Selected AbstractsA Quantitative Conservation Approach for the Endangered Butterfly Maculinea alconCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2004MICHIEL F. WallisDeVries The quality and size of habitat patches and their isolation from other patches are the main parameters for an assessment of population persistence, but translating persistence probabilities into practical measures is still a weak link in conservation management. I provide a quantitative conservation approach for the endangered myrmecophilous butterfly Maculinea alcon in the Netherlands. All 127 colonies known on heathland since 1990 were investigated for patch quality, size, and isolation. I assessed habitat quality in three 10 × 10 m plots for most colonies. Site occupancy in 1998,1999 was only 56%. Occupancy was best explained by a logistic regression including patch area, host ant presence, host plant abundance, overall heathland area, and connectivity between sites ( R2= 0.410, p < 0.0001); it correctly classified the occupied or vacant status for 82% of the sites. Connectivity contributed only 3.6% to the total explained variation of site occupancy, indicating that habitat characteristics were more important than isolation in determining population persistence at the examined scale level (>500 m). Grazing and sod cutting had a beneficial impact, but in combination these practices proved detrimental. Hydrological measures to prevent drainage were also associated with lowered occupancy. I used the different components in the logistic regression to formulate objective management recommendations. These consisted of sod cutting, reduction of management intensity, enlargement of habitat, or combinations of these recommendations. The results highlight the importance of careful management when site quality is determined by multiple factors. The quantitative conservation approach followed here can be fruitfully extended to other endangered species, provided enough is known about their ecological requirements and how management actions affect them. La calidad y tamaño de los fragmentos de hábitat y su aislamiento de otros fragmentos son los parámetros principales para la evaluación de la persistencia de la población, pero la traducción de probabilidades de persistencia en medidas prácticas aun es un eslabón débil en la gestión de conservación. Proporciono un método cuantitativo de conservación para la mariposa mirmecófila Maculinea alcon en peligro en Holanda. Se investigó a las 127 colonias conocidas en brezales desde 1990 para calidad, tamaño y aislamiento del fragmento. Evalué la calidad del hábitat en tres parcelas de 10 × 10 m en la mayoría de las colonias. La ocupación de sitios en 1998-1999 fue sólo 56%. [source] Decreased hippocampal volume on MRI is associated with increased extracellular glutamate in epilepsy patientsEPILEPSIA, Issue 8 2008Idil Cavus Summary Purpose: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with smaller hippocampal volume and with elevated extracellular (EC) glutamate levels. We investigated the relationship between the hippocampal volume and glutamate in refractory TLE patients. Methods: We used quantitative MRI volumetrics to measure the hippocampal volume and zero-flow microdialysis to measure the interictal glutamate, glutamine, and GABA levels in the epileptogenic hippocampus of 17 patients with medication-resistant epilepsy undergoing intracranial EEG evaluation. The relationships between hippocampal volume, neurochemical levels, and relevant clinical factors were examined. Results: Increased EC glutamate in the epileptogenic hippocampus was significantly related to smaller ipsilateral (R2= 0.75, p < 0.0001), but not contralateral hippocampal volume when controlled for glutamine and GABA levels, and for clinical factors known to influence hippocampal volume. Glutamate in the atrophic hippocampus was significantly higher (p = 0.008, n = 9), with the threshold for hippocampal atrophy estimated as 5 ,M. GABA and glutamine levels in the atrophic and nonatrophic hippocampus were comparable. Decreased hippocampal volume was related to higher seizure frequency (p = 0.008), but not to disease duration or febrile seizure history. None of these clinical factors were related to the neurochemical levels. Conclusions: We provide evidence for a significant association between increased EC glutamate and decreased ipsilateral epileptogenic hippocampal volume in TLE. Future work will be needed to determine whether the increase in glutamate has a causal relationship with hippocampal atrophy, or whether another, yet unknown factor results in both. This work has implications for the understanding and treatment of epilepsy as well as other neurodegenerative disorders associated with hippocampal atrophy. [source] Subtraction SPECT Coregistered to MRI in Focal Malformations of Cortical Development: Localization of the Epileptogenic Zone in Epilepsy Surgery CandidatesEPILEPSIA, Issue 4 2004Terence J. O'Brien Summary: Purpose: To determine the extent to which periictal subtraction single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) may improve detection and definition of the epileptogenic zone in patients with focal malformations of cortical development (MCDs). Methods: Subtraction SPECT coregistered to magnetic resonance (MR) images (SISCOM) were constructed for 22 consecutive patients with focal MCDs who underwent periictal SPECT injection (18 ictal and four postictal). In the 17 patients who had epilepsy surgery, concordance between the site of SISCOM localization and site of surgical resection was determined by coregistration of SISCOM images with postoperative MRIs. Results: SISCOM images were localizing in 19 (86%) patients, including eight of the 10 with nonlocalizing MRI. Concordance of SISCOM localization was 91% with MRI