All larval instars of Epargyreus clarus, the silver-spotted skipper, construct and inhabit leaf shelters that are presumed to protect them from predator attack. 2. Shelters effectively protected the larvae against foraging Crematogaster opuntiae ants and naive Polistes spp. wasps in laboratory tests, but did not protect them from predators, largely vespid wasps, present in the field. 3. A range of factors, including type of predator, learning ability, and experience level, may determine the effectiveness of leaf shelters as protection from predators. Field observations have indicated that infection of locusts and grasshoppers by the fungal entomopathogen Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum may result in a substantial increase in the host's susceptibility to predation, before death is caused directly by the disease. 2. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine how the behaviour of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria Forskĺl changes following infection by M. anisopliae var. acridum to explore some potential mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. 3. In the first experiment, which involved monitoring general locust activity in small cages throughout the disease incubation period, infected locusts were observed to increase locomotion and bodily movement from 3 days after infection until death (average survival time of 11 days). There was some evidence of reduced feeding and mating behaviour following infection. 4. In a second experiment, locusts were exposed individually to a simulated predator attack and the initiation and strength of any escape responses were measured. Infected locusts were observed to have a reduced escape capability (both the propensity to escape and the strength of the response). In contrast to the relatively early changes in general activity observed in the first experiment, this was only apparent at the late stages of infection shortly before death. 5. Both an increase in movement and general apparency early in the infection process, and reduced escape capability late on, suggest mechanisms whereby the susceptibility of locusts and grasshoppers to predation might be enhanced following infection with M. anisopliae var. acridum. [source] Sex-Specific Aggression and Antipredator Behaviour in Young Brown TroutETHOLOGY, Issue 7 2001Jörgen I. Johnsson Sex differences in adult behaviour are often interpreted as consequences of sexual selection and/or different reproductive roles in males and females. Sex-specific juvenile behaviour, however, has received less attention. Adult brown trout males are more aggressive than females during spawning and juvenile aggression may be genetically correlated with adult aggression in fish. We therefore tested the prediction that immature brown trout males are more aggressive and bolder than immature females. Because previous work has suggested that precocious maturation increases dominance in salmonids, we included precocious males in the study to test the prediction that early sexual maturation increase male aggression and boldness. Aggression and dominance relations were estimated in dyadic contests, whereas boldness was measured as a response to simulated predation risk using a model heron. Independent of maturity state, males initiated more than twice as many agonistic interactions as females in intersexual contests. However, males were not significantly more likely to win these contests than females. The response to a first predator attack did not differ between sex categories, but males reacted less to a second predator attack than females. Sexual maturity did not affect the antipredator response in males. Since there is no evidence from field studies that stream-living immature male and female salmonids differ in growth rate, it appears unlikely that the sex differences demonstrated are behavioural consequences of sex-specific investment in growth. It seems more likely that sex-specific behaviour arises as a correlated response to sexually selected gene actions promoting differential behaviour in adult males and females during reproduction. Alternatively, sex differences may develop gradually during juvenile life, because a gradual developmental program should be less costly than a sudden behavioural change at the onset of sexual maturity. [source] Experimental manipulation reveals the importance of refuge habitat temperature selected by lizardsAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 3 2010MICHA ANDERSSON Abstract Refuges provide shelter from predators, and protection from exposure to the elements, as well as other fitness benefits to animals that use them. In ectotherms, thermal benefits may be a critical aspect of refuges. We investigated microhabitat characteristics of refuges selected by a heliothermic scincid lizard, Carlia rubrigularis, which uses rainforest edges as habitat. We approached lizards in the field, simulating a predator attack, and quantified the refuge type used, and effect of environmental temperatures (air temperature, substrate temperature and refuge substrate temperature) on the amount of time skinks remained in refuges after hiding (emergence time). In respone to our approach, lizards were most likely to flee into leaf litter, rather than into rocks or woody debris, and emergence time was dependent on refuge substrate temperature, and on refuge substrate temperature relative to substrate temperature outside the refuge. Lizards remained for longer periods in warmer refuges, and in refuges that were similar in temperature to outside. We examined lizard refuge choice in response to temperature and substrate type in large, semi-natural outdoor enclosures. We experimentally manipulated refuge habitat temperature available to lizards, and offered them equal areas of leaf litter, woody debris and rocks. When refuge habitat temperature was unmanipulated, lizards (85%) preferred leaf litter, as they did in the field. However, when