We report a case of microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) involving a large portion of the face, one of the largest of any MAC reported thus far in this area, and review the literature regarding the nature of the tumor and available treatments. We also review all of the reported cases of metastases and the possible role of radiation in the etiopathogenesis of this tumor. Objective. To review the literature about what is known about therapy for MAC and what options are available to patients who have this disease. Materials and Methods. Case report and review of the literature. Results. Of the 274 cases of MAC thus far reported, there are 6 cases of metastases, only 1 of which resulted in death. Conclusion. Mohs surgery should be the treatment of choice for this tumor; however, when extirpation entails sufficiently large morbidity, given the low rate of metastases and mortality, observation is a reasonable alternative. The methodology uses a two-step impression of the contralateral unobstructed naris and exterior valve region to generate a two-piece injection mold. The mold is used to fabricate a soft silicone-based anatomical stent. It supports an intranasal skin graft that was placed to reduce the risk of granulation. [source] Structural and Ultrastructural Study of the Intracranial Portion of the Oculomotor, Trochlear and Abducent Nerves in DogANATOMIA, HISTOLOGIA, EMBRYOLOGIA, Issue 3 2006J. Vivo Summary The right intracranial portion of the oculomotor, trochlear and abducent nerves were removed from six adult German shepherd dogs and analysed by light and electron microscopy. In all cases the nerve sectional area was calculated. Unmyelinated and myelinated fibres were analysed and number, diameter and cross-sectional area were calculated. In myelinated fibres, also calculated were the corresponding axon area and diameter, and myelin sheath thickness. The mean number of myelinated fibres was 8543.50 ± 1231.85 being the unmyelinated 1402 ± 241.58 in the oculomotor nerve; 1509 ± 223.17 and 287.67 ± 72.28 in the trochlear nerve and 2473.00 ± 211.41 and 231.25 ± 92.67 respectively in the abducent. The mean diameter was 10.23 ± 0.68 ,m in myelinated and 0.43 ± 0.21 for unmyelinated in oculomotor nerve, 10.53 ± 0.55 ,m and 0.33 ± 0.04 for the trochlear, and 10.45 ± 1.27 ,m and 0.47 ± 0.09 in the abducent nerve respectively. This study reveals that oculomotor, trochlear and abducent nerves of the dog show structural and ultra-structural features similar to the same nerves in other species. [source] Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia , an unusual reaction following tattoo: report of a case and review of the literatureINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 7 2007Wei Cui MD A 59-year-old woman presented with an itchy and uncomfortable raised lesion at a tattoo site (Fig. 1) on the lateral aspect of the left leg, just above the ankle. The tattoo had been placed 2 years before her presentation and the tattoo site was sun exposed. Immediately after she had the tattoo, she noticed redness of the skin. After a week, a pruritic and red scaly nodule developed that continued to gradually enlarge until her presentation. The patient had tried topical vitamin A and D ointment with no relief. The patient also had tattoos on the arms without any noticeable skin changes. The patient reported that the tattoo procedure on her leg was more painful than that on her arms, and was performed by a different (and perhaps inexperienced) tattoo artist. The original tattoo contained red, green, and yellow pigments. Figure 1. Raised nodular lesion with irregular margins A diagnosis of tattoo granuloma was considered; squamous cell carcinoma and fungal infection were included in the differential diagnosis. A punch biopsy was performed, followed by complete surgical excision of the lesion with a split-thickness skin graft from the right thigh. The skin excision specimen showed a 3 × 2.5-cm granular and pitted pink lesion with well-demarcated, somewhat irregular borders. The lesion was raised 0.5 cm above the skin surface. The lesion was present in the center of the original tattoo. Portions of the original tattoo with green and blue,green pigmentation were visible on either side of the lesion. No satellite lesions were identified. Microscopically, the raised lesion demonstrated striking pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, with irregular acanthosis of the epidermis and follicular infundibula, hyperkeratosis, and parakeratosis (Fig. 2). Follicular plugging was present with keratin-filled cystic spaces. There was a brisk mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis, composed primarily of lymphocytes, with admixed plasma cells and histiocytes. Giant cells were occasionally identified. Dermal pigment deposition was noted both within the lesion and in the surrounding skin, corresponding to the original tattoo. Variable dermal fibrosis was noted, with thick collagen bundles in some areas. There