Selected AbstractsStructure,Property Relation of SrTiO3/LaAlO3 InterfacesADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 17 2009Mark Huijben Abstract A large variety of transport properties have been observed at the interface between the insulating oxides SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 such as insulation, 2D interface metallicity, 3D bulk metallicity, magnetic scattering, and superconductivity. The relation between the structure and the properties of the SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface can be explained in a meaningful way by taking into account the relative contribution of three structural aspects: oxygen vacancies, structural deformations (including cation disorder), and electronic interface reconstruction. The emerging phase diagram is much richer than for related bulk oxides due to the occurrence of interface electronic reconstruction. The observation of this interface phenomenon is a display of recent advances in thin film deposition and characterization techniques, and provides an extension to the range of exceptional electronic properties of complex oxides. [source] Synthesis and Structure,Property Relations of a Series of Photochromic Molecular Glasses for Controlled and Efficient Formation of Surface Relief NanostructuresADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 16 2009Roland Walker Abstract This paper reports on the synthesis and properties of a new series of photochromic molecular glasses and their structure,property relations with respect to a controlled and efficient formation of surface relief nanostructures. The aim of the paper is to establish a correlation between molecular structure, optical susceptibility, and the achievable surface relief heights. The molecular glasses consist of a triphenylamine core and three azobenzene side groups attached via an ester linkage. Structural variations are performed with respect to the substitution at the azobenzene moiety in order to promote a formation of a stable amorphous phase and to tune absorption properties and molecular dynamics. Surface relief gratings (SRGs) and complex surface patterns can easily be inscribed via holographic techniques. The modulation heights are determined with an equation adapted from the theory for thin gratings, and the values are confirmed with AFM measurements. Temperature-dependent holographic measurements allow for monitoring of SRG build-up and decay and the stability at elevated temperatures, as well as determination of the glass transition temperature. SRG modulation heights of above 600,nm are achieved. These are the highest values reported for molecular glasses to date. The surface patterns of the molecular glasses are stable enough to be copied in a replica molding process. It is demonstrated that the replica can be used to transfer the surface pattern onto a common thermoplastic polymer. Drawing on two case studies, this article explores utopian practices that challenge dominant property narratives. These practices range from the mundane to the profound and occur inside the domestic, economic, interpersonal and ideological structures of the cases in question. These cases are Riverside and Centrepoint Communities: two intentional communities, comprised of people who have chosen to live and work together for a common purpose, are critical of current socioeconomic (and ideological, spiritual and interpersonal) norms and who intend to create a better life for their members. [source] Structure,properties relations of the drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) filament sewing threadJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 5 2008Andreja Rudolf Abstract This article presents research into draw ratio influence on the structure,properties relationship of drawn PET filament threads. Structural modification influence due to the drawing conditions, i.e., the birefringence and filament crystallinity, on the mechanical properties was investigated, as well as the shrinkage and dynamic mechanical properties of the drawn threads. Increasing draw ratio causes a linear increase in the birefringence, degree of crystallinity, filament shrinkage, and a decrease in the loss modulus. In addition, loss tangent and glass transition temperature, determined at the loss modulus peak, were increased by drawing. The observed structural changes influence the thread's mechanical properties, i.e., the breaking tenacity, elasticity modulus, and tension at the yield point increase, while breaking extension decreases by a higher draw ratio. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cortés This paper investigates the interfacial, tensile, and fatigue properties of a titanium alloy fiber,metal laminate (Ti-FML) based on woven glass-fiber-reinforced polyetherimide (GF/PEI). Initial tests, using the single cantilever beam (SCB) geometry have shown that it is not necessary to surface treat the titanium alloy in order to achieve a high value of metal,composite interfacial fracture toughness. Tensile tests have shown that the mechanical properties of the FML lie between those offered by its constituent materials. Tension,tension fatigue tests have shown that the fatigue lives of these laminates are superior to those offered by the plain titanium alloy. The mechanical properties of this glass fiber/PEI FML have also been compared with those offered by