Relative abundance of males to females affects behaviour, condition and immune function in a captive population of dark-eyed juncos Junco hyemalis

Relative numbers of males and females in breeding groups may vary from expected values owing to a variety of factors. To determine how sex ratio might influence individual phenotypes in a captive population of dark-eyed juncos Junco hyemalis during the breeding season, we established three treatment groups: a male-biased (2:1), equal (1:1), and female-biased group (1:2). Within-group density (birds/m2) was constant across groups. We assessed the frequency of flight chases (a proxy for social instability), measured changes in body mass and pectoral muscle condition, assayed plasma levels of testosterone (T) and compared cell-mediated immunity of individuals. We found significantly more chases in the male-biased group than in the female-biased group. Birds in the male-biased group lost more mass and displayed poorer pectoral-muscle condition than birds in the equal group. Cell-mediated immune responses were reduced in individuals in the male-biased group in comparison to the female-biased group. Plasma T levels in both sexes did not vary with sex ratio. Collectively, these results suggest that during the breeding season, social instability is greater in male-biased populations, and instability may lead to decreased general health and vigour. Mesencephalic human neural progenitor cells transplanted into the neonatal hemiparkinsonian rat striatum differentiate into neurons and improve motor behaviour

Abstract Neural stem cell transplantation is a promising strategy for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. To evaluate the differentiation potential of human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) as a prerequisite for clinical trials, we intracerebrally transplanted in vitro expanded fetal mesencephalic hNPCs into hemiparkinsonian rats. On postnatal day one (P1), 17 animals underwent a unilateral intraventricular 6-hydroxydopamine injection into the right lateral ventricle. At P3, animals (n = 10) received about 100 000 hNPCs (1 µL) in the right striatum. Five weeks after birth, animals underwent behaviour tests prior to fixation, followed by immunohistochemistry on brain slices for human nuclei, glial fibrillary acidic protein, S100,, neuronal nuclei antigen, neuron-specific enolase and tyrosine hydroxylase. Compared with the apomorphine-induced rotations in the lesioned-only group (7.4 ± 0.5 min,1), lesioned and successfully transplanted animals (0.3 ± 0.1 min,1) showed a significant therapeutic improvement. Additionally, in the cylinder test, the lesioned-only animals preferred to use the ipsilateral forepaw. Conversely, the lesioned and transplanted animals showed no significant side bias similar to untreated control animals. Transplanted human nuclei-immunoreactive cells were found to survive and migrate up to 2000 µm into the host parenchyma, many containing the pan-neuronal markers neuronal nuclei antigen and neuron-specific enolase. In the striatum, tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive somata were also found, indicating a dopaminergic differentiation capacity of transplanted hNPCs in vivo. However, the relative number of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive neurons in vivo seemed to be lower than in corresponding in vitro differentiation. To minimize donor tissue necessary for transplantation, further investigations will aim to enhance dopaminergic differentiation of transplanted cells in vivo. [source]


Electron microscopy of DNA replication in 3-D: Evidence for similar-sized replication foci throughout S-phase,

Abstract DNA replication sites (RS) in synchronized HeLa cells have been studied at the electron microscopic level. Using an improved method for detection following the in vivo incorporation of biotin-16-deoxyuridine triphosphate, discrete RS, or foci are observed throughout the S-phase. In particular, the much larger RS or foci typically observed by fluorescence microscopic approaches in mid- and late-S-phase, are found to be composed of smaller discrete foci that are virtually identical in size to the RS observed in early-S-phase. Pulse-chase experiments demonstrate that the RS of early-S-phase are maintained when chased through S-phase and into the next cell generation. Stereologic analysis demonstrates that the relative number of smaller sized foci present at a given time remains constant from early through mid-S-phase with only a slight decrease in late-S-phase. 3-D reconstruction of serial sections reveals a network-like organization of the RS in early-S-phase and confirms that numerous smaller-sized replication foci comprise the larger RS characteristic of late-S-phase. © 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Overt and covert aggression in work settings in relation to the subjective well-being of employees

