Selected AbstractsCardiopulmonary resuscitation training for undergraduate medical students: a five-year studyMEDICAL EDUCATION, Issue 3 2002Colin A Graham Background Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for undergraduate medical students and junior doctors has been noted to be poor in the past. Attempts have been made over the last decade to improve CPR training for all health professionals. Aim This study aimed to determine if CPR training for undergraduate medical students in a single institution improved after initial concerns in 1992, and to observe trends in CPR training over five years. Methods Prospective single centre observational cohort survey by means of a 2-page self completed questionnaire to final year undergraduate medical students at the University of Glasgow (1993,97 inclusive). Results Mean annual response rate 58% (range 48% , 67%). 99% of responders had been trained in basic life support during undergraduate training. The use of simulated arrests for training increased significantly. CPR training was concentrated in the first and final years. Training in all aspects of advanced life support increased, as did the students' confidence in these techniques. Student satisfaction with the amount of basic life support training increased very significantly and there was a small, but significant increase in student satisfaction with advanced life support training. Overall confidence at the prospect of being a member of the resuscitation team on qualification did not increase. Conclusions There has been a sustained improvement in CPR training at this institution since 1993. Improvements in the training of specific advanced life support techniques does not lead to improved overall confidence in using these skills on qualification. Advanced life support training requires further expansion. [source] Teamwork and patient safety in dynamic domains of healthcare: a review of the literatureACTA ANAESTHESIOLOGICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 2 2009T. MANSER Aims/Background: This review examines current research on teamwork in highly dynamic domains of healthcare such as operating rooms, intensive care, emergency medicine, or trauma and resuscitation teams with a focus on aspects relevant to the quality and safety of patient care. Results: Evidence from three main areas of research supports the relationship between teamwork and patient safety: (1) Studies investigating the factors contributing to critical incidents and adverse events have shown that teamwork plays an important role in the causation and prevention of adverse events. (2) Research focusing on healthcare providers' perceptions of teamwork demonstrated that (a) staff's perceptions of teamwork and attitudes toward safety-relevant team behavior were related to the quality and safety of patient care and (b) perceptions of teamwork and leadership style are associated with staff well-being, which may impact clinician' ability to provide safe patient care. (3) Observational studies on teamwork behaviors related to high clinical performance have identified patterns of communication, coordination, and leadership that support effective teamwork. Conclusion: In recent years, research using diverse methodological approaches has led to significant progress in team research in healthcare. The challenge for future research is to further develop and validate instruments for team performance assessment and to develop sound theoretical models of team performance in dynamic medical domains integrating evidence from all three areas of team research identified in this review. This will help to improve team training efforts and aid the design of clinical work systems supporting effective teamwork and safe patient care. [source] Preparing teams for low-frequency emergencies in Norwegian hospitalsACTA ANAESTHESIOLOGICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 10 2003T. Wisborg Background:, Medical emergencies and major trauma require optimal team function. Leadership, co-operation and communication are the most essential issues. Due to low caseloads such emergencies occur rarely in most Norwegian hospitals. Team training of personnel between real emergencies is expected to improve performance in comparable settings. Most hospitals have cardiac arrest teams, but it is known that the training of such multiprofessional teams varies widely. We wanted to know if this also was the case for trauma teams and resuscitation teams for newborns. Methods:, A telephone survey of training practices in all the Norwegian hospitals with acute cover was conducted in 2002. Information was obtained on whether trauma teams and neonatal resuscitation teams had participated in practical multiprofessional training during the previous 6 or 12 months. Results:, Information was obtained from all 50 hospitals. Of the acute care hospitals, 30% had trained their trauma teams during the previous 6 months, and an additional 18% when considering the previous year, while 38% of neonatal wards had multiprofessional training during the previous 6 months, and additionally 13% had had training during the previous year. Additionally four neonatal wards had had regular training of nurses only. More than 80% of all respondents judged regular team training to be achievable, and none considered this training impossible. Conclusion:, Only half the Norwegian acute care hospitals reported at least yearly training of trauma and neonatal resuscitation teams. Regular team training represents an underused potential to improve handling of low-frequency emergencies. [source] |