localization, 93% with scalp ictal EEG localization, and 100% with intracranial EEG localization. Eight patients whose SISCOM localization was concordant with the surgical resection site had lower postoperative seizure frequency scores (SFSs; p = 0.04) and greater postoperative improvement in SFSs (p = 0.05) than the nine patients whose SISCOM was either nonconcordant or nonlocalizing. On multiple regression analysis, a model combining SISCOM concordance with surgical resection site and extent of MRI lesion resection was predictive of postoperative SFS (R2= 0.47; p = 0.03). Conclusions: Periictal subtraction SPECT using the SISCOM technique provides useful information for seizure localization in patients with focal MCDs, even when MRI is nonlocalizing. [source] Estimating diesel degradation rates from N2, O2 and CO2 concentration versus depth data in a loamy sandEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2007J. Van De Steene Summary The degradation rate of the pollutant is often an important parameter for designing and maintaining an active treatment system or for determining the rate of natural attenuation. A quasi-steady-state gas transport model based on Fick's law with a correction term for advective flux, for estimating diesel degradation rates from N2, O2 and CO2 concentration versus depth data, was evaluated in a laboratory column study. A loamy sand was spiked with diesel fuel at 0, 1000, 5000 and 10 000 mg kg,1 soil (dry weight basis) and incubated for 15 weeks. Soil gas was sampled weekly at 6 selected depths in the columns and analysed for O2, CO2 and N2 concentrations. The agreement between the measured and the modelled concentrations was good for the untreated soil (R2= 0.60) and very good for the soil spiked with 1000 mg kg,1 (R2= 0.96) and 5000 mg kg,1 (R2= 0.97). Oxygen consumption ranged from ,0.15 to ,2.25 mol O2 m,3 soil day,1 and CO2 production ranged from 0.20 to 2.07 mol CO2 m,3 soil day,1. A significantly greater mean O2 consumption (P < 0.001) and CO2 production (P < 0.005) over time was observed for the soils spiked with diesel compared with the untreated soil, which suggests biodegradation of the diesel substrate. Diesel degradation rates calculated from respiration data were 1.5,2.1 times less than the change in total petroleum hydrocarbon content. The inability of this study to correlate respiration data to actual changes in diesel concentration could be explained by volatilization, long-term sorption of diesel hydrocarbons to organic matter and incorporation of diesel hydrocarbons into microbial biomass, aspects of which require further investigation. [source] Quitting Smoking: Applying an Extended Version of the Theory of PlannedBehavior to Predict Intention and Behavior,JOURNAL OF APPLIED BIOBEHAVIORAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2005Inger Synnøve MOAN This study examined the ability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB)to predict students' intentions to quit smoking and the subsequent behavior6 months later. In addition, the impact of past behavior, moral norms, self-identity, group identity, and positive/negative anticipated affect was examined. The intention-behavior relationship was examined by dividing the sample in four subgroups: inclined actors/abstainers and disinclined actors/abstainers. Analyses were based on data from a prospective sample of 698 smokers. Attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control accounted for 36% (adjusted R2) of the variance in intentions. Moral norms, positive anticipated affect, group identity, and past behavior added 9% (adjusted R2) to the explained variance in intention, beyond the effect accounted for by the TPB components. Subsequent behavior was predicted by intentions (adjusted R2= .12). Past behavior, moral norms, self-identity, and the Past Behavior x Intention and Moral Norm x Negative Affect interactions explained an additional 9% (adjusted R2) of the variance in behavior. Inclined abstainers constituted the main source of the discrepancy between intention and behavior. [source] QT Interval Correction in Patients with CirrhosisJOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 1 2007ANDREA ZAMBRUNI M.D. Introduction: QT interval prolongation is a common electrophysiological abnormality in patients with cirrhosis. As QT interval varies with the heart rate, many QT correction formulas have been proposed, the Bazett's one being the most criticized because it overcorrects the QT interval and may be misleading. This study focused on the QT-RR relationship in patients with cirrhosis to derive a population-specific QT correction formula. Methods: One hundred cirrhotic patients of different etiology and severity and 53 healthy controls comparable for age and sex were enrolled. The QT-RR relationship was analyzed in patients by five regression analysis models to derive the population-specific QT-RR equation. The QTc was calculated and compared with those calculated by four common QT correction formulas (Bazett, Fridericia, Framingham, and Hodges). The correlation coefficient QTc-RR was calculated as a measure of the independence of QTc from the original RR interval. Results: In patients the QT-RR relationship was best described by the power equation "QT = 453.65 × RR1/3.02" (R2= 0.41), similar to the Fridericia's formula. Bazett's formula led to the longest QTc (P < 0.0001), which was still significantly influenced by the RR interval (R =,0.39; P < 0.0001), while the estimated equation led to a QTc value not influenced by RR (R =,0.014). Conclusion: Bazett's correction should be avoided in patients with cirrhosis because it still provides a rate-dependent QTc value and might be misleading, particularly when assessing the overall preoperative cardiac risk and the effect of drugs affecting