DiBattista Estimating quantitative genetic parameters ideally takes place in natural populations, but relatively few studies have overcome the inherent logistical difficulties. For this reason, no estimates currently exist for the genetic basis of life-history traits in natural populations of large marine vertebrates. And yet such estimates are likely to be important given the exposure of this taxon to changing selection pressures, and the relevance of life-history traits to population productivity. We report such estimates from a long-term (1995,2007) study of lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) conducted at Bimini, Bahamas. We obtained these estimates by genetically reconstructing a population pedigree (117 dams, 487 sires, and 1351 offspring) and then using an "animal model" approach to estimate quantitative genetic parameters. We find significant additive genetic (co)variance, and hence moderate heritability, for juvenile length and mass. We also find substantial maternal effects for these traits at age-0, but not age-1, confirming that genotype,phenotype interactions between mother and offspring are strongest at birth; although these effects could not be parsed into their genetic and nongenetic components. Our results suggest that human-imposed selection pressures (e.g., size-selective harvesting) might impose noteworthy evolutionary change even in large marine vertebrates. We therefore use our findings to explain how maternal effects may sometimes promote maladaptive juvenile traits, and how lemon sharks at different nursery sites may show "constrained local adaptation." We also show how single-generation pedigrees, and even simple marker-based regression methods, can provide accurate estimates of quantitative genetic parameters in at least some natural systems. [source] INHIBITORY POTENTIAL OF WINE AND TEA AGAINST ,-AMYLASE AND ,-GLUCOSIDASE FOR MANAGEMENT OF HYPERGLYCEMIA LINKED TO TYPE 2 DIABETESJOURNAL OF FOOD BIOCHEMISTRY, Issue 1 2008YOUNG-IN KWON ABSTRACT Natural ,-amylase and ,-glucosidase inhibitors from food-grade plants offer an attractive strategy to manage postprandial hyperglycemia for type 2 diabetes management via control of starch breakdown and intestinal glucose absorption. In this study, four random sources of red and white wines as well as four types of teas were investigated for ,-amylase and ,-glucosidase inhibitory potential. Water extracts of black tea had the highest ,-glucosidase inhibitory activity, followed by white tea and oolong tea. All the randomly selected red wines had significant ,-glucosidase inhibitory activity compared to white wine. The ,-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the tea and wines correlated to the phenolic content, antioxidant activity and phenolic profile of the extracts. Further, these extracts had less or no ,-amylase inhibitory activity, indicating potential to overcome the side effects of undigested starch. This research has relevance for managing hyperglycemia and related oxidation-linked dysfunction and concurrently reducing problems of undigested starch. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS In this study anti-diabetic-relevant potential of wines and teas were confirmed in four types of red and white wines as well as four types of commonly available teas using in vitro enzyme assays for alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase inhibitory activities. In vitro inhibitory activities of these enzymes provide a strong biochemical rationale for further in vivo studies and dietary management strategy for type 2 diabetes through the control of glucose absorption. Further this phenolic antioxidant-enriched dietary strategy using specific beverage combinations can generate a whole food profile that has the potential to reduce hyperglycemia-induced pathogenesis and also associated complications linked to cellular oxidation stress. [source] ANALYSIS OF ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL USING A BIOASSAY BASED ON OXIDATION OF 5-(2 AMINOETHYL)BENZENE-1,2,4-TRIOL FOR SCREENING PLANT FOOD EXTRACTSJOURNAL OF FOOD BIOCHEMISTRY, Issue 4 2007YU YAO ABSTRACT Neurotoxic products including reactive quinones and oxygen species such as H2O2 are generated upon oxidation of 4-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-benzenediol (dopamine) and 5-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2,4-triol (6-OH dopamine). Moreover, neurotoxicity of 6-OH dopamine and related oxidative stress may be increased in the presence of cytochrome c (Cytc) that is released from its normal mitochondrial location. A Cytc-enhanced 6-OH dopamine oxidation reaction is presented as a model bioassay for identifying possible neuroprotective food antioxidants and their metabolites. A concentration-dependent effect was observed for Cytc upon 6-OH dopamine oxidation. Fruit/vegetable extracts, prepared from Fragaria and Pisum, were tested by this assay; a three- to fourfold greater antioxidant potency was observed for Fragaria. The results were discussed in terms of the content for antioxidant phytochemicals. In addition, potencies for these dietary antioxidants were compared to those of a related assay based on N,N,N,,N,-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylene-diamine peroxidation. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The bioassay presented herein is intended to be used for screening the antioxidant activities of purified dietary compounds and their in vivo metabolites, as well as crude plant extracts and other food preparations. Examples are provided by the use of fruit and vegetable extracts; and these activities arecompared with those of purified phytochemicals. Because of the potential relevance of this assay to some neurological disorders and mitochondrial dysfunctions, phytochemicals and food extracts with strong protective activities in this initial screen may be good candidates for further analyses (biochemical, cellular and animal experiments) related to such disorders e.g., related to dopaminergic neurodegeneration as discussed below. [source] PHYSICO-CHEMICAL ANALYSES, SENSORY EVALUATION AND POTENTIAL OF MINIMAL PROCESSING OF PEJIBAYE (BACTRIS GASIPAES) COMPARED TO MASCARENES PALMSJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 2010J. JOAS ABSTRACT A palm species native of South America, pejibaye (Bactris gasipaes), was recently introduced in Reunion Island in an attempt to diversify its agriculture. Morphological analyses highlighted the agronomic advantages of pejibaye including a high weight-to-harvest-date ratio compared to three mascarenes palm species. Sensory analyses by a trained panel allowed the elaboration of sensory profiles of the four palms tested. Ranking test done by 120 consumers revealed that pejibaye was preferred to the Mascarenes palms at the 5% level of significance and triangle test showed that Acanthophoenix rubra (red palm), the most cultivated species for the local market, was significantly different from pejibaje at the 1% level. Phenolic profiles revealed that pejibaye differed from the other species by a peak absorbing at 272 nm and weak polyphenol oxidase activities. As no browning reaction was observed in fresh cut pejibaye, this palm could be used for minimal processing (local and export market). PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Sensorial characteristics of fresh hearts of palm are different of those of canned heart of palm, and fresh heart palms are generally preferred by consumers. However, the marketing of fresh palm is limited by the high level of oxidation of most of palm species. The high stability of pejibaye after cutting and its slow rate of oxidation offer the possibility of minimal processing, without special additives. So the packaging in wrapped trays of this palm, cut and stored at low temperature opens up new perspectives, ensuring sensorial quality of a "fresh" product with a shelf life allowing a controlled management of market supply. [source] THE POTENTIAL OF TERMINALIA CATAPPA (TROPICAL ALMOND) SEED AS A SOURCE OF DIETARY PROTEINJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 3 2004C.A. EZEOKONKWO ABSTRACT The nutritional value of Terminalia catappa seed as a source of dietary protein was investigated. The crude protein content of the seed was high (25.81%). The amino acid analysis showed a good pattern of the essential amino acids (EAA) (in g/16 g N) - leucine (7.32), isoleucine (3.58), valine (2.74), phenylalanine (3.04), tryptophan (0.9), methionine (1.48), lysine (3.39), threonine (2.94), histidine (2.96). Tyrosine (2.12) is the limiting amino acid. The protein quality of the seed was evaluated by in vivo bioassays using weanling male Sprague Dawley rats (50,60 g). The indices of protein quality measured include PER, BV, NPU and TD. There were positive correlation between PER and BV (r = 0.7105), PER and body weight gain (r = 0.9157), PER and nitrogen intake (r = 0.7428). The results showed that T. catappa seed protein has a good pattern of the EAA, is highly digestible, can support growth and positive nitrogen balance and thus has a high dietary protein quality. [source] POTENTIAL FOR BACTERIAL GROWTH ON THE FRESH CUT TROPICAL SQUASH, CALABAZA (CURCUBITA MOSCHATA), DURING STORAGEJOURNAL OF FOOD SAFETY, Issue 3 2003REBECCA MONTVILLE ABSTRACT Calabaza (Curcubita moschata) is a tropical squash which is gaining popularity as a specialty crop for agricultural producers in the Northeast United States. It is commonly marketed by being cut in half, wrapped in plastic and may be held unrefrigerated until sold. This method of display is essential for consumer acceptance, yet unrefrigerated storage means that some potential for food safety problems exists. Experiments were conducted to determine the potential for bacterial growth during storage of cut calabaza. Freshly cut calabaza contained between 1.3 and 4.7 log10CFU/g aerobic mesophiles. By 10 h, duplicate counts from some samples exceeded 4 log10 CFU/g. After 24 h of room temperature storage, total aerobic plate counts ranged from 5.2 to 7.7 log10 CFU/g. Rapid bacterial growth on cut calabaza stored at room temperature indicates that these products are highly perishable, and may be able to support the growth of pathogenic bacteria, should they be introduced during the slicing process. [source] HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL OF THE LATE CRETACEOUS GONGILA AND FIKA FORMATIONS, BORNU (CHAD) BASIN, NE NIGERIAJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 4 2010B. Alalade The hydrocarbon potential of possible shale source rocks from the Late Cretaceous Gongila and Fika Formations of the Chad Basin of NE Nigeria is evaluated using an integration of organic geochemistry and palynofacies observations. Total organic carbon (TOC) values for about 170 cutting samples range between 0.5% and 1.5% and Rock-Eval hydrogen indices (HI) are below 100 mgHC/gTOC, suggesting that the shales are organically lean and contain Type III/IV kerogen. Amorphous organic matter (AOM) dominates the kerogen assemblage (typically >80%) although its fluorescence does not show a significant correlation with measured HI. Atomic H/C ratios of a subset of the samples indicate higher quality oil- to gas-prone organic matter (Type II-III kerogens) and exhibit a significant correlation with the fluorescence of AOM (r2= 0.86). Rock-Eval Tmax calibrated against AOM fluorescence, biomarker and aromatic hydrocarbon maturity data suggests a transition from immature (<435°C) to mature (>435°C) in the Fika Formation and mature to post-mature (>470°C) in the Gongila Formation. The low TOC values in most of the shales samples limit their overall source rock potential. The immature to early mature upper part of the Fika Formation, in which about 10% of the samples have TOC values greater than 2.0%, has the best oil generating potential. Oil would have been generated if such intervals had become thermally mature. On the basis of the samples studied here, the basin has potential for mostly gaseous rather than liquid hydrocarbons. [source] VARIATIONS IN COMPOSITION, PETROLEUM POTENTIAL AND KINETICS OF ORDOVICIAN , MIOCENE TYPE I AND TYPE I-II SOURCE ROCKS (OIL SHALES): IMPLICATIONS FOR HYDROCARBON GENERATION CHARACTERISTICSJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2010H. I. Petersen Lacustrine and marine oil shales with Type I and Type I-II kerogen constitute significant petroleum source rocks around the world. Contrary to common belief, such rocks show considerable compositional variability which influences their hydrocarbon generation characteristics. A global set of 23 Ordovician , Miocene freshwater and brackish water lacustrine and marine oil shales has been studied with regard to their organic composition, petroleum potential and generation kinetics. In addition their petroleum generation characteristics have been modelled. The oil shales can be classified as lacosite, torbanite, tasmanite and kukersite. They are thermally immature. Most of the shales contain >10 wt% TOC and the highest sulphur contents are recorded in the brackish water and marine oil shales. The kerogen is sapropelic and is principally composed of a complex of algal-derived organic matter in the form of: (i) telalginite (Botryococcus-, Prasinophyte- (Tasmanites?) or Gloeocapsomorpha-type); (ii) lamalginite (laminated, filamentous or network structure derived from Pediastrum- or Tetraedron-type algae, from dinoflagellate/acritarch cysts or from thin-walled Prasinophyte-type algae); (iii) fluorescing amorphous organic matter (AOM) and (iv) liptodetrinite. High atomic H/C ratios reflect the hydrogen-rich Type I and Type I-II kerogen, and Hydrogen Index values generally >300 mg HC/g TOC and reaching nearly 800 mg HC/g TOC emphasise the oil-prone nature of the oil shales. The kerogen type and source rock quality appear not to be related to age, depositional environment or oil shale type. Therefore, a unique, global activation energy (Ea) distribution and frequency factor (A) for these source rocks cannot be expected. The differences in kerogen composition result in considerable variations in Ea -distributions and A-factors. Generation modelling using custom kinetics and the known subsidence history of the Malay-Cho Thu Basin (Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea), combined with established and hypothetical temperature histories, show that the oil shales decompose at different rates during maturation. At a maximum temperature of ,120°C reached during burial, only limited kerogen conversion has taken place. However, oil shales characterised by broader Ea -distributions with low Ea -values (and a single approximated A-factor) show increased decomposition rates. Where more deeply buried (maximum temperature ,150°C), some of the brackish water and marine oil shales have realised the major part of their generation potential, whereas the freshwater oil shales and other brackish water oil shales are only ,30,40% converted. At still higher temperatures between ,165°C and 180°C all oil shales reach 90% conversion. Most hydrocarbons from these source rocks will be generated within narrow oil windows (,20,80% kerogen conversion). Although the brackish water and marine oil shales appear to decompose faster than the freshwater oil shales, this suggests that with increasing heatflow the influence of kerogen heterogeneity on modelling of hydrocarbon generation declines. It may thus be critical to understand the organic facies of Type I and Type I-II source rocks, particularly in basins with moderate heatflows and restricted burial depths. Measurement of custom kinetics is recommended, if possible, to increase the accuracy of any computed hydrocarbon generation models. [source] RESERVOIR POTENTIAL OF A LACUSTRINE MIXED CARBONATE / SILICICLASTIC GAS RESERVOIR: THE LOWER TRIASSIC ROGENSTEIN IN THE NETHERLANDSJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2008D. Palermo The Lower Triassic Rogenstein Member of the Buntsandstein Formation produces gas at the De Wijk and Wanneperveen fields, NE Netherlands and consists mainly of claystones with intercalated oolitic limestone beds. The excellent reservoir properties of the oolites (,= 20-30%; k = 5-4000 mD) are predominantly controlled by depositional facies. Oolitic limestones are interpreted as the storm and wave deposits of a shallow, desert lake located in the Central European Buntsandstein Basin. The vertical sequence of lithofacies in the Rogenstein Member indicates cyclic changes of relative lake level. The reservoir rock is vertically arranged in a three-fold