Li Summary Muscle fibre traits are related with meat quality in meat animals. In this study, a whole-genome scan with 183 microsatellite markers covering the pig genome was performed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for cross-sectional area, numerical percentage and relative area of type I, IIA and IIB myofibres, fibre number per square centimetre and total fibre number in the longissimus muscle by using 120 F2 animals in a White Duroc × Erhualian intercross. In total, 20 QTL were mapped on pig chromosomes (SSC) 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 11, 15, 16 and X, of which eight reached genome-wide significance levels and explained large proportions (6.53,34.63%) of phenotypic variance. Five QTL detected in this study confirmed the previous QTL reports and the others were detected for the first time. Chinese Erhualian alleles are generally associated with muscle fibre traits favourable for meat quality. [source] Lichen acclimatization on retention trees: a conservation physiology lessonJOURNAL OF APPLIED ECOLOGY, Issue 4 2009Kadi Jairus Summary 1.,Green-tree retention (GTR) has been suggested as a means to effectively support epiphytic lichen species in managed forests, given the low lichen mortality on retention trees in the short term. However, a long-term perspective requires a physiological understanding of lichen responses to logging. This study compares anatomical, morphological and physiological traits of lichens on retention trees and on intact forest trees. 2.,Thalli of nine taxa (Buellia griseovirens, Cladonia digitata, Hypogymnia physodes, Lecanora allophana, Lecanora pulicaris, Lepraria spp., Peltigera praetextata, Pertusaria amara and Phlyctis argena) were sampled from birch Betula spp. and aspen Populus tremula in GTR cuts, where they had previously been reported to survive well, and in adjacent managed forests. In the laboratory, chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm, thickness of the upper cortex, photobiont to mycobiont ratio and (in Lecanora species) the relative area of the apothecia were measured. 3.,All the lichen samples collected from GTR cuts appeared alive, but their Fv/Fm was significantly lower, relative areas of the apothecia were larger and the upper cortices of thalli were thicker compared with the samples from adjacent forests. No difference in photobiont to mycobiont ratio was found. These patterns were broadly consistent among species, indicating a common mechanism: while suffering from photoinhibition, the lichens had acclimatized to the open conditions and increased their investment to sexual reproduction in a few years. 4.,Synthesis and applications. The study highlights the value of a morpho-physiological framework for conservation management by pointing out that, in GTR areas, lichen survival is high-irradiation limited and heavily dependent on phenotypic plasticity. A thin upper cortex may be a common feature of the most sensitive species. To sustain epiphyte populations in managed forests, precautionary harvesting strategies (gradual felling; group-retention; extended rotations) should be preferred and large-enough populations should be preserved, even though short-term studies suggest a high survival of lichens in cut areas. [source] Aggressiveness of Phytophthora infestans and phenotypic analysis of resistance in wild Petota accessions in EcuadorPLANT PATHOLOGY, Issue 4 2007M. G. Chacón The aggressiveness of four Phytophthora infestans isolates collected from wild and cultivated potato species (sect. Petota) and the level of resistance of nine Petota species were assessed in the highland tropics of Ecuador. For this, isolates of P. infestans were inoculated on whole plants of Petota species in the field and net house and six epidemiological components , infection frequency (IF), incubation period (IP), latent period (LP), lesion size (LS), lesion growth rate (LGR), and relative area under the lesion expansion curve (RAULEC) , were measured during a single infection cycle. Additionally, host specificity was determined by testing for a significant host by pathogen interaction using the same components. The results showed significant differences among isolates of the EC-1 clonal lineage for IP, IF, and RAULEC. Significant differences among isolates were not found for the other components measured. There were significant differences in resistance among the accessions of Petota hosts tested. RAULEC, LGR, LP, and LS were in general more adequate in differentiating among the more resistant and more susceptible accessions but the importance of each component varied with host species. There was slight and inconsistent evidence for the existence of host specificity in some isolates of Petota