A study of creative tension of engineering students in Korea

The aim of this research was to study the nature of creative tension of engineering students in South Korea. The creative tension was analyzed according to relevant competences in project managers' work role. Most of the subjects who participated in this study were part-time students who worked as managers in manufacturing and industrial companies. The application used for collecting and analyzing data was the project managers' work-role,based competence application, Cycloid. Data were collected on the Internet by self-evaluation. The constructed competence model of the Cycloid application was added into the Evolute self-evaluation system utilizing fuzzy logic. The application was able to identify students' current state and personal aims and the creative tension essential for their personal development. The anatomy of interprofessional leadership: An investigation of leadership behaviors in team-based health care

Increasing specialization among health care professions has heightened the need for proficient interprofessional teamwork. Within the team context for practice, leadership becomes a competency expected of all practitioners who must recognize the necessity of situational leadership dependent on patient needs and the professional competencies to meet those needs. Although this need for leadership within interprofessional practice is recognized, the behavioral components of that leadership competency have not been delineated. In this article, the authors report on a study to identify the behavioral components of interprofessional practice and highlight the indicators of leadership competency in interprofessional patient-centered care. This qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with 24 participants from nine professions engaged in collaborative team care of clients or patients in a variety of community and acute-based health care facilities. Interprofessional competencies were explored using grounded theory, with coding of participants' responses. In this article, the authors have highlighted leadership in interprofessional practice, and discussed the behavioral indicators of leadership that could be used in preparation of students, faculty, and practitioners for interprofessional practice, as well as in evaluation of that practice for purposes of professional growth. A national medical education needs' assessment of interns and the development of an intern education and training programme

A needs' assessment of interns was undertaken using a self-completion questionnaire and a semistructured interview. The questionnaire explored to what degree graduates had been helped to acquire a range of competencies and professional characteristics. In the interviews graduates discussed their self-perceived learning needs, their educational and training experiences and made suggestions. A 25% random sample of 1996 graduate doctors was selected from the five medical schools in Ireland (n=95). The overall response rate was 88% (n=84). The software package SPSS was utilized to carry out descriptive statistics on the questionnaire data while the interview data were analysed qualitatively. Of the responders, 91% reported that they were not prepared for all the skills needed as an intern. History taking and clinical examination were considered well covered at the undergraduate level but little training was received in a range of professional competencies and personal characteristics. Formal education and training during the intern year was found to be poor. However, some skills and characteristics improved during the year as a result of work experience. In the interviews the graduates explored educational issues. They considered an improved clinical experience throughout the undergraduate years to be at the heart of curriculum development but stressed that, in order to succeed, it would have to be accompanied by leadership within the healthcare system and efforts to improve the learning environment. What Makes a Good CAMHS Primary Mental Health Worker?

Background:, The role of primary mental health worker (PMHW) in CAMHS was established in 1995 although comparatively little research has explored the attributes required to successfully undertake this role. Method:, Qualitative interviews with PMHWs and staff working in primary care were conducted and thematic analysis was performed. Results:, In addition to clinical skills and mental health knowledge all respondents consistently emphasised the importance of inter-personal attributes such as general accessibility, flexibility, and self-motivation. Conclusions:, Both professional competencies and inter-personal skills are perceived as important characteristics for PMHWs. It therefore seems appropriate for these to be made more explicit in competency frameworks. [source]


Perspectives on professional values among nurses in Taiwan

Aim., The purpose of this study was to identify the most important contemporary professional nursing values for nursing clinicians and educators in Taiwan. Background., Nursing values are constructed by members of political and social systems, including professional nursing organisations and educational institutions. Nurses' personal value systems shape the development of these professional values. An understanding of nurses' perceptions of professional values will enable the profession to examine consistencies with those reflected in existing and emerging educational and practice environments. Design., A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using the focus-group discussion method. Methods., A purposive sample of 300 registered nurses in Taiwan, consisting of 270 nursing clinicians and 30 faculty members, participated in 22 focus-group interviews. Data were analysed using a systematic process of content analysis. Results., Six prominent values related to professional nursing were identified: (a) caring for clients with a humanistic spirit; (b) providing professionally competent and holistic care; (c) fostering growth and discovering the meaning of life; (d) experiencing the ,give-and-take' of caring for others; (e) receiving fair compensation; and (f) raising the public's awareness of health promotion. Four background contexts framed the way participants viewed the appropriation of these values: (a) appraising nursing values through multiple perspectives; (b) acquiring nursing values through self-realisation; (c) recognising nursing values through professional competency and humanistic concerns and (d) fulfilling nursing values through coexisting self-actualisation. A conceptual framework was developed to represent this phenomenon. Conclusion., The most important professional nursing values according to the perspectives of nurses in Taiwan were identified. These values reflect benefits to society, to nurses themselves and to the interdisciplinary team. Relevance to clinical practice., Nurses' awareness of their own values and of how these values influence their behaviour is an essential component of humanistic nursing care. Nursing educators need to develop better strategies for reflection and integration of both personal and professional philosophies and values. [source]