hierarchy of cycles, recognised both in cores and wireline logs. These cycles are a key to understanding the distribution of reservoir facies, and are used as the basis for a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic correlation of the reservoir units. Slight regional-scale thickness variations of the Rogenstein Member (in the order of tens of metres) are interpreted as the effects of differential subsidence associated with the inherited Palaeozoic structural framework. The depositional basin can be subdivided into subtle palaeo-highs and -lows which controlled facies distribution during Rogenstein deposition. Oolitic limestones show their greatest lateral extent and thickest development in the Middle Rogenstein during large-scale maximum flooding. Potential reservoir rocks (decimetre to metres thick) are present in the NE Netherlands, in particular in the Lauwerszee Trough and the Lower Saxony Basin, where abundant gas shows of 200 - 4000 ppm CH4 have been recorded. Preserved primary porosity is interpreted to be a result of rapid burial in subtle depositional palaeo-lows in this area. The thickest, amalgamated oolite intervals (tens of metres thick) occur in the eastern part of the Central Netherlands Basin. Because of poor reservoir properties, other areas appear to be less promising in terms of Rogenstein exploration potential. [source] NEOGENE TECTONIC HISTORY OF THE SUB-BIBANIC AND M'SILA BASINS, NORTHERN ALGERIA: IMPLICATIONS FOR HYDROCARBON POTENTIALJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 2 2007H. L. Kheidri The southern Bibans region in northern Algeria is located in the external zone of the Tell fold-and-thrust belt. Field observations in this area together with seismic data integrated with previous studies provide evidence for a number of Tertiary deformation phases. Late Eocene Atlassic deformation was followed by Oligocene (?)-Aquitanian-Burdigalian compression, which was associated with the development of a foreland basin in front of a southerly-propagating thrust system. Gravity-driven emplacement of the Tellian nappes over the basin margin probably occurred during the Langhian-Serravallian-Tortonian. The Hodna Mountains structural culmination developed during the Miocene-Pliocene. Analysis of brittle structures points to continued north-south shortening during the Neogene, consistent with convergence between the African and Eurasian Plates. The unconformably underlying Mesozoic-Cenozoic autochthonous sequence in this area contains two potential source rock intervals: Cenomanian-Turonian and Eocene. Reservoir rocks include Lower Cretaceous siliciclastics and Upper Cretaceous to Palaeogene carbonates. Structural style has controlled trap types. Thus traps in the Tell fold-and-thrust belt are associated with folds, whereas structural traps in the Hodna area are associated with reactivated normal faults. In the latter area, there is also some evidence for base-Miocene stratigraphic traps. [source] PETROLEUM POTENTIAL, THERMAL MATURITY AND THE OIL WINDOW OF OIL SHALES AND COALS IN CENOZOIC RIFT BASINS, CENTRAL AND NORTHERN THAILANDJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 4 2006H. I. Petersen Oil shales and coals occur in Cenozoic rift basins in central and northern Thailand. Thermally immature outcrops of these rocks may constitute analogues for source rocks which have generated oil in several of these rift basins. A total of 56 oil shale and coal samples were collected from eight different basins and analysed in detail in this study. The samples were analysed for their content of total organic carbon (TOC) and elemental composition. Source rock quality was determined by Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Reflected light microscopy was used to analyse the organic matter (maceral) composition of the rocks, and the thermal maturity was determined by vitrinite reflectance (VR) measurements. In addition to the 56 samples, VR measurements were carried out in three wells from two oil-producing basins and VR gradients were constructed. Rock-Eval screening data from one of the wells is also presented. The oil shales were deposited in freshwater (to brackish) lakes with a high preservation potential (TOC contents up to 44.18 wt%). They contain abundant lamalginite and principally algal-derived fluorescing amorphous organic matter followed by liptodetrinite and telalginite (Botryococcus-type). Huminite may be present in subordinate amounts. The coals are completely dominated by huminite and were formed in freshwater mires. VR values from 0.38 to 0.47%Ro show that the exposed coals are thermally immature. VR values from the associated oil shales are suppressed by 0.11 to 0.28%Ro. The oil shales have H/C ratios >1.43, and Hydrogen Index (HI) values are generally >400 mg HC/g TOC and may reach 704 mg HC/ gTOC. In general, the coals have H/C ratios between about 0.80 and 0.90, and the HI values vary considerably from approximately 50 to 300 mg HC/gTOC. The HImax of the coals, which represent the true source rock potential, range from ,160 to 310 mg HC/g TOC indicating a potential for oil/gas and oil generation. The steep VR curves from the oil-producing basins reflect high geothermal gradients of ,62°C/km and ,92°C/km. The depth to the top oil window for the oil shales at a VR of ,0.70%Ro is determined to be between ,1100 m and 1800 m depending on the geothermal gradient. The kerogen composition of the oil shales and the high geothermal gradients result in narrow oil windows, possibly spanning only ,300 to 400 