    Window pane condensation and high indoor vapour contribution , markers of an unhealthy indoor climate?

    Objective The aim of this study was to investigate whether window pane condensation and indoor vapour contribution , 3 g/m3 could be used as indicators of defective air change rate, high indoor humidity and high mite allergen concentration in mattress dust. Methods Actual ventilation rate, indoor temperature, air humidity (AIH/RH) and concentrations of mite allergen were measured in 59 houses and compared with received outdoor temperatures and air humidity. Indoor vapour contribution defined as the difference between the indoor and the outdoor vapour concentration was calculated. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and accuracy were calculated for window pane condensation and high vapour contribution (, 3 g/m3), as indicators of defective ventilation (< 0.5 ACH), high indoor humidity (, 7 g/kg and , 45% RH) and high mite allergen concentration in mattress dust (, 2 ,g/g). Results All houses with high humidity and high mite allergen concentrations were positive for the two indicators (high sensitivity), but with a specificity of only 50% so that half of the houses with reported condensation and high vapour contribution turned out to be low pollution houses with adequate high ventilation levels. Both indicators had high negative predictive values and absence of the two indicators almost certainly (97,100%) excluded high indoor pollution with high humidity and high mite concentrations. Overall more than 70% of the dwellings were correctly classified by the two indicators. Conclusion Absence of window pane condensation on double-glazed windows and low indoor vapour contribution (< 3 g/m3) during the winter are true markers of a dwelling without high indoor air humidity and without high mite allergen concentrations in mattress dust in houses in a cold temperate climate with subzero outdoor temperatures. The presence of the two indicators is associated with a 18,45% risk of high humidity and mite allergen concentrations so in this latter group further measurements are needed for correct classification.     Microstructural, thermal, and electrical properties of Bi1.7V0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox glass-ceramic superconductor

    Abstract A glass-ceramic Bi1.7V0.3Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox superconductor was prepared by the melt-quenching method. The compound was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, current-voltage characteristics, transport resistance measurements, and Hall effect measurements. Two main phases (BSCCO 2212 and 2223) were observed in the x-ray data and the values of the lattice parameters quite agree with the known values for 2212 and 2223 phases. The glass transition temperature was found to be 426 °C while the activation energy for crystallization of glass has been found to be Ea = 370.5 kJ / mol. This result indicates that the substitution of vanadium increased the activation energy for the BSCCO system. An offset Tc of 80 K was measured and the onset Tc was 100 K. The Hall resistivity ,H was found to be almost field-independent at the normal state. A negative Hall coefficient was observed and no sign reversal of ,H or RH could be noticed. The mobility and carrier density at different temperatures in the range 140-300 K under different applied magnetic fields up to 1.4 T were also measured and the results are discussed.     Early neurodevelopmental markers predictive of mortality in infants infected with HIV-1

    One-hundred and fifty-seven vertically infected HIV-1 positive infants (85 males, 72 females) underwent longitudinal assessment to determine whether early neurodevelopmental markers are useful predictors of mortality in those infants who survive to at least 4 months of age. Survival analysis methods were used to estimate time to death for quartiles of 4-month scores (baseline) on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID). Cox proportional hazards progression was used to estimate relative hazard (RH, 95% CI) of death for BSID scores and potential confounders. Thirty infants with BSID scores at 4 months of age died during follow-up. Survival analysis revealed greater mortality rates in infants with BSID (Mental Developmental Index and Psychomotor Developmental Index) scores in the lower quartile(p=0.004,p=0.036). Unadjusted univariate analyses revealed increased mortality associated with baseline CD4+ 29%, gestational age <37 weeks, smaller head circumference, advanced HIV and higher plasma viral load. BSID scores independently predicted mortality after adjusting for treatment, clinical category, gestational age, plasma viral load and CD4+ percentage. [source]


    Effect of pioglitazone on insulin sensitivity, vascular function and cardiovascular inflammatory markers in insulin-resistant non-diabetic Asian Indians