was no evidence of epidermal keratinocytic atypia, dyskeratosis, or increased suprabasal mitotic activity. Special stains (periodic acid,Schiff and acid-fast) for microorganisms were negative. Figure 2. Stringam automation; écluses; algorithme de contrôle; irrigation Abstract Canal automation equipment in the East Bench Irrigation District in Dillon, Montana, was over 30 years old and needed to be replaced. Portions of the old automation system were salvaged in an attempt to reduce rehabilitation costs. Because wiring diagrams were not available for the old control system, time would have been saved if the old control system were completely removed and replaced with a completely new system. Data communication via radio and bubbler water level sensors proved to be troublesome. After three seasons of operation, problems with the new automation system were corrected, but it became evident that a technician was needed to maintain the system. [source] Mode of attachment and lesions associated with trypanorhynch cestodes in the gastrointestinal tracts of two species of sharks collected from coastal waters of BorneoJOURNAL OF FISH DISEASES, Issue 7 2006J D Borucinska Abstract Lesions associated with two species of tapeworms within the digestive tract of wild-caught specimens of the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, and the sicklefin weasel shark, Hemigaleus microstoma, from Malaysian Borneo are described. Portions of the glandular stomach and pyloric gut with parasites were removed and fixed in 10% formalin buffered in sea water. Whole mounts, histological sections of tissues with and without worms in situ, and scanning electron microscopy images of detached worms were examined. Both species of cestodes belonged to the trypanorhynch family Tentaculariidae. Heteronybelinia estigmena was found in large numbers parasitizing the pyloric gut of C. leucas; an unidentified tentaculariid was found in relatively small numbers in both the glandular stomach and pyloric gut of H. microstoma. Both species burrowed their scoleces deeply in the mucosa and attached via hooked tentacles and unciniform microtriches of the scolex. The lesions induced by the parasites were marked in both sharks and ranged from acute necrotizing to chronic granulomatous gastroenteritis. Regenerative hyperplasia and intestinal metaplasia of gastric epithelium were also present. The severity and character of pathology was causally linked to the intensity of infection, the attachment mode of the parasites, and to the anatomophysiological relationships within the gut of the host shark. [source] cDNA-arrays and real-time quantitative PCR techniques in the investigation of chronic achilles tendinosisJOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH, Issue 6 2003Håkan Alfredson The aetiology and pathogenesis of chronic painful Achilles tendinosis are unknown. This investigation aimed to use cDNA arrays and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) technique to study tendinosis and control tissue samples. Five patients (females mean age 57.1 ± 4.3 (years ±SD)) with chronic painful Achilles tendinosis were included. From all patients, one biopsy was taken from the area with tendinosis and one from a clinically normal area (control) of the tendon. The tissue samples were immediately immersed in RNAlater and frozen at ,80°C until RNA extraction. Portions of pooled RNA from control and tendinosis sites, respectively, were transcribed to cDNA, radioactively labelled (32P), hybridized to cDNA expression arrays, and exposed to phosphoimager screens over night. Expressions of specific genes, shown to be regulated in the cDNA array analysis, were analyzed in the individual samples using real-time PCR. cDNA arrays showed that gene expressions for matrix-metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), fibronectin subunit B (FNRB), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and mitogen-activated protein kinase p38 (MAPKp38) were up-regulated, while matrix-metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) and decorin were down-regulated, in tendinosis tissue compared with control tissue. Using real-time PCR, , and , patients showed up-regulation of MMP-2 and FNRB mRNA, respectively. For decorin, VEGF, and MAPKp38, real-time PCR revealed a great variability among patients. Interestingly, the mRNAs for several cytokines and cytokine receptors were not regulated, indicating the absence of an inflammatory process in chronic painful Achilles tendinosis. T. Rosnes Abstract Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) combined with superchilling (,1°C) was evaluated as a mild preservation method for farmed spotted wolf-fish (Anarhichas minor). Portions were packaged in air and in CO2:N2 (60%:40%) atmosphere with a gas:product ratio of approximately 1, at superchilled (,1.0°C ± 0.2°C) or chilled (+4.0°C ± 0.2°C) temperatures. A reduced bacterial growth (p < 0.001), measured as aerobic plate counts (APC) and psychrotrophic