m in the warmest basins. The effective oil window of the coals is estimated to start from ,0.82 to 0.98%Ro and burial depths of ,1300 to 1400 m (,92°C/km) and ,2100 to 2300 m (,62°C/km) are necessary for efficient oil expulsion to occur. [source] THE HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL OF LEBANON: NEW INSIGHTS FROM REGIONAL CORRELATIONS AND STUDIES OF JURASSIC DOLOMITIZATIONJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 3 2004F. H. Nader This paper presents an updated review of the petroleum prospects of Lebanon. We briefly describe the known hydrocarbon shows in Lebanon and compare them with adjacent countries, leading to the construction of a model for hydrocarbon migration which takes into account regional facies and reservoir correlations. The oldest exposed rocks in Lebanon are the Jurassic carbonates of the Kesrouane Formation (over 1,000m thick). This formation can be divided into a basal unit dominated by seepage-reflux stratabound dolostones (the Chouane Member,) and an overlying limestone-prone unit (the Nahr Ibrahim Member). A two-stage dolomitisation model for the Jurassic carbonates in Lebanon has recently been proposed by the authors. According to this model, second-stage Late Jurassic hydrothermal dolomitisation is believed to have occurred as a result of the circulation of mixed dolomitising fluids along faults. Hence, the resulting dolostones are fault-controlled and strata-discordant, and may occur at any level within the Kesrouane Formation, locally redolomitising the Chouane Member dolostones and replacing the Nahr Ibrahim Member limestones. In this paper, we discuss the implications of diagenesis (especially dolomitisation) on the petroleum prospects of the Kesrouane Formation in Lebanon. The hydrothermal fault-related dolostones possess porosities of up to 20%, which result from intercrystalline and mouldic porosity enhancement. Porosities in the stratabound reflux dolostones (Early Jurassic) and limestones are much lower. The fact that most of the Jurassic system in onshore Lebanon was affected by meteoric diagenesis during the Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous and the Cenozoic may downgrade hydrocarbon prospectivity. However, offshore areas far from the meteoric realm may have been less (or not at all) affected by meteoric invasion. If effective seals are present there, these areas may host promising Jurassic reservoir units. We also review the prospectivity of unexposed Triassic potential reservoir units in onshore Lebanon (e. g. the "Qartaba" structure). By analogy with the Syrian portion of the Palmyride Basin, Triassic strata here may include both reservoir units and evaporite seals. [source] HYDROCARBON POTENTIAL OF JURASSIC SOURCE ROCKS IN THE JUNGGAR BASIN, NW CHINAJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 3 2003A. N. Ding Jurassic source rocks in the Junggar Basin (NW China) include coal swamp and freshwater lacustrine deposits. Hydrocarbon-generating macerals in the coal swamp deposits are dominated by desmocollinite and exinite of higher-plant origin. In lacustrine facies, macerals consists of bacterially-altered amorphinite, algal- amorphinite, alginite, exinite and vitrinite. Coals and coaly mudstones in the Lower Jurassic Badaowan Formation generate oil at the Qigu oilfield on the southern margin of the basin. Lacustrine source rocks generate oil at the Cainan oilfield in the centre of the basin. The vitrinite reflectance (Ro) of coal swamp deposits ranges from 0.5% to 0.9%, and that of lacustrine source rocks from 0.4% to 1.2%. Biomarker compositions likewise indicate that thermal maturities are variable. These variations cause those with lighter compositions to have matured earlier. Our data indicate that oil and gas generation has occurred at different stages of source-rock maturation, an "early" stage and a "mature" stage. Ro values are 0.4%,0.7% in the former and 0.8%,1.2% in the latter. Büyükutku Lower-middle Miocene limestones in East Anatolia (eastern Turkey) assigned to the Adilcevaz Formation were studied using core and cuttings data from eight wells in the Tertiary Askale and Hinis-Mus-Van sub-basins. Their depositional environment, diagenetic characteristics and reservoir quality are reviewed. The Adilcevaz Formation carbonates are up to 225m thick. Abundant bioclasts are dominated by corals, encrusting red algae, bryozoans, and benthonic and planktonic foraminifera. Reef-core, fore-reef and back-reef facies were recognized. The preservation of primary porosity is generally poor as a result of late calcite cementation. Porosity is mainly present as moulds, vugs and interparticle types, which are best developed in the fore-reef and reef-core facies. However these pores are poorly connected and permeability is generally less than 0.1 mD. In contrast to coeval limestones of similiar facies in Iran, Iraq and other parts of the Middle East, the Adilcevaz Formation has little reservoir potential. [source] A REVIEW OF EOCENE NUMMULITE ACCUMULATIONS: STRUCTURE, FORMATION AND RESERVOIR POTENTIALJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2001A. Racey Eocene nummulite accumulations, also referred to as nummullte "banks", form Important hydrocarbon reservoirs in Tunisia and Libya and may constitute exploration targets in other parts of North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Porosities commonly average 10,20% and permeabilities 10,50md. Foraminifera of the genus Nummulites may comprise up to 98% of the bioclasts in these carbonate