HARDING Abstract Surveys for lobster larvae in offshore waters of the north-eastern Gulf of Maine in 1983, 1987 and 1989 confirm that local hatching occurs mainly at depths <100 m over the banks, including Georges and Browns Banks. Detailed studies in the vicinity of Georges Bank in late July of both 1987 and 1989 indicate that the first and second moult stages were located primarily over the bank whereas stages III and IV lobster were collected both over and off the bank. At times stage IV lobster were more abundant off the bank than over it. The condition of stage III and IV lobster, as measured by a lipid index, was better off than over Georges Bank in 1988 and 1989 indicating a possible physiological advantage to being off the bank. In addition, the higher surface temperatures off Georges Bank would shorten larval development time to settlement. To determine the probable hatch sites of stage IV lobster collected off of Browns Bank in 1983 and off of Georges in 1987 and 1989, a 3-D circulation model of the Gulf of Maine was used to simulate larval lobster drift backwards in time. In all cases, areas off Cape Cod, MA, and off Penobscot Bay, ME were suggested as the source of the larvae, although most of the larval trajectories never reached these near-shore waters that are well-known, larval hatching areas. The model-projected larval release times match most closely the observed inshore hatch off Massachusetts but model uncertainties mean that coastal Maine cannot be ruled out as a source. Georges Bank is also a potential source because the present model does not take into account short-term wind events, off-bank eddy transport or the possibility of directed off-bank larval swimming. Examination of weather records prior to and during our 1988 and 1989 sampling periods indicates that winds were not of sufficient intensity and duration to induce larval transport off Georges Bank. The shedding of eddies from the northern flank of Georges Bank into the Gulf of Maine are a relatively common phenomenon during summer but not enough is known about them to evaluate their contribution to possible cross-bank transport of lobster larvae. Directed larval swimming is another possible source for the stage IV lobster found near Georges Bank. Plankton distributions across the northern frontal zone of Georges Bank in 1988 were used as proxies for the scarce larval lobsters. The more surface distribution of the microplankton, in particular, supports the possibility that wind and eddy events may be important in the transport of stage III and IV lobsters off of Georges Bank. Further studies are needed to evaluate these possible additional sources of advanced stage lobster larvae found off of the offshore banks. HALSEY Summary 1We use a large interspecific data set on diving variables for birds and mammals, and statistical techniques to control for the effects of phylogenetic non-independence, to assess evolutionary associations among different elements of diving behaviour across a broad and diverse range of diving species. Our aim is to assess whether the diving ability of homeothermic vertebrates is influenced by factors other than the physiology of the species. 2Body mass is related to dive duration even when dive depth is controlled for and thus for a given dive depth, larger species dive for longer. This implies that larger species have a greater capacity for diving than is expressed in their dive depth. Larger animals that dive shallowly, probably for ecological reasons such as water depth, make use of the physiological advantage that their size confers by diving for longer. 3Dive duration correlates with dive depth more strongly than with body mass. This confirms that some animals are poor divers for their body mass, either because of a lower physiological capacity or because their behaviour limits their diving. 4Surface duration relates not only to dive duration but also to dive depth, as well as to both independently. This indicates a relationship between dive depth and surface duration controlling for dive duration, which suggests that deeper dives are energetically more expensive than shallow dives of the same duration. 5Taxonomic class does not improve any of the dive variable models in the present study. There is thus an unsuspected consistency in the broad responses of different groups to the effects on diving of the environment, which are therefore general features of diving evolution. [source] IS THERE AN ECOPHYSIOLOGICAL EXPLANATION FOR THE GAMETOPHYTE,TETRASPOROPHYTE RATIO IN GELIDIUM SESQUIPEDALE (RHODOPHYTA)?,JOURNAL OF PHYCOLOGY, Issue 2 2006Raquel Carmona In the fall, when 61% of the fronds of the Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Born. et Thur. population located in Albufeira (southern Portugal) were reproductive, about 90% of these fronds were tetrasporophytes, whereas an equal percentage of female and male gametophytes was found (5%). The comparison of physiological performances of the reproductive phases (males, females and tetrasporophytes) did not reveal a physiological advantage of tetrasporic fronds. There were no significant differences either in the photosynthesis, nitrogen uptake, nitrate reductase activity, or biochemical composition of adult fronds. On the other hand, vegetative recruitment and spore production in the laboratory were significantly different. The re-attachment to calcareous substrate and the subsequent rhizoidal growth were faster in tetrasporophytes. Particular levels of temperature, rather than irradiance, had an important effect on the phase differences in the spore release, attachment, and germination rates. Significant results were the higher release of carpospores at all irradiances at 17°C, and the higher attachment percentage of carpospores at 13°C versus tetraspores. Under higher temperatures (21°C), tetraspores showed higher attachment rates while carpospores germinated more. G. sesquipedale cystocarps released carpospores for 2 months, while tetrasporangia stopped shedding tetraspores after 1 month, resulting in a 3-fold higher production of carpospores than tetraspores. Results showed that vegetative and spore recruitment may explain the low gametophyte,tetrasporophyte ratio of the studied population of G. sesquipedale as opposed to the physiological performance of phases. Sen Abstract According to their relevant roles in the regulation and availability of extracellular levels of purinergic signals, the nucleoside transporter and the nucleotide vesicular transporter are subject to acute regulation. The plasma membrane nucleoside transporter has been shown to exhibit several regulatory mechanisms, such as regulation by long-term signals, phosphorylation/dephosphorylation processes, and allosteric modulation. The present work reviews studies concerning allosteric modulation of nucleoside and nucleotide vesicular transporters, as the first reported examples of mnemonic behavior in transporter proteins, presenting kinetic and allosteric cooperativity. This fact implies that the protein can exhibit different conformations, each one with specific kinetic parameters. Transport substrates are able to induce slow conformational changes between the different forms of the transporter. This kinetic mechanism can provide several physiological advantages, since it allows strict control of transport capacity by changes in substrate concentrations. This allosteric modulation has been confirmed in several experimental models, the nucleoside transporter in chromaffin and endothelial cells from adrenal medulla and the nucleotide vesicular transporter in the chromaffin cell granules and rat brain synaptic vesicles. Alexiou Summary For several years, there has been an increasing awareness of the fundamental role that the complex bacterial ecosystem plays in our health. Inulin and oligofructose are prebiotic dietary fibres naturally present in the chicory root. They escape metabolism in the small intestine, and their selective fermentation by the human colonic microflora leads to a shift in the composition of the indigenous bacterial ecosystem, in favour of health-promoting bifidobacteria. In addition to their dietary fibre effects on improved bowel regularity, several physiological advantages are linked to their specific pattern of fermentation in the colon, including improved mineral absorption, enhanced natural host defences and colonic protection, improved gut health, and beneficial influence on appetite regulation. The aim of the present review was to highlight the nutritional benefits of inulin-type fructans, focusing on key physiological functions. [source] |