    Abstract Aims To determine the effects of pioglitazone (30 mg once daily for 16 weeks) on insulin sensitivity, insulin-mediated vasodilation, vascular inflammatory markers, fat distribution and lipids in Asian Indians and Caucasians of European ancestry. Methods Cross-sectional study. Eighteen non-diabetic Asian Indians and 17 Caucasians of comparable age (34 ± 3 vs. 36 ± 3 years) and body mass index (26.0 ± 1.2 vs. 24.7 ± 1.0 kg/m2) had measurements of insulin sensitivity (M, insulin clamp at 6 pmol/kg per min), abdominal fat (computed tomographic scan at L4-L5), endothelial-dependent (reactive hyperaemia, RH) and -independent (0.4 mg sublingual nitroglycerin, TNG) vasodilation using brachial artery ultrasound before and after the 2-h clamp at baseline and after pioglitazone therapy. Results Asian Indians were insulin resistant compared with Causasians during the baseline clamp (M = 25.6 ± 1.7 vs. 41.1 ± 2.2 µmol/kg per min, P < 0.0001) and improved significantly after pioglitazone (to 33.9 ± 1.7 µmol/kg per min, P < 0.001). Vasodilatory responses to RH and TNG were similar in Asian Indians and Caucasians at baseline and did not change. Insulin-mediated vasodilation improved after pioglitazone in Asian Indians, but not in Caucasians, and correlated with the change in insulin sensitivity (r = 0.52, P = 0.03). C-reactive protein (CRP) was higher in Asian Indians vs. Caucasians (1.6 ± 0.4 vs. 0.9 ± 0.2 mg/l) and was negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity (r = ,0.53, P = 0.02). In the Asian Indian group, CRP and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 decreased and adiponectin increased after pioglitazone, but there were no significant changes in total or visceral fat. Conclusions These results demonstrate that insulin-resistant Asian Indians respond favourably to an insulin sensitizer with improvements in insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular and inflammatory risk markers, and vascular responses to insulin. These agents may have a role in decreasing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in this high-risk population. [source]


    Reproductive health services for refugees by refugees: an example from Guinea

    The need to involve refugees in their own reproductive health (RH) services has long been recognised, but there is a lack of published examples describing how this can be achieved collaboratively between refugee initiatives, UNHCR, bilateral development organisations and international relief agencies. This paper outlines the work, outputs and lessons learnt of the Reproductive Health Group (RHG), an organisation of Liberian and Sierra Leonean refugee midwives and laywomen providing RH services to fellow refugees in Guinea's Forest Region between 1996 and 2000. Working as part of the Guinean health system, RHG midwives and community facilitators helped make the RH services in their region the most effective in Guinea at the time. Looking at RHG's achievements, the challenges it faced and partly overcame, it is argued that refugee organisations can plan and implement RH services for refugees where UNHCR and its international partners ensure that they receive funding and technical assistance.     Sensing with Nafion Coated Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors

    Abstract Sequential CVD and CMOS processes were used to make a FET that has single walled carbon nanotubes to serve as the conducting source to drain channel. This structure can be decorated to provide gas and liquid responses and herein is evaluated as a humdity sensor. The Na+, K+, and Ca2+ ion-exchanged Nafion polymer acts as the chemically sensitive layer in this electrochemical sensor. The effect of gate voltage on the charge-sensitive NT structure was found to be RH dependent over the range of 12,93% RH with msec response time. [source]


    Impact of artificial photoperiodism on the colony development of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris

    Abstract This study investigated the effect of the photoperiodic regimes 0 h light : 24 h dark (LD 0:24), LD 8:16, LD 16:8 and LD 24:0 at 28°C and 50% Relative Humidity (RH) on the colony development of hibernated (2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 months) bumblebee queens. The queens which had hibernated for 3.0 months and which were reared in a LD 8:16 photoperiod showed the highest rate of colony initiation (88.2%), colony foundation (67.6%) and progeny queen production (38.2%). The photoperiod LD 8:16 also produced the shortest period of colony initiation and colony foundation. The highest number of sexual males (171.2 ± 12.2) and queens (91.2 ± 9.9) were produced in the colonies when 3.5 and 3.0 month hibernated queens were kept in an LD 8:16 photoperiod. The results show that light regime and hibernation duration affect colony characteristics of Bombus terrestris. [source]