bacteria, was observed in modified atmosphere (MA) packaged wolf-fish at both ,1°C and +4°C, compared to portions in air. MA-packaged wolf-fish had improved odour and flavour scores (p < 0.05), but also a higher drip loss than fish stored in air. A shelf-life of 15 days was obtained at ,1°C for MA-packaged fish compared to 8,10 days in air, and at 4°C the shelf-life was 13 days in MA and 6,8 days in air. Larsen MD Abstract Recurrent aspiration of cow's milk has been shown to alter neural control of airways in young rabbits (Gelfand et al., 1997). The purpose of this study was to define the mechanisms responsible for in vitro cholinergic hyperresponsiveness in this model. Beginning at 1 week of age, rabbits received either 0.5 mL/kg whole cow's milk or sterile saline intranasally while under light anesthesia. This was repeated each weekday for 2 weeks. At 8 weeks of age, rabbits were sacrificed. Portions of lungs underwent lavage with sterile saline. Tracheal smooth muscle (TSM) segments were also removed. Segments were assessed for acetylcholine (ACh) release by high-performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC) with electrochemical detection or acetylcholinesterase (AChE) kinetic activity by spectrophotometry. Substance P (SP), a neuropeptide that can increase ACh release from nerves, was also assessed using an enzyme immunoassay to define the content in lavage and TSM segments. Immunohistochemistry for SP within airways was also assessed. We found that recurrent aspiration of milk led to statistically significant alterations in many parameters. Acetylcholine release was significantly greater in segments of airways from rabbits that had aspirated cow's milk (27.5,±,1.7 vs. 20.1,±,1.6 pmol/min/g tissue) than saline. At the same time, AChE activity was less in the group that aspirated milk (8.7,±,0.4 vs. 10.2,±,0.5 nmol/min/mg protein) compared to saline. The amount of SP within both lavage as well as tissue homogenates was greater in the group that had aspirated the foreign protein (159.1,±,28.9 vs. 41.9,±,5.2 pmol/mg protein in lavage; 158.7,±,31.9 vs. 80.5,±,7.8 pmol/mg protein in tissues) than saline controls. While total cholinergic nerve density as assessed by choline acetyltransferase was not significantly different between groups, SP-positive immunoreactive nerves were easily identified in the group that aspirated cow's milk. This study suggests that cholinergic hyperresponsiveness caused by repeated aspiration of milk is due to several abnormalities, including prejunctional (increase in ACh release) as well as junctional (decrease in AChE) mechanisms within the airways. MATSUI SUMMARY To determine whether there is an association between intracellular cytokine profiles and the expression of surface antigens, we performed a simultaneous flow cytometric analysis of these laboratory parameters in 11 healthy volunteers. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were double-stained for CD4 or CD8, as well as CD11a, CD25, CD26, CD29 and CD45RA or the chemokine receptors CCR3, CCR4, CCR5 or CXCR3. Portions of the cell samples were cultured for 4 h in the presence of 1 µm monensin and 20 µg/ml brefeldin A with or without stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate plus ionomycin for the detection of intracellular interferon- , (IFN- ,), interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)- ,, and IL-4. As a result, CD4+CD29high helper inducer T cells were closely associated with IFN- , and TNF- , producing CD4+ cells, while CD4+CXCR3+ cells showed a negative correlation with IL-4-producing cells, suggesting that both of these CD4+ subsets consist mainly of Th1 cells. In contrast, CD4+CD45RA+ cells were correlated inversely with IFN- , and TNF- , -producing cells, and CD8+CD11ahigh killer effector and total CCR5+ cells showed an inverse correlation with IL-2 producing cells, suggesting an immunoregulatory role for these three subsets in non-pathological conditions. Therefore, monitoring of lymphocyte subsets that express functional surface antigens could provide additional information concerning immune deviation, as assessed by the production of Th1/Th2 type cytokines. For distributed ray casting, the scene must be partitioned between nodes for good load balancing, and a strict view-dependent priority order is required for image composition. In this paper, we define the load balanced network distribution (LBND) problem and map it to the NP-complete precedence constrained job-shop scheduling problem. We introduce a kd-tree solution and a dynamic programming solution. To process a massive data set, either a parallel or an out-of-core approach is required. Parallel preprocessing is performed by render nodes on data, which are allocated using a static data structure. Volumetric data sets often contain a large portion of voxels that will never be rendered, or empty space. Parallel preprocessing fails to take advantage of this. Our slab-projection slice, introduced in this paper, tracks empty space