Terms modified by Partition Selected Abstracts3D Architecture and Load Partition in Eutectic Al-Si Alloys,ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS, Issue 12 2009Guillermo Requena Abstract The changes of the three dimensional architecture of a eutectic AlSi12 alloy during heat treatment are revealed by means of synchrotron holotomography. The non-destructive nature of the holotomography technique allows to analyze the same volumes in different thermal conditions. The results show a disintegration of the interconnected eutectic Si-lamellae into isolated elongated particles. The load carrying capacity of both types of Si morphologies is studied by in situ neutron diffraction during compression tests. The experimental results are compared to those obtained using a micromechanical model developed for metal matrix composites based on a homogenization approach. The correlation between experiments and calculations shows that the interconnectivity of Si must be considered to account for the strength exhibited by the eutectic alloy. The present study bridges the gap between the already available two-dimensional studies of architecture and properties of the binary AlSi12 alloy and new three-dimensional studies of more complex systems based on this alloy. [source] Partition of distinct chromosomal regions: negotiable border and fixed borderGENES TO CELLS, Issue 6 2004Akatsuki Kimura Chromosomes are partitioned into distinct functional regions. For example, heterochromatin regions consist of condensed chromatin and contain few transcriptionally active genes, whereas euchromatin regions are less condensed and majority of active genes reside in the euchromatin regions. Because distinct regions reside in each chromosome, borders are accordingly established between these regions. A prevailing view of the borders is that they are ,walls' that actively inhibit communication between distinct regions on chromosomes. Although little is known about the molecular bases of these walls, specific DNA elements are considered to recruit these walls to define the positions of the borders. We call the borders established with this mechanism as ,fixed borders'. Past studies have identified various insulators (boundary DNA elements) that have been suggested to recruit fixed borders to them. Another mechanism, which we introduce and focus on in this review, does not require walls recruited by specific DNA elements at the chromosomal borders. Instead, the borders are defined by a balance of opposing enzymatic activities located at the opposite sides of the resultant borders. We name these borders ,negotiable borders'. Here we review some of the recent progress in the field that offer valuable insight into mechanisms of establishing structural and functional borders on chromosomes. [source] Temperature Responsive Solution Partition of Organic,Inorganic Hybrid Poly(N -isopropylacrylamide)-Coated Mesoporous Silica Nanospheres,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 9 2008Po-Wen Chung Abstract A series of poly(N -isopropylacrylamide)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticle materials (PNiPAm-MSNs) has been synthesized by a surface-initiated living radical polymerization with a reversible addition,fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) reaction. The structure and the degree of polymerization of the PNiPAm-MSNs has been characterized by a variety of techniques, including nitrogen sorption analysis, 29Si and 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermally induced changes of the surface properties of these polymer-coated core,shell nanoparticles have been determined by examining their partition activities in a biphasic solution (water/toluene) at different temperatures. [source] P-wave and S-wave decomposition in boundary integral equation for plane elastodynamic problemsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, Issue 12 2003Emmanuel Perrey-Debain Abstract The method of plane wave basis functions, a subset of the method of Partition of Unity, has previously been applied successfully to finite element and boundary element models for the Helmholtz equation. In this paper we describe the extension of the method to problems of scattering of elastic waves. This problem is more complicated for two reasons. First, the governing equation is now a vector equation and second multiple wave speeds are present, for any given frequency. The formulation has therefore a number of novel features. A full development of the necessary theory is given. Results are presented for some classical problems in the scattering of elastic waves. They demonstrate the same features as those previously obtained for the Helmholtz equation, namely that for a given level of error far fewer degrees of freedom are required in the system matrix. The use of the plane wave basis promises to yield a considerable increase in efficiency over conventional boundary element formulations in elastodynamics. