Devault Abstract The use of passive samplers for the assessment of organic contaminants has been extended to solid matrixes for the past decade. Passive sampling is usually applied to sediment in laboratory experiments involving significant upheaval, whereas in-situ experiments remain rare. In this study, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) strips were deployed within the sediments of a small river contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). LDPE strips were deployed in the 3-cm depth sediment layer. Over a period of 36 days, LDPE strips were regularly retrieved and accumulated PAHs in LDPE were extracted and analyzed. Accumulations of hydrophobic contaminants in LDPE directly exposed in the sediment were observed. Accumulations in LDPE were observed for moderately hydrophobic PAHs with the highest concentrations in the sediment. Low accumulations were observed for more hydrophobic compounds, despite their presence in high concentrations in the sediment. This was explained by very low exchange rates and competitive interactions with particles in the sediment. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environ Toxicol, 2010. [source] Distributions of forest birds and butterflies in the Andaman islands, Bay of Bengal: nested patterns and processesECOGRAPHY, Issue 1 2002Priya Davidar The distributional patterns of forest birds and butterflies in the Andaman islands, an oceanic chain located off SE Asia, were tested for nestedness. Both taxa were highly nested. Nestedness could be due to colonization or extinction processes, area or distance effects or nestedness of habitats. Nestedness in forest bird distributions were strongly influenced by area and habitat related factors. Habitats were significantly nested in all three island groups, however most strongly for the North Andamans. However forest bird distributions in the North Andamans, as indicated by row order in the packed matrix, was not correlated with habitat diversity, suggesting that habitat related factors alone cannot account for these patterns. Other causal influences could be passive sampling, where common and abundant species and habitats are more likely to have a widespread distribution than rare species and habitats. The nested subset pattern seen in two unrelated taxa suggests that the Andamans are extinction dominated and that the protection of forests on large islands is critical for the conservation of its biodiversity. The species,area relationship is considered amongst the few genuine laws in ecology. Although positive species richness,stone area relationships have been found previously in stream systems, very few studies have simultaneously examined species,individuals, individuals,area, species,bryophyte biomass and individuals,bryophyte biomass relationships. We examined these relationships based on temporally replicated assessments of macroinvertebrates on stones at two river sites. 2. We found only one significant species,area relationship out of six relationship tested, and two significant individuals,area relationships. Even these significant relationships were weak, however. By contrast, we detected significant and rather strong relationships between species richness and the number of individuals at both river sites on all three sampling dates. We also found significant relationships of both species richness and the number of individuals with bryophyte biomass at both river sites on all sampling occasions. One of the river sites was disturbed by a bulldozer, and the species,bryophyte biomass relationships were somewhat stronger after the disturbance event. 3. Our findings are quite surprising, given that there were very weak species,area relationships on stream stones. By contrast, our results suggest a pivotal role for bryophyte biomass in determining the species richness and the number of individuals of stream macroinvertebrates at this small scale. The most probably origin of these relationships begins with bryophyte cover, which determines the number of individuals, and subsequently passively affects species richness. Thus, there is not necessarily a direct mechanism that determines the variability of species richness on stream stones. 4. Experimental studies are needed to disentangle the various mechanisms (e.g. passive sampling, provision of more food, more niche space, flood disturbance refugia) by which bryophyte biomass affects stream macroinvertebrates.