Abstract Aggressive behavior was studied in workplaces having (1) predominantly male, (2) predominantly female, or (3) both male and female employees in equal or near equal frequencies. In addition to examining the occurrence of different types of aggression in these workplaces, the question of whether being a target of aggression is related to employees' subjective well-being was addressed. One hundred sixty-nine participants (mainly 30,50 years of age) employed in a wide range of organizations in the public sector completed a questionnaire measuring four types of observed and experienced aggression: direct overt, indirect manipulative, covert insinuative, and rational-appearing aggression. Indirect manipulative and rational-appearing aggression were perceived to be the most widely used aggression styles in the work context. In the predominantly male workplaces, the men were perceived to use more of all types of aggression than in the predominantly female workplaces. The women's aggression was not related to the relative number of females and males with whom they worked. Participants were divided into two groups on the basis of the extent to which they estimated themselves to be targets of workplace aggression. Those who considered themselves to be victims of workplace aggression suffered significantly more from psychosocial problems and physical symptoms than those who had been victimized to a lesser extent or not at all. Changes of taxonomic and trophic structure of fish assemblages along an environmental gradient in the Upper Beni watershed (Bolivia)

The distribution and the diet of 28 fish species were evaluated, during the dry season, in 12 streams of the Upper Beni watershed (Amazon basin, Bolivia). The 12 streams were of similar size (stream width and water depth) but situated on a gradient of altitude in the Andean and sub-Andean areas. The environmental conditions in the stream changed in relation to the altitude. As altitude decreased, slope and water velocity also decreased, while temperature, conductivity, pH and the proportion of pools increased. Although the diets of the species were mainly based on two aquatic autochthonous food resources, invertebrates and sediment, species were classified into five trophic guilds: detritivores, algivores, piscivores, invertivores-omnivores and aquatic specialist invertivores. In all streams invertivores dominated or co-dominated with detritivores. The trophic structure of the assemblages, however, changed in relation to the environmental gradient. The fish species richness increased and the trophic composition became more diverse at lower altitudes, when slope decreased and temperature increased. At the same time, the relative number of invertivore species decreased, whereas the relative number of detritivore, algivore and piscivore species increased. Decreasing altitude appeared to play a role similar to increasing stream size along the longitudinal gradient. This could be explained by geomorphological and temperature variations that may generate environmental conditions favourable to an increase of productivity. [source]


Potential of a synthetic aggregation pheromone for integrated pest management of Colorado potato beetle

Abstract 1The relative number of colonizing adult Colorado potato beetles (CPB) Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) coming to pitfall traps baited with the aggregation pheromone (S)-3,7-dimethyl-2-oxo-oct-6-ene-1,3-diol [(S)-CPB I] and the use of the pheromone in a trap crop pest management strategy were evaluated in the field for the first time. 2More than five-fold more adult L. decemlineata were caught in pitfall traps baited with the pheromone compared with controls. However, attraction to the pheromone diminished after 5 days in the field. 3In the trap crop management strategy, more colonizing adults were present in pheromone-treated rows of potatoes compared with untreated middle rows. 4Significantly fewer L. decemlineata egg masses and larvae were found in potato plots that were bordered by pheromone-treated rows, or bordered by imidacloprid + pheromone-treated rows, or rows treated at-planting with imidacloprid compared with untreated (control) potato plots. 5Densities of L. decemlineata egg masses and larvae and percentage defoliation were significantly lower, and marketable tuber yield significantly higher, in conventional imidacloprid-treated potatoes compared with all other treatments. 6Although our results demonstrate the potential for use of the aggregation pheromone in the management of L. decemlineata in the field, more research is needed to optimize the release rates of the attractant and incorporate control methods for cohabiting pests. 5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Based Photodynamic Therapy in Leukemia Cell HL60,