the QT interval. In its place, our formula or that of Fridericia can be confidently employed. [source] Reentry Site During Fibrillation Induction in Relation to Defibrillation Efficacy for Different Shock WaveformsJOURNAL OF CARDIOVASCULAR ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 5 2001Ph.D., RAYMOND E. IDEKER M.D. Reentry Site and Defibrillation Waveform Efficacy.Introduction: Unsuccessful defibrillation shocks may reinitiate fibrillation by causing postshock reentry. Methods and Results: To better understand why some waveforms are more efficacious for defibrillation, reentry was induced in six dogs with 1-, 2-, 4-, 8-, and 16-msec monophasic and 1/1- (both phases 1 msec) 2/2-, 4/4-, and 8/8-msec biphasic shocks. Reentry was initiated by 141 ± 15 V shocks delivered from a defibrillator with a 150- , F capacitance during the vulnerable period of paced rhythm (183 ± 12 msec after the last pacing stimulus). The shock potential gradient field was orthogonal to the dispersion of refractoriness. Activation was mapped with 121 electrodes covering 4 × 4 cm of the right ventricular epicardium, and potential gradient and degree of recovery of excitability were estimated at the sites of reentry. Defibrillation thresholds (DFTs) were estimated by an up-down protocol for the same nine waveforms in eight dogs internally and in nine other dogs externally. DFT voltages for the different waveforms were positively correlated with the magnitude of shock potential gradient and negatively correlated with the recovery interval at the site at which reentry was induced by the waveform during paced rhythm for both internal (DFT = 1719 + 64.5 , V , 11.1RI; R2= 0.93) and external defibrillation (DFT = 3445 + 150 , V , 22RI; R2= 0.93). Conclusion: The defibrillation waveforms with the lowest DFTs were those that induced reentry at sites of low shock potential gradient, indicating efficacious stimulation of myocardium. Additionally, the site of reentry induced by waveforms with the lowest DFTs was in myocardium that was more highly recovered just before the shock, perhaps because this high degree of recovery seldom occurs during defibrillation due to the rapid activation rate during fibrillation. EZEIKE Several studies of acidic electrolyzed (EO) water demonstrated the efficacy of EO water for inactivation of different foodborne pathogens and reported on the chemical species present in EO water. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of production parameters (voltage, NaCl concentration, flow rate, and temperature) on the properties of EO water and to model the complex reactions occurring during the generation of EO water. At 0.1% salt concentration, EO water was produced at 2, 10, and 28 V. However, due to high conductivity of the electrolyte at 0.5% salt concentration, the voltage applied across the cell was limited to 7 V. The electrolyte flow rate was set at 0.5, 2.5, and 4.5 L/mn. For pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), NaCl concentration was the most significant factor followed by voltage, electrolyte flow rate and temperature, respectively. However, in the case of residual chlorine, flow rate was relatively more important than voltage. Response surface methodology yielded models to predict EO water properties as functions of the process parameters studied, with very high coefficients of determination (R2= 0.872 to 0.938). In general, the higher the NaCl concentration and voltage, the higher the ORP and residual chlorine of EO water. Increased electrolyte flow rate will produce EO water with lower ORP and residual chlorine due to the shorter residence time in the electrolytic cell. [source] STUDY OF SAGO STARCH (METROXYLON SAGU) GELATINIZATION BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRYJOURNAL OF FOOD PROCESSING AND PRESERVATION, Issue 2 2001YAAKOB B. CHE MAN Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), at various heating rates (1,30C/min) and water:starch ratios (0.1:1,4:1), was used to study gelatinization phenomena of sago starch. The results showed that the gelatinization temperature and enthalpy (, H) of starches in excess water were 60,77C and 15.5,15.8 J/g, respectively. , H of gelatinization remained substantially the same at excess water contents, but decreased significantly beyond a water:starch ratio of 1.3:1. A single endothermic transition (G) that transformed into a double endotherm (G and M1) and only M1 occurred, respectively, at excess, intermediate and limited water contents. At 50% water content, evidence of the M1 endotherm was observed, and 85C represented the effective conclusion temperature (Tm) at the end of melting for sago starch. The experimental data were treated thermody-namically by applying an equation describing phase transitions of semi-crystalline polymers. The calculated value for the melting point of the undiluted polymer (Tm) was 432 K (R2= 0.96). [source] CONSUMER ACCEPTABILITY, SENSORY AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS OF PEANUT SOY SPREADSJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 1 2003N.J. DUBOST ABSTRACT Textural properties of commercial peanut butter, commercial soy nut spread and three formulated peanut soy spreads with 8, 14, and 20% isolated soy protein were characterized using the Texture Analyser TA.TX2® Significant differences were found between the textural parameters of the treatments (,=0.05). Testing of color, aroma and textural attributes by a descriptive analysis panel indicated significant differences existed between the treatments. Based on consumer acceptability testing using a three-point acceptability scale, the three peanut soy spreads were acceptable products. A mathematical relationship (R2= 0.5) existed between the sensory descriptor aroma and consumer acceptability, and between superior