    Potentialities of quantile regression to predict ozone concentrations

    Abstract This paper aims: (i) to analyse the influence of ozone precursors (both meteorological variables and pollutant concentrations) on ozone concentrations at different ozone levels; and (ii) to predict next day hourly ozone concentrations using a new approach based on quantile regression (QR). The performance of this model was compared with multiple linear regressions (MLR) for the three following periods: daylight, night time and all day. QR as proven to be an useful mathematical tool to evidence the heterogeneity of ozone predictor influences at different ozone levels. Such heterogeneity is generally hidden when an ordinary least square regression model is applied. The influence of previous concentrations of ozone and nitrogen monoxide on next day ozone concentrations was higher for lower quantiles. When QR was applied, the wind direction (WD) was found to be significant in the medium quantiles and the relative humidity (RH) in the higher quantiles. On the contrary, using the MLR models, both variables were not statistically significant. Moreover, QR allowed more efficient previsions of extreme values which are very useful once the forecasting of higher concentrations is fundamental to develop strategies for protecting the public health.     The effect of pitting corrosion on fatigue life

    Fatigue testing of pre-pitted 2024-T3 aluminium alloy specimens is performed in laboratory air at 22 °C and 40% RH to characterize the effect of pitting corrosion on fatigue life. Specimens, pre-corroded in a 0.5 M NaCl solution from 48 to 384 h, have fatigue lives that are reduced by more than one order of magnitude after 384 h pre-corrosion as compared to those of uncorroded specimens. The reduction in fatigue life is interpreted in terms of the influence of the time of exposure to the corrosive environment or pit size. The crack-nucleating pit sizes, ranging from 20 to 70 ,m, are determined from post-fracture examinations by scanning electron microscopy. Fatigue lives are estimated using a fracture mechanics approach and are shown to be in good agreement with the actual data. A probabilistic analysis shows that the distribution of fatigue life is strongly correlated to the distribution in nucleating pit size. [source]


    Conductivity and Methanol Permeability of Nafion,Zirconium Phosphate Composite Membranes Containing High Aspect Ratio Filler Particles,

    Abstract Gels of exfoliated ,-zirconium phosphate (ZrPexf) in dimethylformamide (DMF) were used to prepare Nafion/ZrPexf composite membranes with filler loadings up to 7,wt.-% by casting mixtures of Nafion 1100 solutions in DMF and suitable amounts of 2,wt.-% ZrP gels in DMF. TEM pictures showed that the ZrPexf particles had aspect ratio of at least 20. All samples were characterised by methanol permeability (P) and through-plane (,thp) and in-plane (,inp) conductivity measurements at 40,°C and 100% RH. The methanol permeability of Nafion membranes containing in situ grown ZrP particles with low aspect ratio (Nafion/ZrPisg) was also determined. The methanol permeability and the swelling behaviour of the composite membranes turned out to be strongly dependent on the filler morphology. As a general trend, both permeability and swelling decreased according to the sequence: Nafion/ZrPisg > Nafion > Nafion/ZrPexf. The maximum selectivity (,thp/P,=,1.4,×,105,S,cm,3,s) was found for the membrane filled with 1,wt.-% ZrPexf: this value is seven times higher than that of Nafion. For the Nafion/ZrPexf membranes, the ratio ,inp/,thp increases with the filler loading, thus indicating that the preferred orientation of the ZrP sheets is parallel to the membrane surface.     Evolution of Permanent Deformations (or Memory) in Nafion 117 Membranes with Changes in Temperature, Relative Humidity and Time, and Its Importance in the Development of Medium Temperature PEMFCs,

    Abstract An important problem for medium temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (MT PEMFCs) operating in the temperature range 90,140,°C is the short time-life of proton conducting membranes. To shed some light on the empirical annealing treatments used for increasing the membrane durability, a systematic research on the effects of thermal treatments of Nafion 117 membranes was undertaken with the hope that the information obtained could be useful for a better understanding of the real limits for MT PEMFCs. Kinetic experiments showed that, for each couple of T,RH values, the water taken up from the membrane reaches a constant value only after long times of equilibration (,200,h). Taking into account that the enlargements provoked by the water-uptake remain as permanent deformations when the samples are cooled, it was found that the evolution of the deformations provoked by changes in temperature and RH can be conveniently estimated at 20,°C by determining the water taken up after equilibration in liquid water. By relating the counter-elastic index of the matrix (nc(m)) to the extent of these deformations, a set of equations were obtained which allowed us to predict their evolution with changes of temperature and relative humidity. A good agreement with experimental values was found. The importance of this discovery for the development of MT PEMFCs is discussed. [source]


    Trends and methodological impacts in soil CO2 efflux partitioning: A metaanalytical review