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Partition of unity enrichment for bimaterial interface cracksINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR NUMERICAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING, Issue 8 2004N. Sukumar Abstract Partition of unity enrichment techniques are developed for bimaterial interface cracks. A discontinuous function and the two-dimensional near-tip asymptotic displacement functions are added to the finite element approximation using the framework of partition of unity. This enables the domain to be modelled by finite elements without explicitly meshing the crack surfaces. The crack-tip enrichment functions are chosen as those that span the asymptotic displacement fields for an interfacial crack. The concept of partition of unity facilitates the incorporation of the oscillatory nature of the singularity within a conforming finite element approximation. The mixed-mode (complex) stress intensity factors for bimaterial interfacial cracks are numerically evaluated using the domain form of the interaction integral. [source] Partition-based algorithm for estimating transportation network reliability with dependent link failuresJOURNAL OF ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION, Issue 3 2008Agachai Sumalee Evaluating the reliability of a transportation network often involves an intensive simulation exercise to randomly generate and evaluate different possible network states. This paper proposes an algorithm to approximate the network reliability which minimizes the use of such simulation procedure. The algorithm will dissect and classify the network states into reliable, unreliable, and un-determined partitions. By postulating the monotone property of the reliability function, each reliable and/or unreliable state can be used to determine a number of other reliable and/or unreliable states without evaluating all of them with an equilibrium assignment procedure. The paper also proposes the cause-based failure framework for representing dependent link degradation probabilities. The algorithm and framework proposed are tested with a medium size test network to illustrate the performance of the algorithm. [source] Partition of metals in the Vistula River and in effluents from sewage treatment plants in the region of Cracow (Poland)LAKES & RESERVOIRS: RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT, Issue 2 2000C. Guéguen Abstract The Vistula River suffers from heavy pollution with multiple origins. In the upper reaches, metallic and chlorine pollution originates from the mining and industrial region of Upper Silesia. Downstream from Upper Silesia, urban and industrial sewage adds more metallic and organic contaminants from the large urban agglomeration of Cracow. Although the river status is monitored routinely, little is known about the partition of metals between particulate and dissolved forms. This study focuses on metal partitioning and on the impact of the two main wastewater treatment plants at Cracow on metal concentrations in the Vistula River. The Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn content was measured in both dissolved and particulate fractions. High metal concentrations in the Vistula River persist, although current levels seem to be lower than those in the past. Metal concentrations in the Vistula River and effluents from the sewage treatment plants at Cracow are similar, indicating a relatively minor contribution from the treated sewage. However, untreated sewage may be a significant source of contaminants. Despite high anthropogenic metal concentrations, the metal partitioning coefficients (Kd) in the Vistula are similar to these found in unpolluted rivers. Within a narrow pH range, Kd values depend on the metal affinity to particles, but there is no evidence of dependence on particle or chloride concentrations. An important fraction of the toxic metals Pb and Cd is associated with particles, which may decrease their immediate availability to the biota of the river. The mechanisms underlying this destabilization are unknown. We have found that destabilization by the F plasmid partition protein, SopB, of plasmids carrying the F centromere, sopC, results from the capacity of the SopB,sopC partition complex to stimulate plasmid multimerization. Mutant SopBs unable to destabilize failed to increase multimerization. Stability of wild-type mini-F, whose ResD/rfsF site-specific recombination system enables it to resolve multimers to monomers, was barely affected by excess SopB. Destabilization of plasmids lacking the rfsF site was suppressed by recF, recO and recR, but not by recB, mutant alleles, indicating that multimerization is initiated from single-strand gaps. SopB did not alter the amounts or distribution of replication intermediates, implying that SopB,DNA complexes do not create single-strand gaps by blocking replication forks. Rather, the results are consistent with SopB,DNA complexes channelling gapped molecules into the RecFOR recombination pathway. We suggest that extended SopB,DNA complexes increase the likelihood of recombination between sibling plasmids by keeping them in close contact prior to SopA-mediated segregation. These results cast plasmid site-specific resolution in a new role , compensation for untoward consequences of partition complex formation. [source] Exciplex-type Behavior and Partition of 3-Substituted Indole Derivatives in Reverse Micelles Made with Benzylhexadecyldimethylammonium Chloride, Water and Benzene,PHOTOCHEMISTRY & PHOTOBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Claudio D. Borsarelli ABSTRACT The fluorescence properties of 3-methylindole (MI), 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA), 3-indoleethyltrimethylammonium