ABSTRACT A study to explore the optimal experimental parameters and the photosensitization of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-based photodynamic therapy (PDT) in promyelocytic leukemia cell HL60 has been conducted, in which HL60 cells and their control groups, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC), first are incubated with different concentrations of ALA in dark for different periods of time and then followed by irradiating with different wavebands for different fluences. Fluorescence microscope and spectrofluorometer have been used to detect the fluorescence of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) endogenously produced by ALA. The response of the cells to ALA-PDT was evaluated by the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2-5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay (interval between irradiation and the MTT assay is 24 h) and by flow cytometry (the length of time between irradiation and the flow assay is 30 min). MTT results will reflect the relative number of metabolically active mitochondria in the population. Propidium iodide uptake in flow cytometry will test for membrane damage. The results of parameter experiments were obtained: 1 × 105/mL HL60 cell was first incubated with 1 mmol/L ALA in dark for 4 h and the maximum fluorescence of PpIX level appeared; then irradiated with 410 nm (4 mW/cm2) for 14.4 J/cm2 and maximum photodamage to membrane and mitochondrial function of HL60 cell resulted. With the normal granulocytes, such response was not detected. Therefore a hypothetical idea can be brought forward that ALA-based PDT can be used for inactivation of leukemia cell HL60 and these optimal parameters may be useful for clinical application. Abstract The chemistry of energetic materials can be described applying acid-base reaction formalism. Addressing the HSAB concept, the number of electrons transferred, ,N, in an acid-base reaction, allows for description and prediction of properties of composite and homogeneous materials. At first ,N helps in estimating the rate of reaction of binary systems with either given fuel or oxidizer. Nevertheless ,N is only a relative number thus the range of comparability remains narrow. At second ,N can be used as a measure for the sensitivity of homogeneous explosives. The increased reactivity of hypothetical fragments to recombine in a reaction such as R3C.+.NO2=R3C,NO2 given by ,N correlates very well with experimentally determined reduced impact sensitivity of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene compounds. On the contrary the rising impact sensitivity of metal azides correlates with rising values of ,N of Mn+/N3, reaction because increased reactivity, that is increased electron transfer from the azide anion to the metal cation triggers formation of the azide radical (.N3). The latter then decomposes rapidly to give dinitrogen. This increased reactivity/sensitivity of metral azides coincides with covalent bonding whereas ionic azides are relatively insensitive. Dynamic Newton,gradient-direction-type algorithm for multilayer structure determination using grazing X-ray specular scattering: numerical simulation and analysis

A new dynamic iterative algorithm code for retrieving macroscopic multilayer structure parameters (the layer thickness and complex refraction index for each layer, the surface roughness and the interface roughness between the layers) from specular scattering angular scan data is proposed. The use of conventional direct methods, particularly the well known Newton algorithm and gradient-direction-type algorithm operating dynamically to minimize the error functional in a least-squares fashion, is explored. Such an approach works well and seems to be effective in solving the inverse problem in the high-resolution X-ray reflectometry (HRXR) method. In order to demonstrate some features of the proposed iterative algorithm, numerical calculations for retrieving three-layer structure parameters are carried out using simulated HRXR angular scan data. The calculations indicate clearly that the dynamic iterative algorithm is convergent and capable of yielding the true solution. It is important that the performance coefficient for successful iterative cycles for the absolute minimization of the HRXR error functional is quite high even if the initial values of the search parameters are chosen rather far from the true values. It is particularly noteworthy that the relative number of successful iterative cycles is of the order of 90,40% when only moderately accurate initial parameter values, varying by ±10,40% from the true values, are presumed. Optimal foraging online: Increasing sensitivity to delay

This experiment is a replication and extension of the Rajala and Hantula (2000) study of sensitivity to feedback delay while shopping in a simulated Internet mall. The experiment consisted of three conditions: One group had an ascending clock placed on the computer screen to cue the passage of time, another group had a descending clock placed on the computer screen, and as a control and replication condition, another group had no clock on the computer screen. Participants were more sensitive to the delays in the various stores in the cybermall when an ascending clock was present on the screen. A hyperbolic discount function fit best described the number of entries into each store, amount of time spent in each store, and relative number of purchases in each store. A customer-satisfaction survey showed decreasing positive attitudes toward the stores as a function of delay. These results have implications both in terms of foraging theory applied to human behavior, as well as for the practice of online marketing. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]