    Abstract Partitioning soil carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux (RS) into autotrophic (RA; including plant roots and closely associated organisms) and heterotrophic (RH) components has received considerable attention, as differential responses of these components to environmental change have profound implications for the soil and ecosystem C balance. The increasing number of partitioning studies allows a more detailed analysis of experimental constraints than was previously possible. We present results of an exhaustive literature search of partitioning studies and analyse global trends in flux partitioning between biomes and ecosystem types by means of a metaanalysis. Across all data, an overall decline in the RH/RS ratio for increasing annual RS fluxes emerged. For forest ecosystems, boreal coniferous sites showed significantly higher (P<0.05) RH/RS ratios than temperate sites, while both temperate or tropical deciduous forests did not differ in ratios from any of the other forest types. While chronosequence studies report consistent declines in the RH/RS ratio with age, no difference could be detected for different age groups in the global data set. Different methodologies showed generally good agreement if the range of RS under which they had been measured was considered, with the exception of studies estimating RH by means of root mass regressions against RS, which resulted in consistently lower RH/RS estimates out of all methods included. Additionally, the time step over which fluxes were partitioned did not affect RH/RS ratios consistently. To put results into context, we review the most common techniques and point out the likely sources of errors associated with them. In order to improve soil CO2 efflux partitioning in future experiments, we include methodological recommendations, and also highlight the potential interactions between soil components that may be overlooked as a consequence of the partitioning process itself.     Hepatitis C virus load and survival among injection drug users in the United States,

    Persons chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), some of whom may be coinfected with HIV and human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II), are at high risk for end-stage liver disease (ESLD). We evaluated whether ESLD death was associated with premorbid HCV RNA level or specific HCV protein antibodies among persons with or without HIV/HTLV-II coinfection in a cohort of 6,570 injection drug users who enrolled in 9 US cities between 1987 and 1991. We compared 84 ESLD descendents and 305 randomly selected cohort participants with detectable HCV RNA, stratified by sex, race, HIV, and HTLV-II strata. Relative hazard (RH) of ESLD death was derived from the proportional hazard model. Risk of ESLD death was unrelated to the intensity of antibodies against the HCV c-22(p), c-33(p), c-100(p), and NS5 proteins, individually or combined, but it increased with HCV RNA level (RHadj= 2.26 per log10 IU/mL, 95% CI: 1.45-5.92). The association between HCV RNA level and ESLD death remained significant after adjustment for alcohol consumption (RHadj= 2.57 per log10 IU/mL, 95% CI: 1.50-8.10). Deaths from AIDS (n = 45) and other causes (n = 43) were unrelated to HCV RNA (RHadj= 1.14 and 1.29 per log10 IU/mL, respectively). HIV infection was not associated with ESLD risk in multivariate analyses adjusted for HCV RNA. Men had an increased risk of ESLD death in unadjusted analyses (RH = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.15-3.56) but not in multivariate analysis (RHadj= 0.98, 95% CI: 0.48-2.88). Non-black patients were at increased risk for ESLD death (RHadj= 2.76, 95% CI: 1.49-10.09). In conclusion, HCV RNA level is a predictor of ESLD death among persons with chronic HCV infection.     The mirror-neuron system and handedness: A "right" world?

    Abstract To assess the relationship between the mirror-neuron system (MNS), an observation-execution matching system, and handedness, we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging from 11 right-handed (RH) and eight left-handed (LH) subjects to identify regions involved in processing action (execution and observation) of the right and left upper limbs. During the execution tasks, LH subjects had a more bilateral pattern of activation than RH. An interaction between handedness and hand observed during the observation conditions was detected in several areas of the MNS and the motor system. The within- and between-groups analyses confirmed different lateralizations of the MNS and motor system activations in RH and LH subjects during the observation tasks of the dominant and nondominant limbs. The comparison of the execution vs. observation task demonstrated that during the execution task with their dominant limbs, RH subjects activated areas of the motor system in the left hemisphere, whereas LH subjects also activated areas of the MNS. During the execution task with the nondominant limbs, both groups activated regions of the MNS and motor system. Albeit this study is based on a small sample, the patterns of MNS activations observed in RH and LH subjects support the theory that suggests that this system is involved in brain functions lateralization. In LH people, this system might contribute to their adaptation to a world essentially built for right-handers through a mechanism of mirroring and imitation.     Effects of transdermal nicotine on lateralized identification and memory interference

