KALLIMANIS patrón espacial de perturbación; simulaciones espacialmente explícitas; SLOSS; umbral de extinción Abstract:,Recent extinction models generally show that spatial aggregation of habitat reduces overall extinction risk because sites emptied by local extinction are more rapidly recolonized. We extended such an investigation to include spatial structure in the disturbance regime. A spatially explicit metapopulation model was developed with a wide range of dispersal distances. The degree of aggregation of both habitat and disturbance pattern could be varied from a random distribution, through the intermediate case of a fractal distribution, all the way to complete aggregation (single block). Increasing spatial aggregation of disturbance generally increased extinction risk. The relative risk faced by populations in different landscapes varied greatly, depending on the disturbance regime. With random disturbance, the spatial aggregation of habitat reduced extinction risk, as in earlier studies. Where disturbance was spatially autocorrelated, however, this advantage was eliminated or reversed because populations in aggregated habitats are at risk of mass extinction from coarse-scale disturbance events. The effects of spatial patterns on extinction risk tended to be reduced by long-distance dispersal. Given the high levels of spatial correlation in natural and anthropogenic disturbance processes, population vulnerability may be greatly underestimated both by classical (nonspatial) models and by those that consider spatial structure in habitat alone. [source] Evaluating reserves for species richness and representation in northern CaliforniaDIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTIONS, Issue 4 2006Jeffrey R. Dunk ABSTRACT The Klamath-Siskiyou forests of northern California and southern Oregon are recognized as an area of globally outstanding biological distinctiveness. When evaluated at a national or global level, this region is often, necessarily, considered to be uniformly diverse. Due to large variation in biotic and abiotic variables throughout this region, however, it is unlikely that biological diversity is uniformly distributed. Furthermore, land management decisions nearly always occur at spatial scales smaller than this entire region. Therefore, we used field data from a random sampling design to map the distribution of local and regional richness of terrestrial molluscs and salamanders within northern California's portion of the Klamath-Siskiyou region. We also evaluated the protection afforded by reserves established for varying reasons (e.g. for inspiration and recreation for people vs. species conservation) to hotspots of species richness and species representation of these taxa. No existing reserves were created with these taxa in mind, yet it was assumed that reserves established largely around considerations for the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) would afford adequate protection for many lesser-known species. Species of terrestrial molluscs and salamanders share two general features: (1) they have extremely low vagility, and (2) they are often associated with moist, cool microclimates. Existing reserves disproportionately included areas of hotspots of species richness for both taxa, when hotspots included the richest c. 25% of the area, whereas non-reserved lands contained greater than expected areas with lower species richness. However, when a more strict definition of hotspot was used (i.e. the richest c.10% of areas), local hotspots for both taxa were not disproportionately found in reserves. Reserves set aside largely for human aesthetics and recreation and those set aside for biodiversity both contributed to the protection of areas with high (greatest 25%) species richness. Existing biodiversity reserves represented 68% of mollusc species and 73% of salamander species, corresponding to the 99th and 93rd percentiles, respectively, of species representation achieved by simulating a random distribution of the same total area of reservation. Cumulatively, however, reserves set aside for inspiration and biodiversity represented 83% of mollusc species and 91% of salamander species. The existing reserves provide conservation value for terrestrial molluscs and salamanders. This reserve network, however, should not be considered optimal for either taxa. [source] Random controls on semi-rhythmic spacing of pools and riffles in constriction-dominated riversEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 11 2001Douglas M. Thompson Abstract Average pool spacing between five and seven bankfull widths has been documented in environments throughout the world, but has limited theoretical justification in coarse-bedded and bedrock environments. Pool formation in coarse-bedded and bedrock channels has been attributed to bedrock and boulder constrictions. Because the spacing of these constrictions may be irregular in nature, it is difficult to reconcile pool-formation processes with the supposedly rhythmic spacing of pools and riffles. To address these issues, a simulation model for pool and riffle formation is used to demonstrate that semi-rhythmic spacing of pools with an approximate spacing of five to seven bankfull widths can be recreated from a random distribution of obstructions and minimum pool- and riffle-length criteria. It is assumed that a pool,riffle couplet will achieve a minimum length based on dominant-discharge conditions. Values for the minimum-length assumption are based on field data collected in New England and California, while the theoretical basis relies on the demonstrated hydraulic response of individual pools to elongation. Results from the simulations show that the location of pools can be primarily random in character, but still assume an average spacing between four and eight bankfull widths for a variety of conditions. Field verification data generally support the model but highlight a highly skewed distribution of pool-forming elements and pool spacing. The relation between pool spacing and bankfull widths is attributed to the common geometric response of these features to dominant-discharge conditions. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Metacommunity patterns of highly diverse stream midges: gradients, chequerboards, and nestedness, or is there only randomness?ECOLOGICAL ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 5 2005Jani Heino Abstract., 1.,Several non-random patterns in the distribution of species have been observed, including Clementsian gradients, Gleasonian gradients, nestedness, chequerboards, and evenly spaced gradients. Few studies have examined these patterns simultaneously, although they have often been studied in isolation and contrasted with random distribution of species across sites. 2.,This study examined whether assemblages of chironomid midges exhibit any of the idealised distribution patterns as opposed to random distribution of species across sites within the metacommunity context in a boreal drainage system. Analyses were based on stream surveys conducted during three consecutive years. Analytical approaches included ordinations, cluster analysis, null models, and associated randomisation methods. 3.,Midge assemblages did not conform to Clementsian gradients, which was evidenced by the absence of clearly definable assemblage types with numerous species exclusive to each assemblage type. Rather, there were signs of continuous Gleasonian variability of assemblage composition, as well as significant nested subset patterns of species distribution. 4.,Midge assemblages showed only weak relationships with any of the measured environmental variables, and even these weak environmental relationships varied among years. 5.,Midge assemblages did not appear to be structured by competition. This finding was somewhat problematic, however, because the two indices measuring co-occurrence provided rather different signs of distribution patterns. This was probably a consequence of how they actually measure co-occurrence. 6.,Although midge assemblages did not show a perfect match with any of the idealised distribution patterns, they nevertheless showed a resemblance to the empirical patterns found previously for several plant and animal groups. [source] Day,night changes in the spatial distribution and habitat preferences of freshwater shrimps, Gammarus pulex, in a stony streamFRESHWATER BIOLOGY, Issue 4 2005J. M. ELLIOTT Summary 1. As many invertebrates are nocturnal, their spatial distribution and habitat preferences may change from day to night. Both aspects are examined for Gammarus pulex by testing the hypotheses: (i) a power function was a suitable model for the spatial distribution of the shrimps in both day and night; (ii) diurnal and nocturnal spatial distributions were significantly different; (iii) diurnal and nocturnal habitat preferences were significantly different. Five different life-stages were treated separately. To ensure that the conclusions were consistent, large samples were taken near midday and midnight in April, June and November over 4 years at two sites about 3 km apart in a stony stream: downstream (n = 30) and upstream (n = 50). 2. The first and second hypotheses were supported at both sites. A power function, relating spatial variance (s2) to mean (m), was an excellent fit in all analyses (P < 0.001, r2 > 0.91), i.e. the spatial variance was density-dependent. All five life-stages were aggregated in the day. At night, the degree of aggregation increased for juveniles at higher densities but decreased for juveniles at lower densities, increased for immature females and males, but decreased slightly for mature females and especially mature males, the latter being close to a random distribution. There were no significant differences between sites, in spite of the lower numbers at the downstream site. 3. The third hypothesis was tested at only the upstream site and supported by comparisons between shrimp densities and 13 physical variables (distance from bank, water depth, water velocity, ten particle size-classes), and three non-physical variables (dry weights of bryophytes, leaf material, organic detritus). During the day, densities were strongly related to particle sizes with the following preferences: 0.5,8 mm for juveniles, 8,256 mm for the other life-stages with a weaker relationship for males. There were no significant positive relationships with the other variables, apart from bryophytes for immature shrimps and adults. At night, densities were unrelated to particle size; juveniles and immature shrimps preferred low water velocities near the banks, often where leaf material and organic detritus accumulated, females often preferred medium water velocities slightly away from the banks, and males showed no habitat preferences. 4. Day samples do not provide a complete picture of habitat preferences and probably identify refuge habitats. Day,night changes in spatial distribution and habitat preferences are an essential part of the behavioural dynamics of the shrimps and should be investigated in other species. [source] Scattering of elastic waves in media with a random distribution of fluid-filled cavities: theory and numerical modellingGEOPHYSICAL JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL, Issue 3 2004Tae-Kyung Hong SUMMARY The propagation of elastic waves is modelled in media with a random distribution of fluid-filled circular cavities, which display high physical impedance in contrast to background media. Theoretical attenuation expressions for media with circular cavities, which may be filled with any material (e.g. vacuum, fluid, elastic materials), are formulated using an ensemble treatment for first-order transmitted waves. Numerical estimates of scattering attenuation rates agree with the theoretical results well. The scattering attenuations (Q,1) are proportional to the scale of cavities and the number density (,, number of cavities per area in a medium). The decrease of primary energy with the size of cavities does not result in the increase of coda energy owing to the increase of both purely backscattered waves from cavities and the trapped waves inside cavities. Scattering properties (e.g. scattering attenuation, coda energy, phase fluctuation of primary waves) in media with randomly distributed cavities are very different from those in stochastic random media. It appears that heterogeneities with high impedance in the earth may not be well represented with stochastic random heterogeneities. [source] Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical characterization of immortalized odontoblast MO6-G3INTERNATIONAL ENDODONTIC JOURNAL, Issue 6 2006C. Mesgouez Abstract Aim, To investigate an immortalized murine odontoblast cell line