Bayesian estimation of traffic lane state

Abstract Modelling of large transportation systems requires a reliable description of its elements that can be easily adapted to the specific situation. This paper offers mixture model as a flexible candidate for modelling of such element. The mixture model describes particular and possibly very different states of a specific system by its individual components. A hierarchical model built on such elements can describe complexes of big city communications as well as railway or highway networks. Bayesian paradigm is adopted for estimation of parameters and the actual component label of the mixture model as it serves well for the subsequent decision making. As a straightforward application of Bayesian method to mixture models leads to infeasible computations, an approximation is applied. For normal stochastic variations, the resulting estimation algorithm reduces to a simple recursive weighted least squares. The elementary modelling is demonstrated on a model of traffic flow state in a single point of a roadway. The examples for simulated as well as real data show excellent properties of the suggested model. They represent much wider set of extensive tests made. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Electronic structure of BaFe2As2 as obtained from DFT/ASW first-principles calculations

We use ab-initio calculations based on the augmented spherical wave method within density functional theory to study the magnetic ordering and Fermi surface of BaFe2As2, the parent compound of the hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors (K,Ba)Fe2As2, for the tetragonal I4/mmm as well as the orthorhombic Fmmm structure. In comparison to full potential linear augmented plane wave calculations, we obtain significantly smaller magnetic energies. This finding is remarkable, since the augmented spherical wave method, in general, is known for a most reliable description of magnetism. [source]


Mass Transport in Multilayer Porous Metallic Membranes , Diagnosis, Identification and Validation

Abstract For a reliable description of mass transfer in membrane reactors the multilayer structure of the membrane is essential. This paper discusses methods which are sufficient to distinguish between homogeneous and composite membranes, and some others which are not. Different mass transport experiments (single gas permeation, isobaric diffusion, transient diffusion) with a porous metallic membrane consisting of two layers and the dusty gas model were used for this purpose. Simultaneous identification of mass transport parameters of both layers was achieved by modern optimization techniques on single gas permeation data. These parameters were validated by isobaric or transient diffusion measurements. [source]


Supershells in deformed harmonic oscillators and atomic clusters

Abstract From the mathematical point of view, the appearance of supershells is a general feature of potentials having relatively sharp edges. In physics, supershells have been observed in systems of metal clusters, which are also known to exhibit an underlying shell structure with magic numbers intermediate between the magic numbers of the 3-D isotropic harmonic oscillator and those of the 3-D square well. In the present study, Nilsson's modified harmonic oscillator (without any spin,orbit interaction), as well as the 3-D q -deformed harmonic oscillator with uq(3) , soq(3) symmetry, are considered. The former model has been used for an early schematic description of shell structure in metal clusters, while the latter has been found to successfully reproduce the magic numbers of metal clusters up to 1500 atoms, the expected limit of validity for theories based on the filling of electronic shells. The systematics of the appearance of supershells in the two models will be considered, putting emphasis on the differences between the spectra of the two oscillators. While the validity of Nilsson's modified harmonic oscillator framework is limited to relatively low particle numbers, the 3-D q -deformed harmonic oscillator gives reliable descriptions of the first supershell in metal clusters, which lies within its region of validity. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. THE RELIABILITY OF NAÏVE ASSESSORS IN SENSORY EVALUATION VISUALIZED BY PRAGMATICAL MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS

The first part of this paper demonstrates a simple graphical way to visualize estimated variances, in terms of a plot of the total initial variance ("SIGNAL") versus residual variance ("NOISE"), as a pragmatic alternative to tables of F-tests. The recently developed Procrustes rotation in the bilinear "jack-knifing" form is then presented as a method for simplifying the comparison of PLS Regression models from different data sets. These methods are applied to sensory data in order to study if naïve (untrained) sensory panelists can produce reliable descriptions of systematic differences between various test meals. The results confirm that three panels of 15 naïve assessors each could give repeatable intersubjective description of the most dominant sensory variation dimensions. [source]