    Abstract It has been proposed that nicotine may enhance performance on tasks requiring primarily left hemisphere (LH) resources while impairing right hemisphere (RH)-based performance. However, this hypothesis has not been directly tested using a lateralized cognitive task. The effects of transdermal nicotine administration on lateralized consonant identification and memory interference were examined in dependent smokers and never-smokers. In a double-blind placebo-controlled design, smokers (n,=,24) and never-smokers (n,=,24) were assigned to receive a nicotine or placebo patch. Subjects completed a lateralized letter identification task that required them to identify strings of three consonants presented in the left or right visual field while keeping a word in memory. A distinct right-visual-field (RVF) advantage was observed for consonant identification, but this effect was unaltered by nicotine or smoking status. However, nicotine decreased word memory errors on trials where consonants were presented in the RVF and increased errors on LVF trials. Nicotine may enhance LH-based cognitive performance by increasing LH cognitive resources or by reducing the influence of RVF distracting stimuli.     Infiltration into effluent irrigation-induced repellent soils and the dependence of repellency on ambient relative humidity

    Abstract As a result of water scarcity and as a means of wastewater disposal, reuse of treated sewage effluent in irrigated agriculture is practiced worldwide. Among the detrimental aspects of wastewater re-use in agriculture is the possibility that soils will be rendered water repellent. The current study focuses on time dependent variation of infiltration rate in effluent-induced repellent soils, and time dependent variation in water repellency at different levels of ambient relative humidity (RH). The shape of the cumulative infiltration curve of water was found to depend on the repellency degree (concave for wettable and slightly repellent soils, convex for severely repellent soil). Compared with infiltration rates in the wettable and slightly repellent soils, infiltration rates in the severely repellent soil were very low at the beginning and then increased. When the liquid-vapor surface tension was reduced by means of ethanol addition to the infiltrating solution, the cumulative infiltration curve of the severely repellent soil also became concave. Repellency degree (as measured by WDPT) was found to be essentially constant over a large range of ambient RH values (<10 , ,81%), and to increase sharply at values above 90%. The relative increase in water drop penetration time (WDPT) at high RH was greatest for the least repellent soil (10-fold increase in WDPT), and least for the most repellent soil (2-fold increase in WDPT). At RH > 90%, the time to reach equilibrium with respect to WDPT and soil moisture content was similar. In contrast, at values of ambient RH ranging from < 10 to 81%, WDPT was invariant over the course of reaching equilibrium with respect to moisture content.     Influence of water absorption on high-frequency characteristics of insulation layers of printed circuit boards

    Abstract The influence of water absorption on complex permittivities of various insulating materials used for printed circuit boards was investigated in the frequency range of K-band (18,26 GHz). Experimental results revealed that the influence of water absorption on complex permittivity, the dielectric loss factor tan,, in particular, was considerably high. For example, the dielectric loss of polyimide film at 85°C, 85% RH became 10 times larger than that at room temperature and humidity. Since the complex permittivities, however, retained the initial values when the specimens are dried, the water in the specimen should exist freely at the internal interfaces of the materials. The increase of permittivity directly affects the performance of printed circuit boards at high frequencies, so that it is important to clarify the influence of water on dielectric properties of insulations.     Effect of five diatomaceous earth formulations against Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) and Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae)

    Abstract Laboratory bioassays were conducted to determine the effect of food source on the survival of Tribolium castaneum Herbst, Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. and Rhyzopertha dominica F., after exposure to five diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations: Protect-It®, Insecto®, Perma-GuardŌ, Dryacide® and SilicoSec®. Adults of these species were exposed to DEs at the rate of 0.5 mg/cm2 for 1 day on filter paper inside plastic Petri dishes. After exposure, the initial mortality was counted and live individuals of the three species were held for a week in glass vials containing 50 mg wheat flour, rice and whole wheat, respectively. In the second experiment, after 1 day exposure to DEs, beetles were transferred to Petri dishes without food and held for a week to determine if the presence of food source would decrease the mortality of beetles. Experiments were carried out at 27°C and 55% RH in the dark. The initial mortality in both of the experiments reached 100% for the three species exposed to Protect-It® and in the case of R. dominica and O. surinamensis exposed to Dryacide®. In contrast, low level of mortality (< 10%) was observed for T. castaneum exposed to Perma-GuardŌ and Insecto®. The mortality after the post-treatment period on food was decreased for the three species exposed to Perma-GuardŌ and in the case of T. castaneum and R. dominica exposed to Insecto® and SilicoSec®. Adults of O. surinamensis were the most susceptible followed by R. dominica and 100% adult mortality was obtained, whereas T. castaneum were the least susceptible beetles to DEs.     EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON CERTAIN POPULATION PARAMETERS OF LIRIOMYZA SATIVAE BLAN-CHARD (DIPTERA: AGROMYZIDAE)

