The effect of maternal size on larval characteristics of Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus

Abstract The objective of this work was to study the relationship between female size (weight) and variables of egg and larval stage of Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus. In this study, 19 female breeders were captured in Caspian Sea and fertilized by routine methods. Positive significant correlations (P<0.05) were established between female weight and ovulated eggs per female, time of second mitosis division and volume of yolk-sac at hatching. There was not significant correlation (r=0.33, P=0.161) between female weight and egg diameter. Female weight was not affected weight of larvae at hatching time (r=0.37, P=0.119), as well as larval length (r=,0.14, P=0.558) and larval weight at the end of the experiment (48 hours after first feeding) (r=0.16, P=0.491). Mortality rate during yolk-sac absorption was higher with increased female weight but their correlation was not significant (r=0.40, P=0.076). During the first feeding stage, mortality rate was 13.39% and there was no significant correlation between mortality rate in this period and female weight (r=,0.12, P=0.613). Conclusively, as a result female size influenced fecundity, time of second mitosis division and yolk-sac volume at hatching time without affecting mortality rate during yolk-sac absorption and first feeding stage in Persian sturgeon. Thus, smaller female broods do not cause more mortality than larger ones in larval production and they can be used in reproduction procedure. [source]


Effect of some characters on the population growth of mite Varroa jacobsoni in Apis mellifera L colonies and results of a bi-directional selection

Two lines of honey bees (Apis mellifera ligustica) were selectively propagated by instrumental insemination using the population growth of the Varroa mite as a criteria. Different infestation rates are at least partially genetic since selection produced significant bi-directional differences between lines over a period of three subsequent generations. There was no correlation between several behavioural and physiological characteristics which are potentially associated with Varroa resistance (hygienic behaviour, physical damage to mites, infertility of the intruding mites) and the development of the Varroa population after artificial infestation. There was a positive significant correlation between the total mites in the colonies and the amount of reared brood. Colony infestation was also positively correlated with the amount of honey harvested. [source]


Impact of high-pressure and traditional thermal processing of tomato purée on carotenoids, vitamin C and antioxidant activity

Abstract Bioactive compounds (carotenoids and vitamin C) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH,) scavenging activity [50% depletion of initial DPPH, radical (EC50) and antiradical efficiency (AE)], in aqueous (AQ) and organic (OR) fractions, were measured in tomato purée subjected to high-pressure (HP) (400 MPa/25 °C/15 min), low pasteurisation (LPT) (70 °C/30 s), high pasteurisation (HPT) (90 °C/1 min), freezing (F) (,38 °C/15 min), and HPT plus F (HPT + F). In addition, physical and physicochemical parameters were evaluated. CIELab uniform colour space parameters (lightness, L*; green-red tonality, a*; and blue-yellow tonality, b*) were significantly higher both in the untreated and in the HP tomato purée than in the rest of the samples. Individual and total carotenoids, and provitamin A carotenoids, were significantly higher in HP tomato purée than in the untreated and other treated tomato purées. Ascorbic acid and total vitamin C were significantly lower in HP, LPT, HPT, and HPT + F tomato purées than in the untreated and F purées. In the AQ fractions, we found an inverse significant correlation between both ascorbic acid and total vitamin C and EC50AQ; and a positive significant correlation with AEAQ. In the OR fractions, a significant correlation was found between EC50OR and AEOR parameters and lycopene and total carotenoids. Farmers' perception of treated paper mill effluent irrigation

Abstract The utilization of treated paper mill effluents for irrigation offers many benefits such as conservation of water resources, conversion of barren land into irrigated area, addition of nutrients to the soil and plant and above all the reduction of pollution of inland water bodies. However, the utility of this effluent irrigation programme depends mainly on farmers' acceptability, adoption and management of the scheme. Knowledge about the farmers' perception is thus very much imperative for further advocacy of the effluent irrigation programme. The determinants of farmers' perception of treated paper mill effluent irrigation is a pre-requisite for the formulation of better programmes and strategies for the support of an unobstructed adoption and for the long-term sustainability of effluent irrigation schemes. The present study was conducted to assess the farmers' perception and the determinants that influence the adoption of treated paper mill effluent irrigation by interviewing a random sample of 120 farmers, using a well-structured interview schedule in paper mill effluent irrigated area in Tamil Nadu in India. The study revealed that there exists positive significant correlation between the perception and the characteristics of the farmers viz. educational status, farm size, annual income, mass media exposure, innovativeness and risk orientation. The response analysis of the perception revealed that treated paper mill effluent as alternative assured supply of irrigation water, conversion of elevated dry lands to irrigated land, changing of cropping pattern to sugarcane, increase in socioeconomic status of the farmers, incentives and technical inputs by the paper mill authorities and above all farmers' participation in planning, implementation and management of the effluent irrigation schemes influenced the farmers to form positive perception.