Economists researching the area of optimal protection have tended to analyse the ranking of alternative policy tools in the presence of perfect competition, either when the government in an importing country achieves a non-economic target, or when there is a market distortion. Assuming international oligopolistic competition, I reconsider the choice of optimal policy instruments, i.e. an import tariff and a production subsidy. I show that the choice of optimal policy instruments depends on the relative number of home firms and foreign ones and on the magnitude of international cost differences. Immunohistochemistry of Pancreatic Development in Cattle and Pig

Summary With 8 figures and 2 tables The aim of this study was to characterize bovine and porcine pancreatic development by immunohistochemistry. In the pig, staining for both glucagon and insulin was noted at day 19. In cattle, glucagon staining was observed at day 25 and insulin staining from day 26. In both species, glucagon-stained cells were abundant initially, but later insulin-stained cells became most abundant. A few cells displayed co-localization of glucagon and insulin staining during initial development in both species. Initially, most of the cells of the pancreatic primordia and the duodenal epithelium displayed Pdx-1-staining. All insulin-stained cells displayed Pdx-1-stained nuclei, whereas no glucagon-stained cells did so. Many Pdx-1-stained cells lacked insulin staining, but with development, the relative number of these cells diminished. Nkx6.1-staining was initially seen in a pattern similar to that for Pdx-1, but was lacking duodenal staining. Subsequently, the number of Nkx6.1-stained cells diminished, but increased again to a level where practically all insulin-stained cells also presented Nkx6.1-staining. Glucagon-stained cells, on the other hand, never had Nkx6.1 staining. In conclusion, the localization of the two transcription factors, Pdx-1 and Nkx6.1, demonstrated that pancreas development appears to be controlled by mechanisms comparable with those operating in humans. Some Segmental Features on the Structure of the Aortic Wall of the Dog

Summary Structural features of segmental parts of the aorta of the dog were studied by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The variability in the wall architecture composition and vascular thickness of the ascending (T2-3 level), thoracic (T7-8 level) and abdominal (L6-7 infrarenal level) segments of the aorta was analysed. Morphological features such as presence of intimal folds, pattern of the medial myoconnective components with segmental variations in the number of elastic lamellae, whose relative number was higher in the thoracic aorta (ascending and descending parts), compared with the abdominal aorta, and a network of connective (stromal) elements formed by elastic and collagen lamellae and fibres in the adventitia were observed. The results were discussed on a histophysiological basis, because small but significant segmental differences had been characterized in the aortic wall structure of the dog. [source]


Development of germ cells and reproductive biology in the sipunculid Phascolosoma esculenta

Abstract Sipuncula are of increasing interest for fisheries and aquaculture in China. Sustainable harvests will rely on a better knowledge of reproductive characteristics and stock enhancement. Here, we investigated the structural characteristics of and seasonal changes in germ cell development of the sipunculid Phascolosoma esculenta from the south-eastern coast of Zhejiang, China. An annual survey of egg numbers in the coelom (body cavity) fluid by light and electron microscopy of the females indicates that P. esculenta is dioecious. No defined gonad but dissociated germ cells were found in the coelomic cavity during the 1-year observation. The germ cells showed multiplication and development in the coelomic cavity. Reproduction took place from May to September, with a peak in July and August. The oogenesis can be divided into four phases: cell proliferation, pre-vitellogenesis, vitellogenesis and egg envelope formation and maturation. The process of spermatogenesis can also be divided into four phases: cell multiplication, cell growth, cell maturation and metamorphosis. Monthly changes in the relative number of eggs in each stage indicate that P. esculenta lays eggs in batches. The sperm thrives in the coelomic fluid in the form of cell groups with patterns of genesis and release similar to those of the eggs. Eggs of P. esculenta were fertilized only when reaching the nephridium. The sex ratio was about 1:1 throughout the year. [source]


