    Does motor activity during psychophysiological paradigms confound the quantification and interpretation of heart rate and heart rate variability measures in young children?

    Abstract Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), heart period, and motor activity were monitored in preschoolers during a variety of tasks varying in required movement. The data analyses indicate: (1) that when activity increases during tasks, there are synchronous decreases in heart period and RSA; (2) that correlations between changes in RSA and heart period are related to activity only during exercise when there is a major demand for increased metabolic resources; and (3) that the covariation among the variables within each condition is low except during exercise. These findings suggest that the slight increases in motor activity (i.e., hand movements) often required in attention demanding psychophysiological protocols are not related to RSA and heart period responses. However, when tasks necessitate large increases in motor activity (e.g., exercise), the decreases in heart period and RSA are related to the change in motor activity. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Physiological effects of separation and reunion in relation to attachment and temperament in young children

    Abstract This study examined physiological effects of separation and reunion in a sample 3- to 6-year-old children. Using continuous ambulatory recording, changes in heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and pre-ejection period (PEP) were compared across the episodes of a separation,reunion procedure based on the strange situation. RSA decreased significantly over the course of the procedure as well as on separation from the parent and not the stranger, supporting that separation from the attachment figure elicited vagal withdrawal in young children. The absence of significant PEP effects suggest that the separation,reunion procedure, and more specifically separation from the parent, was not threatening enough to activate the sympathetic nervous system, even if children were insecure attached and inhibited with regard to strangers. Some of the variability in HR increases to reunion was explained by younger age.     The ontogeny of autonomic measures in 6- and 12-month-old infants

    Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized protocol to measure preejection period (PEP), a measure of sympathetic nervous system, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a measure of parasympathetic nervous system, during resting and challenging states for 6- and 12-month-old infants and to determine developmental changes and individual stability of these measures. A 7-min reactivity protocol was administered to Latino infants at 6 months (n,=,194) and 12 months (n,=,181). Results showed: (1) it is feasible to measure PEP and RSA in infants, (2) the protocol elicited significant autonomic changes, (3) individual resting autonomic measures were moderately stable from 6 to 12 months, but reactivity measures were not stable, and (4) heart rate and RSA resting and challenge group means changed significantly from 6 to 12 months. Findings suggest that although infants' autonomic responses show developmental changes, individuals' rank order is stable from 6 to 12 months of age. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     A modal pushover analysis procedure to estimate seismic demands for unsymmetric-plan buildings

    Abstract An Erratum has been published for this article in Earthquake Engng. Struct. Dyn. 2004; 33:1429. Based on structural dynamics theory, the modal pushover analysis (MPA) procedure retains the conceptual simplicity of current procedures with invariant force distribution, now common in structural engineering practice. The MPA procedure for estimating seismic demands is extended to unsymmetric-plan buildings. In the MPA procedure, the seismic demand due to individual terms in the modal expansion of the effective earthquake forces is determined by non-linear static analysis using the inertia force distribution for each mode, which for unsymmetric buildings includes two lateral forces and torque at each floor level. These ,modal' demands due to the first few terms of the modal expansion are then combined by the CQC rule to obtain an estimate of the total seismic demand for inelastic systems. When applied to elastic systems, the MPA procedure is equivalent to standard response spectrum analysis (RSA). The MPA estimates of seismic demand for torsionally-stiff and torsionally-flexible unsymmetric systems are shown to be similarly accurate as they are for the symmetric building; however, the results deteriorate for a torsionally-similarly-stiff unsymmetric-plan system and the ground motion considered because (a) elastic modes are strongly coupled, and (b) roof displacement is underestimated by the CQC modal combination rule (which would also limit accuracy of RSA for linearly elastic systems).     Correlation between physicochemical analysis and radical-scavenging activity of vegetable oil blends as affected by frying of French fries