hosts. IP was the only component for which a significant host by isolate interaction was observed and in most cases the isolates had the greatest aggressiveness on their hosts of origin. [source] Evaluation of foliar resistance in potato to Phytophthora infestans based on an international field trial networkPLANT PATHOLOGY, Issue 2 2005J. G. Hansen During the period 2000,03, local potato cultivars in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Denmark were tested for foliar resistance to Phytophthora infestans (late blight) in an international field trial network. Four standard cultivars were included in the trials: Sava, Oleva, Danva and Kuras. Primary disease-assessment data were entered into a common database, and parameters from the disease progress curves were calculated and made available on interactive web pages. A regression model, using relative area under disease progress curve (RAUDPC) values for cv. Oleva as a reference, was developed for the estimation of 1,9 scale values, where 1 = most susceptible. Standard deviations for the estimated 1,9 scale values and a nonparametric rank stability analysis of RAUDPC were used to evaluate the stability of resistance of the cultivars. Overall, the results showed stability of resistance for cvs Sava, Oleva and Danva, but not for Kuras. Use of the Internet-based Web-Blight service in this study facilitated comparison of results among countries for the level and stability of resistance. The estimated 1,9 scale values were similar to, or slightly lower than, those from official cultivar lists or from the European Cultivated Potato Database, especially for the more resistant cultivars. Possible reasons for discrepancies from different sources and locations are discussed. It is concluded that RAUPDC and the derived 1,9 scale values are useful for ranking cultivars for resistance to P. infestans, but this information is not detailed enough for use in a decision support system for late blight control. [source] A quantitative analysis of the Eutherian orbit: correlations with masticatory apparatusBIOLOGICAL REVIEWS, Issue 1 2008Philip G. Cox Abstract The mammalian orbit, or eye-socket, is a highly plastic region of the skull. It comprises between seven and nine bones, all of which vary widely in their contribution to this region among the different mammalian orders and families. It is hypothesised that the structure of the mammalian orbit is principally influenced by the forces generated by the jaw-closing musculature. In order to quantify the orbit, fourteen linear, angular and area measurements were taken from 84 species of placental mammals using a Microscribe-3D digitiser. The results were then analysed using principal components analysis. The results of the multivariate analysis on untransformed data showed a clear division of the mammalian taxa into temporalis-dominant forms and masseter-dominant forms. This correlation between orbital structure and masticatory musculature was reinforced by results from the size-corrected data, which showed a separation of the taxa into the three specialised feeding types proposed by Turnbull (1970): i.e. ,carnivore-shear', ,ungulate-grinding' and ,rodent-gnawing'. Moreover, within the rodents there was a clear distinction between species in which the masseter is highly developed and those in which the temporalis has more prominence. These results were reinforced by analysis of variance which showed significant differences in the relative orbital areas of certain bones between temporalis-dominant and masseter-dominant taxa. Subsequent cluster analysis suggested that most of the variables could be grouped into three assemblages: those associated with the length of the rostrum; those associated with the width of the skull; and those associated with the relative size of the orbit and the shape of the face. However, the relative area of the palatine bone showed weak correlations with the other variables and did not fit into any group. Overall the relative area of the palatine was most closely correlated with feeding type, and this measure that appeared to be most strongly associated with the arrangement of the masticatory musculature. These results give a strong indication that, although orbital structure is in part determined by the relative size and orientation of the orbits, the forces generated by the muscles of mastication also have a large effect. [source] Influence of long-term cigarette smoking on immunoglobulin E-mediated allergy, pulmonary function, and high-resolution computed tomography lung densitometry in elderly patients with asthmaCLINICAL & EXPERIMENTAL ALLERGY, Issue 1 2004F. Mitsunobu Summary Background Smoking is the most important cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the