    Abstract, Effects of temperature on population parameters and the intrinsic rate of natural increase of the leafminer, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard, were studied at constant temperatures, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 3593 80% RH and a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D) in the laboratory with Phaseolus vulgaris as the host plant. Developmental time of the immature stage decreased from 38 d at 15C to lld at 3593 Regression equations relating temperature (t) to development rates (y) for egg, larval and pupal stages, were y = 1.7862t - 13.841, y = 1.162t - 4.946 and y= 0.634t - 5.146, respectively. Longevity of female adult decreased from 20 d at 15°C to 9 d with temperature up to 35C The most favorable temperature range for reproduction was 20°C - 30oC in which the fecundity ranged from 158 to 282 eggs per female. The lowest total mortality was 9% at 25oC and the highest was 49% at 35 93 High intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was 0.27 and high net reproductive rate (R0) was 116.8 at temperature range between 25 t and 30 t indicating that this range was optimal for population growth and that population density might increase 117 times per generation under this temperature condition. Mean generation time (T) and time for population to double (t) decreased as temperature increased, showing a negative linear trend with temperature. The relationship between finite rate of increase (A) and temperature, however, was a positive linear regression. [source]


    Use of real-time FT-IR monitoring of a pharmaceutical compound under stress atmospheric conditions to characterize its solid-state degradation kinetics

    The use of online FT-IR is described for investigating the degradation kinetics of the solid amorphous pharmaceutical compound, fosaprepitant dimeglumine (FD), under stress storage conditions (i.e., high temperature, T, and humidity, % RH). It is found that under conditions of elevated T and % RH, the kinetics are denucleation rate limited for the deliquescence of the amorphous FD solid, based on the high quality fits obtained to the authors' dispersive kinetic model for that mechanism. At elevated T and low % RH, it is found that a classical, first-order hydrolysis mechanism for the degradation of FD (which forms crystalline aprepitant, AP) significantly contributes to the overall conversion rate. That mechanism is similar to the one observed previously for the solution-phase hydrolysis of FD.     Humidity parameters from temperature: test of a simple methodology for European conditions

    Abstract Atmospheric water content is important for local and regional climate, and for chemical processes of soluble and solute species in the atmosphere. Further, vapour pressure deficit (D) is one of the key controls on the opening of stomata in plants and is thus an important force for evapotransporation, plant respiration and biomass production and for the uptake of harmful pollutants such as ozone through the stomata. Most meteorological stations typically measure both temperature and relative humidity (RH). However, even if recorded at finer time resolution, it is usually the daily or often monthly means of RH which are published in climate reports. Unfortunately, such data cannot be used to obtain the changes in RH or vapour pressure deficit over the day, as this depends strongly on the diurnal temperature variation during the day and not upon the mean temperature. Although RH typically changes significantly over the day, the ambient vapour pressure is often remarkably constant. Here a simple method to estimate diurnal vapour pressure is evaluated, based upon an assumed constant vapour pressure, and that recorded minimum temperatures approximate dew-point temperatures. With a knowledge of only temperature, we will show that day to day estimates of vapour pressure, humidity and especially D, can be made with reasonable accuracy. This methodology is tested using meteorological data from 32 sites covering a range of locations in Europe. Such a simple methodology may be used to extract approximate diurnal curves of vapour pressures from published meteorological data which contains only minimum temperatures for each day, or where humidity data are not available.     Use of therapeutic responses to glucose replacement to predict glucose patterns in diabetic patients presenting with severe hypoglycaemia

    Summary Objective:, The purpose of this study was to determine whether initial serum glucose levels, therapeutic responses to intravenous glucose replacement and changes in serum glucose levels over time could predict serum glucose patterns. Methods:, The patients enrolled in this retrospective chart review had been previously diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and were later hospitalised for severe hypoglycaemia (SH). They were all admitted to the emergency department (ED) during a 4-year period between January 2003 and December 2006. Comparison of the therapeutic responses to glucose replacement according to the serum glucose patterns [categorised into recurrent hypoglycaemia (RH), overshoot hyperglycaemia (OH) and favourable groups] during the first 48 h was performed. Results:, Compared with the favourable group, therapeutic responses to glucose replacement were significantly lower in the RH group and higher in the OH group; the changes in serum glucose levels over time were also significantly lower in the RH group and higher in the OH group. Conclusion:, Therapeutic responses to glucose replacement and changes in serum glucose levels over time can differentiate diabetic patients with RH and OH from those with favourable glucose patterns during the first 48 h after presentation in the ED with SH. We believe that a ,response-to-treatment' based strategy is useful in determining the ED disposition of diabetic patients presenting with SH. [source]


    Effect of washing with citric acid and antioxidants on the colour and microbiological quality of whole mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus L.)