bromide (IETA), l -tryptophan (Trp) and tryptamine hydrochloride (TA) were studied in reverse micelles solutions made with the cationic surfactant benzylhexadecyldimethylammonium chloride (BHDC) in benzene as a function of the molar ratio water/surfactant R (=[H2O]/[BHDC]). The fluorescence quenching of the model compound MI by benzene in cyclohexane solutions and by BHDC in benzene solutions were also studied in detail. The fluorescence of MI in benzene is characteristic of a charge-transfer exciplex. The exciplex is quenched by the presence of BHDC, due to the interactions of the surfactant ion pairs with the polar exciplex. In reverse micelle solutions at low R values, all the indoles show exciplex-type fluorescence. As R increases, the fluorescence behavior strongly depends on the nature of the indole derivative. The anionic IAA remains anchored to the cationic interface and its fluorescence is quenched upon water addition due to the increases of interface's micropolarity. For IETA, TA and Trp an initial fluorescence quenching is observed at increasing R, but a fluorescence recovery is observed at R > 5, indicating a probe partition between the micellar interface and the water pool. For the neutral MI, the fluorescence changes with R indicate the partition of the probe between the micellar interface and the bulk benzene pseudophase. A simple two-site model is proposed for the calculation of the partition constants K as a function of R. In all cases, the calculation showed that even at the highest R value, about 90% of the indole molecules remain associated at the micellar interface. Kostjukov Abstract We report a computation methodology, which leads to the ability to partition the Gibb's free energy for the complexation reaction of aromatic drug molecules with DNA. Using this approach, it is now possible to calculate the absolute values of the energy contributions of various physical factors to the DNA binding process, whose summation gives a value that is reasonably close to the experimentally measured Gibb's free energy of binding. Magurran Abstract It has been known for 50 years that the time period over which data are collected affects the shape of empirical species abundance distributions. However, despite a recent resurgence of interest in characterizing and explaining these patterns the temporal component of species abundance distributions has been largely ignored. I argue that it is essential to take account of time, and not only because sampling duration can have a profound influence on the perceived shape of the distribution. Partitions of species abundance distributions based on temporal occurrence in the record will facilitate tests of both biological and neutral models and may lead to a better understanding of rarity. These temporal partitions also have interesting, but as yet barely explored, parallels with spatial ones such as the core-satellite division. Moreover, changes in abundance distributions across all three of Preston's temporal scales (sampling time, ecological time and evolutionary time) present rich opportunities for ecological research. Pina I.3.6 [Computer Graphics]: Graphics data structures and data types Abstract BqR-Tree, the data structure presented in this paper is an improved R-Tree data structure based on a quadtree spatial partitioning which improves the rendering speed of the usual R-trees when view-culling is implemented, especially in urban scenes. The city is split by means of a spatial quadtree partition and the block is adopted as the basic urban unit. One advantage of blocks is that they can be easily identified in any urban environment, regardless of the origins and structure of the input data. The aim of the structure is to accelerate the visualization of complex scenes containing not only static but dynamic elements. The usefulness of the structure has been tested with low structured data, which makes its application appropriate to almost all city data. The results of the tests show that when using the BqR-Tree structure to perform walkthroughs and flights, rendering times vastly improve in comparison to the data structures which have yielded best results to date, with average improvements of around 30%. [source] Tunneling enhanced by web page content block partition for focused crawlingCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 1 2008Tao Peng Abstract The complexity of web information environments and multiple-topic web pages are negative factors significantly affecting the performance of focused crawling. A highly relevant region in a web page may be obscured because of low overall relevance of that page. Segmenting the web pages into smaller units will significantly improve the performance. Conquering and traversing irrelevant page to reach a relevant one (tunneling) can improve the effectiveness of focused crawling by expanding its reach. This paper presents a heuristic-based method to enhance focused crawling performance. The method uses a Document Object Model (DOM)-based page partition algorithm to segment a web page into content blocks with a hierarchical structure and investigates how to take advantage of block-level evidence to enhance focused crawling by tunneling. Page segmentation can transform an uninteresting multi-topic web page into several single topic context blocks and some of which may be