Correlation between molecular structures and relative electrophoretic mobility in capillary electrophoresis: Alkylpyridines

Abstract The quantitative relationship between relative electrophoretic mobility in capillary electrophoresis for a series of 31 closely related alkylpyridines and their molecular structures was studied by using CODESSA. According to the t -test on the results, we found that the three most important descriptors affecting the mobility are the relative number of rings (NR), Min e-n attraction for a C,-N bond (MEN) and average complementary information index (ACIC). With these structure descriptors a good three-parameter linear model was developed to correlate the mobility of these compounds with their structures. This model can not only correctly predict the migration behavior of these compounds, but also find the structural factors which are responsible for the migration behavior of these compounds, thus can help to explain the separation mechanism of these compounds. The method used in this work can also be extended to the mobility-structure relationship research of other compounds. [source]


Influences of the vegetation mosaic on riparian and stream environments in a mixed forest-grassland landscape in "Mediterranean" northwestern California

We examined differences in riparian and aquatic environments within the three dominant vegetation patch types of the Mattole River watershed, a 789-km2 mixed conifer-deciduous (hardwood) forest and grassland-dominated landscape in northwestern California, USA. Riparian and aquatic environments, and particularly microclimates therein, influence the distributions of many vertebrate species, particularly the physiologically-restricted ectotherms , reptiles and amphibians (herpetofauna), and fishes. In addition to being a significant portion of the native biodiversity of a landscape, the presence and relative numbers of these more tractable small vertebrates can serve as useful metrics of its "ecological health." Our primary objective was to determine the range of available riparian and aquatic microclimatic regimes, and discern how these regimes relate to the dominant vegetations that comprise the landscape mosaic. A second objective, reported in a companion paper, was to examine relationships between available microclimatic regimes and herpetofaunal distributions. Here we examined differences in the composition, structure, and related environmental attributes of the three dominant vegetation types, both adjacent to and within the riparian corridors along 49 tributaries. Using automated dataloggers, we recorded hourly water and air temperatures and relative humidity throughout the summer at a representative subset of streams; providing us with daily means and amplitudes for these variables within riparian environments during the hottest period. Although the three vegetation types that dominate this landscape each had unique structural attributes, the overlap in plant species composition indicates that they represent a seral continuum. None-the-less, we found distinct microclimates in each type. Only riparian within late-seral forests contained summer water temperatures that could support cold-water-adapted species. We evaluated landscape-level variables to determine the best predictors of water temperature as represented by the maximum weekly maximum temperature (MWMT). The best model for predicting MWMT (adj. R2=0.69) consisted of catchment area, aspect, and the proportion of non-forested (grassland) patches. Our model provides a useful tool for management of cold-water fauna (e.g. salmonids, stream amphibians) throughout California's "Mediterranean" climate zone. [source]

Abstract Throughout Earth history a small number of global catastrophic events leading to biotic crises have caused mass extinctions. Here, using a technique that combines taxonomic and numerical data, we consider the effects of the Cenomanian,Turonian and Cretaceous,Tertiary mass extinctions on the terrestrial spider fauna in the light of new fossil data. We provide the first evidence that spiders suffered no decline at the family level during these mass extinction events. On the contrary, we show that they increased in relative numbers through the Cretaceous and beyond the Cretaceous,Tertiary extinction event. [source]


Predator size, prey size and threshold food densities of diving ducks: does a common prey base support fewer large animals?