influence of cigarette smoking on the pathogenesis of asthma in the elderly remains controversial. This study attempted to clarify the influence of cigarette smoking on elderly asthmatics. Methods Forty-eight asthmatics over 70 years old (25 ex-smokers and 23 never-smokers) and 20 patients with COPD over 70 years old (all ex-smokers) were studied to determine the influence of cigarette smoking on IgE-mediated allergy (total IgE, IgE antibodies against inhalant allergens, bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR), generation of leukotriene (LT) B4 and C4), pulmonary function, and the relative area of lung showing attenuation values less than ,950 Hounsfield units (RA950) on high-resolution computed tomography scans. Results The incidence of positive IgE antibodies against inhalant allergens, BHR, and the generation of leukotriene B4 (LTB4) by leucocytes were significantly increased in patients with a history of smoking compared with those without. Residual volume (%RV) was significantly increased, and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide was significantly decreased in ex-smokers with asthma and COPD compared with never-smokers with asthma. Inspiratory RA950 and ratio of expiratory RA950 to inspiratory RA950 were significantly larger in asthmatics with a smoking history than in those without, and in COPD patients than in asthmatics. Conclusion Cigarette smoking enhances the production of IgE antibodies, BHR, and generation of LTB4 by leucocytes in elderly asthmatics. Increased hyper-inflation or emphysematous changes of the lungs expressed by increased RA950, closely related to %RV, was more frequently observed in ex-smokers compared with never-smokers. [source] Hosts and distribution of Collybia fusipes in France and factors related to the disease's severityFOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 1 2002D. PIOU Using data collected by two different observation networks, it was possible to clarify the distribution of Collybia fusipes in France. It is frequently found in the western and northern parts of France, mainly on Quercus rubra and Quercus robur, and to a somewhat lesser extent on Quercus petraea. When the relative areas covered by these species are compared, it is evident that Q. rubra is much the most susceptible of the three species. The fungus has been less frequently reported in the south-eastern quarter of France, where Quercus ilex and Quercus pubescens are the dominant species. Complementary observations carried out at the National Arboretum of Les Barres indicate that a large number of oak species are susceptible to infection by this fungus, particularly those in the subgenus Erythrobalanus. These observations are discussed with reference to reports of this fungus throughout Europe. In a Q. rubra stand, fruit-body clumps were monitored and root damage was assessed on 73 final-crop trees and 40 codominant trees. The results suggest that C. fusipes does not preferentially infect weakened trees. Both the severity of root damage and the number of fruit-body clumps increased with increasing depth to signs of waterlogging. Le champignon est fréquent dans les moitiés ouest et nord du pays, principalement sur Quercus rubra et Q. robur, et dans une moindre mesure sur Q. petraea. Quand on considère la surface relative occupée par ces espèces, il apparaît évident que Q. rubra est le plus sensible. Der Pilz ist im Westen und Norden des Landes häufig auf Quercus rubra und Quercus robur zu finden, etwas weniger häufig auf Quercus petraea. Beim Vergleich der von diesen Arten bestockten Flächen wird deutlich, dass Q. rubra die anfälligste der drei Eichenarten ist. Im südöstlichen Teil Frankreichs, wo Quercus ilex und Quercus pubescens dominieren, wurde der Pilz weniger häufig nachgewiesen. Ergänzende Beobachtungen im Arboretum National des Barres ergaben, dass zahlreiche Eichenarten gegen C. fusipes anfällig sind, insbesondere die des Subgenus Erythrobalanus. [source] Opportunities for manipulating catchment water balance by changing vegetation type on a topographic sequence: a simulation studyHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 6 2008Enli Wang Abstract This simulation study explores opportunities to reduce catchment deep drainage through better matching land use with soil and topography, including the ,harvesting' (evapotranspiration) of excess water running on to lower land units. A farming system simulator was coupled with a catchment hydrological framework to enable analysis of climate variability and 11 different land-use options as they impact the catchment water balance. These land-use options were arranged in different configurations down a sequence of three hydrologically interconnected