Selected AbstractsCorporate Governance and Financial Constraints on Strategic Turnarounds*JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES, Issue 3 2006Igor Filatotchev abstract The paper extends the Robbins and Pearce (1992) two-stage turnaround response model to include governance factors. In addition to retrenchment and recovery, the paper proposes the addition of a realignment stage, referring specifically to the realignment of expectations of principal and agent groups. The realignment stage imposes a threshold that must be crossed before the retrenchment and hence recovery stage can be entered. Crossing this threshold is problematic to the extent that the interests of governance-stakeholder groups diverge in a crisis situation. The severity of the crisis impacts on the bases of strategy contingent asset valuation leading to the fragmentation of stakeholder interests. In some cases the consequence may be that management are prevented from carrying out turnarounds by governance constraints. The paper uses a case study to illustrate these dynamics, and like the Robbins and Pearce study, it focuses on the textile industry. A longitudinal approach is used to show the impact of the removal of governance constraints. The empirical evidence suggests that such financial constraints become less serious to the extent that there is a functioning market for corporate control. Building on governance research and turnaround literature, the paper also outlines the general case necessary and sufficient conditions for successful turnarounds. [source] Potential Role of Enhanced Cytokinemia and Plasma Inhibitor on the Decreased Activity of Plasma ADAMTS13 in Patients With Alcoholic Hepatitis: Relationship to EndotoxemiaALCOHOLISM, Issue 2010Masatoshi Ishikawa Background:, Deficiency of ADAMTS13 (adisintegrin-like and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type-1 motifs 13) results in an increase in unusually large von Willebrand factor multimer (UL-VWFM) of the plasma and finally causes microcirculatory disturbance. Our previous study demonstrated that the imbalance of increased UL-VWFM over decreased ADAMTS13 activity may contribute to the development of multiorgan failure in patients with alcoholic hepatitis (AH). The aim of this study was to explore the potential mechanism to reduce the activity of plasma ADAMTS13. Methods:, Plasma cytokine levels including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-, (TNF-,), plasma endotoxin concentration, and the plasma inhibitor against ADAMTS13 were determined together with ADAMTS13 activity, VWF antigen (VWF:Ag), and UL-VWFM in 24 patients with AH and 5 patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH). Results:, The concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-, on admission were significantly higher in patients with SAH than in those with AH and controls. The ADAMTS13 activity concomitantly decreased, and the VWF:Ag progressively elevated with increasing concentrations of these cytokines from normal range to over 100 pg/ml. Plasma endotoxin concentration was markedly higher in patients with SAH (mean 52.3 pg/ml) and AH (21.7 pg/ml) than in controls (7.9 pg/ml). The endotoxin concentration inversely correlated with ADAMTS13 activity and was higher in patients with UL-VWFM than those without. The inhibitor was detected in 4 patients with SAH (0.9 to 2.1 BU/ml) and 6 patients with AH (0.5 to 1.6 BU/ml). Patients with the inhibitor showed lower functional liver capacity, higher endotoxin concentration, and marked inflammatory signs than those without. At the recovery stage, the ADAMTS13 activity increased to normal range, the VWF:Ag decreased, and the UL-VWFM disappeared with the decrease in the concentrations of cytokines and endotoxin, and the disappearance of the inhibitor. Conclusion:, Decreased ADAMTS13 activity and increased VWF:Ag could be induced not only by pro-inflammatory cytokinemia, but also by its inhibitor, both of which may be closely related to enhanced endotoxemia in patients with AH and SAH. Charles Despite efforts at managing crises, they tenaciously occur at the most inopportune times. The crisis manager understands that the risk of a catastrophic failure never equals zero when the human species interacts with nature or man-made structures and processes. However, the role of responsible managers is to limit risk or at least to make a best effort in assuring that acceptable precautions are taken to reduce risk to an acceptable level. In this case study, the author discusses the elements of risk taking and the causes of error in a police firearms training environment. Also discussed are the goals of firearms training, and the impact of that training design on the firearms training environment which is put into perspective. The author looks at the mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery stages of crisis management as they relate to police firearms training. The author discusses precautions and how those precautions were violated in an established environment of safety, resulting in the accidental shooting in the gun-cleaning area. Also included are alternative safety measures designed to further negate the possibility of a recurrence of such an accident. [source] Urination assessment after the removal of bladder catheter using a novel urination chartNURSING & HEALTH SCIENCES, Issue 3 2003Tomoko Owan rn, phd Abstract We investigated the difficulties involved in assessing post prostatectomy voiding according to 20 nurses working in urology and dermatology wards. Problems they encountered included completing a urination (frequency/volume) chart and performing an assessment. We constructed a hourly urination chart for basic nursing education in urinary incontinence. This was used for a 76-year-old male patient with hypertension and diabetes mellitus who underwent a prostatectomy. Urination was recorded for 17 consecutive days after catheter removal. Detailed pathological findings were more distinct in the hourly rather than daily recordings of voluntary micturition. Voluntary micturition appeared 12 h after catheter removal, but it was very scanty. After the onset of urination, frequency and amount of daily voluntary micturition was inversely related to incontinence during the 17 days after catheter removal. We drafted a set of urination recovery stages to enable the analysis of a patient's urination status. Nurses understood its importance and were able to reach a consensus on how to manage patients with postoperative incontinence. We have constructed a practical system for use by specialist urology nurses. Garnett Hurricane Katrina was as much a communication disaster as it was a natural and bureaucratic disaster. Communication gaps, missed signals, information technology failures, administrative buffering, turf battles, and deliberate and unintentional misinterpretations delayed and handicapped both the recognition of the crisis that Katrina posed and the response to its devastation. This essay views crisis communication through four conceptual lenses: (1) crisis communication as interpersonal influence, (2) crisis communication