[source] Large earthquakes and the abandonment of prehistoric coastal settlements in 15th century New ZealandGEOARCHAEOLOGY: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL, Issue 6 2003James R. Goff This paper reports on the effects of large earthquakes and related events, such as tsunamis, on prehistoric coastal settlements in New Zealand. It is based on field observations at several well-established archaeological sites around the Cook Strait region and on literature reviews. We identify three broad periods of seismic activity in New Zealand since human occupation of the islands: 13th century, 15th century, and the 1750s to 1850s. The most significant, from a prehistoric human perspective, is the 15th century. Using examples from the Cook Strait region, we suggest that the abandonment of coastal settlements, the movement of people from the coast to inland areas, and a shift in settlement location from sheltered coastal bays to exposed headlands, was due to seismic activity, including tsunamis. We expect similar patterns to have occurred in other parts of New Zealand, and other coastal areas of the world with longer occupation histories. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] Use of volumetric computerized tomography as a primary outcome measure to evaluate drug efficacy in the prevention of peri-prosthetic osteolysis: A 1-year clinical pilot of etanercept vs. placeboJOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH, Issue 6 2003Edward M. Schwarz Although total hip replacement (THR) is amongst the most successful and beneficial medical procedures to date, long-term outcomes continue to suffer from aseptic loosening secondary to peri-prosthetic osteolysis. Extensive research over the last two decades has elucidated a central mechanism for osteolysis in which wear debris generated from the implant stimulates inflammatory cells to promote osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. The cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF,) has been demonstrated to be central to this process and is considered to be a leading target for intervention. Unfortunately, even though FDA approved TNF antagonists are available (etanercept), currently there are no reliable outcome measures that can be used to evaluate the efficacy of a drug to prevent peri-prosthetic osteolysis. To the end of developing an effective outcome measure, we evaluated the progression of lesion size in 20 patients with established peri-acetabular osteolysis (mean = 29.99 cm3, range = 2.9,92.7 cm3) of an uncemented primary THR over 1-year, using a novel volumetric computer tomography (3D-CT) technique. We also evaluated polyethylene wear, urine N-telopeptides and functional assessments (WOMAC, SF-36 and Harris Hip Score) for comparison. At the time of entry into the study baseline CT scans were obtained and the patients were randomized to etanercept (25 mg s.q., twice/week) and placebo in a double-blinded fashion. CT scans, urine and functional assessments were also obtained at 6 and 12 months. No serious adverse drug related events were reported, but one patient had to have revision surgery before completion of the study due to aseptic loosening. No remarkable differences between the groups were observed. However, the study was not powered to see significant drug effects. 3D-CT data from the 19 patients was used to determine the mean increase in lesion size over 48 weeks, which was 3.19 cm3 (p < 0.0013). Analysis of the urine N-telopeptides and functional assessment data failed to identify a significant correlation with wear or osteolysis. In conclusion, volumetric CT was able to measure progression of osteolysis over the course of a year, thus providing a technology that could be used in therapeutic trials. [source] Handling Weather Related Risks Through the Financial Markets: Considerations of Credit Risk, Basis Risk, and HedgingJOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, Issue 2 2007Linda L. Golden The profits of many businesses are strongly affected by weather related events, and insurance against weather related risks (acts of God) has been a traditional domain for transfer of (certain) of these risks. Recent innovations in the capital market have now provided financial instruments to transfer and hedge some of these risks. Unlike insurance solutions, however, using these financial derivative instruments creates a situation in which the return to the purchaser of the instrument is no longer perfectly correlated with the loss experienced. Such a mismatch creates new risks which must be examined and evaluated as part of ascertaining cost effective risk management plans. Two newly engendered risks, basis risk (the risk created by the fact that the return from the financial derivative is a function of weather at a prespecified geographical location which may not be identical to the location of the firm) and credit risk (the risk that the counterparty to the derivative contract may not perform), are analyzed in this article. Using custom tailored derivatives from the over the counter market can decrease basis risk, but increases credit risk. Using standardized exchange traded derivatives decreases credit risk but increases basis risk. Here also the effectiveness of using hedging methods involving forwards and futures having linear payoffs (linear hedging) and methods using derivatives having nonlinear payoffs such as those involving options (nonlinear hedging) for the purpose of hedging basis risk are examined jointly with credit risk. [source] Memory fragments as components of autobiographical knowledgeAPPLIED COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 3 2007Darryl Bruce Adults described and dated two kinds of personal remembrances: a fragment,a memory moment that is largely bereft of context,and an episodic, personal event memory,a narrative that consists of a number of related events. In Experiment 1 subjects reported memories from when they were 0,8 years of age and in Experiment 2, from when they were 0,16 years of age. Fragments were judged to