Personality and Close Relationships: Embedding People in Important Social Contexts

ABSTRACT This special issue of the Journal of Personality is predicated on the assumption that close relationships provide the central stage for the drama of human experience. This all-important context both shapes and conditions the expression of personality, and thus must play an integral role in any truly adequate account of human behavior. The importance of this agenda is perhaps overshadowed only by its difficulty. Contributions to the present issue, therefore, take stock of past research, highlight current state-of-the-art research, and offer a vision of the next generation of research on personality and close relationships. The conceptual and methodological approaches highlighted in this issue remain faithful to the dynamic, interdependent, and multilayered nature of the processes linking personality and close relationships. Allen Forte in Music Analysis

ABSTRACT This article explores the engagement of an American music theorist with a British journal. Music Analysis excludes the word ,theory' from its title to avoid confusion with American journals. But many American theorists have welcomed the alternative it represents, and of these Allen Forte is pre-eminent. His contributions began with Vol. 2/iii (October 1983) and have continued through to the present issue. As this survey suggests, those contributions which are transcripts of spoken presentations emphasise that analysis is not just abstraction but ,a human thing'. Yet, whether Forte is writing primarily about a topic such as pitch-class set theory or about admired composers , Musorgsky, Debussy, Messiaen , he offers a distinctive blend of general and particular, placing compositional specifics within wider perspectives which invariably stimulate the reader not just to think but to listen, and re-listen. Special issue: Physics of Organic Semiconductors

This special issue of physica status solidi (a) gives an overview of our present-day knowledge of the physics behind organic semiconductor devices, ranging from the growth of organic layers and crystals, their electronic properties at interfaces, their photophysics and electrical transport properties to the application in organic field-effect transistors, photovoltaic cells and organic light-emit-ting diodes. Guest Editor of the present issue is Wolfgang Brütting, professor at the University of Augsburg, where he leads a research group working on organic semiconductors, their physical and materials properties, and the understanding of the basic processes in these materials and devices. The cover picture is an angular plot of the anisotropy of the charge carrier mobility , in the a,b plane of a rubrene single crystal, probed on an elastomeric rubber stamp field-effect transistor device. The black and red squares correspond to the values of , extracted from the linear and saturation regimes of the transistor operation, respectively. Nitrides as spintronic materials

The Guest Editors of the Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Nitride Semiconductors (ICNS-5), Hiroshi Amano and Takashi Udagawa, have nominated the invited presentation by Tomasz Dietl [1] as Editor's Choice of the present issue of physica status solidi (b). This paper is a progress report on spintronics-related issues in Mn-based III-nitrides as potential diluted magnetic semiconductors. The cover picture shows the computed values of the Curie temperature for various p-type III,V compounds containing 5% of Mn in the S = 5/2 high spin state and 3.5 × 1020 holes per cm3, predicting that TC should exceed room temperature in the Mn-based nitrides. Thomas Dietl is head of the Low-Temperature Physics Group and professor at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is one of the most experienced researchers in the area of ferromagnetic semiconductors, spin-related phenomena and other current topics of semiconductor physics with many publications and invited talks at conferences and seminars world-wide. Stripe fractionalization: the quantum spin nematic and the Abrikosov lattice

The cover picture of physica status solidi (b), taken from the Editor's Choice of this issue, shows a scheme of construction of the spin nematic ordered state and the topological interaction between spatially disconnected gauge defects. The gauge symmetry is broken by applying an external field B. The theory described in the paper [1] offers a potential explanation for recent observations of magnetic field induced antiferromagnetism in La1.9Sr0.1CuO4. The first author, Jan Zaanen, is Professor of Physics at the Instituut-Lorentz in Leiden where he works on quantum field theory in condensed matter physics, concentrating on problems in high- TC superconductivity, quantum magnetism, quantum liquid crystals, doped Mott insulators, and strongly correlated electron systems. This paper is an invited presentation from the European Conference Physics of Magnetism (PM'02), held in Pozna,, Poland, 1,5 July 2002. Characteristics of Australia's rangelands and key design issues for monitoring biodiversity

Abstract We explored the key issues that are most likely to influence any set of guiding principles for developing biodiversity monitoring programmes in Australia's rangelands. We defined the Australian rangelands and came up with an overview of their climate extremes, land-use pressures and biodiversity loss, and then focussed on issues underpinning the design phase of any monitoring programme. Using Noss's 1990 framework of compositional, structural and functional attributes of biodiversity and its new revisions by others, we showed how the elusive, abstract concept of biodiversity can be used to identify many measurable attributes that can form a minimum and necessary set of indicators for any biodiversity monitoring task. We then described the steps in the monitoring process, with a particular focus on the reasons for monitoring biodiversity as they strongly influence the selection of indicators. We concluded by compiling a table of key issues as background information for developing guiding principles (Table 4). The list is by no means an exhaustive list for the design phase but it does indicate that considerable attention needs to be given to this phase when developing monitoring programmes. We have intentionally not addressed the equally important issues associated with the planning and delivery phases of developing a monitoring programme, as Wallace et al. and Watson and Novelly cover these in their papers in the present issue of Austral Ecology. Oleamide: a member of the endocannabinoid family?

The fatty acid amide class of compounds, which include the endocannabinoid anandamide and the sleep-inducing compound oleamide, have been shown in vitro to have a multiplicity of actions upon different neurochemical systems. In the present issue of this journal, Leggett et al present data indicating that oleamide functionally activates CB1 cannabinoid receptors in vitro.