interesting. Accordingly, focused crawler can pursue the interesting content blocks to retrieve the relevant pages. Experimental results indicate that this approach outperforms Breadth-First, Best-First and Link-context algorithm both in harvest rate, target recall and target length. Dominik Abstract Redox and size speciation of chromium in rivers contaminated with tannery wastewater was carried out to provide insight into its transport and removal mechanisms. Total chromium was determined with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry and Cr,(VI) with Catalytic Adsorption Stripping Voltammetry. For the size speciation, particles were retained with a cartridge filter (cut-off 1.2,,m) and the total filterable fraction was further fractionated with Tangential Flow Filtration to determine the concentrations of chromium associated with the High Molecular Weight Colloidal (HMWC), Low Molecular Weight Colloidal (LMWC) and Truly Dissolved (TD) fractions. Two fluvial systems of similar sizes, but located in contrasting climatic zones, were selected for comparison: the Sebou-Fez system in Morocco and Dunajec River-Czorsztyn Reservoir system in Poland. Particulate Cr dominated in the Sebou-Fez system (about 90,%); while in the Dunajec-Czorsztyn system, it represented only 17,53,% of the total chromium in raw water. Still, the partition coefficients [Kd] were of the same magnitude. Chromium,(III) was the only form detected in Sebou-Fez, whereas in Dunajec-Czorsztyn Cr,(VI) was also present with its proportion increasing downstream from the input of tannery wastewater due to the preferential removal of Cr,(III). In the filtered water in Morocco a large fraction of Cr occurred in the HMWC fraction (50,70,%) at the two most contaminated sites, while the LMWC and TD forms prevailed at the non-contaminated sites in the Sebou River. At a very high concentration, in the water in the proximity of tanneries (well above the theoretical saturation level) Cr precipitated as polynuclear Cr-hydroxide. In Dunajec-Czorsztyn, the partition of Cr,(III) was approximately equal between the HMWC, LMWC and TD fractions, in contrast to Cr,(VI) which occurred almost exclusively in the TD fraction. In both systems, Cr,(III) was rapidly removed from the water to the sediments. The confluence of the Sebou with the Fez and the Czorsztyn reservoir trapped efficiently Cr,(III) preventing its spreading over long distances. Cr,(VI) showed conservative behavior and bypassed the Czorsztyn Reservoir. This study provides a first set of data on the partitioning of Cr,(III) and Cr,(VI) between the particulate, the colloidal and truly dissolved fractions in fluvial systems contaminated with tannery effluents. It also suggests that, in these systems, truly dissolved Cr,(III) can be adequately modeled from the total filterable concentrations. [source] A thermodynamics-based estimation model for adsorption of organic compounds by carbonaceous materials in environmental sorbentsENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 6 2003Paul C. M. van Noort Abstract A model was developed to estimate Langmuir affinities for adsorption of low-polarity organic compounds from either water or air by carbonaceous sorbents. Sorption enthalpies and entropies provided the basic information for the description of sorption affinities in terms of the entropy of melting and either solubility in water or vapor pressure. For m -xylene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorobenzenes on 10 different sorbents, 80% of the measured sorption affinities fall within a factor of four of the model estimates. Equations for the limiting distribution coefficients in terms of either octanol,air (KOA) or octanol,water partition (Kow) coefficients were derived from regressions of calculated affinities combined with an estimated relation between experimental Langmuir sorption capacities and Kow. Estimated soot,water distribution coefficients were within a factor of three of measured data for polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and lower molecular weight PAHs on automotive soot samples and captured the dependence of PCB distribution coefficients on the extent of ortho substitution. For higher molecular weight PAHs, sorption was underestimated. For soot in sediment,water distribution coefficients of PAHs and PCBs, estimated values captured both the trend of measured data with Kow and the dependence on sorbate planarity. Tentative application to aerosol,air distribution explained the observed independence of distribution coefficient,KOA relations for PCBs on the extent of ortho substitution and suggested nonequilibrium conditions for PAHs in comparison with recent measurements. [source] Disabled-1 mRNA and protein expression in developing human cortexEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 3 2003Gundela Meyer Abstract Disabled-1 (Dab1) forms part of the Reelin,Dab1 signalling pathway that controls neuronal positioning during brain development; Dab1 deficiency gives rise to a reeler-like inversion of cortical layers. To establish a timetable of Dab1 expression in developing human brain, Dab1 mRNA and protein expression were studied in prenatal human cortex. The earliest Dab1 signal was detected at 7 gestational weeks (GW), the stage of transition from preplate to cortical plate, suggesting a role of the Reelin,Dab1 