A comparison of the host-searching efficiency of two larval parasitoids of Plutella xylostella

Summary 1. A host specialist parasitoid is thought to have greater efficiency in locating hosts or greater ability to overcome host defence than a generalist species. This leads to the prediction that a specialist should locate and parasitise more hosts than a generalist in a given arena. The work reported here tested these predictions by comparing the host-searching behaviour of Diadegma semiclausum (a specialist) and Cotesia plutellae (an oligophagous species), two parasitoids of larval Plutella xylostella. 2. Both parasitoids employed antennal search and ovipositor search when seeking hosts but D. semiclausum also seemed to use visual perception in the immediate vicinity of hosts. 3. Larvae of P. xylostella avoided detection by parasitoids by moving away from damaged plant parts after short feeding bouts. When they encountered parasitoids, the larvae wriggled vigorously as they retreated and often hung from silk threads after dropping from a plant. 4. These two parasitoids differed in their responses to host defences. Diadegma semiclausum displayed a wide-area search around feeding damage and waited near the silk thread for a suspended host to climb up to the leaf, then attacked it again. Cotesia plutellae displayed an area-restricted search and usually pursued the host down the silk thread onto the ground. 5. Diadegma semiclausum showed a relatively fixed behavioural pattern leading to oviposition but C. plutellae exhibited a more plastic behavioural pattern. 6. The time spent by the two parasitoids on different plants increased with increasing host density, but the time spent either on all plants or a single plant by D. semiclausum was longer than that of C. plutellae. Diadegma semiclausum visited individual plants more frequently than C. plutellae before it left the patch, and stung hosts at more than twice the rate of C. plutellae. 7. The results indicated that the host-location strategies employed by D. semiclausum were adapted better to the host's defensive behaviour, and thus it was more effective at detecting and parasitising the host than was C. plutellae. Content and distribution of arsenic in soils, sediments and groundwater environments of the southern Pampa region, Argentina

Abstract The health of a large rural population in the southern Pampa (Argentina) is at risk owing to newly detected areas where As-groundwater exceeds 0.01 mg/L standard (WHO (1995) Guidelines for drinking water quality, 2nd edition. pp 43,45). Currently, devitrification of volcanic glass is invoked to interpret the origin of arsenic in the aquifers hosted in a sequence of pampean loess (Plio-Pleistocene) juxtaposed with postpampean loess (Holocene). Our data suggest that arsenic is not specifically associated with volcanic glass and that other minerals contribute to As-release into groundwater. The goals were (1) to understand As-groundwater spatial variability, (2) to explore soils/sediments/water relationships and to identify the probable As-provenance. Comparable As concentrations of the light and the heavy sand fractions suggest that though detrital glass is a major light constituent, other existing primary minerals are As-bearers that contribute to As-release into groundwater. Grouping of materials according to their As-content indicated spatial variability in the sedimentary distribution pattern leading to differences in the frequencies of occurrence of As-bearing minerals. Phreatic waters were Ca + Mg bicarbonate and devoid of As in the intake areas (Ventania System) and Na-carbonate but As-rich towards the discharge (Atlantic coast and local depressions). As-groundwater reflects a patchy distribution within the pampean landscape. A correspondence between As-high groundwater, EC >1 dSm, CO3H,, alkaline pH and a longer water residence time do exist triggering As extraction from the loess sand fraction and desorption from charged fine particles which lead to As-toxicity towards groundwater discharge. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simulating climate change impacts on fire frequency and vegetation dynamics in a Mediterranean-type ecosystem

Abstract The impacts of climate change on Mediterranean-type ecosystems may result from complex interactions between direct effects on water stress and subsequent modifications in flammability and fire regime leading to changes in standing biomass and plant species composition. We analysed these interrelations through a simulation approach combining scenarios of climate change developed from GCM results and a multispecies functional model for vegetation dynamics, SIERRA. A fire risk procedure based on weekly estimates of vegetation water stress has been implemented. Using climate data from 1960 to 1997, simulations of a typical maquis woodland community have been performed as baseline and compared with two climate scenarios: a change in the rainfall regime alone, and changes in both rainfall and air temperature. Climate changes are defined by an increase in temperature, particularly in summer, and a change in the rainfall pattern leading to a decrease in low rainfall events, and an increase in intense rainfall events. The results illustrate the lack of drastic changes in the succession process, but highlight modifications in the water budget and in the length of the drought periods. Water stress lower than expected regarding statistics on the current climate is simulated, emphasizing a long-term new equilibrium of vegetation to summer drought but with a higher sensibility to rare events. Regarding fire frequency, climate changes tend to decrease the time interval between two successive fires from 20 to 16 years for the maquis shrubland and from 72 to 62 years in the forested stages. This increase in fire frequency leads to shrub-dominated landscapes, which accentuates the yield of water by additional deep drainage and runoff. [source]


Lumbar ontogenetic growth and sexual dimorphism in modern humans

To detect and differentiate between possible heterochronic processes in the ontogenetic growth pattern of the human lumbar region, in relationship with sexual dimorphism. We measured the growth trajectories of average length and width, length/width ratio, posterior projected surface area, and bone mineral density using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, in a sample group of 1718 modern humans. These growth patterns were analyzed using the Gompertz model. In adult lumbar region, only surface area and width were significantly higher in men. Regarding the ontogenetic growth pattern leading to the dimorphic states, all values obtained for women were significantly higher than those obtained for men. Maximum initial growth rates occurred for surface area and density in women. Width scaled faster than length in both sexes. The lumbar region followed patterns similar to those of other skeletal elements when compared with a previous classification of growth patterns in the human skeleton; however, in this study, the growth rate was slower. With regard to the effect of dimorphism, sexual differences in growth rate accounted for only a small proportion of the variation in lumbar length, mineral density, and surface area. Nevertheless, these sexual differences played an important role in the increase of the length/width ratio, which was reflected in the ages at which sexual dimorphism developed. The sexual dimorphism found in the lumbar region of human adults is not caused by any heterochronic process.