an FML based on a unidirectional carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composite. Here, it has been shown that although the fatigue properties of this woven GF/PEI composite are inferior to those of the CF/PEEK FML, they do offer a higher temperature capability due to the higher glass transition temperature of the PEI matrix. [source] The Question of Market DependenceJOURNAL OF AGRARIAN CHANGE, Issue 1 2002Ellen Meiksins Wood Capitalism is a system of social-property relations in which survival and social reproduction are dependent on the market; a system that is, therefore, driven by the imperatives of competition and a relentless drive to improve the forces of production. This article explores the nature of that market dependence and the specific historical conditions in which it emerged. In debate with Robert Brenner's recent article in this journal (vol.1, no.2) about the early development of capitalism in the Low Countries, it is suggested that, while the Dutch Republic was a highly developed commercial society, it seems to have lacked the specific conditions that made market dependence a basic property relation, as it was in early modern English agrarian capitalism. The differences between Dutch and English patterns of economic development reflect some fundamental differences between commercial and capitalist societies. Due to the developments of recent years, materials of this type can conveniently be grown, mainly by pulsed laser deposition, in the form of epitaxial films, multilayers, superlattices, and well-ordered arrays of nanoislands. These structures allow for investigations of preparation,microstructure,property relations. A wide variation of the properties is possible, determined by strain, composition, defect contents, dimensional effects, and crystallographic orientation. An overview of our corresponding work of recent years is given, particularly focusing on epitaxial films, superlattices and nanoisland arrays of (anti)ferroelectric and multiferroic functional perovskites. [source] Modest Expectations: Gender and Property Rights in Urban MexicoLAW & SOCIETY REVIEW, Issue 1 2010Ann VarleyArticle first published online: 31 MAR 2010 This article examines gender and property in Guadalajara, Mexico, in the light of debates that oppose formal title to the social embeddedness of rights in customary law and assert that titling is bad for women. The article focuses on urban homes, private property, and civil law but finds that qualities regarded as characterizing customary property relations also shape popular understandings of property in urban Mexico. Discussion groups and social surveys in four low-income neighborhoods addressed two aspects of family law and property: whose name should appear on titles, and who should inherit the home. The results show that women, as wives, sisters, and daughters, have a secondary relationship to property. They also suggest that the opposition of individual title to socially embedded rights is a false dichotomy and that generalizing arguments about formalization and especially the negative gender implications of titling risks replicating the universalizing tendencies of Western property models. [source] Improving Gene Delivery Efficiency of Bioreducible Poly(amidoamine)s via Grafting with Dendritic Poly(amidoamine)sMACROMOLECULAR BIOSCIENCE, Issue 4 2010Ya-Nan Xue Abstract Dendritic poly(amidoamine)s (PAMAM)s were introduced into the side chains of disulfide-containing poly(amidoamine)s via repetitive Michael addition and amidation. The bioreducible poly(amidoamine)s grafted with dendritic polyamidoamines showed high buffer capacity, low cytotoxicity and strong DNA binding ability at low N/P ratio. They were able to condense DNA into small sized polycation/DNA complexes, which degraded and released the incorporated DNA under reductive conditions. In comparison to the original disulfide-containing poly(amidoamine) with aminoethyl side chain, the grafting of the bioreducible poly(amidoamine) with dendrimer greatly improved the transfection efficiencies of 293T and HeLa cells with foreign DNA at various N/P ratios. The structure,gene delivery property relations of dendrimer-grafted polycations will provide valuable insight into the design of highly efficient and less toxic polycationic gene carriers. At its heart was a contest over emerging class and gender subjectivities that were repeatedly defined through the figure of the voice and related practices of address, hailing, and recognition. The competing formations of voice I discuss here entail shifting notions of intimacy. Bassett Abstract The study of polymer morphology continues to be the principal means of acquiring knowledge and understanding of macromolecular self-organization. Longstanding problems of the nature of melt-crystallized lamellae and spherulitic growth have been resolved, bringing understanding of how characteristic properties such as a broad melting range and spatially-varying mechanical response are inherent in spherulitic morphologies. This reflects the distinctive features of the crystallization of long molecules, i.e. that they impede each other and, for faster growth, form rough basal surfaces. Knowledge of morphology is an essential accompaniment to the informed development of advanced polymeric materials and a full understanding of their structure/property relations. [source] |