    Abstract The main goal of the present work was to compare and correlate the results of physicochemical parameters and antiradical performance of some oil blends during deep-frying, which will be an initial indicator for applying antiradical tests for monitoring deep-frying oils. Two oil blends were prepared. The first blend was a mixture (1,:,1, wt/wt) of sunflower seed oil and palm olein (SO/PO) and the second was a mixture (1,:,1, wt/wt) of cottonseed oil and palm olein (CO/PO). The oil blends were evaluated during intermittent frying of French fries on two consecutive days for 16,h, with oil replenishing after 8,h. Changes in the fatty acid profile and some physicochemical parameters (peroxide value, color index, viscosity, total polar compounds and UV absorbance at 232 and 270,nm) were used to evaluate the alterations during frying. A quick spectrophotometric method was developed to assess deep-frying oil quality. With the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, the neutralization of the stable radical DPPH by antioxidants present in the oil during frying was measured. Radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of both oil blends was recorded during frying, wherein the results showed that the SO/PO blend had the highest RSA. It was evident from the results that a proportional correlation and positive relationship existed between the levels of fatty acids and the physicochemical characteristics of the vegetable oil blends and their RSA. The initial results obtained allow us to suggest that antiradical measurements could be used to quantify the oxidative and hydrolytic deterioration of vegetable oils upon frying. [source]


    Polyphenylene Dendrimer-Templated In Situ Construction of Inorganic,Organic Hybrid Rice-Shaped Architectures

    Abstract A novel dendrimer-templating method for the synthesis of CuO nanoparticles and the in situ construction of ordered inorganic,organic CuO,G2Td(COOH)16rice-shaped architectures (RSAs) with analogous monocrystalline structures are reported. The primary CuO nanoparticles are linked by the G2Td(COOH)16 dendrimer. This method provides a way to preserve the original properties of primary CuO nanoparticles in the ordered hybrid nanomaterials by using the 3D rigid polyphenylene dendrimer (G2Td(COOH)16) as a space isolation. The primary CuO nanoparticles with diameter of (6.3,±,0.4) nm are synthesized via four successive reaction steps starting from the rapid reduction of Cu(NO3)2 by using NaBH4 as reducer and G2Td(COOH)16 as surfactant. The obtained hybrid CuO,G2Td(COOH)16 RSA, formed in the last reaction step, possesses a crystal structure analogous to a monocrystal as observed by transmission electron microscopy(TEM). In particular, the formation process of the RSA is monitored by UV,vis, TEM, and X-ray diffraction. Small angle X-ray scattering and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are used to investigate the role of the dendrimer in the RSA formation process. The obtained results illuminate that Cu2+COO, coordination bonds play an indispensable role in bridging and dispersing the primary CuO nanoparticles to induce and maintain the hybrid RSA. More importantly, the RSA is retained through the Cu2+COO,coordination bonds even with HCl treatment, suggesting that the dendrimers and Cu2+ ions may form rice-shaped polymeric complexes which could template the assembly of CuO nanoparticles towards RSAs. This study highlights the feasibility and flexibility of employing the peculiar dendrimers to in-situ build up hybrid architectures which could further serve as templates, containers or nanoreactors for the synthesis of other nanomaterials.     Rhythmic hippocampal slow oscillation characterizes REM sleep in humans

    Abstract Hippocampal rhythmic slow activity (RSA) is a well-known electrophysiological feature of exploratory behavior, spatial cognition, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in several mammalian species. Recently, RSA in humans during spatial navigation was reported, but systematic data regarding human REM sleep are lacking. Using mesio-temporal corticography with foramen ovale electrodes in epileptic patients, we report the presence of a 1.5,3-Hz synchronous rhythmic hippocampal oscillation seemingly specific to REM sleep. This oscillation is continuous during whole REM periods, is clearly observable by visual inspection, and appears in tonic and phasic REM sleep episodes equally. Quantitative analysis proved that this 1.5,3-Hz frequency band significantly differentiates REM sleep from waking and slow-wake sleep (SWS). No other frequency band proved to be significant or showed this high rhythmicity. Even in temporo-lateral surface recordings, although visually much less striking, the relative power of the 1.5,3-Hz frequency band differentiates REM sleep from other states with statistical significance. This could mean that the 1.5,3-Hz hippocampal RSA spreads over other cortical areas in humans as in other mammals. We suggest that this oscillation is the counterpart of the hippocampal theta of mammalian REM sleep, and that the 1.5,3-Hz delta EEG activity is a basic neurophysiological feature of human REM sleep.     A Longitudinal Examination of Physiological Regulation in Cocaine-Exposed Infants Across the First 7 Months of Life

