    Sensor network design for fault tolerant estimation

    Abstract This paper addresses the problem of fault tolerant estimation and the design of fault tolerant sensor networks. Fault tolerance is defined with respect to a given estimation objective, namely a given functional of the system state should remain observable when sensor failures occur. Redundant and minimal sensor sets are defined and organized into an automaton which contains all the subsets of sensors such that the estimation objective can be achieved. Three criteria, which evaluate the system fault tolerance with respect to sensor failures when a reconfiguration strategy is used, are introduced: (strong and weak) redundancy degrees (RD), sensor network reliability (R), and mean time to non-observability (MTTNO). Sensor networks are designed by finding redundant sensor sets whose RD and/or R and/or MTTNO are larger than some specified values. A ship boiler example is developed for illustration.     Signaling pathways regulating the expression of Prx1 and Prx2 in the chick mandibular mesenchyme

    Abstract Prx1 and Prx2 are members of the aristaless-related homeobox genes shown to play redundant but essential roles in morphogenesis of the mandibular processes. To gain insight into the signaling pathways that regulate expression of Prx genes in the mandibular mesenchyme, we used the chick as a model system. We examined the patterns of gene expression in the face and the roles of signals derived from the epithelium on the expression of Prx genes in the mandibular mesenchyme. Our results demonstrated stage-dependent roles of mandibular epithelium on the expression of Prx in the mandibular mesenchyme and provide evidence for positive roles of members of the fibroblast and hedgehog families derived from mandibular epithelium on the expression of Prx genes in the mandibular mesenchyme. Our studies suggest that endothelin-1 signaling derived from the mesenchyme is involved in restricting the expression of Prx2 to the medial mandibular mesenchyme.     Type I collagen is a genetic modifier of matrix metalloproteinase 2 in murine skeletal development

    Abstract Recessive inactivating mutations in human matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2, gelatinase A) are associated with syndromes that include abnormal facial appearance, short stature, and severe bone loss. Mmp2,/, mice have only mild aspects of these abnormalities, suggesting that MMP2 function is redundant during skeletal development in the mouse. Here, we report that Mmp2,/, mice with additional mutations that render type I collagen resistant to collagenase-mediated cleavage to TCA and TCB fragments (Col1a1r/r mice) have severe developmental defects resembling those observed in MMP2 -null humans. Composite Mmp2,/,;Col1a1r/r mice were born in expected Mendelian ratios but were half the size of wild-type, Mmp2,/,, and Col1a1r/r mice and failed to thrive. Furthermore, composite Mmp2,/,;Col1a1r/r animals had very abnormal craniofacial features with shorter snouts, bulging skulls, incompletely developed calvarial bones and unclosed cranial sutures. In addition, trabecular bone mass was reduced concomitant with increased numbers of bone-resorbing osteoclasts and osteopenia. In vitro, MMP2 had a unique ability among the collagenolytic MMPs to degrade mutant collagen, offering a possible explanation for the genetic interaction between Mmp2 and Col1a1r. Thus, because mutations in the type I collagen gene alter the phenotype of mice with null mutations in Mmp2, we conclude that type I collagen is an important modifier gene for Mmp2.     Effects of redundant and nonredundant bimodal sensory stimulation on heart rate in bobwhite quail embryos

    Abstract Research with both animal embryos and human infants has provided evidence that information presented redundantly and in temporal synchrony across sensory modalities (intersensory redundancy) can guide selective attention, perceptual learning, and memory during early development. How this facilitation is achieved remains relatively unexamined. This study examined the effects of redundant versus nonredundant bimodal stimulation on a measure of physiological arousal (heart rate) in bobwhite quail embryos. Results show that quail embryos exposed to concurrent but nonredundant auditory and visual stimulation during the late stages of incubation exhibit significantly elevated heart rates following stimulus exposure and during stimulus reexposure when compared to embryos exposed to redundant and synchronous audiovisual stimulation, unimodal auditory stimulation, or no supplemental prenatal sensory stimulation. These findings indicate a functional distinction between redundant and nonredundant bimodal stimulation during early development and suggest that nonredundant bimodal stimulation during the prenatal period can raise arousal levels, thereby potentially interfering with the attentional capacities and perceptual learning of bobwhite quail.     Development and validation of the Diabetes Obstacles Questionnaire (DOQ) to assess obstacles in living with Type 2 diabetes