be older than event memories, especially in Experiment 2 where the estimated ages of most fragments were from 0 to 8 years and of most episodic memories, from 8 to 16 years. Ratings of various features of the two kinds of memories also differed. We conclude that isolated memory moments possess validity and that although they are most likely to arise when the autobiographical memory system is not fully developed, they can also originate during a time when it is. Regression analysis of doubly censored data has recently attracted considerable attention and for this a few methods have been proposed (Kim et al., 1993, Biometrics49, 13,22; Sun et al., 1999, Biometrics55, 909,914; Pan, 2001, Biometrics57, 1245,1250). However, all of the methods are based on the proportional hazards model and it is well known that the proportional hazards model may not fit failure time data well sometimes. This article investigates regression analysis of such data using the additive hazards model and an estimating equation approach is proposed for inference about regression parameters of interest. The proposed method can be easily implemented and the properties of the proposed estimates of regression parameters are established. The method is applied to a set of doubly censored data from an AIDS cohort study. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS , An approximate cost of management of drug related events presenting to the emergency medical department in a tertiary care hospital over a period of 4 months. , Compares the cost incurred in a public sector hospital to the projected cost of management of same events in a private sector hospital. , Gives a rough estimate of economic burden on the health care system due to adverse drug events. AIMS Drug related events (DREs) contribute significantly to hospital admissions. These are largely preventable events and require optimum use of the therapeutic agents. The study was conducted to analyze the cost of treatment of DREs. PATIENTS & METHODS All visits to medical emergency department of a tertiary care public sector hospital in northern India were recorded in a prospective, non-interventional manner over a period of 4 months. DREs were recognized and were followed up till their stay in the hospital. Data about the cost generating components of direct and indirect costs of treatment of DREs were collected. The projected cost of treatment of the same DREs in a private sector hospital was estimated and compared. RESULTS Out of 1833 admissions, 92(5.01%) were due to DREs. Maximum cases were due to non compliance (66%) followed by ADR (28%) and drug overdose(6%). The common DREs leading to ED visits were cerebrovascular accident(19.44%), followed by accelerated hypertension(18.36%) and diabetic ketoacidosis(14.04%). Total cost of management of all the 92 DREs in our hospital was calculated to be INR17,37,339(,30,215). The direct cost was INR1,72,961(,3008) and the approximate indirect cost was INR15,64, 378(,27, 206). The projected cost of management of all the 92 DREs was estimated to be INR63,63,872(,1,01, 676) in a private sector hospital. CONCLUSION The study shows that ADEs leading to emergency department visits and hospitalizations constitute a significant economic burden. Training of the patients and the prescribers may lessen the economic burden on the patient as well as the health care system. [source] Human ovarian carcinoma cells: Histone deacetylase inhibitors exhibit antiproliferative activity and potently induce apoptosisCANCER, Issue 12 2004Noriyuki Takai M.D., Ph.D. Abstract BACKGROUND Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) can inhibit proliferation, stimulate apoptosis, and induce cell cycle arrest in malignant cells. METHODS The authors investigated the effects of four HDACIs on nine ovarian carcinoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo. Ovarian carcinoma cells were treated with a variety of HDACIs, and their effects on cell growth, the cell cycle, apoptosis, and related events were investigated. The ability of valproic acid (VPA) to inhibit the growth of ovarian tumors in immunodeficient mice was also assessed. RESULTS Clonogenic assays showed that all ovarian carcinoma cell lines were sensitive to the growth-inhibitory effects of the HDACIs. Cell cycle analysis indicated that their exposure to HDACIs decreased the proportion of cells in S phase and increased the proportion of cells in the G0/G1 and/or G2/M phases of the cell cycle. Terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated uridine triphosphate end-labeling assays demonstrated that HDACIs induced apoptosis, which occurred in concert with alterations in the expression of genes related to apoptosis, cell growth, and malignant phenotype, including the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis revealed a notable increase in levels of acetylated histones associated with the p21 promoter after treatment with suberoylanilide bishydroxamine. In addition, in experiments involving nude mice, VPA significantly inhibited human ovarian tumor growth without toxic side effects. CONCLUSIONS The results of the current study suggest that HDACIs may be particularly effective in the treatment of ovarian tumors. Cancer 2004. © 2004 American Cancer Society. [source] A Counterfactual Analysis on Unlimited Surplus Labor in Rural ChinaCHINA AND WORLD ECONOMY, Issue 1 2008Fang Cai J21; J22; J24; O33 Abstract Using a counterfactual analysis approach, the present paper examines a host of conventional wisdoms relating to issues of farmer, the countryside and agriculture, which are believed to be all originated from the existence of mass surplus laborers in China. When analyzing various sources of statistics, evidence shows that there is no longer a large pool of surplus laborers in rural China as most people believe. Based on this counterfactual result, all related events, such as the direction of agricultural technological changes, the level of comparative productivity of agricultural labor, and the degree of rural-urban income gap must be reconsidered.