    This study examined the association between prenatal exposure to cocaine and physiological regulation across the first 7 months of age. Measures of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were obtained from 169 (82 cocaine-exposed and 87 nonexposed) infants during baseline periods at 1 month and 7 months of age and during tasks designed to elicit positive and negative affect at 7 months of age. After controlling for maternal age, gestational age, and obstetrical risk, structural equation modeling indicated that the association between prenatal exposure to cocaine and baseline RSA at 7 months of age was direct even in the presence of an indirect effect through baseline RSA at 1 month of age. There were no indirect effects through maternal affect during mother-infant interactions assessed at 1 month of age. Analyses also indicated a direct association between prenatal exposure to cocaine and RSA regulation to negative affect at 7 months of age. [source]


    Contingency Learning and Reactivity in Preterm and Full-Term Infants at 3 Months

    Learning difficulties in preterm infants are thought to reflect impairment in arousal regulation. We examined relationships among gestational age, learning speed, and behavioral and physiological reactivity in 55 preterm and 49 full-term infants during baseline, contingency, and nonreinforcement phases of a conjugate mobile paradigm at 3 months corrected age. For all infants, negative affect, looking duration, and heart rate levels increased during contingency and nonreinforcement phases, whereas respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA, an index of parasympathetic activity) decreased and Cortisol did not change. Learners showed greater RSA suppression and less negative affect than nonleamers. This pattern was particularly evident in the preterm group. Overall, preterm infants showed less learning, spent less time looking at the mobile, and had lower Cortisol levels than full-term infants. Preterm infants also showed greater heart rate responses to contingency and dampened heart rate responses to nonreinforcement compared to full-term infants. Findings underscore differences in basal and reactivity measures in preterm compared to full-term infants and suggest that the capacity to regulate parasympathetic activity during a challenge enhances learning in preterm infants.     Refined second order semi-analytical design sensitivities

    Abstract Accurate and efficient calculation of second order design sensitivities in a finite element context is often difficult. The semi-analytical (SA) method is efficient and easy to implement but has accuracy problems even for first order shape design sensitivities. To overcome accuracy problems a refined semi-analytical (RSA) method has been developed for first order sensitivities. The present paper investigates the application of the RSA method to second order design sensitivities.     IL-1 receptor antagonist gene polymorphism in idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortion in a Chinese Han population

    Summary Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) has been supposed to play important roles in pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the polymorphisms of IL-1Ra gene (IL1RN) variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) in intron 2 with idiopathic recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). Ninety-two RSA patients and hundred normal women with at least one live birth and no history of miscarriage were included in the study. Frequencies of the IL1RN alleles and genotypes were determined. Data revealed that the prevalence of IL1RN allele and genotype was not significant between the RSA and control group (all P > 0.05). Our finding indicated that the polymorphism VNTR of IL1RN gene in intron 2 may not be a risk factor for RSA in the Chinese Han population. [source]


    HLA-G polymorphism in a Chinese Han population with recurrent spontaneous abortion

    Summary Reproduction is an important biological phenomenon posing an immunological paradox because the semiallogeneic fetus survives by evading maternal immune recognition. The detailed mechanisms behind this maternal,fetal immunotolerance remain elusive. Human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-G, a non-classical HLA class I antigen, initially identified as a molecule selectively expressed on extravillous cytotrophoblasts and first studied in the context of pregnancy, has long been supposed to play a critical role in fetal,maternal immunotolerance. To investigate the role of HLA-G polymorphism in this process and whether the HLA-G genotype is associated with an increased risk for a subsequent miscarriage, 69 women with three or more recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSA) and 146 fertile control women were genotyped for the HLA-G locus in this study. To our knowledge, this is the first report on HLA-G polymorphism in RSA and in normal fertile women from a Chinese Han population. Nine HLA-G alleles were detected in the fertile control group; however, the allele HLA-G*0103 was absent in the RSA group. No statistical significance was observed in the distribution of HLA-G alleles between the two groups. The frequency of the null allele HLA-G*0105 N in the RSA group and in normal fertile women is 0.7% and 1.4%, respectively. Our data suggested that there was no association of HLA-G polymorphism with RSA. [source]