Summary 1. Allometry predicts that a given habitat area or common prey biomass supports fewer numbers of larger than smaller predators; however, birds from related taxa or the same feeding guild often deviate from this pattern. In particular, foraging costs of birds may differ among locomotor modes, while intake rates vary with accessibility, handling times and energy content of different-sized prey. Such mechanisms might affect threshold prey densities needed for energy balance, and thus relative numbers of different-sized predators in habitats with varying prey patches. 2. We compared the foraging profitability (energy gain minus cost) of two diving ducks: smaller lesser scaup (Aythya affinis, 450,1090 g) and larger white-winged scoters (Melanitta fusca, 950,1800 g). Calculations were based on past measurements of dive costs with respirometry, and of intake rates of a common bivalve prey ranging in size, energy content and burial depth in sediments. 3. For scaup feeding on small prey <12 mm long, all clams buried deeper than 5 cm were unprofitable at realistic prey densities. For clams buried in the top 5 cm, the profitability threshold decreased from 216 to 34 clams m,2 as energy content increased from 50 to 300 J clam,1. 4. For larger scoters feeding on larger prey 18,24 mm long, foraging was profitable for clams buried deeper than 5 cm, with a threshold density of 147 m,2 for clams containing 380 J clam,1. For clams <5 cm deep, the threshold density decreased from 86 to 36 clams m,2 as energy content increased from 380 to 850 J clam,1. If scoters decreased dive costs by swimming with wings as well as feet (not an option for scaup), threshold prey densities were 11,12% lower. 5. Our results show that threshold densities of total prey numbers for different-sized ducks depend on prey size structure and depth in the sediments. Thus, heterogeneity in disturbance regimes and prey population dynamics can create a mosaic of patches favouring large or small predators. Whether a given area or total prey biomass will support greater numbers of larger or smaller predators will vary with these effects. [source]


Patterns of reproductive effort and success in birds: path analyses of long-term data from European ducks

Summary 1We tested ecological hypotheses about timing of breeding and reproductive effort in birds, by analysing > 15-year data sets for individually marked females in three species of Latvian ducks (northern shoveler, tufted duck, common pochard). 2Duckling survival and recruitment declined with advancing hatch date in pochard and tufted duck, after controlling for effects of female age and other factors with path analysis, a novel finding which indicates that fitness advantages associated with early hatching extended beyond the prefledging period. Logistic regression analysis suggested further that individual duckling prefledging survival was moderate in the earliest phase of the breeding season, greatest in mid-season and lowest later on. 3However, selection acting against early hatched ducklings was surpassed by strong directional selection favouring recruitment of the earliest hatching females. The absolute and relative numbers of female recruits produced by a breeding female declined sharply with advancing hatch date in all species. 4Unlike previous studies, an hypothesized intraspecific trade-off between duckling mass and brood size was detected, being very robust in two of three species. 5Unexpectedly, female age effects on recruitment were manifested only indirectly by several pathways, the most important being the earlier hatching dates of older females. Size-adjusted body mass (i.e. condition index) was positively related to reproductive success, and was 2,8-fold more influential than female size (indexed by wing length). 6Overall, fecundity-independent variables (e.g. hatching date, weather, indices of duckling production and habitat quality) generally had 2,10 times greater influence on recruitment rates than did fecundity-dependent variables such as female size or condition, duckling mass and brood size, suggesting a critical role for external environmental factors vs. individual female-specific traits in the recruitment process. A novel artificial habitat collection device for studying resettlement patterns in anguillid glass eels

The number of glass eels Anguilla australis and A. reinhardtii caught in artificial habitat collectors, made from a PVC base and polyethylene split rope fibres, was related to the number of rope fibre tufts attached to each collector rather than collector area directly. Ageing of collectors in situ to promote algal growth enhanced the catch of glass eels. Glass eels entered the collectors at night primarily during the flood tide, and did not move into the collectors during daylight hours. Glass eel abundance increased with increasing distance from the freshwater drain located in the causeway. The artificial habitat collectors are effective for assessing relative numbers of resettling glass eels and may be useful for studying recruitment and settlement patterns of other anguillid eel species, as well as identifying areas and habitats within a catchment that provide important shelter for glass eels. Sampling glass eels can be carried out with maximum effect and minimum effort using compact, aged artificial habitat collectors on the night time flood tide when low tide coincides with dusk. Estimation of global structural and transport properties of peptides through the modeling of their CZE mobility data

