Stochastic Study of Solute Transport in a Nonstationary Medium

A Lagrangian stochastic approach is applied to develop a method of moment for solute transport in a physically and chemically nonstationary medium. Stochastic governing equations for mean solute flux and solute covariance are analytically obtained in the first-order accuracy of log conductivity and/or chemical sorption variances and solved numerically using the finite-difference method. The developed method, the numerical method of moments (NMM), is used to predict radionuclide solute transport processes in the saturated zone below the Yucca Mountain project area. The mean, variance, and upper bound of the radionuclide mass flux through a control plane 5 km downstream of the footprint of the repository are calculated. According to their chemical sorption capacities, the various radionuclear chemicals are grouped as nonreactive, weakly sorbing, and strongly sorbing chemicals. The NMM method is used to study their transport processes and influence factors. To verify the method of moments, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted for nonreactive chemical transport. Results indicate the results from the two methods are consistent, but the NMM method is computationally more efficient than the Monte Carlo method. This study adds to the ongoing debate in the literature on the effect of heterogeneity on solute transport prediction, especially on prediction uncertainty, by showing that the standard derivation of solute flux is larger than the mean solute flux even when the hydraulic conductivity within each geological layer is mild. This study provides a method that may become an efficient calculation tool for many environmental projects. [source]


The effect of introducing pipelines into irrigation water distribution systems on the farm economy: a case study in the Southern Governorates Rural Development Project, Republic of Yemen,

le Yémen; eau souterraine; irrigation; tuyaux Abstract The Southern Governorates Rural Development Project (SGRDP) is a comprehensive participatory rural development project covering three of the five southern Governorates of the Republic of Yemen, namely Hadramaut, Abyan and Lahij. Its objective is to alleviate poverty in rural areas of these three Governorates. A major component of the project is to develop virgin lands for agriculture and allocate each 5 feddan (FD) plot to those farmers who do not own land (1 FD=4200 m2). As the annual rainfall in the project area is less than 100 mm and since landlords and other farmers already own lands suitable for agriculture in the major wadis, the only source of irrigation water in the newly developed land is the groundwater (GW). The SGRDP is aware of the scarcity of water resources in the country, particularly in the project area; it therefore makes every possible effort to optimize the use of GW for irrigation by practical means. One way of reducing GW used for irrigation is by replacing major canals in the farms by buried pipelines. This method has been tried in small-scale individual farms outside the project area and it proved that farmers could adapt to the system without difficulty. Sprinkler and drip irrigation systems have been tried in many previous agricultural development projects in the country but with no apparent success, as far as the farmers' adoption of the method is concerned. Thus, the project, as the first stage to reduce the use of GW for irrigation in the newly developed areas, planned to eliminate, initially, the conveyance losses by replacing the open canals by buried PVC pipes. In this paper, it is attempted to show that the use of buried pipes in small scale irrigation schemes is financially feasible, even if the indirect and non-tangible environmental benefits are not considered. This paper deals only with special GW schemes recommended for the project area; however, the outcome could be generalized and applied elsewhere in the country. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Le Projet de Développement Rural des Gouvernorats du Sud (SGRDP) est un ensemble de projet de développement rural participatif de trois des cinq Gouvernorats de la République de Yémen à savoir Hadramaut, Abyan et Lahij. Son objectif est d'atténuer la pauvreté dans les régions rurales de ces Gouvernorats. L'une des principales activités de ce projet concerne le développement des terres incultes pour l'agriculture. Ce développement passe par l'allocation de parcelles de 5 FD à chaque agriculteur sans terre. Comme la pluviosité annuelle dans cette région est inférieure à 100 mm et que les propriétaires et les autres fermiers disposent déjà des terres aptes à l'agriculture dans les WADIS importants, l'eau souterraine est la seule source d'eau pour l'irrigation des terres nouvellement développées. Compte tenu de la rareté des ressources en eau, particulièrement dans la région du projet, le SGRDP s'efforce d'optimiser l'utilisation de l'eau souterraine (ES) pour l'irrigation en adoptant des moyens pratiques. L'un des moyens de réduire l'ES utilisée en irrigation consiste à remplacer les principaux canaux des fleuves par des tuyaux enterrés. Cette méthode a été utilisée à titre d'essai dans des exploitations individuelles de petite taille en dehors de la région du projet, et il s'est avéré que les agriculteurs peuvent s'adapter à ce système sans difficultés. Les systèmes d'irrigation par aspersion et goutte à goutte ont été essayés dans de nombreux anciens projets de développement agricoles du pays, mais sans succès apparent quant à l'adoption de cette méthode par les fermiers. Ainsi, le projet, en tant que première stade de réduction de l'ES pour l'irrigation dans les régions nouvellement développées, a proposé d'éliminer au début les pertes par transport en remplaçant les canaux ouverts par des tuyaux PVC enterrés. Ce rapport essaie de montrer que l'utilisation des tuyaux enterrés dans les projets d'irrigation de petite taille, est faisable du point de vue économique même en faisant abstraction des avantages indirects et non tangibles provenant de l'environnement. Le rapport traite seulement des projets spéciaux de l'ES recommandés pour la région du projet. Cependant, les résultats peuvent être généralisés et appliqués aux autres régions du pays. Characterizing a Brownfields recreational reuse scenario using the Triad Approach,Assunpink Creek Greenways project