across consecutive slices of data to reduce the amount of data distributed and rendered. It is used to facilitate out-of-core bricking and kd-tree partitioning. Load balancing using each of our approaches is compared with traditional methods using several segmented regions of the Visible Korean data set. In contrast to previous mesh compression techniques, the approach enables us to progressively decompress an arbitrary portion of a mesh without decoding other non-interesting parts. This simultaneous support of random accessibility and progressiveness is accomplished by adapting selective refinement of a multiresolution mesh to the mesh compression domain. We present a theoretical analysis of our connectivity coding scheme and provide several experimental results. The performance of our coder is about 11 bits for connectivity and 21 bits for geometry with 12-bit quantization, which can be considered reasonably good under the constraint that no fixed neighborhood information can be used for coding to support decompression in a random order. Recorded data can include equality, upper bound, and lower bound data. The proposed approach properly accounts for all the prevailing uncertainties, including model errors arising from an inaccurate model form or missing variables, measurement errors, statistical uncertainty, and volitional uncertainty. As an illustration of the proposed approach, the project progress and final time-to-completion of an example project are forecasted. For this illustration construction of civilian nuclear power plants in the United States is considered. This application considers two cases (1) no information is available prior to observing the actual progress data of a specified plant and (2) the construction progress of eight other nuclear power plants is available. The example shows that an informative prior is important to make accurate predictions when only a few records are available. This is also the time when forecasts are most valuable to the project manager. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) was used to scan the upper portion of these cores, resulting in a stack of two-dimensional grayscale images. Image processing techniques were utilized to isolate the void pixels from the solid pixels and reconstruct the three-dimensional surface topography. The resulting three-dimensional surfaces were reduced to two-dimensional "map of heights" images, whereby the grayscale intensity of each pixel within the image represented the vertical location of the surface at that point with respect to the lowest point on the surface. The "map of heights" images were analyzed using four mathematical methods, namely the Hessian model, the Fast Fourier transform (FFT), the wavelet analysis, and the power spectral density (PSD). [source] Dynamic scratch-pad memory management with data pipelining for embedded systemsCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 13 2010Yanqin Yang Abstract In this paper, we propose an effective data pipelining technique, SPDP (Scratch-Pad Data Pipelining), for dynamic scratch-pad memory (SPM) management with DMA (Direct Memory Access). Our basic idea is to overlap the execution of CPU instructions and DMA operations. In SPDP, based on the iteration access patterns of arrays, we group multiple iterations into a block to improve the data locality of regular array accesses. We allocate the data of multiple iterations into different portions of the SPM. In this way, when the CPU executes instructions and accesses data from one portion of the SPM, DMA operations can be performed to transfer data between the off-chip memory and another portion of SPM simultaneously. We perform code transformation to insert DMA instructions to achieve the data pipelining. We have implemented our SPDP technique with the IMPACT compiler, and conduct experiments using a set of loop kernels from DSPstone, Mibench, and Mediabench on the cycle-accurate VLIW simulator of Trimaran. DiRienzo Abstract Electrical power usage contributes significantly to the operational costs of large computer systems. At the Hypersonic Missile Technology Research and Operations Center (HMT-ROC) our system usage patterns provide a significant opportunity to reduce operating costs since there are a small number of dedicated users. The relatively predictable nature of our usage patterns allows for the scheduling of computational resource availability. We take advantage of this predictability to shut down systems during periods of low usage to reduce power consumption. With interconnected computer cluster systems, reducing the number of online nodes is more than a simple matter of throwing the power switch on a portion of the cluster. The paper discusses these issues and an approach for power reduction strategies for a computational system with a heterogeneous system mix that includes a large (1560-node) Apple Xserve PowerPC supercluster. In practice, the average load on computer systems may be much less than the peak load although