    Resilience in relation to personality and intelligence

    Abstract Resilience is a construct of increasing interest, but validated scales measuring resilience factors among adults are scarce. Here, a scale named the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) was crossvalidated and compared with measures of personality (Big Five/5PFs), cognitive abilities (Raven's Advanced Matrices, Vocabulary, Number series), and social intelligence (TSIS). All measures were given to 482 applicants for the military college. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the fit of the five-factor model, measuring ,personal strength', ,social competence', ,structured style', ,family cohesion' and ,social resources'. Using Big Five to discriminate between well adjusted and more vulnerable personality profiles, all resilience factors were positively correlated with the well adjusted personality profile. RSA-personal strength was most associated with 5PFs-emotional stability, RSA-social competence with 5PFs-extroversion and 5PFs-agreeableness, as well as TSIS-social skills, RSA-structured style with 5PFs-conscientiousness. Unexpectedly but interestingly, measures of RSA-family cohesion and RSA-social resources were also related to personality. Furthermore, the RSA was unrelated to cognitive abilities. This study supported the convergent and discriminative validity of the scale, and thus the inference that individuals scoring high on this scale are psychologically healthier, better adjusted, and thus more resilient.     Changes in the Radical-Scavenging Activity of Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia L.) during Freezing and Frozen Storage with or without Blanching

    ABSTRACT:, The effects of blanching, freezing, and frozen storage on the retention of radical-scavenging activity (RSA), total phenolics, and ascorbic acid in bitter gourd were investigated. Blanching of sliced bitter gourd resulted in considerable losses of RSA and total phenolics, and most extensively, of ascorbic acid. In the subsequent frozen storage at ,18 °C, RSA and total phenolic content of unblanched and blanched bitter gourd underwent little change for 90 d then gradually declined, but at ,40 °C, they practically remained unchanged throughout the entire storage period. On the contrary, ascorbic acid content of both unblanched and blanched bitter gourd decreased abruptly at the early stage in frozen storage. The results show that blanching of bitter gourd improves the retention of RSA and total phenolics during subsequent frozen storage but markedly aggravated loss of ascorbic acid. Finally, it is to be noted that RSA, total phenolics, and ascorbic acid originally contained in the raw bitter gourd were overall best retained by quick freezing followed by frozen storage at ,40 °C without preceding blanching.     An in silico method using an epitope motif database for predicting the location of antigenic determinants on proteins in a structural context

    Abstract Presently X-ray crystallography of protein,antibody complexes is still the most direct way of identifying B-cell epitopes. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of a computer-based epitope mapping tool (EMT) using antigenic amino acid motifs as a fast alternative in a number of applications not requiring detailed information, e.g. development of pharmaceutical proteins, vaccines and industrial enzymes. Using Gal d 4 as a model protein, the EMT was capable of identifying, in the context of the folded protein, amino acid positions known to be involved in antibody binding. The high sensitivity and positive predictive value of the EMT as well as the relevance of the structural associations suggested by the EMT indicated the existence of amino acid motifs that are likely to be involved in antigenic determinants. In addition, differential mapping revealed that sensitivity and positive predictive value were dependent on the minimum relative surface accessibility (RSA) of the amino acids included in the mapping, demonstrating that the EMTs accommodated for the fact that epitopes are three-dimensional entities with various degrees of accessibility. The comparison with existing prediction scales demonstrated the superiority of the EMT with respect to physico-chemical scales. The mapping tool also performed better than the available structural scales, but the significance of the differences remains to be established. Thus, the EMT has the potential of becoming a fast and simple alternative to X-ray crystallography for predicting structural antigenic determinants, if detailed epitope information is not required.     Evaluation of penetration and adaptation of three different sealers: a SEM study

    Summary, In this study, dentinal penetration and adaptation of three endodontic sealers were evaluated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Seventeen recently extracted, human maxillary anterior teeth were used. After the crowns were removed from the cementoenamel junction, the root canals were instrumented. The teeth were then randomly divided into three groups of five roots each and two teeth were used as controls. The smear layer was removed with EDTA and NaOCl. The canals were obturated with AH 26, CRCS, RSA sealers and gutta-percha using lateral condensation technique. Each root was sectioned longitudinally and then prepared for SEM evaluation. The SEM results showed that AH 26 was the best sealer penetrating into dentinal tubules and adapted to dentinal walls when compared with the CRCS and RSA. The CRCS and RSA occluded the orificies of dentinal tubules. The RSA showed that the penetration was less than AH 26 and more than CRCS. [source]