    Summary The effect of washing with citric acid followed by anti-browning treatment involving rinsing with sodium d -isoascorbate or sodium l -ascorbate on the colour, microbiological quality and bacterial blotch of whole mushrooms when stored at 5 °C for up to 13 days at 80% RH was evaluated. Washing with 1% citric acid reduced Pseudomonas counts avoiding bacterial blotch, but caused an important deterioration of colour. When washing with citric acid was followed by an anti-browning treatment, mushrooms colour was improved, at the same time as bacterial blotch was reduced, although the decrease of Pseudomonas counts was smaller than in mushrooms washed only with citric acid. The most effective treatment was washing with 1% citric acid followed by anti-browning treatment with 1.5% sodium l -ascorbate. [source]


    Degradative enzymatic activities in fresh-cut blood-orange slices during chilled-storage

    Summary Blood-orange fruits are suitable to fresh-cut fruit production because of their chemical compositions. Nevertheless, the main limitation of using freshly cut oranges is their susceptibility to juiciness loss and ascorbic acid degradation because of enzymatic alterations. The aim of this work is: to identify some of the enzymes causing the qualitative decay in blood-orange slices during 15 days of chilled storage (at 4 ± 0.5 °C and 85% RH); to investigate the susceptibility to the previous alterations of five blood-orange clones (Moro nucellare, Sanguinello nucellare, Tarocco arcimusa, Tarocco gallo and Tarocco meli) to select the most suitable one for fresh-cut production. The enzymes studied were: pectinmethylesterase (PME) as index of juiciness loss, ascorbate oxidase (AAO) as index of ascorbic acid's degradation and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) as browning index. As far as we know, the changes of AAO activity during chilled storage of blood-orange fresh-cut slices has not previously reported and studied. Different clones showed different enzymatic activities and quality changes during chilled-storage. In particular a low juiciness loss in orange slices was correlated with a lower PME activity, as described in T. meli clone, while a high degradation of ascorbic acid was correlated with an higher AAO activity, as described in T. gallo clone; PPO activity seemed to have no significant action in quality degradation. Tarocco meli was the most suitable clone to the fresh-cut blood-orange production because it has the lowest enzymatic activity (PME, PPO and AAO) and the highest sensorial quality. [source]


    Effect of temperature and initial moisture content on sorption isotherms of banana dried by tunnel drier

    Summary Sorption isotherms of intermediate moisture content (IMC) products are essential to predict shelf-life of packaged moisture-sensitive product by modelling moisture uptake during storage and distribution. The effect of temperature and initial moisture content (MC) of IMC banana on the relationship between MC and water activity were investigated. Raw bananas were dried in a tunnel dryer at 2% relative humidity (RH), 70 °C, and a 3.2 ± 0.2 m s,1 air velocity. Drying procedure was carried out a number of times until various IMC levels were obtained (5%, 14%, 22% and 33% db for banana). Sorption isotherms of bananas were determined at 10, 20, 30 and 40 °C. The initial MC of IMC banana had no significant effect on the relationship between MC and water activity according to statistical analysis. All the sorption curves were found to be Type II. BET, GAB, modified GAB, Oswin, Halsey and modified Freundlich models were fitted to the data and it was found that the best results were obtained with a modified Freundlich equation. A secondary modified Freundlich model was built accounting for the effect of aw and temperature on the sample MC. [source]


    Single-layer drying characteristics and colour kinetics of red chilli

    Summary Single-layer drying experiments were conducted under controlled conditions of temperature, relative humidity (RH) and air velocity to find out the effects of drying conditions and blanching on the drying rate and colour of Thai red chilli. Drying rate increased with an increase of drying air temperature and a decrease of RH. Air temperatures above 65 °C affected the colour of red chilli. Red chilli should be dried at an air velocity equal to or just above 0.50 m s,1. Above this value, the drying rate becomes independent of air velocity. RH and air velocity have no effect on the colour of red chilli. Faster drying rate and higher colour value was found for the blanched sample rather than the unblanched sample. The Newton and the Page equations were fitted to the experimental data. The Newton equation was found to describe the single-layer drying of red chilli better than the Page equation. [source]