quality (tastes great) and aroma and mouthcoating. No significant relationships were observed between instrumental and consumer acceptability testing. [source] Antioxidant Properties of Edible Basidiomycete,Phellinus igniarius,in Submerged CulturesJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 1 2010Ming Yeou Lung ABSTRACT:, Dried mycelia and mycelia-free broths produced by submerged cultures of,Phellinus igniarius,under optimal culture conditions were extracted using methanol and hot water and investigated for antioxidant properties. Methanolic extracts from dried mycelia (MEM) and mycelia-free broth (MEB) showed significant antioxidant properties for all EC50 values less than 10 mg/mL except for MEB in scavenging effects on DPPH radicals. Hot water extracts from dried mycelia (HWEM) were evidenced by their low EC50 values (<10 mg/mL) to be effective in reducing power, chelating effect on ferrous ions, and scavenging effect on superoxide anions. ,-tocopherol was mainly found in MEM and ,-tocopherol in MEB. Ascorbic acid and total flavonoids were abundant in methanolic extracts (MEM + MEB), whereas total phenols were rich in HWEM. An excellent correlation between contents of total phenols and EC50 values was accomplished for antioxidant activity (R2= 0.996) and chelating ferrous ions ability (R2= 0.922). Practical Application: In our paper, the products by submerged culture of,Phellinus igniarius,exhibited powerful antioxidant properties. Results told that extracts from fermenting products by,P. igniarius,might be good sources for antioxidant-related functional foods and pharmaceutical industries. [source] Flavor Variability and Flavor Stability of U.S.-Produced Whole Milk PowderJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 7 2009M.A. Lloyd ABSTRACT:, Flavor variability and stability of U.S.-produced whole milk powder (WMP) are important parameters for maximizing quality and global competitiveness of this commodity. This study characterized flavor and flavor stability of domestic WMP. Freshly produced (<1 mo) WMP was collected from 4 U.S. production facilities 5 times over a 1 y period. Each sample was analyzed initially and every 2 mo for sensory profile, volatiles, color, water activity, and moisture through 12 mo storage. Selected volatiles were quantified using solid phase microextraction (SPME) with gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry: dimethyl sulfide, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, hexanal, 2-heptanone, heptanal, 1-octen-3-ol, octanal, 3-octen-2-one, and nonanal. Multiple linear regression with backwards elimination was applied to generate equations to predict grassy and painty flavors based on selected volatiles. All WMP were between 2% and 3% moisture and 0.11 and 0.25 water activity initially. WMP varied in initial flavor profiles with varying levels of cooked, milk fat, and sweet aromatic flavors. During storage, grassy and painty flavors developed while sweet aromatic flavor intensities decreased (P,< 0.05). Painty and grassy flavors were confirmed by increased levels (P,< 0.05) of lipid oxidation products such as hexanal, heptanal, and octanal. Hexanal, 2-heptanone, 1-octen-3-ol, and nonanal concentrations were best predictors of grassy flavor (R2= 0.38,,P,< 0.0001) while hexanal, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, octanal, and 3-octen-2-one concentrations were best predictors of painty flavor (R2= 0.61,,P,< 0.0001). These results provide baseline information to determine specific factors that can be controlled to optimize U.S. WMP flavor and flavor stability. [source] Modeling the Effect of Marination and Temperature on Salmonella Inactivation during Drying of Beef JerkyJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 4 2009Yohan Yoon ABSTRACT:, This study modeled the effect of drying temperature in combination with predrying marination treatments to inactivate Salmonella on beef jerky. Beef inside round slices were inoculated with Salmonella and treated with (1) nothing (C), (2) traditional marinade (M), or (3) dipped into a 5% acetic acid solution for 10 min before exposure to M (AM). After 24 h of marination at 4 °C, samples were dehydrated at 52, 57, or 63 °C. Total counts (tryptic soy agar supplemented with 0.1% sodium pyruvate, TSAP) and Salmonella (XLD agar) were enumerated after inoculation and at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h during drying. For calculation of death rates (DR, log CFU/cm2/h), shoulder period (h), low asymptote, and upper asymptote, cell counts from TSAP were fitted to the Baranyi model. The DRs were then further expressed as a function of storage temperature. Inactivation occurred without an initial lag phase (shoulder period), while correlation (R2) values of fitted curves were , 0.861. The DRs of C (,0.29 to ,0.62) and M (,0.36 to ,0.63) treatments were similar, while DRs of the AM treatment were higher (,1.22 to ,1.46). The DRs were then fitted to a polynomial equation as a function of temperature. After validation, good (C and M) or acceptable (AM) model performances were observed (R2= 0.954 to 0.987; bias factors: 1.03 [C], 1.01 [M], 0.71 [AM]; accuracy factors: 1.05 [C], 1.06 [M], 1.41 [AM]). The developed models may be useful in selecting drying temperatures and times in combination with predrying treatments for adequate inactivation of Salmonella in beef jerky. [source] Radical Scavenging Activity and Phenolic Compounds in Persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. cv. Mopan)JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 1 2008X.N. Chen ABSTRACT:, The Mopan persimmon (Diospyros kaki L. cv. Mopan) is the major cultivar of astringent persimmon in northern China. This study investigates the radical scavenging activity against ABTS and DPPH radical, and the