    Abstract Aims To develop and validate an easy-to-use questionnaire to identify obstacles to self management in Type 2 diabetes. Methods The Diabetes Obstacles Questionnaire (DOQ) was developed from earlier research and the literature. It was completed by 180 people with Type 2 diabetes, recruited from 22 general practices in the UK. Responders also completed a quality-of-life questionnaire (ADDQoL) and the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale. Results From analysis of the 176 usable questionnaires, 36 items of the original 113 items were deemed redundant. The remaining 77 items were assembled into eight sub-scales covering Medication, Self Monitoring, Knowledge and Beliefs, Diagnosis, Relationships with Health-Care Professionals, Lifestyle Changes, Coping, and Advice and Support. Each sub-scale had a factor structure of no more than three factors, had Cronbach's alpha of more than 0.75, and a Kaiser,Meyer,Olkin of more than 0.75. Each sub-scale correlated significantly with the PAID scale (P < 0.01), demonstrating criterion validity. Construct validity was shown by significant correlation between HbA1c and the sub-scales which relate to managing blood glucose levels: Self Monitoring, Relationship with Health-Care Professionals, Lifestyle Changes and Coping. Construct validity was further shown by significant correlation between QoL scores and Medication, Lifestyle Changes and Coping. Discussion The DOQ, comprising eight sub-scales, is a usable, valid instrument for both clinical and research settings. It helps to identify in detail the obstacles which an individual finds in living with Type 2 diabetes. [source]


    The high post-test probability of a cytological examination renders further investigations to establish a diagnosis of epithelial malignant pleural mesothelioma redundant

    Abstract The aim of the study was to establish in a prospective and blinded manner the diagnostic yield of morphology, immunocytochemistry (ICH) and electron microscopy (EM) in the cytological analysis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Pleural fluid from consecutive patients, 14 with a histologically proven MPM, 12 with a malignant pleuritis due to adenocarcinoma (AC), and 13 with a reactive pleural effusion (RM), was separately analyzed. Smears were incubated with monoclonal antibodies (Tag72, Ber-Ep4, anti-CEA, EMA). These were considered suggestive for MPM when only EMA stained positive, for AC when three out of four markers stained positive, and for RM when no marker stained positive. The post-test probability of the morphological, ICH, and EM analysis were 92, 100, 92% or MPM, 91, 100, 86% for AC, and 88, 88, 90% for RM, respectively. We concluded that the high post-test probability of a combined morphological and ICH diagnosis of MPM warrants to cease further diagnostic procedures in these patients.     Disaster risk, climate change and international development: scope for, and challenges to, integration

    Abstract Reducing losses to weather-related disasters, meeting the Millennium Development Goals and wider human development objectives, and implementing a successful response to climate change are aims that can only be accomplished if they are undertaken in an integrated manner. Currently, policy responses to address each of these independently may be redundant or, at worst, conflicting. We believe that this conflict can be attributed primarily to a lack of interaction and institutional overlap among the three communities of practice. Differences in language, method and political relevance may also contribute to the intellectual divide. Thus, this paper seeks to review the theoretical and policy linkages among disaster risk reduction, climate change and development. It finds that not only does action within one realm affect capacity for action in the others, but also that there is much that can be learnt and shared between realms in order to ensure a move towards a path of integrated and more sustainable development.     Behavioral economic analysis of cue-elicited craving for alcohol

