Selected AbstractsPerformance optimization of object comparisonINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, Issue 10 2009Axel Hallez Comparing objects can be considered as a hierarchical process. Separate aspects of objects are compared to each other, and the results of these comparisons are combined into a single result in one or more steps by aggregation operators. The set of operators used to compare the objects and the way these operators are related with each other is called the comparison scheme. If a threshold is applied to the final result of the object comparison, the mathematical properties of the operators in the comparison scheme can be used to derive thresholds on the intermediate results. These derived threshold can be used to break of a comparison early, thus offering a reduction of the comparison cost. Using this information, we show that the order in which the operators are evaluated has an influence on the average cost of comparing two objects. Next, we proceed with a study of the properties that allow us to find an optimal order, such that this average cost is minimized. Finally, we provide an algorithm that calculates an optimal order efficiently. Although specifically developed for object comparison, the algorithm can be applied to all kinds of selection processes that involve the combination of several test results. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] Elastic and inelastic drift performance optimization for reinforced concrete buildings under earthquake loadsEARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 8 2004Chun-Man Chan Abstract This paper presents an effective optimization technique for the elastic and inelastic drift performance design of reinforced concrete buildings under response spectrum loading and pushover loading. Attempts have been made to develop an automatic optimal elastic and inelastic drift design of concrete framework structures. The entire optimization procedure can be divided into elastic design optimization and inelastic design optimization. Using the principle of virtual work, the elastic drift response generated by the response spectrum loading and the inelastic drift response produced by the non-linear pushover loading can be explicitly expressed in terms of element sizing design variables. The optimization methodology for the solution of the explicit design problem of buildings is fundamentally based on the Optimality Criteria approach. One ten-story, two-bay building frame example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed optimal design method. While rapid convergence in a few design cycles is found in the elastic optimization process, relatively slow but steady and smooth convergence of the optimal performance-based design is found in the inelastic optimization process. [source] Towards predictive modelling of the electrophysiology of the heartEXPERIMENTAL PHYSIOLOGY, Issue 5 2009Edward Vigmond The simulation of cardiac electrical function is an example of a successful integrative multiscale modelling approach that is directly relevant to human disease. Today we stand at the threshold of a new era, in which anatomically detailed, tomographically reconstructed models are being developed that integrate from the ion channel to the electromechanical interactions in the intact heart. Such models hold high promise for interpretation of clinical and physiological measurements, for improving the basic understanding of the mechanisms of dysfunction in disease, such as arrhythmias, myocardial ischaemia and heart failure, and for the development and performance optimization of medical devices. The goal of this article is to present an overview of current state-of-art advances towards predictive computational modelling of the heart as developed recently by the authors of this article. We first outline the methodology for constructing electrophysiological models of the heart. We then provide three examples that demonstrate the use of these models, focusing specifically on the mechanisms for arrhythmogenesis and defibrillation in the heart. These include: (1) uncovering the role of ventricular structure in defibrillation; (2) examining the contribution of Purkinje fibres to the failure of the shock; and (3) using magnetic resonance imaging reconstructed heart models to investigate the re-entrant circuits formed in the presence of an infarct scar. [source] An Efficient Way to Assemble ZnS Nanobelts as Ultraviolet-Light Sensors with Enhanced Photocurrent and StabilityADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 3 2010Xiaosheng Fang Abstract Although there has been significant progress in the fabrication and performance optimization of one-dimensional nanostructure-based photodetectors, it is still a challenge to develop an effective and low-cost device with high performance characteristics, such as a high photocurrent/dark-current ratio, photocurrent stability, and fast time response. Herein an efficient and low-cost method to achieve high-performance ,visible-blind' microscale ZnS nanobelt-based ultraviolet (UV)-light sensors without using a lithography technique, by increasing the nanobelt surface areas exposed to light, is reported. The devices exhibit about 750 times enhancement of a photocurrent compared with individual nanobelt-based sensors and an ultrafast time response. The photocurrent stability and time response to UV-light do not change significantly when a channel distance is altered from 2 to 100,µm or the sensor environment changes from air to vacuum and different measurement temperatures (60 and 150,°C). The photoelectrical behaviors can be recovered well after returning the measurement conditions to air and room temperature again. The low cost and high performance of the resultant ZnS nanobelt photodetectors guarantee their highest potential for visible-blind UV-light sensors working in the UV-A band. [source] Intelligent structure design of membrane cathode assembly for direct methanol fuel cellINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 12 2005K. Furukawa Abstract The performance and the structural model of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) have been developed and experimentally verified with fundamental calculations of the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The model provides information concerning the influence of the operating and structural parameters. The composition and performance optimization of MEA structure in DMFC has been investigated by including both electrochemical reaction and mass transport process. In the experimentation, the effect of Nafion content and loading method in the catalyst layer of cathode for DMFC was investigated. For the spray method electrode (SME), the cell performance and cathode performance using a dynamic hydrogen electrode (DHE) as a reference electrode was improved in comparison with those of the PME electrode by decreasing cathode potential. From ac impedance measurements of the cathode, the adsorption resistance of the SME electrode was decreased compared with that of the PME electrode. The higher cell performance was mostly dependent on the adsorption resistance. In the modelling, the cathode overpotential was decreased with increasing ionomer content, due to increasing ionic conductivity for proton transfer and the larger reaction site. The resistance to oxygen transport was increased at the same time, and became dominant at higher ionomer loadings, leading to an increase in the voltage loss. The ratio of ionomer to void space in the cathode affected the cathode polarization, which had the lowest resistance of oxygen diffusion at the ratio of 0.1,0.2.