signalling pathway in preplate partition. From 12 to 20 GW, the period of maximum cortical migration, Dab1 expression was prominent in the upper tiers of the cortical plate, to decline after midgestation. Radially orientated apical dendrites of Dab1-expressing neurons indicated a predominant pyramidal phenotype. Pyramidal cells in hippocampus and entorhinal cortex displayed a more protracted time of Dab1 expression compared to neocortex. In addition, at later stages (18,25 GW), Dab1 was also expressed in large neurons scattered throughout intermediate zone and subplate. From 14 to 22 GW, particularly high levels of Dab1 mRNA and protein were observed in cells of the ventricular/subventricular zone displaying the morphology of radial glia. The partial colocalization of vimentin and Dab1 in cells of the ventricular zone supported a radial glia phenotype. The concentration of Dab1 protein in ventricular endfeet and initial portions of radial processes of ventricular-zone cells points to a possible involvement of Dab1 in neurogenesis. Furthermore, a subset of Cajal,Retzius cells in the marginal zone colocalized Dab1 and Reelin, and may thus represent a novel target of the Reelin,Dab1 signalling pathway. [source] Wavelet analysis of the scale- and location-dependent correlation of modelled and measured nitrous oxide emissions from soilEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2005A. E. Milne Summary We used the wavelet transform to quantify the performance of models that predict the rate of emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from soil. Emissions of N2O and other soil variables that influence emissions were measured on soil cores collected at 256 locations across arable land in Bedfordshire, England. Rate-limiting models of N2O emissions were constructed and fitted to the data by functional analysis. These models were then evaluated by wavelet variance and wavelet correlations, estimated from coefficients of the adapted maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (AMODWT), of the fitted and measured emission rates. We estimated wavelet variances to assess whether the partition of the variance of modelled rates of N2O emission between scales reflected that of the data. Where the relative distribution of variance in the model is more skewed to coarser scales than is the case for the observation, for example, this indicates that the model predictions are too smooth spatially, and fail adequately to represent some of the variation at finer scales. Scale-dependent wavelet correlations between model and data were used to quantify the model performance at each scale, and in several cases to determine the scale at which the model description of the data broke down. We detected significant changes in correlation between modelled and predicted emissions at each spatial scale, showing that, at some scales, model performance was not uniform in space. This suggested that the influence of a soil variable on N2O emissions, important in one region but not in another, had been omitted from the model or modelled poorly. Change points usually occurred at field boundaries or where soil textural class changed. We show that wavelet analysis can be used to quantify aspects of model performance that other methods cannot. By evaluating model behaviour at several scales and positions wavelet analysis helps us to determine whether a model is suitable for a particular purpose. A workflow for an automated characterization of the void space topology is presented, using a partition of the system volume into polyhedral cells connected by skeletal throats. [source] THE EFFECTS OF GENOTYPE, AGE, AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT ON MALE ORNAMENTATION, MATING BEHAVIOR, AND ATTRACTIVENESSEVOLUTION, Issue 11 2005Lisa K. Miller Abstract The traits thought to advertise genetic quality are often highly susceptible to environmental variation and prone to change with age. These factors may either undermine or reinforce the potential for advertisement traits to signal quality depending on the magnitude of age-dependent expression, environmental variation, and genotype-age and genotype-environment interaction. Measurements of the magnitude of these effects are thus a necessary step toward assessing the implications of age dependence and environmental variability for the evolution of signals of quality. We conducted a longitudinal study of male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from 22 full-sibling families. Each fish was assigned at maturity to one of three treatments in order to manipulate his allocation of resources to reproduction: a control in which the male was kept alone, a courtship-only treatment in which he could see and court a female across a clear partition, and a mating treatment in which he interacted freely with a female. We measured each male's size, ornamental color patterns, courtship, attractiveness to females, and mating success at three ages. Size was influenced by treatment and age-treatment interactions, indicating that courtship and mating may impose costs on growth. Tail size and color patterns were influenced by age but not by treatment, suggesting fixed age-dependent trajectories in these advertisement traits. By contrast, display rate and attempted sneak copulation rate differed among treatments but not among ages, suggesting greater