    ABSTRACT Aims Craving as a motivational determinant of drug use remains controversial because of ambiguous empirical findings. A behavioral economic approach may clarify the nature of craving, theorizing that subjective craving functionally reflects an acute increase in a drug's value. The current study tested this hypothesis via a multidimensional assessment of alcohol demand over the course of an alcohol cue reactivity procedure. Design One-way within-subjects design. Setting Human laboratory environment. Participants Heavy drinkers (n = 92) underwent exposures to neutral (water) cues followed by personalized alcohol cues. Assessments Participants were assessed for craving, alcohol demand, affect, and salivation following each exposure. Findings Alcohol versus neutral cues significantly increased craving and multiple behavioral economic measures of the relative value of alcohol, including alcohol consumption under conditions of zero cost (intensity), maximum expenditure on alcohol (Omax), persistence in drinking to higher prices (breakpoint) and proportionate price insensitivity (normalized Pmax). Craving was significantly correlated with demand measures at levels ranging from 0.21,0.43. Conclusions These findings support the potential utility of a behavioral economic approach to understanding the role of environmental stimuli in alcohol-related decision making. Specifically, they suggest that the behavioral economic indices of demand may provide complementary motivational information that is related to though not entirely redundant with measures of subjective craving.     Functional redundancy in heterogeneous environments: implications for conservation

    It has been argued that one of the best ways to conserve biological diversity is to maintain the integrity of functional processes within communities, and this can be accomplished by assessing how much ecological redundancy exists in communities. Evidence suggests, however, that the functional roles species play are subject to the influences of local environmental conditions. Species may appear to perform the same function (i.e. be redundant) under a restricted set of conditions, yet their functional roles may vary in naturally heterogeneous environments. Incorporating the environmental context into ecological experiments would provide a critical perspective for examining functional redundancy among species. [source]


    Allowing for redundancy and environmental effects in estimates of home range utilization distributions

    Abstract Real location data for radio tagged animals can be challenging to analyze. They can be somewhat redundant, since successive observations of an animal slowly wandering through its environment may well show very similar locations. The data set can possess trends over time or be irregularly timed, and they can report locations in environments with features that should be incorporated to some degree. Also, the periods of observation may be too short to provide reliable estimates of characteristics such as inter-observation correlation levels that can be used in conventional time-series analyses. Moreover, stationarity (in the sense of the data being generated by a source that provides observations of constant mean, variance and correlation structure) may not be present. This article considers an adaptation of the kernel density estimator for estimating home ranges, an adaptation which allows for these various complications and which works well in the absence of exact (or precise) information about correlation structure and parameters.     Using spatial models and kriging techniques to optimize long-term ground-water monitoring networks: a case study

    Abstract In a pilot project, a spatial and temporal algorithm (geostatistical temporal,spatial or GTS) was developed for optimizing long-term monitoring (LTM) networks. Data from two monitored ground-water plumes were used to test the algorithm. The primary objective was to determine the degree to which sampling, laboratory analysis, and/or well construction resources could be pared without losing key statistical information concerning the plumes. Optimization of an LTM network requires an accurate assessment of both ground-water quality over time and trends or other changes in individual monitoring wells. Changes in interpolated concentration maps over time indicate whether ground-water quality has improved or declined. GTS separately identifies temporal and spatial redundancies. Temporal redundancy may be reduced by lengthening the time between sample collection. Spatial redundancy may be reduced by removing wells from the network which do not significantly impact assessment of ground-water quality. Part of the temporal algorithm in GTS involves computation of a composite temporal variogram to determine the least redundant overall sampling interval. Under this measure of autocorrelation between sampling events, the lag time at which the variogram reaches a sill is the sampling interval at which same-well measurements lack correlation and are therefore non-redundant. The spatial algorithm assumes that well locations are redundant if nearby wells offer nearly the same statistical information about the underlying plume. A well was considered redundant if its removal did not significantly change: (i) an interpolated map of the plume; (ii) the local kriging variances in that section of the plume; and (iii) the average global kriging variance. To identify well redundancy, local kriging weights were accumulated into global weights and used to gauge each well's relative contribution to the interpolated plume map. By temporarily removing that subset of wells with the lowest global kriging weights and re-mapping the plume, it was possible to determine how many wells could be removed without losing critical information. Test results from the Massachusetts Military Reserve (MMR) indicated that substantial savings in sampling, analysis and operational costs could be realized by utilizing GTS. Annual budgetary savings that would accrue were estimated at between 35 per cent and 5 per cent for both LTM networks under study.Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