the infrastructure supporting the operation of large computer systems in a computer or data center must still be designed with the peak loads in mind. Given that a significant portion of the time, systems loads can be less than full peak, an opportunity exists for cost savings if idle systems can be dynamically throttled back, slept, or shut off entirely. The paper describes two separate strategies that meet the requirements for both power conservation and system availability at HMT-ROC. The first approach, for legacy systems, is not much more than a brute force approach to power management which we call Time-Driven System Management (TDSM). The second approach, which we call Dynamic-Loading System Management (DLSM), is applicable to more current systems with ,Wake-on-LAN' capability and takes a more granular approach to the management of system resources. [source] Efficient communication using message prediction for clusters of multiprocessorsCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 10 2002Ahmad Afsahi Abstract With the increasing uniprocessor and symmetric multiprocessor computational power available today, interprocessor communication has become an important factor that limits the performance of clusters of workstations/multiprocessors. Many factors including communication hardware overhead, communication software overhead, and the user environment overhead (multithreading, multiuser) affect the performance of the communication subsystems in such systems. A significant portion of the software communication overhead belongs to a number of message copying operations. Ideally, it is desirable to have a true zero-copy protocol where the message is moved directly from the send buffer in its user space to the receive buffer in the destination without any intermediate buffering. However, due to the fact that message-passing applications at the send side do not know the final receive buffer addresses, early arrival messages have to be buffered at a temporary area. In this paper, we show that there is a message reception communication locality in message-passing applications. We have utilized this communication locality and devised different message predictors at the receiver sides of communications. In essence, these message predictors can be efficiently used to drain the network and cache the incoming messages even if the corresponding receive calls have not yet been posted. The performance of these predictors, in terms of hit ratio, on some parallel applications are quite promising and suggest that prediction has the potential to eliminate most of the remaining message copies. We also show that the proposed predictors do not have sensitivity to the starting message reception call, and that they perform better than (or at least equal to) our previously proposed predictors. [source] Development of the pons in human fetusesCONGENITAL ANOMALIES, Issue 2 2007Toshihisa Hatta ABSTRACT Morphometric and histological studies of the pons were performed by light microscopy in 28 cases of externally normal human fetuses ranging from 90 to 246 mm in crown-rump length (CRL) and from 13 to 28 weeks of gestation. The brainstems of fetuses were embedded in celloidin or paraffin, and transverse sections were prepared. The pons was divided into two regions at the most ventral margin of the medial lemniscus at the level of the motor trigeminal nucleus. The relationships between the total dorsoventral length, ventral length, and dorsal length of the pons versus CRL and gestational ages were calculated, and empiric formulas were fitted. It was found that the ventral portion increased in size more rapidly than the dorsal portion. The proportion of the ventral portion in the total dorsoventral length was constitutively higher than that of the dorsal portion in the present range of CRL. In the pontine nuclei, from 235 mm in the CRL, some large cells with rich cytoplasm, pale nuclei, and a distinct nucleolus appeared on the dorsal side of the pyramidal tract. According to Weigert stained preparations, the first myelinated fibers in each motor root of the trigeminal, abducent, and facial nerves were recognized at 130,140 mm in CRL and the medial lemniscus at 230,235 mm. Schroeder MD Abstract Objective., Intracardiac arteriovenous malformations are rare and may be associated with sudden death in adults. This case report describes an intracardiac left coronary arteriovenous malformation in a 7-year-old boy with a suspected familial cutaneous vascular malformation syndrome. The patient presented with a diastolic murmur, exercise intolerance, chest pain, and a left ventricular mass. Methods., The left ventricular mass was initially identified by echocardiography. Subsequently, a computed tomography scan revealed the vascular nature of the lesion. We hypothesized that the lesion represented either an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) or a hemangioma. These lesions are thought to cause coronary steal and myocardial dysfunction. Skin biopsies