reservoirs, although only one or two species may be present. The absence of associated fauna is generally taken to indicate an oligotrophic depositional environment. In this paper, the palaeoecology of the genus Nummulites is discussed together with depositional models for two nummulitic carbonate reservoirs , the Middle Eocene Seeb Limestone of Oman and the Early Eocene El Garia/Jdeir Formation of Tunisia and Libya. The El Garia and Seeb Limestone Formations were deposited in ramp settings, and comprise a series of amalgamated sheets or low-relief banks. In the Hasdrubal field offshore Tunisia, where the El Garia Formation constitutes the reservoir rock, most of the nummulites have been redeposited from shallow into deeper waters whilst in the Bourri field (offshore Libya) they occur as an in situ "bank". Nummulite accumulations often show evidence that both physical reworking (scouring, winnowing and imbrication) and biological processes (reproduction strategies and bioturbation) have influenced their formation. A general model is outlined for discriminating between physically and ecologically produced biofabrics, and the implications for reservoir quality are discussed. [source] CRETACEOUS CARBONATES IN THE ADIYAMAN REGION, SE TURKEY: AN ASSESSMENT OF BURIAL HISTORY AND SOURCE-ROCK POTENTIALJOURNAL OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGY, Issue 1 2000I. H. Demirel The burial history and source-rock potential of Cretaceous carbonates in the Adiyaman region of SE Turkey have been investigated. The carbonates belong to the Aptian-Campanian Mardin Group and the overlying Karabogaz Formation. The stratigraphy of these carbonates at four well locations was recorded. At each well, the carbonate succession was found to be incomplete, and important unconformities were present indicating periods of non-deposition and/or erosion. These unconformities are of variable extent. When combined with the effects of rapid subsidence and sedimentation which took place in the SW of the Adiyaman region during end-Cretaceous foredeep development, they have resulted in variations in the carbonates' present-day burial depths, thereby influencing the regional pattern of source-rock maturation and the timing of oil generation. Burial history curves indicate that the carbonates' maturity increases from SW to NE, towards the Late Cretaceous thrust belt. Predicted levels of maturity for the Mardin Group are consistent with measured geochemical data from three of the wells in the study area (the exception being well Karadag-1). Three potential source-rock intervals of Cretaceous age have been identified. Two of these units , the Derdere and Karababa Formations of the Mardin Group , are composed of shallow-water carbonates which were deposited on the northern margin of the Arabian Platform. The third source-rock unit, the overlying Karabogaz Formation, is composed of pelagic carbonates which were deposited during a regional transgression. These potential source-rock intervals contain marine organic matter dominated by Type II kerogen. Total organic carbon contents range from 0.5 to 2.9 %. Time-temperature analyses indicate that the Mardin Group carbonates are immature to marginally mature at well locations in the SW of the study area, and are mature at western and NE well locations. The onset of oil generation in these Cretaceous source rocks took place between the middle Eocene (48 million yrs ago) and the Oligocene (28 million yrs ago). Today, the Berkeley Pit contains approximately 1200 billion liters of metal laden water with an average pH of 2.7, and 12 grams/liter of dissolved solids. The principle dissolved ions include aluminum, arsenic, calcium, cadmium, copper, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sulfates, and zinc. A species from Division Chrysophyta,Chromulina freiburgensis Dofl. was isolated from this extreme environment. This species has been tested in the laboratory through a series of controlled experiments to determine bioremediative potential. Optimal temperature was determined by monitoring growth with cell counts at temperatures ranging from 5°C to 40°C . The optimal nutrient ratio was determined by varying nitrogen (NaNO3) and phosphorus (Na2HPO4) levels. An experimental matrix varying nutrients was developed to test for bioremediative potential which included: initial and final pH measurements; initial and final Ion Chromatography Pairing,Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) for dissolved metals; and examination of final samples under Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). From these experiments, Chromulina freiburgensis was found to grow optimally in Berkeley Pit surface water with cell densities reaching ten million cells per milliliter at 10°C with additions of 50 mg NaNO3/L and 5 mg Na2HPO4/L. This large biomass was also found to increase diversity and abundance of heterotrophs. At the optimal nutrient level, this species was found to increase pH from 2.21 to 2.47 over 90 days. Significant removal of calcium, iron, nickel, and silica was observed. HEIER Carbonized grains survive for millennia in many archaeological contexts. Their stable structure raises the possibility that they preserve biogenic strontium isotope signatures. This hypothesis was investigated using short-term, laboratory experiments with modern grain immersed in Chalk solution. HCl leaching removed > 95% of secondary alteration from charred grain, and isotope ratios close to the starting value were recovered. This could not be achieved