    Unilateral Intracarotid Amobarbital Procedure for Language Lateralization

    Summary:,Purpose: The determination of language dominance as part of the presurgical workup of patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsies has experienced fundamental changes. With the introduction of noninvasive functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the number of patients receiving intracarotid amobarbital procedures (IAPs) for assessment of language dominance has decreased considerably. However, recent studies show that because of methodologic limitations of fMRI, IAP remains an important tool for language lateralization. The current study examines whether unilateral instead of bilateral IAP is an adequate way to apply IAP with reduced invasiveness. Methods: We retrospectively examine the predictive value of unilateral IAP for the results of bilateral IAP based on a sample of 75 patients with various types of language dominance. Target parameters are the prediction of the language-dominant hemisphere and the identification of patients with atypical language dominance. For language assessment based on unilateral IAP, we introduce the measure hemispheric language capacity (HLC). Results: Unilateral IAP performed on the side of intended surgery quantifies language capacity contralateral to the intended surgery. It detects atypical (bilateral or right) language dominance in the majority of patients. Experience with a separate series of 107 patients requiring presurgical language lateralization shows that in >80%, bilateral IAPs are redundant. Conclusions: Unilateral IAP is principally sufficient for language lateralization in the presurgical evaluation of patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsies. Necessity of bilateral IAP is restricted to few indications (e.g., callosotomy). In times of noninvasive language lateralization, we propose unilateral IAP as the method of choice for the verification of doubtful (bilateral) fMRI activation patterns. [source]


    Interaction of a novel mitochondrial protein, 4-nitrophenylphosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like protein homolog 1 (NIPSNAP1), with the amyloid precursor protein family

    Abstract Amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its paralogs, amyloid precursor-like protein-1 and amyloid precursor-like protein-2, appear to have redundant but essential role(s) during development. To gain insights into the physiological and possibly pathophysiological functions of APP, we used a functional proteomic approach to identify proteins that interact with the highly conserved C-terminal region of APP family proteins. Previously, we characterized an interaction between APP and ubiquitous mitochondrial creatine kinase. Here, we describe an interaction between APP and a novel protein, 4-nitrophenylphosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like protein homolog 1 (NIPSNAP1). The interaction between APP and NIPSNAP1 was confirmed both in transiently transfected COS7 cells and in the mouse brain, where NIPSNAP1 is expressed at a high level. We demonstrate that NIPSNAP1 is targeted to the mitochondria via its N-terminal targeting sequence, and interacts with mitochondrial chaperone translocase of the outer membrane 22. Mitochondrial localization of NIPSNAP1 appears to be critical for its interaction with APP, and overexpression of APP appeared to disrupt NIPSNAP1 mitochondrial localization. Moreover, APP overexpression resulted in downregulation of NIPSNAP1 levels in cultured cells. Our data suggest that APP may affect mitochondrial function through a direct interaction with NIPSNAP1 as well as with other mitochondrial proteins. [source]


    Targeting leukocyte trafficking to inflamed skin , still an attractive therapeutic approach?

    Abstract:, Research into leukocyte trafficking and its therapeutic exploitation appears to be a multistep process, just like the trafficking cascade itself. The initial euphoria evoked by an early understanding of the trafficking steps was followed by considerable disappointment following the clinical failure of the first selectin antagonist Cylexin (CY-1503), a sialyl LewisX mimetic. The research area recovered and identified additional attractive pharmacological targets such as chemokine receptors and integrins. However, after lack of efficacy in anti-chemokine trials and the fatalities associated with anti VLA-4 therapy (Tysabri), the question arose again whether targeting leukocyte trafficking is really promising or whether such a complex, multistep process with many redundant and/or functionally overlapping molecules is simply too challenging to deal with. In this article, we delineate some pros and cons of this approach followed by a brief update on where we stand in the field and where we might move in the future. [source]


