Selected AbstractsGUIDELINES FOR IMPLEMENTING PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE*PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT, Issue 2 2002KATHLEEN E. MCKONE Recent advances in predictive maintenance technologies have led many manufacturers to abandon traditional periodic maintenance policies and replace them with predictive maintenance policies. The models in this paper explicitly evaluate the decision to utilize both predictive and periodic maintenance when the objective is to minimize expected maintenance costs per unit time. Renewal theory is used to obtain optimal policies as unique solutions of integral equations that depend on the failure distribution and prediction capabilities. Based on this research, we recommend that practitioners do not abandon the traditional maintenance methods but follow our guidelines for utilizing periodic maintenance in conjunction with the new technologies. [source] Direct estimation of the seismic demand and capacity of oscillators with multi-linear static pushovers through IDA,EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 9 2006Dimitrios Vamvatsikos Abstract SPO2IDA is introduced, a software tool that is capable of recreating the seismic behaviour of oscillators with complex quadrilinear backbones. It provides a direct connection between the static pushover (SPO) curve and the results of incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), a computer-intensive procedure that offers thorough demand and capacity prediction capability by using a series of nonlinear dynamic analyses under a suitably scaled suite of ground motion records. To achieve this, the seismic behaviour of numerous single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems is investigated through IDA. The oscillators have a wide range of periods and feature pinching hysteresis with backbones ranging from simple bilinear to complex quadrilinear with an elastic, a hardening and a negative-stiffness segment plus a final residual plateau that terminates with a drop to zero strength. An efficient method is introduced to treat the backbone shape by summarizing the analysis results into the 16, 50 and 84% fractile IDA curves, reducing them to a few shape parameters and finding simpler backbones that reproduce the IDA curves of complex ones. Thus, vast economies are realized while important intuition is gained on the role of the backbone shape to the seismic performance. The final product is SPO2IDA, an accurate, spreadsheet-level tool for performance-based earthquake engineering that can rapidly estimate demands and limit-state capacities, strength reduction R -factors and inelastic displacement ratios for any SDOF system with such a quadrilinear SPO curve. [source] Comparison of different algorithms to calculate electrophoretic mobility of analytes as a function of binary solvent compositionELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 10 2003Abolghasem Jouyban Abstract Ten different mathematical models representing the electrophoretic mobility of analytes in capillary electrophoresis in mixed solvents of different composition have been compared using 32 experimental data sets. The solvents are binary mixtures of water-methanol, water-ethanol and methanol-ethanol, respectively. Mean percentage deviation (MPD), overall MPD (OMPD) and individual percentage deviation (IPD) have been considered as comparison criteria. The results showed that a reorganized solution model, namely the combined nearly ideal binary solvent/Redlich-Kister equation, is the most accurate model among other similar models concerning both correlation ability and prediction capability. [source] On a test bench for studying lubrication in a spherical bearing: simulations and experimental validationLUBRICATION SCIENCE, Issue 4 2006N.P. Belfiore In this paper a test bench dedicated to the analysis of a lubricated spherical pair is presented. The experimental set-up has been used to validate a numerical code that has been developed by the authors in order to simulate a complex lubricated spherical pair that affects the reliability of a novel continuous variable transmission (CVT). The test bench is modular and can be adapted to other lubricated pairs, either cylindrical or spherical. The stand is equipped with an I/O control card and allows the on-line acquisition of some important parameters. As for the numerical code, the finite-difference method has been used to solve the indirect problem in the lubricated spherical pad, under the condition of hydrodynamic regime, with externally pressurized inlets. Two simulators are needed since the physical properties of the test bench and the real system are different. The one that simulates the behavior of the spherical pair in the test stand has been used to ascertain the numeric approach prediction capability. Indeed, the experimental tests gave results which are in very good correspondence with the numerical predictions. Hence, the second simulator, which has been tailored on the particular spherical pair the CVT is equipped with, gained reliability in predicting the behavior of the real system under different load and speed conditions. These predictions have been useful in achieving new insights into the novel CVT, which, under this new light, has been criticized by making the point that its range of application in automotive is, at the actual state of the art, rather limited, in spite of a high intrinsic complexity. Kemps Abstract During this work, it was investigated whether spectral measurements can be used to monitor embryonic growth. An experiment was conducted in which both the transmission spectra and embryonic weight were determined on 240 eggs (Cobb, 37 weeks) between Day 5 and Day 10 of incubation. The spectral data were linked to embryonic weight by means of a partial least squares analysis. Different preprocessing procedures were compared during this work, that is, smoothing, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), and first- and second-order derivative. Compared to the remainder of the preprocessing procedures, MSC leads to a considerable improvement of the prediction capability of the embryonic weight. The ratio of performance to deviation obtained for the MSC spectra equaled 4.5 indicating that a very accurate prediction of embryonic weight is feasible based on the VIS/NIR transmission measurements. Important regions for the prediction are situated around 685,740 nm. It is suggested that the spectral changes in these spectral regions result from the displacement of carotenoids from the yolk into the blood circuitry. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol. Prog., 2010 [source] Lipids, lipid modifying agents and cardiovascular risk: a review of the evidenceCLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 6 2009David Preiss Summary It is well-established that serum total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, low HDL-cholesterol and calculated indices such as total cholesterol : HDL-cholesterol ratio or less commonly used indices such as non-HDL cholesterol are strongly predictive of cardiovascular events. Serum triglycerides, by contrast, are only modestly associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) in multivariate analysis and incorporation of triglycerides into prediction algorithms is therefore unlikely to improve their prediction capability. Meta-analysis of studies including > 90 000 subjects has provided robust evidence that statins reduce important clinical end-points. These included a 12% fall in all-cause mortality, 19% fall in CHD mortality and 23% fall in CHD mortality or myocardial infarction. Furthermore there are high quality data showing additional benefit of intensive statin therapy over standard statin therapy for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. However, meta-analysis of 10 fibrate trials has shown inconsistent evidence of vascular benefit and non-cardiovascular mortality has been slightly but consistently elevated in most fibrate trials and in meta-analysis. The general use of fibrates for cardiovascular risk reduction can therefore not be supported at present. Other second line agents such as bile acid sequestrants, nicotinic acid and omega-3 fatty acid supplements have been evaluated in a few randomized controlled studies in which cardiovascular benefit has been found but clearly further data are required to properly establish their use in clinical practice. Ongoing studies such as ACCORD, IMPROVE-IT, ASCEND, ORIGIN and HPS2-THRIVE should assist in answering outstanding questions over the next 5 years. [source] |