content of total and individual phenolics (catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and gallic acid) with apple, grape, and tomato as controls. The radical scavenging activities against ABTS and DPPH radicals of the Mopan persimmon are 23.575 and 22.597 ,m trolox eq/g f.w., respectively. These findings suggest that the Mopan persimmon's antioxidant activity is significantly (P < 0.05) stronger than that of reference materials. The Mopan persimmon showed the highest content of total phenolics among the 4 materials tested. Significant correlations (R2= 0.993, P < 0.05, ABTS radical; R2= 0.980, P < 0.05, DPPH radical) are found between the total phenolics and the radical scavenging activities. The total content of these 6 kinds of phenolics (catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and gallic acid) is significantly correlated (R2= 0.831, P < 0.05, ABTS radical; R2= 0.745, P < 0.05, DPPH radical) with the individual radical scavenging activity of the 4 materials, although the total content of the 6 phenolics accounts for no more than 20% of the total phenolics in the Mopan persimmon. Gallic acid exhibits the strongest antioxidant activity in all 6 kinds of phenolics and its content is the largest in the Mopan persimmon, presumably being responsible for its much higher antioxidant activity as compared to apple, grape, and tomato. [source] Relationship between Postmortem Changes and Browning of Boiled, Dried, and Seasoned Product Made from Japanese Common Squid (Tedarodes pacificus) Mantle MuscleJOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE, Issue 1 2007Yuji Omura ABSTRACT:, To clarify the process that possibly causes discoloration in boiled, dried, and seasoned squid products ("sakiika" or "ikakun" in Japanese), we investigated the relationship of squid freshness with the rate of browning using the boiled, freeze-dried, and ground squid product model. ATP and its related compounds in Japanese common squid (Tedarodes pacificus) decomposed gradually during storage, yielding hypoxanthine and ribose at 24 h postmortem. The browning rate of the model during preservation as revealed by the increase of the b* value showed a high coefficient in the linear regression against ribose content (R2= 0.767). Only the model made from the squid stored for 24 h postmortem turned brown. These results strongly suggest that ribose produced during storage plays a major role in the browning of dried and seasoned squid products. Flores ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to develop empirical models that describe the amount and distribution of ground beef contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 when a contaminated beef trim is introduced into a batch of uncontaminated beef before processing in a mid-size commercial grinder (34 g/s). A beef trim was inoculated with a rifampacin-resistant strain of E. coli O157:H7 and added to a batch of noncontaminated trims at the grinding step. To study the distribution of the E. coli O157:H7rif in the ground beef, 6 treatments with different inoculum levels (1 to 6 log10 colony-forming units [CFU]) were tested. Removal or pick up of the residual contamination with E. coli O157:H7rif left in the grinder was evaluated. E. coli O157:H7rif was detected in 9% to 86% of the total ground beef for the 1 to 6 log10 CFU inoculum levels, respectively. E. coli O157:H7rif contamination was detected in the collar that fixes the grinder's die and blade to the hub. An exponential algorithm described the relationship between the quantities of ground beef containing E. coli O157:H7rif and the inoculum level (R2= 0.82). Distribution models based on a Chi-squared algorithm were developed for each inoculum level describing the contamination level as a function of the batch fraction processed (R2= 0.81 to 0.99). The results of this study corroborate that when beef processors test for pathogenic contamination in a mid-scale grinder, they should test the beef residues in the collar that fixes the grinder's die and blade to the hub. Internal preference mapping (R2= 0.99) showed that flavor was the most important attribute to consumer overall acceptance followed by texture and appearance. The basic salt attribute and aftertaste attributes of salt, raw masa, and toasted grain aftertastes were important to consumer flavor acceptance, and the attributes of crispness, loose particles, hardness and oily/greasy film were responsible for consumer acceptance of texture. GRUENSTEIN M.D. Purpose: In circulations with pulsatile pulmonary artery flow the pulmonary venous wedge pressure (PVWp) has been validated as a good estimate of pulmonary artery pressure (PAp), when PAp is low. The purpose of this study was to validate PVWp estimates of PAp in the less-pulsatile pulmonary circulation of children after bidirectional Glenn shunts. Methods: A retrospective study was performed of 22 simultaneous measurements of PVWp and PAp made during 20 catheterizations in 19 children who had undergone bidirectional Glenn procedures. The PAp was measured directly from the branch PA ipsilateral to the side of the PVWp, or in the SVC. Pulmonary resistance (Rp) was calculated with both PAp and PVWp, to assess the impact of PAp estimates on Rp determinations. Results: Patients ranged in age from 5 months to 10.7 years. There were a variety of univentricular cardiac malformations in the study group. Two children had antegrade pulmonary blood flow in addition to a bidirectional Glenn shunt. The mean PAp ranged from 4 to 14 mmHg, while mean PVWp ranged from 3 to 15 mmHg. Mean PVWp never differed from mean PAp by more than 3 mmHg. There was a significant linear relation between mean PAp and PVWp: PAp = 0.86 (PVWp) + 2.0 (R2= 0.89; P < 0.0001). PVWp provided a good approximation of PAp regardless of the presence (n = 2) or absence (n = 19) of antegrade pulmonary flow. There was a good linear correlation between the Rp calculated by both methods (RpPAp = 0.9 (RpVWp) + 0.5; R2= 0.74; P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The mean PVWp provides a close approximation of mean PAp in children with a bidirectional Glenn shunt and provides valuable hemodynamic information in cases where direct PAp measurements are unavailable. Mok MD ABSTRACT Background and Purpose. Controversies still exist as to the neuroimaging determinants of cognitive impairment in cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). The authors studied the neuroimaging correlates of cognitive performances among patients with stroke associated with SVD. Methods. The authors per formed cerebral computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and diffusion-weighted imaging among 74 consecu tive patients admitted to the acute stroke unit because of stroke associated with SVD. They examined the association between cognitive performances and the following neuroimaging features: volume of white matter changes (WMC), multiplicity of lacunae, location of lacunae, total cerebral atrophy, and frontal and medial temporal lobe atrophy. Results. Apart from age and education, univariate linear regression analyses revealed that WMC volume, presence of thalamic lacunae, cerebral atrophy, and left frontal lobe atrophy predicted performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination while WMC volume, presence of thalamic infarcts, cerebral atrophy, and frontal lobe atrophy of both sides predicted performance on the Mattis Dementia Rat ing Scale-Initiation/Preservation subscale. In the multivariate analyses, education (R2= 0.22, P < .001), left frontal lobe atrophy (R2= 0.10, P= .004), and presence of thalamic lacunae (R2= 0.04, P= .049) were found to predict performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination while age (R2= 0.23, P < .001) and presence of thalamic lacunae (R2= 0.08, P= .011) were found to predict performance on the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale-Initiation/Preservation. Conclusions. Among patients with stroke associated with SVD, thalamic lacunae and frontal lobe atrophy are key determinants of cognitive performances. SOLOMON ABSTRACT The changes in the texture of cylindrical samples of potato tissues immersed in water at 60, 70, 80 and 90C for up to 80 min were monitored at each temperature in terms of tangent modulus of elasticity in axial and radial compression tests, and elasticity and viscosity parameters in creep and stress relaxation tests. The magnitude of all mechanical test parameters decreased with an increase in heating time and temperature. The creep and stress relaxation responses of individual potato samples were adequately represented by respective mechanical models (R2= 0.94 to 0.99). The mechanical test parameters followed apparent first-order degradation kinetics due to the effect of thermal softening, and the rate constant was used as an index of the sensitivity of a mechanical test. The radial compression test was relatively more sensitive than the axial test. Based on an overall comparison, the parameters from creep and stress relaxation tests were found to be the most sensitive in describing the textural changes during thermal softening of potatoes. YOO Rheological properties of fermented hot pepper-soybean paste (HPSP) were evaluated at different total solid contents (TS, 43.6-54.7%) and temperatures (10-40C). HPSP samples at 20C are highly shear thinning fluids (n=0.25-0.33) with large magnitudes of Casson yield stresses (106-573 Pa). Consistency index (K) and apparent viscosity (,a,20) increased with increase in TS. Apparent viscosity of HPSP obeyed the Arrhenius temperature relationship. The magnitudes of activation energy (7.6-20.4 kJ/mole) for HPSP increased with increase in TS. A single equation, combining the effects of temperature and concentration on ,a,20, was used to describe flow behavior of HPSP. The time-dependent model of Weltman was found to be most applicable (R2= 0.97-0.99) for HPSP. Storage (G') and loss (G") moduli increased with increase in TS, while complex viscosity (,*) decreased. Bedinger ABSTRACT: Devils Hole is a collapse depression connected to the regional carbonate aquifer of the Death Valley ground water flow system. Devils Hole pool is home to an endangered pupfish that was threatened when irrigation pumping in nearby Ash Meadows lowered the pool stage in the 1960s. Pumping at Ash Meadows ultimately ceased, and the stage recovered until 1988, when it began to decline, a trend that continued until at least 2004. Regional ground water pumping and changes in recharge are considered the principal potential stresses causing long term stage changes. A regression was found between pumpage and Devils Hole water levels. Though precipitation in distant mountain ranges is the source of recharge to the flow system, the stage of Devils Hole shows small change in stage from 1937 to 1963, a period during which ground water withdrawals were small and the major stress on stage would have been recharge. Multiple regression analyses, made by including the cumulative departure from normal precipitation with pumpage as independent variables, did not improve the regression. Drawdown at Devils Hole was calculated by the Theis Equation for nearby pumping centers to incorporate time delay and drawdown attenuation. The Theis drawdowns were used as surrogates for pumpage in multiple regression analyses. The model coefficient for the regression, R2= 0.982, indicated that changes in Devils Hole were largely due to effects of pumping at Ash Meadows, Amargosa Desert, and Army 1. [source] Reevaluation of the Dietary Protein Requirement of Japanese Flounder Paralichthys