    Non-enzymatic developmental functions of acetylcholinesterase , the question of redundancy

    Despite in vitro demonstrations of non-enzymatic morphogenetic functions in acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the AChE knockout phenotype is milder than might be expected, casting doubt upon the relevance of such functions in vivo. Functional redundancy is a possible explanation. Using in vitro findings that AChE is able to bind to laminin-111, together with detailed information about the interaction sites, as well as an epitope analysis of adhesion-inhibiting anti-AChE mAbs, we have used molecular docking and bioinformatics techniques to explore this idea, investigating structurally similar molecules that have a comparable spatiotemporal expression pattern in the embryonic nervous system. On this basis, molecules with which AChE could be redundant are the syndecans, glypicans, perlecan, the receptor tyrosine kinase Mer, and the low-density lipoprotein receptor. It is also highly likely that AChE may be redundant with the homologous neuroligins, although there is no evidence that the latter are expressed before synaptogenesis. AChE was observed to dock with Gas6, the ligand for Mer, as well as with apolipoprotein E3 (but not apolipoprotein E4), both at the same site as the laminin interaction. These findings suggest that AChE may show direct functional redundancy with one or more of these molecules; it is also possible that it may itself have a unique function in the stabilization of the basement membrane. As basement membrane molecules are characterized by multiple molecular interactions, each contributing cumulatively to the construction and stability of the network, this may account for AChE's apparently promiscuous interactions, and also for the survival of the knockout.     Do woodlice and earthworms interact synergistically in leaf litter decomposition?

    Summary 1In laboratory microcosms, we investigated the influence of diversity of both leaf litter and detritivores on decomposition processes. Either woodlice or earthworms, or a combination of woodlice and earthworms, fed on leaf litter of either oak or alder, or oak and alder for 8 weeks. Mass loss of leaf litter, soil microbial respiration and soil nutrient concentrations were determined every 2 weeks. 2For four out of seven decomposition parameters, the joint effects of woodlice and earthworms were stronger than the sum of single-species effects when they had fed on alder litter. When feeding on oak litter, however, woodlice and earthworms together revealed lower decomposition rates than predicted from their single effects. Joint effects of detritivores on decomposition of mixed litter were always lower than predicted from the sum of their effects. 3In mixed-litter assays, we obtained intermediate values of decomposition parameters, indicating that doubling the species richness of leaf litter from one to two species did not promote decomposition processes. Effects of mixing litter were, thus, mostly additive; essentially only when earthworms fed on mixed litter we observed, mostly positive, non-additive effects of diverse litter. 4Our findings provide evidence for a potential effect on ecosystem functioning through joint action of detritivores even at low species diversity, while litter diversity seems to be less significant. On high-quality litter, isopods and earthworms are not functionally redundant but act synergistically on litter decomposition. The effects of detritivore diversity on ecosystem processes, however, are context-specific and depend on the quality and diversity of the available food sources, and on species-specific characteristics of the detritivores.     Functional overlap between RecA and MgsA (RarA) in the rescue of stalled replication forks in Escherichia coli

    Escherichia coli RecA protein plays a role in DNA homologous recombination, recombination repair, and the rescue of stalled or collapsed replication forks. The mgsA (rarA) gene encodes a highly conserved DNA-dependent ATPase, whose yeast orthologue, MGS1, plays a role in maintaining genomic stability. In this study, we show a functional relationship between mgsA and recA during DNA replication. The mgsA recA double mutant grows more slowly and has lower viability than a recA single mutant, but they are equally sensitive to UV-induced DNA damage. Mutations in mgsA and recA cause lethality in DNA polymerase I deficient cells, and suppress the temperature-dependent growth defect of dnaE486 (Pol III ,-catalytic subunit). Moreover, recAS25P, a novel recA allele identified in this work, does not complement the slow growth of ,mgsA ,recA cells or the lethality of polA12 ,recA, but is proficient in DNA repair, homologous recombination, SOS mutagenesis and SOS induction. These results suggest that RecA and MgsA are functionally redundant in rescuing stalled replication forks, and that the DNA repair and homologous recombination functions of RecA are separated from its function to maintain progression of replication fork.     "The probable industrial origin of archaeological daub at an Iron Age site in northeast Thailand" (Parr and Boyd, 2002): A comment on the inappropriate application of geophysical and geochemical techniques to an archaeological question