slope units (uphill, mid-slope and valley floor land units) in a subcatchment of Simmons Creek, southern New South Wales, Australia. With annual crops, the valley floor land units were predicted to receive 187 mm year,1 of run-on water in addition to annual rainfall in 1 in 10 years, and in excess of 94 mm year,1 in 1 in 4 years. In this valley floor position, predicted drainage averaged approximately 110 mm year,1 under annual crops and pastures, whereas permanent tree cover or perennial lucerne was predicted to reduce drainage by up to 99%. The planting of trees or lucerne on the valley floor units could ,harvest' run-on water, reducing drainage for the whole subcatchment with proportionately small reduction in land areas cropped. Upslope land units, even though often having shallower soil, will not necessarily be the most effective locations to plant perennial vegetation for the purposes of recharge reduction. Water harvesting opportunities are site specific, dependent on the amounts and frequency of flows of water to lower landscape units, the amounts and frequency of deep drainage on the different land units, the relative areas of the different land units, and interactions with land use in the different slope positions. [source] The effect of aging on distraction osteogenesis in the ratJOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH, Issue 3 2001J. Aronson The effect of age on bone formation in the limb lengthening model of distraction osteogenesis (DO) was investigated in two studies using Sprague,Dawley (SD) rats from two colonies at various ages (CAMM: 9 vs 24 months, Harlan: 4 vs 24 months). External fixators were placed on the right tibiae of 30 male SD rats (20 CAMM, 10 Harlan) and mid-diaphyseal osteotomies were performed. Distraction was performed at 0.2 mm bid for 20 days (CAMM) or 14 days (Harlan). The experimental (DO) and control (contra-lateral) tibiae were removed for high-resolution radiography and decalcified histology. Videomicroscopy was used to quantitate radiodensity, histology (matrix type) and relative areas of cell proliferation, which was identified by proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunochemistry. Both studies demonstrated an age-related decrease in the percent mineralized bone (radiodensity) in the distraction gap (CAMM 9 vs 24 months: 68% vs 51%, P < 0.003; Harlan 4 vs 24 months: 95% vs 36%, P < 0.001) and no significant colony or distraction time-specific difference was seen between the two colonies of 24-month-old rats. Histology was performed on the Harlan rats. The DO gaps in the 24-month-old rats demonstrated less endosteal new bone compared to the 4-month-old rats (P < 0.01), but equivalent periosteal new bone. In 4-month-old rats, PCNA-immunostained cells were organized along the primary matrix front (where the first deposition of osteoid occurs) extending across both periosteal and endosteal surfaces. In 24-month-old rats, PCNA + cells were organized in zones along the periosteal new bone fronts only and irregularly scattered throughout the endosteal gap within a fibrovascular non-ossifying matrix. These results indicate that 24-month-old rats have a relative deficit in endosteal bone formation which may not be related to cell proliferation but rather to cell organization. This model reflects the clinical situation where radiographic findings in older patients demonstrate significant delays in mineralization during DO. We believe this model of DO in aged rats presents unique in vivo opportunities to test hypotheses concerning (1) the effects of aging on bone repair, (2) the effects of pharmacological agents on bone repair in a geriatric setting, and (3) to study the mechanisms underlying DO. © 2001 Orthopaedic Research Society. [source] Diffractive CIE 1931 chromaticity diagramCOLOR RESEARCH & APPLICATION, Issue 5 2007Joni Orava Abstract A novel diffractive CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram is generated by utilizing surface relief gratings on a plastic sample. A properly illuminated sample is shown to reflect the CIE chromaticity diagram with exact colors and large gamut. Additive color mixing is accomplished by utilizing the four main peaks of a 4000 K fluorescent lamp's spectrum as the primary colors. The primary grating units are reflecting the combination of the primary colors to the desired viewing angle and thereby forming the correct chromaticity (x, y) at each pixel of chromaticity diagram. Weights of primary colors at each pixel of the diagram are controlled by fixing the relative areas of the primary gratings. The master grating is fabricated with aid of electron beam lithography. The final grating is hot embossed on a polycarbonate sample using an electroplated nickel shim.