with uncharred grains. HCl leaching of archaeological carbonized grains produced comparable levels of decontamination. Although preliminary, these results suggest that strontium isotope analysis of archaeological carbonized grains from calcareous burial contexts could be used to investigate ancient trade and agriculture. Despite extensive evidence that cascading trophic interactions can underlie community-wide recovery inside no-take marine reserves by protecting high-level predators, the spatial extent of these effects into adjacent fished areas is unknown. I examined the potential for community-wide changes (i.e., the transition from overgrazed coralline barrens to macroalgal beds) in temperate rocky reefs within and around a no-take marine reserve. For this purpose I assessed distribution patterns of predatory fishes, sea urchins, and barrens across the reserve boundaries. Predatory fishes were significantly more abundant within the reserve than in adjacent locations, with moderate spillover across the reserve edges. In contrast, community-wide changes of benthic assemblages were apparent well beyond the reserve boundaries, which is consistent with temporary movements of predatory fishes (e.g., foraging migration) from the reserve to surrounding areas. My results suggest that no-take marine reserves can promote community-wide changes beyond their boundaries. [source] Gazing at the Hand: A Foucaultian View of the Teaching of Manipulative Skills to Introductory Chemistry Students in the United States and the Potential for Transforming Laboratory InstructionCURRICULUM INQUIRY, Issue 3 2005STEPHEN DEMEO ABSTRACT Many studies of chemistry have described the rise of the academic chemical laboratory and laboratory skills in the United States as a result of famous men, important discoveries, and international influences. What is lacking is a perspective of the manifestations of the balances of power and knowledge between teacher and student. A Foucaultian analysis of the teaching of manipulative skills to the introductory student in high school and college in the United States during the later half of the 19th and into the 20th century has provided such a perspective. The analysis focuses on the body, specifically students' hands, and how this body has been redescribed in terms of time, space, activity, and their combinations. It is argued in the first part of this article that the teaching of manipulative skills in the chemistry laboratory can be characterized by effects of differential forms of power and knowledge, such as those provided by Foucault's ideas of hierarchical observation, normalization, and the examination. Moreover, it is evident that disciplinary techniques primarily focused on the physical hands of the student have been recast to include a new cognitive-physiological space in which the teaching of manipulative skills currently takes place. In the second part of this article, the author describes his own professional development as a laboratory instructor through a series of reflective statements that are critiqued from a Foucaultian perspective. The personal narratives are presented in order to pro- vide science educators with an alternative way for their students to think about the relationship between one's manipulative skills and the quality of their data. The pedagogical approach is related to the maturation process of the chemist and contextualized in the current paradigm of laboratory practice, inquiry-based science education. [source] Examining the Potential of Indigenous Institutions for Development: A Perspective from Borana, EthiopiaDEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE, Issue 2 2003Elizabeth E. Watson This article examines an institutional approach to development in which indigenous institutions are viewed as a resource for achieving development. It concentrates on indigenous natural resource management (NRM) institutions which have been seen by some development agencies to be a means to address the needs of people and the environment in a way that is also participatory. Using material from Borana, Ethiopia, the article describes the indigenous NRM institutions and examines the outcome of one attempt to work with them. In the process, it shows that partnerships between development agencies and indigenous NRM institutions are often fragile, and tend to dissolve when they fail to meet the preconceptions of the developers. Through an examination of this approach to development, the article also examines the usefulness of recent broad approaches to institutions. [source] Spatial utilisation of fast-ice by Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli during winterECOGRAPHY, Issue 3 2005Samantha Lake This study describes the distribution of Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli in winter (May,September 1999) at the Vestfold Hills, in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Specifically, we describe the spatial extent of haul-out sites in shore,fast sea-ice, commonly referred to as fast-ice. As winter progressed, and the fast-ice grew thick (ca 2 m), most of the inshore holes closed over, and the seals' distribution became restricted to ocean areas beyond land and islands. Using observations from the end of winter only, we fitted Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) to generate resource selection functions, which are models that yield values proportional to the probability of use. The models showed that seal distribution was defined mainly by distance to ice-edge and distance