+ individuals, 327 on one plot (grid 1), 751 on the other (grid 2). The mean (±SE) number of frogs found per night was 11.3 (±0.6) on grid 1 and 25.6 (±1.4) on grid 2. We used capture-recapture models to estimate population size, proportion of animals remaining beneath the surface and survival rate. The mean (±SE) population estimate was 131 (±14.7) frogs on grid 1 and 367 (±38.7) on grid 2. Over 25 years the estimated population increased on grid 1 and fluctuated on grid 2. Some frogs were captured on most sampling visits, others less often, evidently failing to emerge from cover each visit. Using a combination of open and closed population models, we estimated the mean (±SE) proportion remaining underground was 0.63 (±0.12) on grid 1 and 0.53 (±0.07) on grid 2. Our research represents one of the longest-run population studies of any frog, and we recorded significant longevity, two males reaching 35+ and 37+ years, a female 34+ years. No significant differences occurred between mean annual survival rates of apparent females and males, or between the two sites. The number of toes clipped for individual identification had little influence on the return rate, once the effect of time of first capture was removed. [source]

Increased risk of citrate reactions in patients with multiple myeloma during peripheral blood stem cell leukapheresis

Abstract The citrate based anticoagulant ACD is commonly used in apheresis procedures. Due to its ability to decrease ionized calcium, citrate may cause unpleasant symptoms, such as paresthesias and muscle cramps, in patients undergoing therapeutic and donor apheresis. We noticed that patients with multiple myeloma (MM) undergoing autologous stem cell leukapheresis appeared to have more citrate reactions when compared to other patients undergoing the same procedure. A retrospective chart review was performed to evaluate 139 (of 151) consecutive patients with MM, amyloidosis, hematological and solid malignancies who had autologous peripheral blood stem cell collection between January 2007 and February 2008. Citrate reactions, ranging from mild (e.g., perioral tingling and parasthesias) to severe (e.g., nausea/vomiting and muscle cramps) were noted for 35 patients. Twenty-three of 63 patients with MM had documented citrate reactions, which was significantly higher than those with other hematological and solid malignancies (37% vs. 20%; P < 0.05, Relative Risk (RR) = 1.9). The severities of citrate reactions were the same in both groups; approximately 50% of patients in each group received i.v. calcium gluconate for treatment of hypocalcemia. No correlation between bisphosphonate therapy and citrate reactions were noted in our study group. Examination of available laboratory values related to calcium homeostasis, liver, and renal function failed to reveal a mechanism for the increase in citrate reactions observed. In summary, this single institution retrospective study indicates that patients with MM are more sensitive to citrate-induced hypocalcemia during leukapheresis when compared to patients with other hematological and solid malignancies. Strategies for decreasing citrate reactions (e.g., supplemental calcium and slowing return rates) should be considered for patient safety and comfort, especially in the MM population, on a prophylactic rather than reactive basis. Pollination by deceit in Paphiopedilum barbigerum (Orchidaceae): a staminode exploits the innate colour preferences of hoverflies (Syrphidae)

Abstract Paphiopedilum barbigerum T. Tang et F. T. Wang, a slipper orchid native to southwest China and northern Vietnam, produces deceptive flowers that are self-compatible but incapable of mechanical self-pollination (autogamy). The flowers are visited by females of Allograpta javana and Episyrphus balteatus (Syrphidae) that disperse the orchid's massulate pollen onto the receptive stigmas. Measurements of insect bodies and floral architecture show that the physical dimensions of these two fly species correlate with the relative positions of the receptive stigma and dehiscent anthers of P. barbigerum. These hoverflies land on the slippery centralised wart located on the shiny yellow staminode and then fall backwards through the labellum entrance. They are temporarily trapped in the inflated chamber composed of the interconnected labellum and column. The attractive staminode of P. barbigerum strongly reflects the colour yellow (500,560 nm), a colour preferred innately by most pollen-eating members of the Syrphidae. No scent molecules were detected using GC mass spectrometry analysis, showing that the primary attractant in this system is visual, not olfactory. Pollination-by-deceit in P. barbigerum is contrasted with its congener, P. dianthum, a brood site mimic that is pollinated by ovipositing females of E. balteatus. As the natural rate of fruit set in P. barbigerum (mean 26.3% pooled over three seasons) is lower than that of P. dianthum (mean 58.5% over two seasons), the evolution of false brood sites in some Paphiopedilum spp. should be selectively advantageous as they may provide an increase in the attention and return rates of dependable pollinators to flowers that always lack a reward.