we experimentally manipulated the temperature of the leaf litter by shading, most skinks (75%) changed their preferred refuge habitat from leaf litter to woody debris or rocks. These results suggest that temperature is a critical determinant of refuge habitat choice for these diurnal ectotherms, both when fleeing from predators and when selecting daytime retreats. [source] Time budgets of Snow Geese Chen caerulescens and Ross's Geese Chen rossii in mixed flocks: implications of body size, ambient temperature and family associationsIBIS, Issue 1 2009JÓN EINAR JÓNSSON Body size affects foraging and forage intake rates directly via energetic processes and indirectly through interactions with social status and social behaviour. Ambient temperature has a relatively greater effect on the energetics of smaller species, which also generally are more vulnerable to predator attacks than are larger species. We examined variability in an index of intake rates and an index of alertness in Lesser Snow Geese Chen caerulescens caerulescens and Ross's Geese Chen rossii wintering in southwest Louisiana. Specifically we examined variation in these response variables that could be attributed to species, age, family size and ambient temperature. We hypothesized that the smaller Ross's Geese would spend relatively more time feeding, exhibit relatively higher peck rates, spend more time alert or raise their heads up from feeding more frequently, and would respond to declining temperatures by increasing their proportion of time spent feeding. As predicted, we found that Ross's Geese spent more time feeding than did Snow Geese and had slightly higher peck rates than Snow Geese in one of two winters. Ross's Geese spent more time alert than did Snow Geese in one winter, but alert rates differed by family size, independent of species, in contrast to our prediction. In one winter, time spent foraging and walking was inversely related to average daily temperature, but both varied independently of species. Effects of age and family size on time budgets were generally independent of species and in accordance with previous studies. We conclude that body size is a key variable influencing time spent feeding in Ross's Geese, which may require a high time spent feeding at the expense of other activities. [source] Early Mesozoic evolution of alivincular bivalve ligaments and its implications for the timing of the ,Mesozoic marine revolution'LETHAIA, Issue 2 2004MICHAEL HAUTMANN The early Mesozoic radiation of the Pteriomorphia was accompanied and furthered by the development of several new types of alivincular ligaments. These new types evolved as modifications of the primitive alivincular-areate (new term) ligament, which is characterized by an ontogenetic shift of both the central resilium and the straight lateral ligament in the direction of main shell growth. Arching of the attachment surface of the ligament led to the alivincular-arcuate (new term) ligament type, which has been realized by the Ostreidae only. By contrast, a replacement of the lateral ligament by hinge teeth, limiting the (primary) ligament to a central groove (alivincular-fossate, new term), has evolved independently in three families (Dimyidae, Plicatulidae and Spondylidae). Functionally, both kinds of modification effectively impede shearing of the valves and are interpreted as an antipredatory adaptation advantageous in the cemented habit of these families. The alivincular-alate (new term) ligament of the Entoliidae and Pectinidae differs from the other types of alivincular ligaments by different growth directions of resilium and lateral ligament, which result in an internal position of the resilium suitable for fast and powerful opening of the valves. This arrangement is an important prerequisite for effective swimming, which, in its turn, is a behaviour chiefly used to escape from predator attacks. The simultaneous early Mesozoic appearance of different antipredatory adaptations within independent clades hints at increased predator pressure as a stimulant and may therefore point to a contemporaneous proliferation of durophagous predators. Hence, an important aspect of the ,Mesozoic marine revolution' might have started earlier than previously thought. [source] A Bayesian analysis of the temporal change of local density of proboscis monkeys: Implications for environmental effects on a multilevel societyAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Ikki Matsuda Abstract To understand the effects of environmental factors on a social system with multilevel society in proboscis monkey units, the temporal change of the local density of sleeping sites of monkeys was investigated along the Menanggul river from May 2005 to 2006 in Malaysia. Proboscis monkeys typically return to riverside trees for night sleeping. The sleeping site locations of a one-male unit (BE-unit) were recorded and the locations of other one-male and all-male units within 500 m of the BE-unit were verified. In addition, environmental factors (food availability, the water level of the river, and the river width) and copulation frequency of BE-unit were recorded. From the analyses of the distance from the BE-unit to the nearest neighbor unit, no spatial clumping of the sleeping sites of monkey units on a smaller scale was detected. The results of a Bayesian analysis suggest that the conditional local density around the BE-unit can be predicted by the spatial heterogeneity along the river and by the temporal change of food availability, that is, the local density of monkey units might increase due to better sleeping sites with regard to predator attacks and clumped food sources; proboscis monkeys might not exhibit high-level social organization previously reported. In addition, this study shows the importance of data analysis that considers the effects of temporal autocorrelation, because the daily measurements of longitudinal data on monkeys are not independent of each other.