to land. Distance to ice-bergs was also selected for models of some regions. We present the results as maps of the fitted probability of seal presence, predicted by the binomial GAM for offshore regions, both with and without autocorrelation terms. The maps illustrate the expected distribution encompassing most of the observed distribution. On this basis, we hypothesise that propensity for the fast-ice to crack is the major determinant of Weddell seal distribution in winter. Proximity to open water and pack-ice habitats could also influence the distribution of haul-out sites in fast-ice areas. This is the first quantitative study of Weddell seal distribution in winter. Bradley Abstract The potential for in situ biodegradation of 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) was investigated in three hydrologically distinct streams impacted by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the United States. Microcosms were prepared with sediments from each site and amended with [U-ring- 14C]4- n -nonylphenol (4- n -NP) as a model test substrate. Microcosms prepared with sediment collected upstream of the WWTP outfalls and incubated under oxic conditions showed rapid and complete mineralization of [U-ring- 14C]4-n-NP to 14CO2 in all three systems. In contrast, no mineralization of [U-ring- 14C]4- n -NP was observed in these sediments under anoxic (methanogenic) conditions. The initial linear rate of [U-ring- 14C]4- n -NP mineralization in sediments from upstream and downstream of the respective WWTP outfalls was inversely correlated with the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of the streambed sediments. These results suggest that the net supply of dissolved oxygen to streambed sediments is a key determinant of the rate and extent of 4-NP biodegradation in stream systems. In the stream systems considered by the present study, dissolved oxygen concentrations in the overlying water column (8,10 mg/L) and in the bed sediment pore water (1,3 mg/L at a depth of 10 cm below the sediment,water interface) were consistent with active in situ 4-NP biodegradation. These results suggest WWTP procedures that maximize the delivery of dissolved oxygen while minimizing the release of BOD to stream receptors favor efficient biodegradation of 4-NP contaminants in wastewater-impacted stream environments. Johnson Abstract To study octylphenol biodegradation, samples of river water and sediments were taken from the Aire and Calderr vers in the United Kingdom, running through urban/industrial areas, as well as the Thames River running through a more rural area. Using laboratory microcosms, half-lives of 7 to 50 d were obtained for the water samples, with most curves fitting a zero-order reaction. The Calder River was sampled at four separate points along a 45-km length, encompassing rural to increasingly urban/industrial reaches. Little degradation was observed in the sample from the upland/rural reach, while half-lives of 8 to 13 d were seen in the more urban/industrial reaches. Mineralization of the phenyl ring, detected by evolution of 14CO2 from ring-labeled octylphenol, was only observed in water from the Calder River sample. Degradation rate was similar for a range of concentrations from 0.3 to 100 ,,g/L when tested with river water from the Thames River. No degradation was observed over 83 d when bed sediments were spiked with octylphenol and incubated under anaerobic conditions. [source] Delivering on the Potential of the New CAPEUROCHOICES, Issue 2 2005Mariann Fischer Boel Recent discussions on the CAP have focused on the budget. However, in the public debate the policy itself is often still a caricature of the old CAP that existed until the early 1990s. The CAP has changed fundamentally over the past decade. The recent direction of the CAP , markets and rural development , was set by the European Council in Göteborg and Lisbon. Strong economic performance must go hand in hand with the sustainable use of natural resources. The key elements of the new CAP are a market policy where intervention is a safety net, income stabilisation is delivered through decoupled aids subject to cross-compliance, and a reinforced rural development policy that focuses on jobs, growth and sustainability. We must use the new CAP to unlock the potential for growth, jobs and innovation and put good ideas into practice. We need to work in partnership with farmers, foresters, the agrifood business, NGOs, the population of rural areas, the research community and of course public authorities. But to achieve all of this we need a stable budgetary environment, in which farmers and businesses can plan. In short, we need the resources to deliver on the potential of the new CAP. They were characterized by IR, UV/Vis, and NMR spectroscopy, and by thermogravimetric analysis. Their molecular structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. For the sake of comparison, tricyclohexylphosphonium dithiocarboxylate was also examined. The data acquired were scrutinized to evaluate their usefulness for assessing the steric and electronic properties of NHC ligands. Because of their outstanding ability to crystallize, the five NHC·CS2 betaines were found to be highly suitable for probing the steric influence of nitrogen atom substituents on imidazolylidene-based ligand precursors via XRD analysis, while the corresponding NHC·CO2 adducts were deemed more appropriate for evaluating the ,-donating properties of carbene ligands.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