plasticity of these behavioral traits. As a result of the different patterns of variation in ornamentation and behavior, male attractiveness and mating success responded to male age, treatment, and the interaction between age and treatment. Neither age nor treatment obscured the presence of genetic variation, and the genetic relationship between male ornamentation and attractiveness remained the same among treatments. Our findings suggest that neither age-dependent variation nor environmentally induced variation in reproductive effort is likely to undermine the reliability of male signaling. Powers SUMMARY The Hox genes have been found to encode transcription factors, which specify the morphological identity of structures along the anteroposterior axis of animals ranging from worms to mice. The canonical set of nine genes is organized in a cluster in the genome of several protostomes and deuterostomes. However, within insects, whereas the Hox genes are organized in a single cluster in the beetle Tribolium castaneum, they are split into two separate groups in the flies Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila virilis. The significance of a split Hox cluster is unknown and has been observed in only one organism outside the Drosophila lineage: the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. We have cloned a majority of the Hox genes from the mosquito Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) and compared their genomic organization with that of Tribolium and Drosophila to determine if a split Hox cluster is found in dipterans aside from the Drosophilidae. We find that the Hox genes in Anopheles, as in Tribolium, are organized in a single cluster that spans a genomic region of at least 700 kb. This finding suggests that, within the insect genome, the partition of the Hox cluster may have evolved exclusively within the Drosophila lineage. The genomic structures of the resident genes, however, appear to be largely conserved between A. gambiae and D. melanogaster. MUSIVAND-ARZANFUDI ABSTRACT The parametric meshless Galerkin method (PMGM) enhances the promising features of the meshless methods by utilizing the parametric spaces and parametric mapping, and improves their efficiency from the practical viewpoints. The computation of meshless shape functions has been usually a time-consuming and complicated task in the meshless methods. In the PMGM, the meshless shape functions are mapped from the parametric space to the physical space, and therefore, the necessary computational time to generate the meshless shape functions is saved. The extended parametric meshless Galerkin method (X-PMGM) even improves the parametric property of the PMGM by incorporating the partition of unity concepts. In this paper, the development of the X-PMGM is extended by incorporating a crack-tip formulation in X-PMGM for fracture analysis and prediction of crack propagation path in the damaged structures. In this formulation, meshless shape functions are enriched by discontinuous enrichment function as well as crack-tip enrichment functions. The obtained results show that the predicted crack growth path is in good agreement with the experimental results. POMMIER ABSTRACT The mode I displacement field in the near crack tip region is assumed to be depicted by its partition into an elastic field and a plastic field. Then, each part of the displacement field is also assumed to be the product of a reference field, a function of space coordinates only, and of an intensity factor, function of the loading conditions. This assumption, classical in fracture mechanics, enables one to work at the global scale since fracture criteria can be formulated as a function of the stress intensity factors only. In the present case, the intensity factor of the plastic part of the displacement field measures crack tip plastic flow rate at the global scale. On the basis of these hypotheses, the energy balance equation and the second law of thermodynamics are written at the global scale, i.e. the scale of the K-dominance area. This enables one to establish a yield criterion and a plastic flow rule for the crack tip region. Then, assuming a relation between plastic flow in the crack tip region and fatigue crack growth allows an incremental model for fatigue crack growth to be built. A few examples are given to show the versatility of the model and its ability to reproduce memory effects associated with crack tip plasticity. [source] Caveolin-1 influences P2X7 receptor expression and localization in mouse lung alveolar epithelial cellsFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 12 2007K. Barth The P2X7 receptor has recently been described as a marker for lung alveolar epithelial type I cells. Here, we demonstrate both the expression of P2X7 protein and its partition into lipid rafts in the mouse lung alveolar epithelial cell line E10. A significant degree of colocalization was observed between P2X7 and the raft marker protein Caveolin-1; also, P2X7 protein was associated with caveolae. A marked reduction in P2X7 immunoreactivity was observed in lung sections prepared from Caveolin-1-knockout mice, indicating that Caveolin-1 expression was required for full expression of P2X7 protein. Indeed, suppression of Caveolin-1 protein expression in E10 cells using short hairpin RNAs resulted in a large reduction