of the patient's cutaneous lesions revealed capillary hyperplasia, which was not consistent with either hemangioma or AVM. Thus, a surgical biopsy and partial resection of the mass was performed. Results., The surgical pathology of the cardiac mass was consistent with an AVM. Within 6 months following partial resection of the mass, the patient unexpectedly developed a left ventricular pseudoaneurysm at the resection site and required re-operation. Although a portion of the mass remains, both the patient's chest pain and exercise tolerance have improved subjectively. Conclusion., Patients with cutaneous vascular malformations and diastolic murmurs, as well as cardiac symptoms, should undergo echocardiography or alternative imaging modalities to screen for treatable pathological myocardial vascular malformations. REEVES gestión de ecosistemas; gestión ribereña; modelos de soporte de decisiones; terrenos públicos Abstract:,Implemented in 1994, the Aquatic Conservation Strategy of the Northwest Forest Plan was designed to restore and maintain ecological processes for aquatic and riparian area conservation on federal lands in the western portion of the Pacific Northwest. We used decision support models to quantitatively evaluate changes in the condition of selected watersheds. In the approximately 10 years since strategy implementation, watershed condition scores changed modestly, but conditions improved in 64% of 250 sampled watersheds, declined in 28%, and remained relatively the same in 7%. Watersheds that had the largest declines included some where wildfires burned 30,60% of their area. The overall statistical distribution of the condition scores did not change significantly, however. Much of the increase in watershed condition was related to improved riparian conditions. The number of large trees (>51 cm diameter at breast height) increased 2,4%, and there were substantial reductions in tree harvest and other disturbances along streams. Whether such changes will translate into longer-term improvements in aquatic ecosystems across broader landscapes remains to be seen. Resumen:,Implementada en 1994, la Estrategia de Conservación Acuática del Plan Forestal del Noroeste fue diseñada para restaurar y mantener procesos ecológicos para la conservación de áreas acuáticas y ribereñas en terrenos federales en la porción occidental del Pacífico Noroeste (E.U.A.). Utilizamos modelos de soporte de decisiones para evaluar cuantitativamente los cambios en la condición de cuencas seleccionadas. En los casi 10 años desde la implementación de la estrategia, los valores de la condición de las cuencas cambiaron someramente, pero las condiciones mejoraron en 64% de las 250 cuencas muestreadas, declinaron en 28% y permanecieron relativamente iguales en 7%. Las cuencas con las mayores declinaciones incluyeron algunas en las que 30-60% de su superficie fue quemada por fuegos sin control. Sin embargo, la distribución espacial total de los valores no cambió significativamente. Buena parte del incremento en las condiciones de la cuenca se relacionó con el mejoramiento de las condiciones ribereñas. We typed seven microsatellite loci and sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial DNA control region of Island Scrub-Jays and their closest mainland relative, the Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica), to assess levels of variability and effective population size and to examine the evolutionary relationship between the two species. The estimated female effective population size, Nef, of the Island Scrub-Jay was 1603 (90% confidence interval: 1481,1738) and was about 7.5% of the size of the mainland species. Island and Western Scrub-Jays have highly divergent control-region sequences, and the value of 3.14 ± 0.09% sequence divergence between the two species suggests a divergence time of approximately 151,000 years ago. Because the four northern Channel Islands were joined as one large island as recently as 11,000 years ago, extinctions must have occurred on the three other northern Channel islands, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Anacapa, highlighting the vulnerability of the remaining population. We assessed the evolutionary significance of four island endemics, including the Island Scrub-Jay, based on both genetic and adaptive divergence. Our results show that the Island Scrub-Jay is a distinct species of high conservation value whose history and adaptive potential is not well predicted by study of other island vertebrates. Clasificamos siete locus microsatelitales y secuenciamos una porción de la región control del ADN mitocondrial de A. insularis y su pariente continental más cercano A. californica para evaluar niveles de variabilidad y tamaño poblacional efectivo y examinar las relaciones evolutivas entre las dos especies. El tamaño poblacional efectivo de hembras, Neh, de A. insularis fue estimado en 1603 (90% CI: 1481-1738) y fue aproximadamente 7.5% del tamaño de la especie continental. Richter By managing