olivaceusJOURNAL OF THE WORLD AQUACULTURE SOCIETY, Issue 2 2003Kangwoong Kim An experiment was conducted to determine the dietary protein requirement by different analysis methods and to study the effects of dietary protein levels on growth performance and body composition in Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus fed white fish meal and casein-based diets for 8 wk. After a 1-wk conditioning period, one of six isocaloric diets containing 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60% crude protein (CP) was fed to fish at approximately 4,5% of wet body weight on a dry matter basis to triplicate groups of 15 fish averaging 13.3 ± 0.06 g (mean ± SD). After 8 wk of the feeding trial, weight gain (WG) and feed efficiency (FE) from fish fed 48% CP diet were similar to those from fish fed 42% and 54% CP diets, and were significantly higher than those from fish fed 30, 36 and 60% CP diets (P < 0.05). Fish fed 48 and 54% CP diets had a significant higher specific growth rate (SGR) than did fish fed 30 and 36% CP diets (P 0.05). Protein efficiency ratio (PER) was inversely related to the dietary protein level. No significant differences existed in hematocrit (PCV) and survival rate among the dietary treatments. Broken-line model analysis indicated that the optimum dietary protein level could be 44.0 ± 3.0% for maximum WG in Japanese flounder. Polynomial regression analysis of the dose-response showed that maximum WG occurred at 50.2% (R2= 0.94) based on WG, and the second-order polynomial regression analysis with 95% confidence limits revealed that the range of minimum protein requirement was between 38.9% and 40.3% based on WG. Therefore, these findings suggest that the optimum dietary protein requirement for maximum growth of Japanese flounder is greater than 40%, but less than 44% CP in the fish meal and casein-based diets containing 17.0 kJ/g of energy. [source] Density and Water Exchange-Dependent Growth and Survival of Litopenaeus setiferus PostlarvaeJOURNAL OF THE WORLD AQUACULTURE SOCIETY, Issue 2 2001Gabriela Palomino This present study was designed to investigate the effects of stocking density and water exchange on the growth rate, survival and performance index of L. setiferus postlarvae under controlled laboratory conditions. The experiment was done with postlarvae (PL10 to PL40) at densities of 50, 150, 250 and 350 shrimp/m2 and various different water exchanges rate per day (0, 6, 12 and 18%). The maximum growth rate was obtained for shrimp with 12% water exchange per day at all densities. A reduction of the maximum growth rate was observed in relation to density with the highest values in shrimp stocked in a density of 50 and 150 shrimp/m2 (mean value of 0.53 mg/d) and the lowest in shrimp stocked in a density of 350 shrimp/m2 (0.24 mg/d). The multiple regression equation obtained to relate performance index (growth rate* survival : PI), shrimp density (X1) and water exchange (X2) was: PI = 0.31 + (0.001) X1+ 0.039 X2+ 2.28 × 10,6 X12+ (,0.0017) X22+ (0.000026)X1X2,R2= 0.78; P > 0.03. According to this equation the optimum shrimp density-water exchange comhination was between 5 to 12% of water exchange at stocking density of between 50 and 150 shrimp/m2. Salinity, ammonia-N and nitrite-N increased according to the time spent in tanks without water exchange. With no (0%) water exchange, water quality parameters measured were outside the optimum for L. setiferus postlarvae. The use of optimum density and water exchange in a nursery system for L. setiferus with optimum variables established is proposed. Hypothesis: Doppler echocardiographic (DE) variables of left ventricular (LV) filling can predict a decline of LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) induced by acute preload reduction in dogs with compensated CHF. Animals: Five male hound dogs. Methods: Dogs previously instrumented with a transvenous cardiac pacemaker and a LV pressure gauge were paced at 160,180 bpm to induce mild CHF characterized by LVEDP > 20 mmHg. LVEDP and 9 DE variables of LV filling derived from diastolic time intervals, transmitral and pulmonary venous flow, and tissue Doppler imaging were measured simultaneously at baseline and 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes after furosemide (4 mg/kg, IV) or placebo (0.9% saline, IV). Repeated measures analysis of variance and correlation analysis were used to determine the association between the decline of LVEDP after furosemide and DE measures of LV filling pressure (LVFP). Results: Furosemide but not placebo decreased LVEDP (P < .001). The ratio of early transmitral flow velocity to LV isovolumic relaxation time (E : IVRT) predicted LVEDP best (R2= .50; P < .001). Correlations were also found between LVEDP and IVRT, E, ratio between E and late diastolic transmitral flow velocity (E : A), and early diastolic velocity of the mitral annulus (Ea). The ratio of E to Ea (E : Ea) was not useful in the prediction of LVEDP in this model. Conclusion and Clinical Importance: E : IVRT can be used to predict LVFP in dogs with mild left-sided CHF induced by rapid pacing. Naylor The ability of clinicians, ie, 10 veterinary students, 10 general practitioners, and 10 board certified internists, to describe and interpret common normal and abnormal heart sounds was assessed. Recordings of heart sounds from 7 horses with a variety of normal and abnormal rhythms, heart sounds, and murmurs were analyzed by digital sonography. The perception of the presence or absence of the heart sounds S1, S2, and S4 was similar for clinicians irrespective of their level of training and was in agreement with the sonographic interpretation on 89, 82, and 78% of occasions, respectively. However, practitioners were less likely to correctly describe the presence of S3. The heart rhythm