    A comparison of the in vitro cytotoxicity of two root canal sealers

    summary, The purpose of this study was to compare the cytotoxicity of an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) and a silicone-based sealer (Roeko Seal Automix, RSA). Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay for mitochondrial enzyme activity and haemocytometer viable cell counting after 24, 48 and 72-h exposure to L929 cells. AH Plus and RSA showed no statistically significant difference in the degree of toxicity. Both sealers had a low toxic influence on the cells during the experimental period. This study indicates that epoxy resin-based sealer AH Plus and the silicone-based sealer RSA have similar levels of cytotoxicity to mouse fibroblasts. [source]


    Accuracy and precision of radiostereometric analysis in the measurement of three-dimensional micromotion in a fracture model of the distal radius

    Abstract The purpose of the current study was to verify the feasibility of radiostereometric analysis (RSA) in monitoring three-dimensional fracture micromotion in fractures of the distal radius. The experimental set-up consisted of a simulated model of an extra-articular Colles' fracture, including metallic beads inserted into the bone on either side of the fracture site. The model was rigidly fixed to high precision micrometer stages allowing controlled translation in three axes and rotation about the longitudinal and transverse axes. The whole construct was placed inside a RSA calibration cage with two perpendicular radiographic film cassettes. Accuracy was calculated as the 95% prediction intervals from the regression analyses between the micromotion measured by RSA and actual displacements measured by micrometers. Precision was determined as the standard deviation of five repeated measurements of a 200 ,m displacement or a 0.5° rotation along a specific axis. Translations from 25 ,m to 5 mm were measured with an accuracy of ±6,m and translations of 200,m were measured with a precision of 2,6 ,m. Rotations ranging from 1/6° to 2° were measured with an accuracy of ±0.073° and rotations of 1/2° were measured with a precision of 0.025°,0.096°. The number of markers and their configuration had greater impact on the accuracy and precision of rotation than on those of translation. Aside from the unknown rate of clinical marker loosening, the current results favor the use of at least four markers in each bone fragment in distal radius fractures. These results suggest a strong rationale for the use of RSA as an objective tool for comparing different treatment modalities and novel bone graft substitutes aimed at stabilization of fractures of the distal radius. © 2004 Orthopaedic Research Society.     Laboratory Models Available to Study Alcohol-Induced Organ Damage and Immune Variations: Choosing the Appropriate Model

    The morbidity and mortality resulting from alcohol-related diseases globally impose a substantive cost to society. To minimize the financial burden on society and improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from the ill effects of alcohol abuse, substantial research in the alcohol field is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which alcohol-related diseases develop and progress. Since ethical concerns and inherent difficulties limit the amount of alcohol abuse research that can be performed in humans, most studies are performed in laboratory animals. This article summarizes the various laboratory models of alcohol abuse that are currently available and are used to study the mechanisms by which alcohol abuse induces organ damage and immune defects. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the models are discussed. Integrated into the review are the presentations that were made in the symposium "Methods of Ethanol Application in Alcohol Model,How Long is Long Enough" at the joint 2008 Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) and International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ISBRA) meeting, Washington, DC, emphasizing the importance not only of selecting the most appropriate laboratory alcohol model to address the specific goals of a project but also of ensuring that the findings can be extrapolated to alcohol-induced diseases in humans.     Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters Biobehavioral Reactivity to Pain in Newborns