    Parr and Boyd (2002) used colorimetric analysis in combination with geophysical and geochemical techniques to estimate firing temperatures for archaeological daub from an Iron Age site in Thailand. They suggest that the daub was fired at high temperatures and, therefore, is indicative of kiln utilization and increased industrialization during that period in Thailand. They argue that the adoption of a multimethod analytical approach in which the combination of data derived from ICP-MS, X-ray diffraction, and magnetic susceptibility analyses of daub samples, coupled with microscopic and macroscopic examination of samples, enhances the accuracy of their interpretations. While they should be commended for attempting to substantiate their claims using many geophysical and geochemical techniques, their arguments are flawed by the misapplication of the techniques described and/or over-interpretation of the data generated by such techniques. Therefore, Parr and Boyd's (2002:285) point about methodology ("that the combined interpretation of independent measures provides a better estimate of the original firing temperatures of the archaeological material than has hitherto been possible") is made redundant by the lack of scientific rigor applied to the independent measures used for this study. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the longbow was rendered redundant as a weapon of war by technological developments such as the musket. Yet at the end of the eighteenth century, archery was revived as a fashionable pastime amongst the English aristocracy thanks to a nostalgic taste for the gothic and medieval. Archery societies were set up across the country, each with its own strict entry criteria, outlandish costumes and extravagant dinners. In a period that saw the making of the modern British upper class, as landowners became more powerful, more unified and more status-conscious, archery societies were havens of exclusivity and a way of reinforcing and reassuring one's own position in society.     Nuclear power plant communications in normative and actual practice: A field study of control room operators' communications

    The safety and availability of sociotechnical critical systems still relies on human operators, both through human reliability and human ability to handle adequately unexpected events. In this article, the authors focus on ergonomic field studies of nuclear power plant control room operator activities, and more specifically on the analysis of communications within control room crews. They show how operators use vague and porous verbal exchanges to produce continuous, redundant, and diverse interactions to successfully construct and maintain individual and mutual awareness, which is paramount to achieve system stability and safety. Such continuous interactions enable the operators to prevent, detect, and reverse system errors or flaws by anticipation or regulation.     States, Social Policies and Globalisations Arguing on the Right Terrain?

    Summaries The debate about future social policies in OECD countries is framed in the light of rich country concerns, notably of a ,welfare state at risk'. Because globalisation processes can plausibly be presented as a major source of threat, there is a temptation to generalise the analysis globally, and to assume that social policy issues in poor countries are fundamentally the same as in OECD states. The debate about the future of social policy in poor countries should not be framed in terms of OECD concerns. Three more specific points underpin this general argument: (a) Economic globalisation is not necessarily a threat. There are good historical reasons for believing that it may create political pressures to extend as well as to shrink social provision in poor countries; (b) There is a fundamental problem of state incapacity in much of the poor world that makes many OECD-based arguments about the proper role of the state appear redundant. Greater state capacity will itself lead to more effective social policies; and (c) It makes little sense for poor countries to resist, on grounds of potential adverse impacts on social policy, the trends toward the adoption of either New Public Management practices or the broader shift from ,positive' to regulatory states. Whatever changes occur in the architecture of poor states, more effective regulation will remain an urgent need. [source]


    Inherited disorders of human Toll-like receptor signaling: immunological implications