river flows for water supplies and power generation, water management agencies have inadvertently caused considerable degradation of riverine ecosystems and associated biodiversity. New approaches for meeting human needs for water while conserving the ecological integrity of riverine ecosystems are greatly needed. We describe an approach for identifying the natural flooding characteristics that must be protected or restored to maintain riparian ( floodplain) ecosystems along meandering rivers. We developed a computer model to simulate flood-driven changes in the relative abundance of riparian patch types along the Yampa River in Colorado ( U.S.A.). The model is based on research suggesting that the duration of flooding at or above 209 m3 per second (125% of bankfull discharge) is particularly important in driving lateral channel migration, which is responsible for initiating ecological succession in the Yampa's riparian forest. Other hydrologic variables, such as the magnitude of annual peak flows, were not as strongly correlated with lateral channel migration rates. Model simulations enabled us to tentatively identify a threshold of alteration of flood duration that could lead to substantial changes in the abundance of forest patch types over time should river flows be regulated by future water projects. Based on this analysis, we suggest an ecologically compatible water management approach that avoids crossing flood alteration thresholds and provides opportunity to use a portion of flood waters for human purposes. Recommended improvements to the Yampa model include obtaining additional low-elevation aerial photographs of the river corridor to enable better estimation of channel migration rates and vegetation changes. These additional data should greatly improve the model's accuracy and predictive capabilities and therefore its management value. Resumen: La composición y estructura de ecosistemas ribereños están fuertemente ligadas a la variabilidad hidrológica natural. Al manejar el flujo de ríos para abastecer agua y generar energía, las agencias de manejo de agua han causado inadvertidamente una degradación considerable de los ecosistemas ribereños y la biodiversidad asociada a ellos. Se necesitan nuevas estrategias para satisfacer las necesidades humanas de agua al mismo tiempo que se conserva la integridad de los ecosistemas ribereños. Describimos una estrategia para identificar las características de inundaciones naturales que deben ser protegidas o restauradas para mantener ecosistemas riparios ( planicies de inundación) a lo largo de ríos sinuosos. Desarrollamos un modelo de computadora para simular los cambios causados por inundaciones en la abundancia relativa de tipos de parche ripario a lo largo del río Yampa, en Colorado ( Estados Unidos de Norteamérica). Latta Published accounts of national, multidisciplinary planning efforts and priority setting for avian conservation are not common. I describe the process and results of a broad-based, grassroots-oriented avian conservation planning workshop held in the Dominican Republic in which we designed a coordinated strategy for avian conservation in the country. The planning process sought to (1) increase communication and cooperation among conservationists; (2) familiarize participants with resources pertinent to avian conservation; (3) encourage the transfer of information between researchers and managers; (4) promote the concepts of long-term avian monitoring, avian conservation plans, and species management plans; and (5) develop a common, multidisciplinary strategy to promote the conservation of birds in the Dominican Republic. The workshop highlighted group discussions among research biologists, managers, educators, and public policy specialists to assess avian conservation needs and priorities with respect to each discipline and has since galvanized a significant portion of the conservation community around several cooperative projects involving diverse segments of the community. Avian biologists can play a significant role in conservation efforts through a willingness to work with key players in diverse fields and to envision holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to conservation issues. Resumen: Cuando los biologícos investigadores incursionan en la biología de la conservación enfrentan nuevos desafíos, especialmente en países extranjeros, al intentar prestar apoyo para esfuerzos de planificación de la conservación. Los informes publicados de esfuerzos de planificación nacional, multidisciplinaria y de establecimiento de prioridades para la conservación de aves no son comunes. Describo el proceso y los resultados de un taller nacional de planificación para conservación de aves en la República Dominicana que utilizaba un proceso fundamental de base amplia donde creamos una estrategia coordinada para la conservación de aves del país. El proceso de planeación buscaba (1) aumentar comunicación y cooperación entre conservacionistas, (2) familiarizar a los