Tilting neotectonics of the Guadiamar drainage basin, SW Spain

Abstract The Guadiamar river ,ows from the southern Iberian Massif to the Guadalquivir foreland basin, SW Spain. Its drainage basin displays asymmetries in the stream network, the arrangement of alluvial terraces and the con,guration of the trunk river valley. The stream network asymmetry was studied using morphometric measures of transverse topographic sym-metry, asymmetry factor and drainage basin shape. The alluvial terraces were studied through the lithologic logs of more than a hundred boreholes and ,eld mapping. The morphometric methods demonstrate a regional tectonic tilting toward the SSE, causing both the migration of the Guadiamar river toward the east and the migration of the Guadiamar tributaries toward the southwest. As a consequence of the Guadiamar river migration, an asymmetric valley developed, with a steep eastern margin caused by river dissection, and a gentle western margin where the main alluvial deposits are found. The ages obtained using the 14C analysis of samples from several alluvial deposits show that the river migration, and thus tilting, has occurred during the Holocene as well as earlier in the Quaternary. Optical and physicochemical properties of silica-supported TiO2 photocatalysts

Abstract Commercial applications of photocatalysis in slurry reactors employing titanium dioxide particles present the disadvantage of the additional cost associated with the downstream catalyst separation. In past years a significant effort has been made to develop supported titania photocatalysts on particles of larger size in order to facilitate the sedimentation recovery process. In this work, two different silica materials have been used for preparing immobilized catalysts. Their physicochemical characteristics have been compared with those corresponding to two commercially available unsupported titanium dioxide catalysts. However, for reaction kinetics and reactor design purposes, three additional properties must be known: (i) the spectral specific radiation absorption coefficient, (ii) the spectral specific radiation scattering coefficient, and (iii) the asymmetry factor of a model for the angular distribution of the scattered photons (the phase function). They have been determined with specially designed spectrophotometer transmission, diffuse transmittance, and diffuse reflectance experiments and constitute the most significant addition to this contribution. © 2006 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2006 [source]


Hydrophilic interaction LC of peptides: Columns comparison and clustering

Abstract A wide variety of hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) stationary phase surface chemistries are currently available. Although their selectivity can be considerably different, column comparison or clustering using peptides is limited. In this study, ten pharmaceutically relevant model peptides are analyzed on seven different HILIC columns (bare silica, amide, poly-hydroxyethyl aspartamide, diol and zwitterionic) for the evaluation of their performance and classification. The responses examined include single and multiple responses: plate number, asymmetry factor, LOD, geometric mean resolution, resolution product, time corrected resolution product, peak capacity and chromatographic response function. Column classification was performed using hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis. Moreover, the overall performance quality of the HILIC columns was compared using a linear desirability function. Hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis showed consistent clusters. The zwitterionic phase was clustered apart from the other HILIC columns and both poly-aspartamide columns were clustered together. In addition, the two bare silica phases represent two different clusters, and thus different selectivities. Overall, the responses showed the best performance for one of the bare silica columns (Alltima-Alltech), followed by the zwitterionic phase (ZIC)-HILIC. Thus, these columns, belonging to different clusters, were found to be the best performing systems in pharmaceutical peptide analysis for the selected peptide set. [source]


Personality traits and endocrine response as possible asymmetry factors of agonistic outcome in karate athletes

Abstract Individual variations of plasma levels of hormones testosterone (T) and cortisol (C), before (pre) and after (post) Kumite (real fight) and Kata (ritualized fight) were measured in male karate athletes and analyzed in relation with the agonistic outcome (i.e. winning or losing the fight) and personality trait measures. T and C increased only during Kumite contest and pre- and post-competition C levels were higher in losers than winners. Losers showed higher levels of harm avoidance and anxiety as well as lower level of novelty seeking than winners. Importantly, novelty seeking negatively correlates with pre C and the higher the level of risk assessment, emotionality and insecurity indexes the higher the pre C level. In conclusion, personality traits might be an important factor asymmetry between athletes influencing both the probability of winning or losing an agonistic interaction and the different anticipatory endocrine response to the incipient fight. Effect of chemically bonded stationary phases and mobile phase composition on , -blockers retention in RP-HPLC

Abstract The effects of stationary and mobile phase on retention of 18 , -adrenolytic drugs (, -blockers) have been studied. Four ,deactivated surface' stationary phases (polar-embedded or end-capped) were examined. Special attention was drawn to the cholesterolic (SG-CHOL) and alkylamide (SG-AP) stationary phases, and their application for analysis of the compounds. The retention of analyzed substances was also examined in terms of mobile phase composition. Sixteen different configurations of mobile phases were prepared, all based on methanol and acetonitrile with ammonium acetate and ammonium formate. The difference in retention between ammonium formate and acetate water solutions, and peak shape changes related to the addition of triethylamine (TEA), were investigated. Principal component analysis was used to find the similarities between stationary phases. Polar-embedded phases synthesized on the same sorbent possess very similar properties. All phases based on silica gel compared with the monolithic column also showed similarities in retention of , -blockers. The addition of TEA to the mobile phase did not influence strongly the retention, and analysis of asymmetry factors showed only a little peak broadening for a few compounds on the monolithic column.