    Summary:,In vitro nine of 10 known human Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are engaged by well-defined chemical agonists that mimic microbial compounds, raising the possibility that human TLRs play a critical role in protective immunity in vivo. We thus review here the recently described human primary immunodeficiencies caused by germline mutations in genes encoding molecules involved in cell signaling downstream from TLRs. Subjects with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with immunodeficiency (EDA-ID) carry either X-linked recessive hypomorphic mutations in NEMO or autosomal dominant hypermorphic mutations in IKBA. Their cells show a broad defect in nuclear factor-,B (NF-,B) activation, with an impaired, but not abolished response to a large variety of stimuli including TLR agonists. EDA-ID patients show developmental anomalies of skin appendages and a broad spectrum of infectious diseases. Patients with autosomal recessive amorphic mutations in IRAK4 present a purely immunological syndrome and more restricted defects, with specific impairment of the Toll and interleukin-1 receptor (TIR),interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase (IRAK) signaling pathway. In these subjects, the NF-,B- and mitogen-activated protein kinase-mediated induction of inflammatory cytokines in response to TIR agonists is impaired. The patients present a narrow range of pyogenic bacterial infections that become increasingly rare with age. Altogether, these data suggest that human TLRs play a critical role in host defense. However, they do not provide compelling evidence, as even the infectious phenotype of patients with mutations in IRAK4 may result from impaired signaling via receptors other than TLRs. Paradoxically, these experiments of nature raise the possibility that the entire set of human TLRs is largely redundant in protective immunity in vivo. [source]


    Manual superscaffolding of honey bee (Apis mellifera) chromosomes 12,16: implications for the draft genome assembly version 4, gene annotation, and chromosome structure

    Abstract The euchromatic arms of the five smallest telocentric chromosomes in the honey bee genome draft Assembly v4 were manually connected into superscaffolds. This effort reduced chromosomes 12,16 from 30, 21, 25, 42, and 21 mapped scaffolds to five, four, five, six, and five superscaffolds, respectively, and incorporated 178 unmapped contigs and scaffolds totalling 2.6 Mb, a 6.4% increase in length. The superscaffolds extend from the genetically mapped location of the centromere to their identified distal telomeres on the long arms. Only two major misassemblies of 146 kb and 65 kb sections were identified in this 23% of the mapped assembly. Nine duplicate gene models on chromosomes 15 and 16 were made redundant, while another 15 gene models were improved, most spectacularly the MAD (MAX dimerization protein) gene which extends across 11 scaffolds for at least 400 kb.     Wrapped input selection using multilayer perceptrons for repeat-purchase modeling in direct marketing

    In this paper, we try to validate existing theory on and develop additional insight into repeat-purchase behavior in a direct marketing setting by means of an illuminating case study. The case involves the detection and qualification of the most relevant RFM (Recency, Frequency and Monetary) variables, using a neural network wrapper as our input pruning method. Results indicate that elimination of redundant and/or irrelevant inputs by means of the discussed input selection method allows us to significantly reduce model complexity without degrading the predictive generalization ability. It is precisely this issue that will enable us to infer some interesting marketing conclusions concerning the relative importance of the RFM predictor categories and their operationalizations. The empirical findings highlight the importance of a combined use of RFM variables in predicting repeat-purchase behavior. However, the study also reveals the dominant role of the frequency category. Results indicate that a model including only frequency variables still yields satisfactory classification accuracy compared to the optimally reduced model. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     Redundant wavelet processing on the half-axis with applications to signal denoising with small delays: theory and experiments

    Abstract A wavelet transform on the negative half real axis is developed using an average-interpolation scheme. This transform is redundant and can be used to perform causal wavelet processing, such as on-line signal denoising, without delay. Nonetheless, in practice some boundary effects occur and thus a small amount of delay is required to reduce them. The effect of this delay is studied using a numerical example of a signal with large noise and sharp transients. It is shown that the delay required to obtain acceptable denoising levels is decreased by using the proposed redundant transform instead of a non-redundant one. We also present results from the experimental implementation of the proposed algorithm for the denoising of a feedback signal during the control of a three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous brushless DC motor.     Interactive knowledge management for agent-assisted web navigation