Since the early 1990s the U.S. government has been developing and implementing public policies that advance the redevelopment of brownfields, and the recent passage of the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act (SBLRBRA) will significantly advance efforts to integrate environmental contamination mitigation and redevelopment. Experience has demonstrated that successful redevelopment requires the collection, analysis, and interpretation of environmental data in a timely and cost-effective manner in order to allow developers and lenders to efficiently use cleanup resources, develop response strategies that integrate cleanup with redevelopment, and support meaningful outreach to involved stakeholders. Recent advances in the science and technology of site characterization hold the promise of improved site characterization outcomes while saving time and money. One such advancement, the Triad Approach, combines systematic up-front planning with the use of a dynamic field investigation process and the generation of real time data to allow in-field decision making on sample location selection. This article describes an application of the Triad Approach to redevelopment of an urban greenway in Trenton, New Jersey. The Triad Approach, initiated through a partnership between the City of Trenton, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, demonstrated that this approach could accelerate the characterization of the 60-acre, 11-parcel project area. Environmental issues that were solved using the Triad Approach included the delineation of the extent of historic fill, determination of no further action for several areas of concern, detailed investigation of specific impacted areas and the acquisition of sufficient data to allow the city to make important decisions regarding remediation costs and property acquisition. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environmental cleanup of the nation's former nuclear weapons sites: Unprecedented public-private challenges at the largest facilities

In 1994, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiated a contract reform program intended to strengthen oversight capabilities and encourage the creation of contract and incentive structures, which would effectively facilitate the treatment of onsite contamination and waste. The remedia-tion and disposal of these legacy wastes is the core of the Department's environmental manage-ment mission (Government Accountability Office [GAO], 2003). Despite a concerted effort toward achieving the goals of the reform, progress has been slow. Many projects continue to necessitate cost and time extensions above those originally agreed upon. Although the Department insti-tuted an accelerated cleanup program in 2002, promising to shave some $50 billion and 35 years from its earlier cost and schedule projections, there have been delays in critical project areas that call into question the attainability of the proposed reductions (GAO, 2005). Numerous explana-tions have been offered as to why achieving these goals has proven so difficult, many of which have concluded that flawed contracting practices are to blame. This article concludes that the root of the problem is much deeper and that the organizational criticisms aimed at DOE are as much a legacy as the waste itself. Although the focus of this article is on large former nuclear weapons sites, these types of contracting and organizational issues are often found at other gov-ernment and private complex hazardous waste sites. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Catalysts for water,gas shift processing of coal-derived syngases,

Abstract Although the gasification of coal is an efficient means of producing syngas, the carbon content of coal is such that gasification produces significantly higher ratios of carbon oxides to hydrogen than those obtained by the steam reforming of natural gas. The CO:H2 ratio can be adjusted, and more hydrogen produced, by the subsequent application of the water,gas shift (WGS) reaction. This article presents a review of technologies associated with the catalytic WGS reaction in a fixed-bed reactor that might be incorporated into a coal gasification-based system for H2 production with CO2 capture. The main output from this review is the identification of key project areas requiring further research. The performance of existing, commercially available catalysts,designed for use in natural gas reforming processes,with coal-derived syngases is an important aspect of developing technologies for coal-based H2 production. This article presents an experimental assessment of the performance of selected commercially available WGS catalysts, two high-temperature catalysts (HT01 and HT02) and a sour shift catalyst (SS01), with such syngases. For the three commercial catalysts investigated in this study, CO reaction order is found to be in a range of 0.75,1. The effect of changes in H2O concentration over HT01 is insignificant, whereas H2O reaction orders determined using HT02 and SS01 are found to be significantly positive even at high H2O:C ratios. The CO conversion rate is significantly reduced by increasing CO2 concentration, whereas increasing H2 concentration also causes a slight reduction in CO conversion rate for the three commercial catalysts investigated.