    The effect of drying conditions on the development of the hard-to-cook defect in steam-treated cowpeas

    Summary A three-factor,three-level Box,Behnken design was used to evaluate the effect of drying time, temperature and humidity on textural and physicochemical characteristics during storage of steamed cowpeas. The treatment significantly improved cooked texture and prevented hardening during storage under severe conditions (42 °C/80% relative humidity, RH). Before storage, the cooked texture of treated samples was between 535,628 and 602 N for the untreated control, and between 516,649 and 1394 N after storage at 42 °C/80% RH. The peak force of stored cowpeas significantly decreased as the drying temperature increased. Steaming and drying reduced phytase activity to 59,64% of the original activity and decreased phytate content from 0.133% to 0.074,0.105%. Drying time had a significant effect on phytase activity whereas all drying parameters significantly affected phytate concentration and water absorption. The drying conditions applied after steaming significantly influences seed characteristics; therefore, selection of optimum drying conditions may be used to control seed quality, especially texture.     Are reproductive health NGOs in Uganda able to engage in the health SWAp?

    Abstract This paper explores the ability for reproductive health (RH) non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Uganda to survive in the context of SWAp and decentralization. The authors argue that, contrary to the perceptions that this context may increase NGO's financial vulnerability, a SWAp and a decentralized system may provide an opportunity that should be embraced by NGOs to enhance their sustainability and effectiveness by reducing their current dependency on donor funding. The paper discusses the systemic weaknesses of many NGOs that currently make them vulnerable, and observes that unless these weaknesses are addressed, such NGOs will lose their space in the SWAp and decentralization arena. The authors suggest that NGOs need to recognize the opportunities that participating in public-private partnerships through a SWAp can offer them for long-term and significant funding. They need also to develop their capacity to pro-actively participate in a SWAp and decentralized context by becoming more entrepreneurial in nature, through re-orienting their organizational philosophies and strategic planning and budgeting so as to be able to partner effectively with the public sector in accessing funds made available through health sector reform.     Viable but non-culturable Listeria monocytogenes on parsley leaves and absence of recovery to a culturable state

    Abstract Aims:, To investigate the presence of viable but non-culturable Listeria monocytogenes during survival on parsley leaves under low relative humidity (RH) and to evaluate the ability of L. monocytogenes to recover from VBNC to culturable state under satured humidity. Methods and Results:, Under low RH (47,69%) on parsley leaves, the initial number of L. monocytogenes populations counted on non selective media (109 L. monocytogenes per leaf on TSA) was reduced by 6 log10 scales in 15 days, whereas number of viable L. monocytogenes counted under the microscope was reduced by 3,4 log10 scales, indicating the presence of VBNC cells. This was demonstrated on three L. monocytogenes strains (EGDe, Bug 1995 and LmP60). Changing from low to 100% RH permitted an increase of the culturable counts of L. monocytogenes and this growth was observed only when residual culturable cells were present. Moreover, VBNC L. monocytogenes inoculated on parsley leaves did not become culturable after incubation under 100% RH. Conclusions:, Dry conditions induced VBNC L. monocytogenes on parsley leaves but these VBNC were likely unable to recover culturability after transfer to satured humidity. Significance and Impact of Study:, Enumeration on culture media presumably under-estimates the number of viable L. monocytogenes on fresh produce after exposure to low RH. [source]


    Effects of rice husk (RH) particle size, glass fiber (GF) length, RH/GF ratio, and addition of coupling agent on the mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene-RH-GF hybrid composites

    Abstract Polypropylene (PP) hybrid composites based on rice husk (RH) with different particle size and glass fiber (GF) with different length were prepared. The composites were subjected to mechanical and water immersion tests. From the results obtained, it was found that the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites were strongly dependent on the size of RH particle and length of GF. It could be further enhanced with the presence of coupling agent. In this study, two types of coupling agents, i.e., Epolene E-43 (E-43) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propylmethacrylate (TPM), were employed. In general, E-43 imparted significant improvement in the mechanical properties.