    Web information may currently be acquired by activating search engines. However, our daily experience is not only that web pages are often either redundant or missing but also that there is a mismatch between information needs and the web's responses. If we wish to satisfy more complex requests, we need to extract part of the information and transform it into new interactive knowledge. This transformation may either be performed by hand or automatically. In this article we describe an experimental agent-based framework skilled to help the user both in managing achieved information and in personalizing web searching activity. The first process is supported by a query-formulation facility and by a friendly structured representation of the searching results. On the other hand, the system provides a proactive support to the searching on the web by suggesting pages, which are selected according to the user's behavior shown in his navigation activity. A basic role is played by an extension of a classical fuzzy-clustering algorithm that provides a prototype-based representation of the knowledge extracted from the web. These prototypes lead both the proactive suggestion of new pages, mined through web spidering, and the structured representation of the searching results. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     A Kharitonov-like theorem for robust stability independent of delay of interval quasipolynomials

    Abstract In this paper, a Kharitonov-like theorem is proved for testing robust stability independent of delay of interval quasipolynomials, p(s)+,eqk(s), where p and qk's are interval polynomials with uncertain coefficients. It is shown that the robust stability test of the quasipolynomial basically reduces to the stability test of a set of Kharitonov-like vertex quasipolynomials, where stability is interpreted as stability independent of delay. As discovered in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234), the well-known vertex-type robust stability result reported in (IMA J. Math. Contr. Info. 1988; 5:117,123) (See also (IEEE Trans. Circ. Syst. 1990; 37(7):969,972; Proc. 34th IEEE Conf. Decision Contr., New Orleans, LA, December 1995; 392,394) does contain a flaw. An alternative approach is proposed in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234), and both frequency sweeping and vertex type robust stability tests are developed for quasipolynomials with polytopic coefficient uncertainties. Under a specific assumption, it is shown in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234) that robust stability independent of delay of an interval quasipolynomial can be reduced to stability independent of delay of a set of Kharitonov-like vertex quasipolynomials. In this paper, we show that the assumption made in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234) is redundant, and the Kharitonov-like result reported in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234) is true without any additional assumption, and can be applied to all quasipolynomials. The key idea used in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234) was the equivalence of Hurwitz stability and , -o -stability for interval polynomials with constant term never equal to zero. This simple observation implies that the well-known Kharitonov theorem for Hurwitz stability can be applied for , -o -stability, provided that the constant term of the interval polynomial never vanishes. However, this line of approach is based on a specific assumption, which we call the CNF-assumption. In this paper, we follow a different approach: First, robust , -o -stability problem is studied in a more general framework, including the cases where degree drop is allowed, and the constant term as well as other higher-orders terms can vanish. Then, generalized Kharitonov-like theorems are proved for , -o -stability, and inspired by the techniques used in (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 2008; 53:1219,1234), it is shown that robust stability independent of delay of an interval quasipolynomial can be reduced to stability independent of delay of a set of Kharitonov-like vertex quasipolynomials, even if the assumption adopted in (IEEE Trans.     Development of redundant rigidity theory for formation control

    Abstract Multiagent formation control may proceed by ensuring that designated pairs of agents maintain a specified distance between each other, in order that the overall shape of the formation can be preserved while it translates or rotates. A minimally rigid formation is one in which loss of any one such constraint or link means that individual agent motions can occur, which do not preserve the shape of the formation. Recognizing that real-world formations may suffer link loss and even agent loss, this paper presents a systematic approach to defining a measure for redundant or nonminimal rigidity, which is the property that formation shape will still be preserved in the face of loss of a certain designated number of distance constraints or formation agents. Most of the results are concerned with advancing a deterministic measure, but this paper also indicates circumstances under which a statistical measure may be relevant.     Reduction constraints for the global optimization of NLPs

    Abstract Convergence of branch-and-bound algorithms for the solution of NLPs is obtained by finding ever-nearer lower and upper bounds to the objective function. The lower bound is calculated by constructing a convex relaxation of the NLP. Reduction constraints are new linear problem constraints which are (a) linearly independent from the existing constraints; (b) redundant with reference to the original NLP formulation; (c) not redundant with reference to its convex relaxation. Thus, they can be successfully employed to reduce the feasible region of the convex relaxation without cutting the feasible region of the original NLP. [source]