    Objectives:, To examine biobehavioral responses to an acute pain event in a Cape Town, South Africa, cohort consisting of 28 Cape Colored (mixed ancestry) newborns (n = 14) heavily exposed to alcohol during pregnancy (exposed), and born to abstainers (n = 14) or light (,0.5 oz absolute alcohol/d) drinkers (controls). Methods:, Mothers were recruited during the third trimester of pregnancy. Newborn data were collected on postpartum day 3 in the maternity obstetrical unit where the infant had been delivered. Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure was defined as maternal consumption of at least 14 drinks/wk or at least 1 incident of binge drinking/mo. Acute stress-related biobehavioral markers [salivary cortisol, heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), spectral measures of heart rate variability (HRV), and videotaped facial actions] were collected thrice during a heel lance blood collection (baseline, lance, and recovery). After a feeding and nap, newborns were administered an abbreviated Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. Results:, There were no between-group differences in maternal age, marital status, parity, gravidity, depression, anxiety, pregnancy smoking, maternal education, or infant gestational age at birth (all ps > 0.15). In both groups, HR increased with the heel lance and decreased during the postlance period. The alcohol-exposed group had lower mean HR than controls throughout, and showed no change in RSA over time. Cortisol levels showed no change over time in controls but decreased over time in exposed infants. Although facial action analyses revealed no group differences in response to the heel lance, behavioral responses assessed on the Brazelton Neonatal Scale showed less arousal in the exposed group. Conclusions:, Both cardiac autonomic and hypothalamic,pituitary,adrenal stress reactivity measures suggest a blunted response to an acute noxious event in alcohol-exposed newborns. This is supported by results on the Brazelton Neonatal Scale indicating reduced behavioral arousal in the exposed group. To our knowledge, these data provide the first biobehavioral examination of early pain reactivity in alcohol-exposed newborns and have important implications for understanding neuro-/biobehavioral effects of prenatal alcohol exposure in the newborn period.     The Search for Mechanisms of Behavior Change in Evidence-Based Behavioral Treatments for Alcohol Use Disorders: Overview

    Background:, Over the past three decades, the main question of interest to alcohol treatment researchers has concerned the main effects of a particular behavioral intervention or what works. Increasingly, alcohol treatment researchers are turning their attention to the underlying psychological, social, and even neurophysiologic processes or "active ingredients" that are driving therapeutic change. Method:, The articles contained in this supplement to Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research grew out of invited presentations given at a one-day satellite session immediately preceding the 28th Annual Meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA). The conference was a collaborative effort of the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addiction at the University of New Mexico, the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, Brown University, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health. Results:, The conference featured a mix of full-length presentations on conceptual and methodological issues, reports of original research findings, and lively discussion among speakers and conference participants. Understanding mechanisms of behavior change will benefit the field by identifying the key aspects of therapy that must be present for maximum effect, irrespective of the specific technique being applied; provide a new way to approach patient,treatment interactions; and lay the groundwork for understanding how change is affected by social and other extratreatment factors. Conclusions:, Although not a new topic to the field, understanding mechanisms of behavior change has begun to capture the interest of an increasing number of alcohol treatment researchers. Understanding behavior change is an exceedingly complex enterprise and innovative thinking and creative research designs will be required to advance the field. [source]


    Relationships between the constructs of a theory of curriculum implementation

    Planned educational change occurs regularly throughout the world. With the enormous political change the 1994 elections brought to South Africa, a complete change in education policies was called for. The new Curriculum 2005 (C2005; Department of Education, RSA, 1997) embraced new teaching and learning approaches such as outcomes-based education and learner-centered teaching practices. To explore the progress of the implementation of C2005, a theoretical framework specifically designed to elucidate curriculum implementation in developing countries was applied to 10 case studies. The framework consists of interrelating constructs with subconstructs which impact on curriculum implementation. It enables one to look at the levels of implementation achieved both in terms of the capacity of the school and the extent to which outside support and pressure is provided. The case studies were carried out in a representative sample of schools in Mpumalanga, one of the nine South African provinces. The aim of this article is to investigate the possible interrelationships of the constructs and the subconstructs.     A neutral-niche theory of nestedness in mutualistic networks

    Recently, there has been a vigorous interest in community ecology about the structure of mutualistic networks and its importance for species persistence and coevolution. However, the mechanisms shaping mutualistic networks have been rarely explored. Here we extend for the first time the neutral theory of biodiversity to a multi trophic system. We focus on nestedness, a distinctive pattern of mutualistic community assembly showing two characteristics, namely, asymmetrical specialization (specialists interacting with generalists) and a generalist core (generalists interacting with generalists). We investigate the importance of relative species abundance (RSA) for the nested assembly of plant,animal mutualistic networks. Our results show that neutral mutualistic communities give rise to networks considerably more nested than real communities. RSA explains 60,70% of nested patterns in two real communities studied here, while 30,40% of nestedness is still unexplained. The nested pattern in real communities is better explained when we introduce interaction-specific species traits such as forbidden links and intensity of dependence (relative importance of fruits for the diet of a frugivore) in our analysis. The fact that neutral mutualistic communities exhibit a perfectly nested structure and do not show a random or compartmentalized structure, underlines the importance of RSA in the assembly of mutualistic networks.     Proteomic analysis of recurrent spontaneous abortion: Identification of an inadequately expressed set of proteins in human follicular fluid