as media relations, (3) crisis communication as technology showcase, and (4) crisis communication as interorganizational networking. A conceptual framework is presented that compares these lenses with regard to agency, transparency, technology, and chronology. The planning, response, and recovery stages of the Hurricane Katrina disaster are viewed through these communication conceptual lenses, illustrating key facets of each perspective and adding to our deepening understanding of the events. Many of the problems we have identified can be categorized as "information gaps",or at least problems with information-related implications, or failures to act decisively because information was sketchy at best. Better information would have been an optimal weapon against Katrina. Information sent to the right people at the right place at the right time. Information moved within agencies, across departments, and between jurisdictions of government as well. Seamlessly. Securely. Efficiently , One would think we could share information by now. [source] Contrasting Functional Performance of Juvenile Salmon Habitat in Recovering Wetlands of the Salmon River Estuary, Oregon, U.S.A.RESTORATION ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2002Ayesha Gray Abstract For an estuarine restoration project to be successful it must reverse anthropogenic effects and restore lost ecosystem functions. Restoration projects that aim to rehabilitate endangered species populations make project success even more important, because if misjudged damage to already weakened populations may result. Determining project success depends on our ability to assess the functional state or "performance" and the trajectory of ecosystem development. Mature system structure is often the desired "end point" of restoration and is assumed to provide maximum benefit for target species; however, few studies have measured linkages between structure and function and possible benefits available from early recovery stages. The Salmon River estuary, Oregon, U.S.A., offers a unique opportunity to simultaneously evaluate several estuarine restoration projects and the response of the marsh community while making comparisons with a concurring undiked portion of the estuary. Dikes installed in three locations in the estuary during the early 1960s were removed in 1978, 1987, and 1996, creating a "space-for-time substitution" chronosequence. Analysis of the marsh community responses enables us to use the development state of the three recovering marshes to determine a trajectory of estuarine recovery over 23 years and to make comparisons with a reference marsh. We assessed the rate and pattern of juvenile salmon habitat development in terms of fish density, available prey resources, and diet composition of wild juvenile Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (chinook salmon). Results from the outmigration of 1998 and 1999 show differences in fish densities, prey resources, and diet composition among the four sites. Peaks in chinook salmon densities were greatest in the reference site in 1998 and in the youngest (1996) site in 1999. The 1996 marsh had higher densities of chironomids (insects; average 864/m2) and lower densities of amphipods (crustaceans; average 8/m3) when compared with the other sites. Fauna differences were reflected in the diets of juvenile chinook with those occupying the 1978 and 1996 marshes based on insects (especially chironomids), whereas those from the 1987 and reference marshes were based on crustaceans (especially amphipods). Tracking the development of recovering emergent marsh ecosystems in the Salmon River estuary reveals significant fish and invertebrate response in the first 2 to 3 years after marsh restoration. This pulse of productivity in newly restored systems is part of the trajectory of development and indicates some level of early functionality and the efficacy of restoring estuarine marshes for juvenile salmon habitat. However, to truly know the benefits consumers experience in recovering systems requires further analysis that we will present in forthcoming publications. [source] Rapid whole monoclonal antibody analysis by mass spectrometry: An Ultra scale-down study of the effect of harvesting by centrifugation on the post-translational modification profile,BIOTECHNOLOGY & BIOENGINEERING, Issue 1 2010C.Q. Reid Abstract With the trend towards the generation and production of increasing numbers of complex biopharmaceutical (protein based) products, there is an increased need and requirement to characterize both the product and production process in terms of robustness and reproducibility. This is of particular importance for products from mammalian cell culture which have large molecular structures and more often than not complex post-translational modifications (PTMs) that can impact the efficacy, stability and ultimately the safety of the final product. It is therefore vital to understand how the operating conditions of a bioprocess affect the distribution and make up of these PTMs to ensure a consistent quality and activity in the final product. Here we have characterized a typical bioprocess and determined (a) how the time of harvest from a mammalian cell culture and, (b) through the use of an ultra scale-down mimic how the nature of the primary recovery stages, affect the distribution and make up of the PTMs observed on a recombinant IgG4 monoclonal antibody. In particular we describe the use of rapid whole antibody analysis by mass spectrometry to analyze simultaneously the changes that occur to the cleavage of heavy chain C-terminal lysine residues and the glycosylation pattern, as well as the presence of HL dimers. The time of harvest was found to have a large impact upon the range of glycosylation patterns observed, but not upon C-terminal lysine cleavage. The culture age had a profound impact on the ratio of different glycan moieties found on antibody molecules. The proportion of short glycans increased (e.g., (G0F)2 20,35%), with an associated decrease in the proportion of long glycans with culture age (e.g., (G2F)2 7,4%, and G1F/G2F from 15.2% to 7.8%). Ultra scale-down mimics showed that subsequent processing of these cultures did not change the post-translational modifications investigated, but did increase the proportion of half antibodies present in the process stream. The combination of ultra scale-down methodology and whole antibody analysis by mass spectrometry has demonstrated that the effects of processing on the detailed molecular structure of a monoclonal antibody can be rapidly determined early in the development process. In this study we have demonstrated this analysis to be applicable to critical process design decisions (e.g., time of harvest) in terms of achieving a desired molecular structure, but this approach could also be applied as a selection criterion as to the suitability of a platform process for the preparation of a new drug candidate. Also the methodology provides means for bioprocess engineers to predict at the discovery phase how a bioprocess will impact upon the quality of the final product. Biotechnol.
