A Qualitative Study on the Perceived Consequences of Poverty: Introducing Consequential Attributions as a Missing Link in Lay Thinking on Poverty

APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 3 2009
Ellen Loix
In order to learn more about lay thinking on perceived consequences of poverty, a qualitative study was conducted using a combination of focus group interviews and in-depth interviews (n = 61). The transcribed focus group and in-depth interviews were then analysed. The results showed that lay people construct cognitive schemes about the consequences of poverty that are comparable to attributions about poverty. Accordingly, it is concluded that theorising on consequential attributions is a missing link in previous research on lay thinking about poverty. Posttraumatic stress disorder and the perceived consequences of seeking therapy among U.S. Army special forces operators exposed to combat

JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES IN ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE, Issue 1 2010
Jessica M. Espinoza Psy.D.
The goal of this study was to ascertain the level of PTSD symptoms experienced by Special Forces Operators (SFOs) who have been exposed to combat and compare these rates to the PTSD rates of the general U.S. population and general military population. A secondary goal was to discover whether SFOs were aware that therapy was available to them through the U.S. Army and, if so, whether they would seek this therapy for PTSD. The last goal was to discover whether SFOs who chose not to seek therapy while still serving did so because they feared negative consequences. Data were collected from 68 SFOs who had been exposed to combat. Results indicated that SFOs are experiencing symptoms of PTSD at a rate that is higher than that of the general U.S. population and somewhat lower than that of the general military population. Also, results indicated that a large percentage of the sample would not seek treatment for PTSD due to perceived negative consequences. [source]

Prediction of intern attendance at a seminar-based training programme: a behavioural intention model

MEDICAL EDUCATION, Issue 7 2000
Rob J Boots
Context The factors determining intern attendance at ,resident rounds' training programmes are not known. Aims This study aimed to use a behavioural model (the Triandis theory of social behaviour) to predict intern attendance at the resident round programme at a metropolitan teaching hospital. Subjects These included 109 interns in a large metropolitan teaching hospital, in the 1996 and 1997 cohorts. Methods Tabulated responses from a structured interview administered to 10 randomly selected interns were used to develop survey items related to the Triandis variables. Attendance was monitored using a sessional logbook and by self-report. Item analysis was conducted for each variable scale. Stepwise multiple regression models were constructed to predict attendance and intention. Results The average proportion of resident rounds attended was 43% (95% confidence intervals (CI) 40,47%) from logbook attendance, and 63% (95% CI 61,65%) by self-report. Cronbach's alpha for the subscales ranged from 0·62 to 0·91. Intern attendance was predicted by the habit of attendance and negatively predicted by facilitating conditions (AdjR2=0·26, P < 0·0001). The intention to attend was only independently predicted by perceived consequences (AdjR2= 0·19, P < 0·0001). Conclusions The establishment of resident education programmes within teaching hospitals requires attention to and modification of facilitating conditions that may allow improvements in attendance and in quality of the programme.