    Abstract Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA), defined as the loss of three or more consecutive pregnancies prior to the 20th,week of gestation, affects up to 5% of the child-bearing population. To investigate the proteins associated with RSA, the protein expression in human follicular fluid was analyzed using 2-DE. Follicular fluid contains a variety of biologically important proteins for oocyte fertilization and follicle maturation in the mammalian reproductive process. Therefore, it can be used as a provisional source for identifying proteins involved in RSA. In this study, we identified five aberrantly expressed proteins (complement component,C3c chain,E, fibrinogen,,, antithrombin, angiotensinogen, and hemopexin precursor) in follicular fluid from RSA patients with MALDI-TOF-MS and nano-LC MS/MS. Western blot analysis confirmed that the protein expression level of fibrinogen,, and antithrombin was less in follicular fluid from RSA patients than those from normal controls. Semiquantitative RT-PCR and real-time PCR analyses revealed that mRNA level of these coagulation factors was also decreased significantly in chorionic villi of RSA patients compared with normal samples. Taken all together, it is likely that coagulation factors (fibrinogen,, and antithrombin) play an important role in maintaining the normal pregnancy. [source]


    The effects of 28 hours of sleep deprivation on respiratory sinus arrhythmia during tasks with low and high controlled attention demands

    Abstract Task performance while sleep deprived may be moderated by the controlled attention required by the task (Pilcher, Band, Odle-Dusseau, & Muth, 2007). This study examined the effects of 28 h of sleep deprivation on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during tasks with low and high controlled attention demands. The results showed that RSA increased throughout the night for both task types, but was consistently reduced during the low compared to high controlled attention tasks. The increase in RSA was linear for the high controlled attention tasks but curvilinear for the low ones. Hence, RSA followed a circadian pattern during the low controlled attention tasks but not the high ones. These results suggest that the effects of sleep deprivation on task performance may be moderated by parasympathetic activity and task type, and this has implications for task assignment during sustained operations that cause sleep deprivation.     RSA fluctuation in major depressive disorder

    Abstract Cardiac vagal control, as measured by indices of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), has been investigated as a marker of impaired self-regulation in mental disorders, including depression. Past work in depressed samples has focused on deficits in resting RSA levels, with mixed results. This study tested the hypothesis that depression involves abnormal RSA fluctuation. RSA was measured in depressed and healthy control participants during rest and during two reactivity tasks, each followed by a recovery period. Relative to controls, depressed persons exhibited lower resting RSA levels as well as less RSA fluctuation, primarily evidenced by a lack of task-related vagal suppression. Group differences in RSA fluctuation were not accounted for by differences in physical health or respiration, whereas group differences in resting RSA level did not survive covariate analyses. Depression may involve multiple deficits in cardiac vagal control. [source]


    Respiratory sinus arrhythmia predicts written disclosure outcome

    Abstract Research has indicated that writing about traumatic experiences is associated with beneficial health effects compared with writing about emotionally neutral topics. What remains unclear are those factors that moderate the beneficial effects associated with written disclosure. This study examined respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) as a moderator of written disclosure outcome. Findings indicated that individuals with the highest RSA during the first written disclosure session benefited most from written disclosure in terms of physical health complaints and depression symptoms. As expected, RSA did not impact outcome for participants assigned to a control condition. These findings indicate that individuals who display good emotion regulation skills are best served by written disclosure. [source]


    Vagal rebound during resolution of tearful crying among depressed and nondepressed individuals

    Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is an index of the vagal control of heart rate that is associated with emotion regulatory capacity. To examine RSA in depressed and nondepressed participants in the context of an emotion,regulatory challenge, we presented a sad film to induce crying, a behavior associated with heightened parasympathetic activation. We predicted that nondepressed persons who cried would show elevations in RSA during the onset and the resolution of crying. By contrast, we predicted that depressed individuals who cried would fail to exhibit increased RSA over the course of their crying episodes. As hypothesized, nondepressed participants exhibited RSA increases that accompanied the resolution of tearful crying, consistent with a homeostatic function for crying, whereas depressed subjects who cried did not exhibit increased RSA. Results suggest that the physiological self,regulatory mechanisms invoked by crying are compromised in depression. [source]