as a potential alternative for experimental studies on dentinogenesis. Methodology, The MO6-G3 cell line was investigated morphologically over 3, 7, 11 and 42 days of culture, using histochemical localization of dentine sialoprotein (DSP), alkaline phosphatase (AP), type I collagen and actin filaments, histoenzymatic staining and biochemical investigation of AP and finally, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Results, Scanning electron micrographs showed elongated cells. Accordingly, a polarized organization of odontoblasts was observed by transmission electron microscopy, identifying distinct subcellular compartments as described in vivo. The secretion apparatus, which includes cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus saccules and secretion vesicles and granules, was longitudinally organized in the supranuclear compartment ending distally in the secretory pole. A cellular process was observed. The investigation of the cytoskeleton network revealed that actin microfilaments were organized in parallel stress fibre oriented depending on the longitudinal axis of the cytoplasm. Immunofluorescent labelling showed a continuous expression of type I collagen, DSP and AP. A unipolar distribution characterized intracellular DSP immunoreactivity. Histoenzymology revealed AP active sites increasing from 3 to 11 days albeit with a moderate level of activity comparatively to the in vivo situation in dental cells. Conclusion, This cell line MO6-G3 not only showed the criteria of odontoblast phenotype as previously reported but also the characteristic morphodifferentiation pattern of polarized odontoblasts at the cellular level but with an apparent random distribution. [source] The amounts and deposition patterns of fibrin-type fibrinoid at the villous surface are altered in pregnancy at high altitudeJOURNAL OF ANATOMY, Issue 5 2002T. M. Mayhew In pregnancy at high altitude, there is preplacental (hypobaric) hypoxia and intrauterine fetal growth is restricted. Previous studies on placentas from Amerindian and nonindigenous women completing term pregnancies at low (LA; 400 m) and high (HA; 3600 m) altitudes in Bolivia showed that HA placentas had smaller surface areas of villi and smaller volumes of fibrin type fibrinoid (FTF). Recently we devised a stereological method for testing whether perivillous FTF (pFTF) is randomly distributed at the surface of villous trophoblast. Here the method is applied to test 2 experimental hypotheses: [1] deposition of pFTF is nonrandom regardless of altitude and [2] deposition patterns differ between altitudes. Uniform random samples of microscopical fields were drawn from Masson trichrome stained sections and intersection counts used to estimate the surface areas of, and patterns of pFTF on, 4 regions of trophoblast: nonsyncytial knots (nonSK), syncytial knots (SK), syncytial bridges (SB) and denudation sites (DEN). Absolute areas were compared by 2-way analyses of variance. Expected and observed distributions were compared by (2 and contingency table analyses. At LA the mean (SEM) volume of FTF was 8.4 (1.54) cm3 and villous surface area was 7.0 (0.43) m2. At HA FTF volume was reduced by about 50% (P < 0.01) and villous surface by 20% (P < 0.01). The surface composition of trophoblast in LA placentas was nonSK (91%), SK (5%) and SB and DEN (both less than 3%). Relative surfaces were not significantly altered in HA placentas but, due to the impoverished growth of villi at HA, the changes represented a real decline in absolute surface of nonSK. At HA, the total surface of pFTF on trophoblast decreased by about 40%, from 4430 (564) cm2,2570 (406) cm2 (P < 0.01). At both altitudes pFTF deposition was preferentially found at DEN (12-fold greater than expected for a random distribution). Pattern differences were detected between altitudes. In HA placentas the amount of pFTF deposited on nonSK regions was about 45% less (P < 0.05); apparent changes on SK and SB regions were not significant. These histometric findings suggest that the coagulation-fibrinolysis steady state is altered at HA and favours greater fibrinolysis. At least some of the fibrinolytic or anticoagulant activity seems to reside in or on thinner regions of villous trophoblast and the placenta may be a relatively privileged site in terms of fibrinolysis. Also, reduced deposition of pFTF is probably linked to changes in the steady state of trophoblast turnover which seems to be perturbed in HA pregnancies. [source] Influence of the copolymer architecture and composition on the response and mechanical properties of pH-sensitive fibersJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 6 2007Anasuya Sahoo Abstract A series of copolymers based on acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylic acid (AA) with varying architecture and composition were synthesized using free radical polymerization. The distribution of monomers in the copolymer chains could be successfully controlled by regulating the addition of more reactive monomer (AA). Copolymers having nearly random distribution of comonomer moieties to block type distribution with different composition (10,50 mol % AA) were synthesized to investigate the effect of polymer architecture and composition on pH response and mechanical properties of resultant structures. These copolymers were solution spun from dimethylformamide-water system, drawn in coagulation bath, and annealed at 120°C for 2 h to make pH-sensitive fibers which were structurally stable without the need of chemical crosslinking. The fibers from block copolymers showed significantly better tensile strength (34.3 MPa), higher retractive forces (0.26 MPa), and enhanced pH response (swelling 3890%) in comparison with fibers from random copolymer (13.55 MPa, 0.058 MPa, and 1723%, respectively). The tensile strength and retractive forces could be further improved to a value of 72 MPa and 0.36 MPa, respectively, by changing the composition of the block copolymer while retaining the swelling percentage similar to the random copolymer mentioned above. It is proposed that on processing to fibers, the block copolymers could form a segregated domain structure with separate domains of AA and AN, where AN domains were responsible for high structural integrity by providing connectivity among polymer chains, while AA domains showed improved response to changing pH of the environment. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007 [source] Pyridinium Cross-Links in Bone of Patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: Evidence of a Normal Intrafibrillar Collagen PackingJOURNAL OF BONE AND MINERAL RESEARCH, Issue 7 2000Ruud A. Bank Ph.D. Abstract The brittleness of bone in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) has been attributed to an aberrant collagen network. However, the role of collagen in the loss of tissue integrity has not been well established. To gain an insight into the biochemistry and structure of the collagen network, the cross-links hydroxylysylpyridinoline (HP) and lysylpyridinoline (LP) and the level of triple helical hydroxylysine (Hyl) were determined in bone of OI patients (types I, III, and IV) as well as controls. The amount of triple helical Hyl was increased in all patients. LP levels in OI were not significantly different; in contrast, the amount of HP (and as a consequence the HP/LP ratio and the total pyridinoline level) was significantly increased. There was no relationship between the sum of pyridinolines and the amount of triple helical Hyl, indicating that lysyl hydroxylation of the triple helix and the telopeptides are under separate control. Cross-linking is the result of a specific three-dimensional arrangement of collagens within the fibril; only molecules that are correctly aligned are able to form cross-links. Inasmuch as the total amount of pyridinoline cross-links in OI bone is similar to control bone, the packing geometry of intrafibrillar collagen molecules is not disturbed in OI. Consequently, the brittleness of bone is not caused by a disorganized intrafibrillar collagen packing and/or loss of cross-links. This is an unexpected finding, because mutant collagen molecules with a random distribution within the fibril are expected to result in disruptions of the alignment of neighboring collagen molecules. Pepsin digestion of OI bone revealed that collagen located at the surface of the fibril had lower cross-link levels compared with collagen located at the inside of the fibril, indicating that mutant molecules are not distributed randomly within the fibril but are located preferentially at the surface of the fibril. [source] Network of sexual contacts and sexually transmitted HIV infection in Burkina FasoJOURNAL OF MEDICAL VIROLOGY, Issue 6 2006Vito Latora Abstract Two thirds of the people who have been infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the world live in Sub-Saharan African countries. The results of a study measuring the degree distribution of the network of sexual contacts in Burkina Faso are described. Such a network is responsible for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and in particular of HIV. It has been found that the number of different sexual partners reported by males is a power law distribution with an exponent ,,=,2.9 (0.1). This is consistent with the degree distribution of scale-free networks. On the other hand, the females can be divided into two groups: the prostitutes with an average of 400 different partners per year, and females with a stable partner, having a rapidly decreasing degree distribution. Such a result may have important implications on the control of sexually transmitted diseases and in particular of HIV. Since scale-free networks have no epidemic threshold, a campaign based on prevention and anti-viral treatment of few highly connected nodes can be more successful than any policy based on enlarged but random distribution of the available anti-viral treatments. [source] Heterogeneous growth of cordierite in low P/T Tsukuba metamorphic rocks from central JapanJOURNAL OF METAMORPHIC GEOLOGY, Issue 2 2001K. Miyazaki Abstract This paper examines the spatial statistics of matrix minerals and complex patterned cordierite porphyroblasts in the low-pressure, high-temperature (low P/T) Tsukuba metamorphic rocks from central Japan, using a density correlation function. The cordierite-producing reaction is sillimanite + biotite + quartz = K-feldspar + cordierite + water. The density correlation function shows that quartz is distributed randomly. However, the density correlation functions of biotite, plagioclase and K-feldspar show that their spatial distributions are clearly affected by the formation of cordierite porphyroblasts. These observations suggest that cordierite growth occurred through a selective growth mechanism: quartz adjacent to cordierite has a tendency to prevent the growth of cordierite, whereas other matrix minerals adjacent to cordierite have a tendency to enhance the growth of cordierite. The density correlation functions of complex patterned cordierite porphyroblasts show power-law behaviour. A selective growth mechanism alone cannot explain the origin of the power-law behaviour. Comparison of the morphology and fractal dimension of cordierite with two-dimensional sections from a three-dimensional diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) suggests that the formation of cordierite porphyroblasts can be modelled as a DLA process. DLA is the simple statistical model for the universal fractal pattern developed in a macroscopic diffusion field. Diffusion-controlled growth interacting with a random field is essential to the formation of a DLA-like pattern. The selective growth mechanism will provide a random noise for the growth of cordierite due to random distribution of quartz. Therefore, a selective growth mechanism coupled with diffusion-controlled growth is proposed to explain the power-law behaviour of the density correlation function of complex patterned cordierite. The results in this paper suggest that not only the growth kinetics but also the spatial distribution of matrix minerals affect the progress of the metamorphic reaction and pattern formation of metamorphic rocks. [source] Molecular Variability of Mycosphaerella graminicola as Detected by RAPD MarkersJOURNAL OF PHYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 10 2004M. Razavi Abstract A total of 90 isolates of Mycosphaerella graminicola, the cause of septoria tritici leaf blotch of wheat, were tested for DNA polymorphism using 15 decamer random primers. There was a high level of genetic variability among isolates. In 131 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fragments, which were produced, 96% were polymorphic. Based on multilocus