Quantitative Work (quantitative + work)
Selected AbstractsU.S. Policy toward Israel, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia: An Integrated Analysis, 1981,2004INTERNATIONAL STUDIES PERSPECTIVES, Issue 4 2008Rachel Bzostek This project is an integrated quantitative and qualitative examination of the influences on U.S. foreign policy toward a sample of Middle East states (Israel, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia) over the last quarter century. Examinations of general trends in the relationships between these dyads, regression analyses, and brief case studies look at a number of factors contributing to the construction of these relationships, what these relationships look like, and how they have changed over time. The findings show that both policy reciprocation and U.S. executive play key roles in determining U.S. foreign policy outcomes. Also discussed is the utility of a broad-based research approach including the integration of qualitative and quantitative work, the examination of individual-level, state-level, and structure-level influences in an inclusive framework, as well as the taking interactive trends over time and the various degrees of conflict within these trends ("high,""low," and "middle") into account. [source] Lecturer practitioners in UK nursing and midwifery: what is the evidence?JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 7 2004A systematic review of the research literature Background., Lecturer practitioner roles have been widely established in the UK, and are seen as having the ability to overcome the theory, practice gap in nursing, as well as offering other benefits including functioning as a link between education and practice. Aims and objectives., This article systematically reviews the research literature on UK lecturer practitioner roles in nursing and midwifery, in order to construct a picture of the themes that emerge from their national implementation. Conclusions., Only eight published research studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified in journals, and five more included from the ,grey literature', totalling 13 suitable research reports. Of these 13 papers, six involved nurses and midwives. Key themes from the literature are outlined and discussed. There is an overwhelming preference for qualitative methodologies, although there is a strong argument for quantitative work in mixed-methods studies. Relevance to clinical practice. Lecturer practitioner roles can make an important contribution to nursing and midwifery education, but this is problematic. It is essential that managers clarify the purpose, responsibilities, support and review of lecturer practitioner roles if they are to be successful. Abelman Abstract General or local variations of the refractive elements in the eye, called irregular astigmatism, may manifest as non-orthogonal meridians when each principal meridian on the front surface of a cornea is independently aligned with the focussed mires of a keratometer. These are examples of astigmatic systems that are thick. The representation of power along the principal meridians is not suitable for quantitative work. The purpose of this research note is to convert power along principal meridians that can be non-orthogonal, to the coordinates of the power matrix that are suitable for quantitative analysis. [source] Evolution of humeral microanatomy and lifestyle in amniotes, and some comments on palaeobiological inferencesBIOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 2 2010AURORE CANOVILLE A study on the most exhaustive taxonomic sample of amniotes (75 extant and nine extinct taxa) of any quantitative work on this topic published so far demonstrates a strong relationship between lifestyle (aquatic, amphibious or terrestrial) and humeral microanatomy. We suggest that corrections for multiple testing be used to check for statistical artefacts in the context of a phylogenetic independent contrast analysis, and we use the false discovery rate procedure for this. Linear discriminant models segregate the various lifestyles with excellent success rate of up to 98.5%. Lifestyle was thus inferred for six extinct taxa of uncertain habitat. The results obtained suggest that Captorhinus, Claudiosaurus, and Placodus were amphibious, whereas Neusticosaurus and Mesosaurus were aquatic. Lystrosaurus may have been more aquatic than previously suggested, although the results of our inference models have to be integrated with other sources of data, which suggest that it may have been amphibious, rather than aquatic (as a literal interpretation of the models would suggest). Finally, we propose an alternative method of palaeobiological inference for hypothetical ancestors. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100, 384,406.