participantes con los recursos disponibles para la conservación de aves, (3) estimular la transferencia de información entre investigadores y manejadores, (4) promover los conceptos del monitoreo de aves a largo plazo, planes de conservación de especies y planes de manejo de especies y (5) desarrollar una estrategia multidisciplinaria común para promover la conservación de aves en la República Dominicana. Farage Urinary and faecal incontinence affects a significant portion of the elderly population. The increase in the incidence of incontinence is not only dependent on age but also on the onset of concomitant ageing issues such as infection, polypharmacy, and decreased cognitive function. If incontinence is left untreated, a host of dermatological complications can occur, including incontinence dermatitis, dermatological infections, intertrigo, vulvar folliculitis, and pruritus ani. The presence of chronic incontinence can produce a vicious cycle of skin damage and inflammation because of the loss of cutaneous integrity. Minimizing skin damage caused by incontinence is dependent on successful control of excess hydration, maintenance of proper pH, minimization of interaction between urine and faeces, and prevention of secondary infection. Even though incontinence is common in the aged, it is not an inevitable consequence of ageing but a disorder that can and should be treated. Appropriate clinical management of incontinence can help seniors continue to lead vital active lives as well as avoid the cutaneous sequelae of incontinence. A common tool used by SMEs to improve their environmental performance is the environmental management system (EMS), which has the disadvantage that it has been developed with larger organizations in mind. A common approach used by Swedish SMEs to facilitate the implementation of an EMS is joint EMS and group certification. This paper evaluates this approach by means of a case study. It is found that the approach is effective for small and micro-sized companies in achieving ISO 14001 certification as fast and cost effectively as possible. A few short cuts including joint environmental policy and objectives and insufficient environmental organization are however threatening to undermine the trustworthiness of the approach. Notwithstanding these flaws, however, it must be concluded that the joint EMS approach is a good alternative for small and micro-sized companies. Masuda Abstract Aim:, The dystrophin,glycoprotein complex (DGC) and focal adhesion complex (FAC) are transmembrane structures in muscle fibres that link the intracellular cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. DGC and FAC proteins are abundant in slow-type muscles, indicating the structural reinforcement which play a pivotal role in continuous force output to maintain posture for long periods. The aim of the present study was to examine the expression of these structures across fast-type muscles containing different myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform patterns which reflect the fatigue-resistant characteristics of skeletal muscle. Methods:, We measured the expression of dystrophin and ,1 integrin (representative proteins of DGC and FAC respectively) in plantaris, extensor digitorum longus, tibialis anterior, red and white portions of gastrocnemius, superficial portion of vastus lateralis and diaphragm, in comparison with soleus (SOL) and cardiac muscle from rats. Results:, The expression of dystrophin and ,1 integrin correlated positively with the percentage of type I, IIa and IIx MHC isoforms and negatively with that of type IIb MHC isoform in fast-type skeletal muscles, and their expression was abundant in SOL and cardiac muscle. Conclusion:, Our results support the idea that DGC and FAC are among the factors that explain the fatigue-resistant property not only of slow-type but also of fast-type skeletal muscles. [source] Limited LCAs of pharmaceutical products: merits and limitations of an environmental management toolCORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT, Issue 2 2003Anne Marie de Jonge This article explores both the merits and the limitations of life cycle analysis (LCA) as an environmental management tool in the framework of the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, limited LCAs in the form of product lifecycle-oriented energy balances were established for two rather different pharmaceutical products. Primary energy requirements served as the single indicator for the products' direct and indirect environmental impacts. The functional units of the products were defined as the one year treatments of average patients. The results of the case studies indicate that the portion of the active substance in the pharmaceutical end product is an important predictor for the breakdown of energy requirements and thus environmental impacts over the life cycle. Despite its limitations, the energy balances provide first-hand indications of where eco-efficiency measures should be taken.