analysis, 40 different molecular phenotypes were detected. These molecular phenotypes were randomly distributed among sampling sites, suggesting that no clonal structure existed in the population. Cluster analysis showed that the maximum similarity value among isolates was approximately 81% and no identical isolates were detected, indicating that every isolate was a unique genotype. The high degree of DNA polymorphism, the large number of different molecular phenotypes, their random distribution and the results of the cluster analysis all suggested that sexual reproduction has a major role in the genetic structure of M. graminicola in western Canada. The presence of sexual reproduction provides the opportunity for development of new virulent genotypes in the population and suggests that the pathogen may adapt rapidly to any race-specific sources of resistance. Therefore, when breeding for resistance to M. graminicola, emphasis should be placed on use of non-race-specific resistance. [source] Sound Level of Environmental Music and Drinking Behavior: A Field Experiment With Beer DrinkersALCOHOLISM, Issue 10 2008Nicolas Guéguen Objective:, It had been found that environmental music was associated with an increase in alcohol consumption. The presence versus absence of music, high versus slow tempo and the different styles of environmental music is associated with different level of alcohol consumption. However, the effect of the level of the environmental music played in a bar still remained in question. Methods:, Forty male beer drinkers were observed in a bar. According to a random distribution, patrons were exposed to the usual level of environmental music played in 2 bars where the experiment was carried out or were exposed to a high level. Results:, The results show that high level volume led to increase alcohol consumption and reduced the average amount of time spent by the patrons to drink their glass. Conclusions:, The impact of environmental music on consumption was discussed and the "arousal" hypothesis and the negative effect of loud music on social interaction were used to explain our results. [source] Structure and Dielectric Properties of Pb(Sc2/3W1/3)O3,Pb(Zr/Ti)O3 RelaxorsJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, Issue 11 2004Pavol Juhás The structure and dielectric properties of (1,x)Pb(Sc2/3W1/3)O3,(x)Pb(Zr/Ti)O3 ceramics have been investigated over a full substitution range. All compositions with x < 0.5 adopt a cubic perovskite structure; however, for x, 0.25 a doubled cell results from a 1:1 ordered distribution of the B-site cations. The structural order in Pb(Sc2/3W1/3)O3 (PSW) can be described by a random-site model with one cation site occupied by Sc3+ and the other by a random distribution of (Sc1/33+W2/36+). The ordering is destabilized in solid solutions of PSW with PbZrO3 (PSW,PZ), but stabilized by PbTiO3 in the (1,x)PSW,(x)PT system. The changes in order are accompanied by alterations in the dielectric response of the two systems. For PSW,PZ the temperature of the permittivity maximum (T,,max) increases linearly with x; however, for PSW,PT T,,max decreases in the ordered region (up to x= 0.25) and then increases rapidly as the order is lost. Similar effects were produced by modifying the degree of order of (0.75)PSW,(0.25)PT; when the order parameter was reduced from ,1.0 to ,0.65, T,,max increased by more than 60°C. [source] A-Site and B-Site Order in (Na1/2La1/2)(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 PerovskiteJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, Issue 5 2004Rachel Tarvin (Na1/2La1/2)(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 undergoes a series of phase transitions that involve cation order on the A- and B-sites of the parent perovskite structure. At high temperatures both sites contain a random distribution of cations; below 1275°C a ,111, layering of Mg and Nb leads to the formation of a 1:2 ordered structure with a monoclinic supercell. A second transition was observed at 925°C, where the Na and La cations order onto alternate A-site positions along the ,001, direction of the parent subcell. By quenching samples from above 1275°C to preserve the disorder on the B-site, a fourth variant of this compound was obtained by inducing A-site order through a subsequent anneal at 900°C. Although the changes in structure do not produce significant alterations in the relative permittivity (,r, 35), they do have a significant effect on the value of the temperature coefficient of the capacitance. [source] Do spatial effects play a role in the spatial distribution of desert-dwelling Acacia raddiana?JOURNAL OF VEGETATION SCIENCE, Issue 4 2000Kerstin Wiegand Abstract. We investigated the spatial pattern of A. raddiana in the Negev desert of Israel in order to gain insights into the factors and processes driving the dynamics of this species. Using a scale-dependent measure, the ring statistic, we analysed both patterns observed in the field and time series of spatial tree distributions produced by a simulation model. In the field, random spacing was the predominant pattern observed. However seedlings were clumped on small scales. We ran the model under two contrasting scenarios representing hypotheses that explain the clumping of seedlings and the random distribution of trees. One hypothesis is that there is spatial heterogeneity in seed distribution, germination and seedling mortality, but that these heterogeneities are not correlated with each other in space. The second hypothesis assumes a correlation between these heterogeneities leading to areas suitable for establishment. However, the suitability of the sites is temporally variable. Furthermore, the second hypothesis assumes density-dependent tree mortality due to competition. Both hypotheses lead to spatial distributions that are in qualitative agreement with the patterns observed in the field. Therefore, the classical view that a clumped seedling distribution and a random pattern of older trees is due to clumped regeneration and density-dependent mortality may not hold for Acacia trees in the Negev. [source] Latitudinal gradient of taxonomic richness: combined outcome of temperature and geographic mid-domains effects?JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGICAL SYSTEMATICS AND EVOLUTIONARY RESEARCH, Issue 3 2005A. Brayard Abstract For several decades, the