Selected AbstractsUremic pruritus: A reviewHEMODIALYSIS INTERNATIONAL, Issue 2 2005Jocemir R. Lugon Abstract Pruritus is a major disorder among the skin derangements in advanced renal failure. Its prevalence seems to be diminishing perhaps because of improvements in dialysis treatment. Recent information suggests that interactions between dermal mast cells and distal ends of nonmyelinated C fibers may be important in the precipitation and regulation of the sensory stimuli. The knowledge as to the control of pruritus transmission to cortex areas is still incomplete but endogenous opioid and opioid receptors may have a role in this regard. A recent classification was proposed for pruritus based on the level of its origin. Uremic pruritus, however, seems to be too complex to fit perfectly in any of the suggested modalities. Inflammation and malnutrition are recognized risk factors for cardiovascular death in end-stage renal disease patients, which may be related to the genesis of pruritus. Consistent with this concept, lower serum levels of albumin and higher serum levels of ferritin were found in pruritic patients when compared to nonpruritic ones. Newer treatments for this difficult clinical problem are being developed and tested. [source] Pathological and molecular biological aspects of the renal epithelial neoplasms, up-to-datePATHOLOGY INTERNATIONAL, Issue 6 2004Yoji Nagashima Renal neoplasms are not necessarily high in frequency, but they are characteristic in their heterogeneity and occasional association with systemic familial tumor syndromes and phacomatoses (e.g. clear cell renal cell carcinoma and von Hippel-Lindau disease, Wilms tumor and aniridia, genitourinary malformation and mental retardation (so-called, WAGR syndrome), and angiomyolipoma and tuberous sclerosis). Physicians and pathologists should take note of these syndromes and associated renal neoplasms because they have provided important clues to elucidate the mechanism of tumorigenesis concerning cancer-suppressor genes. This review aims to present recent classification of renal parenchymal neoplasms based on their molecular biological characteristics, and future problems yet to be clarified. [source] Genetic variation of chloroplast DNA in Zingiberaceae taxa from Myanmar assessed by PCR,restriction fragment length polymorphism analysisANNALS OF APPLIED BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2009D. Ahmad Abstract We examined genetic variation in 22 accessions belonging to 11 species in four genera of the Zingiberaceae, mainly from Myanmar, by PCR,restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis to investigate their relationships within this family. Two of 10 chloroplast gene regions (trnS-trnfM and trnK2,trnQr) showed differential PCR amplification across the taxa. Restriction enzyme digestion of the PCR products revealed interspecific variability. The restriction patterns were used to classify the regions as either highly conserved or variable across the taxa. None of the regions was highly conserved across the four genera, and the level of conservation varied. The gene region trnS-trnfM appeared to display interspecific variability among most of the species. However, the relative efficiency of different restriction enzymes depended on the gene regions and genera investigated. Cluster analysis revealed interspecific discrimination among the taxa. The two Curcuma species (Curcuma zedoaria and Curcuma xanthorrhiza) appeared to be identical, thus supporting their recent classification as synonyms. The results provide the basis for selecting specific combinations of restriction enzymes and gene regions of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) to identify interspecific variation in the Zingiberaceae and to identify both highly conserved and variable regions. Overall, cpDNA depicted comparatively diverse genetic profile of the studied germplasm. The genetic information revealed here can be applied to the conservation and future breeding of Zingiber and Curcuma species. [source] Molecular phylogeny of Calyptratae (Diptera: Brachycera): the evolution of 18S and 16S ribosomal rDNAs in higher dipterans and their use in phylogenetic inferenceINSECT MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, Issue 5 2001X. Nirmala Abstract Sequences for nearly complete 18S rRNA and partial 16S rRNA genes were determined for sixteen species representing twelve calyptrate families. Two unique insertions are present in expansion regions of the 18S rDNA in nycteribiids. Alignments containing other dipteran rRNA genes provided good resolution at higher taxonomic level: monophyly of Calyptratae is well supported. While both 16S and 18S rDNA matrices produce unstable topologies within Calyptratae when analysed separately, their combination results in a tree with several robust and well supported nodes. Of three superfamilies recognized in recent classifications, the Hippoboscoidea is well supported by 16S rDNA and by combined matrices. The representatives of Muscoidea, Musca sp. and Antipoda sp., display a tendency to cluster within Oestroidea. The comparison of secondary structures of two variable regions indicates that Sarcophagidae are related to Calliphoridae rather than to Tachinidae. Enright Over the past decade, a number of researchers have proposed a separate DSM category for complicated grief. Recently, there have been attempts to determine empirically the number and nature of variables comprising the complicated-grief syndrome. The present research addresses one such procedure for defining these variables. Combining a past methodology that demonstrated the relative utility of one classification of complicated grief (Worden, 1991) with dimensional concepts derived from other classifications, the present research concludes that a relatively small number of variables account for the concept. These findings are discussed not only in terms of previous research on Worden's categorization and more recent classifications, but, more importantly, in terms of the more global theoretical and methodological issues surrounding the definition(s) of complicated grief. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
