Selected AbstractsA dental practice placement scheme: benefits for practitioners and undergraduatesEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF DENTAL EDUCATION, Issue 4 2001A. K. H. Pau Objectives: To report the feedback from general dental practitioners (GDPs) and dental undergraduates who participated in a general dental practice placement scheme. Methods:Subjects All 61 students in a year made 2 to 3 full day visits, individually or in pairs, to 44 general dental practices allocated to them. Thirty four GDPs completed and returned the questionnaire, representing a response rate of 77%. Data collection Formal feedback from the students and GDPs were obtained through 6 structured seminar sessions and a postal questionnaire respectively. Analysis Sifting, indexing and charting the data according to key issues and themes. Results: All 61 students attended the feedback sessions, 34 GDPs (response rate 77%) returned the questionnaire. The two most common themes that students reported having gained insight into were personal/professional development and practice management. The common positive aspects reported by the GDPs included exposure to the General Dental Service (GDS), motivation for undergraduate training and benefits for GDPs. These benefits included encouragement for the GDPs to reflect critically on their clinical practice, focus on their practice facilities and management, and stay in touch with developments in dental education. Through their visits and assignments, students gained skills in observation, interviewing, communication, relation-building and report writing. Conclusions: Placements of dental undergraduates in general dental practices enable students to gain insight into the GDS, develop key transferable skills and undergo professional socialisation. They are also beneficial and enjoyable for the GDPs who participated. [source] Is peer injecting a form of intimate partner abuse?HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE IN THE COMMUNITY, Issue 5 2007A qualitative study of the experiences of women drug users Abstract Women are over-represented as the recipients of injections of illicit drugs and are often injected by their intimate partners. This study used qualitative research to explore women drug users' experiences of abuse from intimate partners when being injected with illicit drugs. In-depth interviews were conducted with 45 women drug users in the city of Leeds and the area of North Nottinghamshire, UK. The practice of peer injecting illicit drugs places women recipients at risk of physical, economic and emotional abuse from their male intimate partner injectors. However, this was not a universal feature. In trusting, supportive intimate partner relationships peer injecting took place through reciprocal arrangements. Moving away from peer injecting was technically and emotionally difficult for women and rarely straightforward. The implications of the work are discussed as clinicians and wider drug service staff should be aware of the possibility of abuse and enquire about peer injecting when consulting with women injecting drug users. However, clinicians should avoid working within a simplistic clinical framework that views all peer injecting as intrinsically abusive. More research is needed to provide evidence for best practice. Until then, generic principles of best practice management of intimate partner abuse could apply, including enhancing women's motivation to effect change in an abusive situation. [source] Using quality report cards for reshaping dentist practice patterns: a pre-play communication approachJOURNAL OF EVALUATION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE, Issue 3 2008Chinho Lin PhD Abstract Rationale, aims and objectives, Understanding how information disclosure influences dentists' patterns of practice change is important in developing quality-improvement policies and cost containment. Thus, using quality report cards is a promising strategy for investigating whether dentists will reshape their patterns of practice because of the influence of peer comparison. Methods, Based on the coordination game, a data warehouse decision support system (DWDSS) was used as a pre-play communication instrument, along with the disclosure of quality report cards, which allow dentists to search their own service rates of dental restoration and restoration replacement as well as compare those results with others. Results and conclusions, The group using the DWDSS had a greater decrease in two indicators (i.e. service rates of dental restoration and restoration replacement) than the dentists who did not use it, which implies that the DWDSS is a useful facility for helping dentists filter and evaluate information for establishing the maximum utility in their practice management. The disclosure of information makes significant contributions to solving managerial problems associated with dentists' deviation of practice patterns. [source] Ototoxic eardrops and tympanic membrane perforations: Time for a change?JOURNAL OF PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH, Issue 8 2005Harvey Coates Abstract: Until recently the only available antibiotic eardrops for treatment of the discharging middle ear and mastoid cavity have been potentially ototoxic. With the advent of non-ototoxic fluoroquinolone eardrops, consensus panels in the USA, Canada and the UK have advocated the preferential use of these agents in the open middle ear. However, in Australia, no fluoroquinolone topical agent is approved for use with tympanic membrane perforations, and when used as an ,off label' eardrop, none is on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. This creates an ethical dilemma, particularly with best practice management of chronic suppurative otitis media in indigenous children. Despite concerns regarding resistance issues with ototopical use of systemic antibiotics, bacterial resistance has not been documented in major studies. For equity and ethical reasons, Australian regulatory authorities should consider approving a sterile non-ototoxic eardrop for use in the open middle ear. [source] Quality assessment in general practice trainersMEDICAL EDUCATION, Issue 12 2000M J F J Vernooij-Dassen Introduction General practice trainers hold a key position in general practice training, especially through their provision of a role model. Their own competence in general practice care is important in this regard. The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether a quality assessment programme could identify the strengths and weaknesses of GP trainers in four main domains of general practice care. Methods The quality assessment programme comprised validated tests on four domains of general practice: general medical knowledge, knowledge of medical-technical skills, consultation skills and practice management. The criterion for the identification of relative strengths and weaknesses of GP trainers was a variation in the scores of trainers indicating higher and lower scores (strengths and weaknesses) within each domain. Results GP trainers (n=105) were invited to participate in the study and 90% (n=94) did so. The variation in scores allowed the indication of strengths and weaknesses. Main strengths were: general medical knowledge of the digestive system; knowledge of medical skills relating to the skin; consultation skills concerning empathy; practice management with regard to accessibility. Main weaknesses were: general medical knowledge of the neurological system; knowledge of the medical/technical skills relating to the endocrine metabolic and nutritional system; consultation skills regarding shared decision making; practice management involving cooperation with staff and other care providers. Discussion This first systematic evaluation of GP trainers identified their strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses identified will be used in the improvement process as topics for collective improvement in the GP trainers' general curriculum and in individual learning plans. [source] |