origin and ecological consequences of large-scale continental and marine Latitudinal Gradients of Taxonomic Richness (LGTR) have been intensively debated. Among the various hypotheses, it has been proposed that a LGTR is the by-product of a geographic mid-domain effect, i.e. the result of a random distribution of ranges of taxa between physical hard boundaries such as the continent/ocean interface. In order to more realistically evaluate the role of the mid-domain effect on the origin and evolution of the LGTR of marine planktonic organisms, we present a 2D model based on a cellular-automaton approach in which sea surface temperatures (SST) and currents are forced in the biogeographic dispersal of a randomly generated clade (a 2D ,geophyletic' model). Sensitivity experiments allow to evaluate the effects of currents, SST and the geographical origin of a clade on the formation and shape of a LGTR for planktonic organisms when coupled with a geographic mid-domain effect. Results are discussed in the light of the empirical LGTR of extant planktonic Foraminifera in the Atlantic Ocean. Independently of any other biotic or abiotic parameter, inclusive of the surface currents and origination/extinction absolute and relative rates, our simulations show that the coupling of the mid-domain effect with two critical parameters, namely the shape and intensity of the SST gradient and the geographic origin of a clade, produces realistic patterns of diversity when compared with the observed LGTR of extant atlantic planktonic foraminifera. The results illustrate a non-linear relation between a unimodal latitudinal SST gradient and a resulting bimodal LGTR characterized by a drop in species richness near the equator. This relation indicates that the SST gradient exerts a mid-domain effect on the LGTR. The latitudinal positions of the modal values of the LGTR are also found to be influenced by the geographic origin of the simulated clade. Parmi de nombreuses hypothèses, il a été proposé qu'un LGTR puisse être le sous-produit d'un effet de milieu de domaine géographique, i.e. le résultat d'une distribution aléatoire des répartitions des taxa entre deux limites physiques telles que l'interface continent/océan. Afin d'évaluer plus efficacement le rôle de cet effet sur l'origine et l'évolution des LGTR des organismes planctoniques marins, nous proposons un modèle 2D basé sur une approche de type automate cellulaire dans laquelle les températures des eaux de surface (SST) et les courants régulent la dispersion biogéographique d'une phylogénie générée aléatoirement (un modèle «géophylétique»). Ce modèle permet d'évaluer les effets des courants, des SST et de la dépendance thermique des espèces sur la mise en place et la forme d'un LGTR impliquant des organismes planctoniques. Il permet aussi de discuter des influences respectives de ces paramètres quand ils sont superposés à l'effet de milieu de domaine géographique. Les résultats sont discutés à partir du LGTR empirique des foraminifères planctoniques atlantiques actuels. [source] Pheromonally mediated colonization patterns in the velvet worm Euperipatoides rowelli (Onychophora)JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, Issue 4 2000S. D. Barclay Abstract We demonstrate that the males of the peripatopsid Euperipatoides rowelli secrete a pheromone from crural papillae, which acts as an attractant to both males and females of the species. Patterns of colonization of decomposing logs and differences in sex ratio between incipient vs established populations indicate that males are the initial dispersers and colonizers, finding suitable log habitats in an exploratory fashion, while females subsequently colonize logs. This results in a disproportionately high frequency of males in newly colonized logs, followed by a gradual increase in female proportion. We argue that females use the aggregating pheromone secreted by males to target appropriate rotting log microhabitats, resulting in a clumped distribution of females compared to a more random distribution for males among recently colonized logs. This mode of colonization reduces the time that animals, especially females, spend outside the safety of suitable logs, and the risk-taking strategy of male exploration may explain the marked sex ratio bias in favour of females in the population. Rapid and non-random dispersal may also account for the contradictory evidence of unexpectedly high rates of colonization of new logs, yet a paucity of animals in leaf litter samples. The possibility that pheromone trails play a part in the dispersal process is discussed. PUJOLAR Abstract Positive correlations between individual genetic heterozygosity and fitness-related traits (HFCs) have been observed in organisms as diverse as plants, marine bivalves, fish or mammals. HFCs are not universal and the strength and stability of HFCs seem to be variable across species, populations and ages. We analysed the relationship between individual genetic variability and two different estimators of fitness in natural samples of European eel, growth rate (using back-calculated length-at-age 1, 2 and 3) and parasite infestation by the swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus. Despite using a large data set of 22 expressed sequence tags-derived microsatellite loci and a large sample size of 346 individuals, no heterozygote advantage was observed in terms of growth rate or parasite load. The lack of association was evidenced by (i) nonsignificant global HFCs, (ii) a Multivariate General Linear Model showing no effect of heterozygosity on fitness components, (iii) single-locus analysis showing a lower number of significant tests than the expected false discovery rate, (iv) sign tests showing only a significant departure from expectations at one component, and, (v) a random distribution of significant single-locus HFCs that was not consistent across fitness components or sampling sites. This contrasts with the positive association observed in farmed eels in a previous study using allozymes, which can be explained by the nature of the markers used, with the allozyme study including many loci involved in metabolic energy pathways, while the expressed sequence tags-linked microsatellites might be located in genes or in the proximity of genes uncoupled with metabolism/growth. [source] Spatial structure and genetic diversity of two tropical