was correctly described as being regular or irregular on 89% of occasions, and this outcome was not affected by level of training. Differentiation of the type of irregularity was less reliable. The perception of the intensity of a heart murmur was accurate and correlated with the grade assigned in the living horses, R2= .68, and with sonographic measurements of the murmur's intensity, R2= .69. Clinicians overestimated the duration of cardiac murmurs, particularly that of the loud systolic murmur. Only diplomates could reliably differentiate systolic from diastolic murmurs. The ability to diagnose the underlying cardiac problem was significantly affected by training; diplomates, practitioners, and undergraduates made the correct diagnosis on 53, 33, and 29% of occasions, respectively. The poor diagnostic ability of practitioners and the lack of improvement in diagnostic skill after the 2nd year of veterinary school emphasizes the need for better teaching of these skills. Digital sonograms that combine sound files with synchronous visual interpretations may be useful in this regard. [source] Two-Micron All-Sky Survey J01542930+0053266: a new eclipsing M dwarf binary systemMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 1 2008A. C. Becker ABSTRACT We report on Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) J01542930+0053266, a faint eclipsing system composed of two M dwarfs. The variability of this system was originally discovered during a pilot study of the 2MASS Calibration Point Source Working Data base. Additional photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey yields an eight-passband light curve from which we derive an orbital period of 2.639 0157 ± 0.000 0016 d. Spectroscopic followup confirms our photometric classification of the system, which is likely composed of M0 and M1 dwarfs. Radial velocity measurements allow us to derive the masses (M1= 0.66 ± 0.03 M,; M2= 0.62 ± 0.03 M,) and radii (R1= 0.64 ± 0.08 R,; R2= 0.61 ± 0.09 R,) of the components, which are consistent with empirical mass,radius relationships for low-mass stars in binary systems. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the light curves which allow us to uncover complicated degeneracies between the system parameters. Both stars show evidence of H, emission, something not common in early-type M dwarfs. This suggests that binarity may influence the magnetic activity properties of low-mass stars; activity in the binary may persist long after the dynamos in their isolated counterparts have decayed, yielding a new potential foreground of flaring activity for next generation variability surveys. P-wave dispersion is associated with inhomogeneous and discontinuous propagation of sinus impulses. The aim of this study was to investigate P-wave dispersion in students who apply for registration to School of Physical Education and Sports. Methods: Totally 984 students (810 boys [mean age: 19.8 ± 2.0 years] and 174 girls [mean age: 19.0 ± 1.8 years]) who applied for registration to School of Physical Education and Sports with a training history of some years were included in the study. P-wave duration was calculated in all 12 leads of the surface electrocardiography, which were simultaneously recorded. The difference between P maximum and P minimum durations was defined as P-wave dispersion. Results: Age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, P-wave maximal duration, and P-wave dispersion were increased in boys as compared with girls. Of age (P = 0.53), systolic blood pressure (P = 0.42), diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.50), pulse pressure (P = 0.73), gender, heart rate, and BMI tested with univariate linear regression analysis in all subjects; only gender (P < 0.001), BMI (P = 0.01), and heart rate (P = 0.02) were associated with P-wave dispersion (F = 5.16, P < 0.001, R2= 0.03). Conclusions: P-wave dispersion was increased in boys as compared with girls who exercise regularly. P-wave dispersion is affected by gender, BMI, and heart rate in healthy students. [source] Reverse Electrical Remodeling of the Atria Post Cardioversion in Patients Who Remain in Sinus Rhythm Assessed by Signal Averaging of the P-WavePACING AND CLINICAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 4 2007NAGIB CHALFOUN M.D. Objectives: This study was designed to determine whether the signal-averaged electrocardiogram of the P-wave (SAPW) is an independent predictor of recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) post cardioversion (CV), and to assess atrial remodeling using SAPW. Background: There are limited electrophysiologic data to predict the recurrence of AF post-CV. The electrical remodeling that occurs post-CV is poorly understood. Methods: Sixty-four patients with persistent AF undergoing CV were prospectively enrolled. SAPW parameters were measured the day of CV and repeated at 1 month. These SAPW parameters were compared to other baseline indices for the recurrence of AF. Results: Sixty patients (94%) had successful CV. At 1 month, 22 (37%) maintained sinus rhythm (SR). The SAPW total duration decreased significantly in those who remained in SR (159 ms ± 19 to 146 ms ± 17; P < 0.0001). Only the duration of AF (46 ± 50 days vs 147 ± 227 days, P = 0.03) and the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH, 12% vs 65%, P = 0.0006) were significantly associated with recurrence of AF. Atrial size strongly correlated with the SAPW duration in patients who remained in SR (R2= 0.67, P = 0.003) but not in those who returned to AF (R2= 0.11, P = 0.65). Conclusions: Atrial electrical reverse remodeling occurs in patients with AF who maintain SR post-CV. This remodeling is likely inversely related to the duration of AF and LVH. SAPW duration does not predict recurrence of AF post-CV. [source] |