Abstract Peptide electrophoretic mobility data are interpreted through a physicochemical CZE model, providing estimates of the equivalent hydrodynamic radius, hydration, effective and total charge numbers, actual ionizing pK, pH-near molecule and electrical permittivity of peptide domain, among other basic properties. In this study, they are used to estimate some peptide global structural properties proposed, providing thus a distinction among different peptides. Therefore, the solvent drag on the peptide is obtained through a characteristic friction power coefficient of the number of amino acid residues, defined from the global chain conformation in solution. As modeling of the effective electrophoretic mobility of peptides is carried out in terms of particle hydrodynamic size and shape coupled to hydration and effective charge, a packing dimension related to chain conformation within the peptide domain may be defined. In addition, the effective and total charge number fractions of peptides provide some clues on the interpretation of chain conformations within the framework of scaling laws. Furthermore, the model estimates transport properties, such as sedimentation, friction and diffusion coefficients. As the relative numbers of ionizing, polar and non-polar amino acid residues vary in peptides, their global structural properties defined here change appreciably. Protective effect of a marine oligopeptide preparation from Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) on radiation-induced immune suppression in mice

Abstract BACKGROUND: A marine oligopeptide preparation (MOP) obtained from Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) by the method of enzymatic hydrolysis, has been found to enhance the innate and adaptive immunities through stimulation of the secretion of cytokines in mice. The current study aimed to further investigate the protective effect of MOP on radiation-induced immune suppression in mice. RESULTS: Female ICR mice (6,8 weeks old) were randomly divided into three groups, i.e. blank control, irradiation control and MOP (1.350 g kg,1 body weight) plus irradiation-treated group. MOP significantly increased the survival rate and prolonged the survival times for 30 days after irradiation, and lessened the radiation-induced suppression of T- or B-lymphocyte proliferation, resulting in the recovery of cell-mediated and humoral immune functions. This effect may be produced by augmentation of the relative numbers of radioresistant CD4+ T cells, enhancement of the level of immunostimulatory cytokine, IL-12, reduction of the level of total cellular NF-,B through the induction of I,B in spleen and inhibition of the apoptosis of splenocytes. ABSTRACT We present optical and infrared broad-band images, radio maps, and optical spectroscopy for the nuclear region of a sample of nearby galaxies. The galaxies have been drawn from a complete volume-limited sample for which we have already presented X-ray imaging. We modelled the stellar component of the spectroscopic observations to determine the star formation history of our targets. Diagnostic diagrams were used to classify the emission-line spectra and determine the ionizing mechanism driving the nuclear regions. All those sources classified as active galactic nuclei present small Eddington ratios (,10,3,10,6), implying a very slow growth rate of their black holes. We finally investigate the relative numbers of active and normal nuclei as a function of host galaxy luminosity and find that the fraction of active galaxies slowly rises as a function of host absolute magnitude in the MB,,12 to ,22 range. ANTI-CD3 therapy expands the numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ treg cells and induces sustained amelioration of collagen-induced arthritis

Objective To assess the therapeutic potential of anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) for rheumatoid arthritis, using collagen-induced arthritis as an animal model. Methods Arthritis was induced in DBA/1 mice by immunization with type II collagen. After disease onset, a single injection of anti-CD3 mAb (20 ,g/mouse) was administered, and arthritis severity was monitored over a 10-day period. Results Anti-CD3 mAb treatment resulted in a sustained reduction in disease activity, which was associated with an increase in the proportion of naturally occurring CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells and the generation of a population of CD8+CD25+FoxP3+ Treg cells. Anti-CD3 mAb treatment did not alter the capacity of CD4+ Treg cells to suppress effector T cell proliferation and interferon-, (IFN,) production in vitro. However, CD4+ Treg cells from both anti-CD3 mAb,treated and control mice were unable to suppress interleukin-17 (IL-17) production. In contrast, CD8+ Treg cells induced by anti-CD3 therapy suppressed IL-17 production as well as CD4+ T cell proliferation and IFN, production. Conclusion These results show that anti-CD3 mAb treatment has important therapeutic potential for rheumatoid arthritis and has the capacity to generate antiarthritic CD8+ Treg cells and expand the relative numbers of CD4+ Treg cells.