tree species with contrasting breeding systems and different ploidy levelsMOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2004Kevin K. S. Ng Abstract Analyses of the spatial distribution pattern, spatial genetic structure and of genetic diversity were carried out in two tropical tree species with contrasting breeding systems and different ploidy levels using a 50-ha demographic plot in a lowland dipterocarp forest in Peninsular Malaysia. Shorea leprosula is a diploid and predominantly outcrossed species, whereas S. ovalis ssp. sericea is an autotetraploid species with apomictic mode of reproduction. Genetic diversity parameters estimated for S. leprosula using microsatellite were consistently higher than using allozyme. In comparisons with S. leprosula and other tropical tree species, S. ovalis ssp. sericea also displayed relatively high levels of genetic diversity. This might be explained by the lower pressure of genetic drift due to tetrasomic inheritance, and for autotetraploids each locus can accommodate up to four different alleles and this allows maintenance of more alleles at individual loci. The observed high levels of genetic diversity in S. ovalis ssp. sericea can also be due to a random retention of more heterogeneous individuals in the past, and the apomictic mode of reproduction might be an evolutionary strategy, which allows the species to maintain high levels of genetic diversity. The spatial distribution pattern analyses of both species showed significant levels of aggregation at small and medium but random distribution at the big diameter-class. The decrease in magnitude of spatial aggregation from small- to large-diameter classes might be due to compensatory mortality during recruitment and survival under competitive thinning process. Spatial genetic structure analyses for both species revealed significant spatial genetic structure for short distances in all the three diameter-classes. The magnitude of spatial genetic structure in both species was observed to be decreasing from smaller- to larger-diameter classes. The high spatial genetic structuring observed in S. ovalis ssp. sericea at the small-diameter class is due primarily to limited seed dispersal and apomictic mode of reproduction. The similar observation in S. leprosula, however, can be explained by limited seed and pollen dispersal, which supports further the fact that the species is pollinated by weak fliers, mainly of Thrips and Megalurothrips in the lowland dipterocarp forest. [source] Spatial distributions of multiple plant species affect herbivore foraging selectivityOIKOS, Issue 2 2010Ling Wang Spatial distribution of food resources is an important factor determining herbivore foraging. Previous studies have demonstrated that clumped distribution of preferred species increases its consumption by herbivores in single- or two-species systems. However, the potential impact of distribution pattern of less preferred species on foraging was ignored. In natural grasslands with high species diversity and complexity, the spatial distribution of preferred species impacts on herbivore foraging may be strongly correlated with the distribution of less preferred species. Our aims were to determine the effect of distribution of both preferred and other plant species on herbivore foraging under conditions close to a native, multi-species foraging environment, and conceptualize the relationships between spatial distribution of food resources and herbivore consumption. We hypothesized that random distribution of non-preferred species reduces herbivore consumption of preferred species because the dispersion of less preferred species likely disturbs herbivore foraging. We conducted an experiment using three species with five combinations of clumped and random distribution patterns. Three species Lathyrus quinquenervius, Phragmites australis and Leymus chinensis, were of high, intermediate and low preferences by sheep, respectively. Results showed that distribution of low preferred species, but not that of high preferred one, affected the consumption of preferred species. Sheep obtained higher consumption of high preferred species when low preferred species followed a clumped distribution than a random distribution. Distance between aggregations of high and low preferred species did not affect sheep foraging. It was concluded that the effects of spatial distribution of preferred species on its consumption are dependent on herbivore foraging strategy, and sheep can consume more preferred species when there is a consistent spatial pattern between preferred species and the entire food resource, and that the random dispersion of low preferred species in grassland may reduce herbivore consumption of high preferred species, thus minimizing selective grazing. Zólyomi Abstract The radial breathing mode in the Raman spectrum of 13C isotope enriched single walled carbon nanotubes is inhomogeneously broadened due to the random distribution of isotopes. We study this effect theoretically using density functional theory within the local density approximation and compare the result with experiments on isotope engineered double walled carbon nanotubes in which the inner tubes were grown from a mixture of 13C enriched fullerenes and natural fullerenes. As explained by the calculations, this synthesis procedure leads to an increased inhomogeneity compared to a case when only enriched fullerenes are used. The good agreement between the measurements and calculations shows the absence of carbon diffusion along the tube axis during inner tube growth, and presents a strong support of the theory that inner tube growth is governed by Stone,Wales transformations following the interconnection of fullerenes. A. Trepakov Abstract Impurity induced structural transformations are studied for KTa1,xNbxO3 with x = 0.0018 (KTN-1.8) by low-frequency linear and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy techniques. Nb admixture leads to the appearance of a sharp ,,(T) maximum accompanying the ferroelectric phase transition at TC , 27 K, and a glass-like state formation at lower temperatures. The linear permittivity evidences properties inherent to systems being near the quantum-mechanical displacive limit and shows the long range polar order with macroscopic polarization formation at ,27 K. This conclusion was proven by nonlinear polarization response stuidy under dc electric field action, which evidenced also the proximity of the three-critical point. Above 27 K, the nonlinearity increases at cooling in accordance with the Devonshire theory for the paraelectric phase of conventional ferroelectrics. Below 27 K, the random distribution of Nb5+ ions and related system's inhomogeneities provoke a new low temperature phase state formation, which can be treated as reentrant polar-glass. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes II: synthesis and characterization of poly(acrylic acid-co-alkyl acrylate)POLYMERS FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, Issue 11-12 2001Dong-qing Zhuang Abstract A series of hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic acid)(RH -PAA) were synthesized by solution copolymerization of acrylic acid with a small amount of alkyl acrylate (alkyl chain with a length of 8, 12, 14, 16, 18) and their solution properties were also systematically studied. It was found that the random distribution of alkyl acrylate along the polymeric backbone imparts these new materials pronounced associating ability in aqueous solution and the associating abilities vary with the chain length of the hydrophobic groups. In dilute solution, intramolecular association is observed from the intrinsic viscosity and the dependence of the intrinsic viscosity on chain length and ionic strength is also discussed. In semiconcentration solution, the modified polymers exhibit viscosities of several orders of magnitude higher than the unmodified poly(sodium acrylate) due to the strong intermolecular hydrophobic association. And the viscosifying effects become more significant with the increasing length of the alkyl chain. The copolymer solutions are highly pseudoplastic. Evidences for the hydrophobically associating interaction between hydrocarbon groups are provided by the dependence of the Brookfield viscosity on concentration, temperature, shear rate, ionic strength and pH. [source] Chromosome topology in normal and aneuploid blastomeres from human embryosPRENATAL DIAGNOSIS, Issue 12 2007Jan Diblík Abstract Objectives To find whether chromosomes 13, 16, 18, 21, 22, X and Y in blastomeres of human embryos are nonrandomly localized, whether their aneuploidy affects their localization and if eventual early inactivation of chromosome X with peripheral localization is present. Methods Relative distances from the nucleus center and edge of 1198 fluorescence in situ hybridization signals in 98 human blastomeres were measured in digital images for comparison with a mathematical model of random distribution in spherical nucleus. Results Comparison with the mathematical model revealed that localization of chromosomes 13, 16, 21, 22, X and Y in normal and aneuploid blastomeres and that of chromosome 18 in normal blastomeres was not significantly different from random distribution. Similarly, chromosome X in blastomeres with more than one X did not appear to have a preferential localization. Only chromosome 18 in aneuploid blastomeres was differently distributed (p < 0.0001) with a shift to the nuclear periphery (p = < 0.0001). Conclusions Peripheral localization of chromosome 18 in aneuploid blastomeres is related to embryo aneuploidy. Conversely, a peripheral localization of the inactive X chromosome was not found in blastomeres from 3-4 day old embryos. Wilensky Abstract Anatomical studies of the crab stomatogastric ganglion (STG) have suggested only minimal organization within the neuropil of this structure. Here, we present evidence that, for at least one intrinsic neuron type, the ventricular dilator (VD) neuron, a highly organized and stereotyped branching structure exists within the stomatogastric neuropil. Specifically, we show the morphology of the VD neuron consists of a single primary neurite that projects from the soma into the neuropil and bifurcates into a pair of subprimary neurites, which in turn exit the neuropilar region, one entering the left and the other the right medial ventricular nerve. Nearly all secondary neurite branching of the VD neuron is from the subprimary neurites. There are approximately 22 secondary branches/neuron (range 14,28), with no significant difference between the number of secondary branches off the right vs. the left subprimary neurite, although the ratio of secondary branches between subprimaries varies (range 0.4,1.6). The fine neurites that branch from the secondary processes segregate hemispherically within the neuropil, based on the subprimary neurite of origin. Within this hemispherical organization, another level of fine neurite segregation is present, namely, the fine neurites derived from each secondary branch are restricted to discrete regions of the hemisphere with only minimal overlap with those derived from other secondary branches. Monte Carlo simulations show that this segregation differs significantly from a random distribution. The organization of branching seen in the VD neuron may play a critical role in the electrotonic and local computational organization of this neuron and sets the stage for physiological experimentation addressing these issues. [source] A comparative method to evaluate and validate stochastic parametrizationsTHE QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY, Issue 642 2009Leon Hermanson Abstract There is a growing interest in using stochastic parametrizations in numerical weather and climate prediction models. Previously, Palmer (2001) outlined the issues that give rise to the need for a stochastic parametrization and the forms such a parametrization could take. In this article a method is presented that uses a comparison between a standard-resolution version and a high-resolution version of the same model to gain information relevant for a stochastic parametrization in that model. A correction term that could be used in a stochastic parametrization is derived from the thermodynamic equations of both models. The origin of the components of this term is discussed. It is found that the component related to unresolved wave,wave interactions is important and can act to compensate for large parametrized tendencies. The correction term is not proportional to the parametrized tendency. Finally, it is explained how the correction term could be used to give information about the shape of the random distribution to be used in a stochastic parametrization.