in P2X7 protein expression. Our data demonstrate a potential interaction between P2X7 protein and Caveolin-1 in lipid rafts, and provide a basis for further functional and biochemical studies to probe the physiologic significance of this interaction. [source] Binding of rat brain hexokinase to recombinant yeast mitochondriaFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 10 2000Identification of necessary physico-chemical determinants The association of rat brain hexokinase with heterologous recombinant yeast mitochondria harboring human porin (Yh) is comparable to that with rat liver mitochondria in terms of cation requirements, cooperativity in binding, and the effect of amphipathic compounds. Mg2+, which is required for hexokinase binding to all mitochondria, can be replaced by other cations. The efficiency of hexokinases, however, depends on the valence of hydrophilic cations, or the partition of hydrophobic cations in the membrane, implying that these act by reducing a prohibitive negative surface charge density on the outer membrane rather than fulfilling a specific structural requirement. Macromolecular crowding (using dextran) has dual effects. Dextran added in excess increases hexokinase binding to yeast mitochondria, according to the porin molecule they harbor. This effect, significant with wild-type yeast mitochondria, is only marginal with Yh as well as rat mitochondria. On the other hand, an increase in the number of hexokinase binding sites on mitochondria is also observed. This increase, moderate in wild-type organelles, is more pronounced with Yh. Finally, dextran, which has no effect on the modulation of hexokinase binding by cations, abolishes the inhibitory effect of amphipathic compounds. Thus, while hexokinase binding to mitochondria is predetermined by the porin molecule, the organization of the latter in the membrane plays a critical role as well, indicative that porin must associate with other mitochondrial components to form competent binding sites on the outer membrane. In many complex foods this volatile compound could also serve interesting technological functions, as well as extending their shelf-lives, owing to its capacity to inhibit or reduce the rate of microbial growth. At the European level there are no known restrictions regarding the use of ethanol in foods as a preservative, while in Italy, current regulations allow its addition as an anti-moulding agent in pre-packed bread, at a maximum concentration of 2% on a dry weight basis. This research studied the effect of water activity (aw) and water content on the ethanol vapour pressure of sliced white bread, previously equilibrated at various aw values and with 2% ethanol added. Different aw values were obtained by both rehydration from previously freeze-dried bread, and dehydration from the fresh product. The results showed that both aw and moisture affected the vapour pressure of ethanol as a consequence of water,solute and ethanol,solute interactions in the matrix. These interactions varied according to the modality of equilibration (desorption or absorption) at a given aw. The results are discussed in terms of ethanol activity (ae), computed as the ratio between the ethanol vapour pressure in bread and the vapour pressure of pure ethanol at the same temperature. This index, analogous to aw, proved to be useful in evaluating the ,freedom' of the ethanol present in a food matrix to be released in the vapour phase. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Such a classification framework should provide a mapping of landscape form and hydro-climatic conditions on catchment function (including partition, storage, and release of water), while explicitly accounting for uncertainty and for variability at multiple temporal and spatial scales. This framework would provide an organizing principle, create a common language, guide modeling and measurement efforts, and provide constraints on predictions in ungauged basins, as well as on estimates of environmental change impacts. In this article, we (i) review existing approaches to define hydrologic similarity and to catchment classification; (ii) discuss outstanding components or characteristics that should be included in a classification scheme; and (iii) provide a basic framework for catchment classification as a starting point for further analysis. Possible metrics to describe form, hydro-climate, and function are suggested and discussed. We close the discussion with a list of requirements for the classification framework and open questions that require addressing in order to fully implement it. Open questions include: How can we best represent characteristics of form and hydro-climatic conditions? How does this representation change with spatial and temporal scale? [source] Impact of land use on the hydraulic properties of the topsoil in a small French catchmentHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 17 2010E. Gonzalez-Sosa Abstract The hydraulic properties of the topsoil control the partition of rainfall into infiltration and runoff at the soil surface. They must be characterized for distributed hydrological modelling. This study presents the results of a field campaign documenting topsoil hydraulic properties in a small French suburban catchment (7 km2) located near Lyon, France. Two types of infiltration tests were performed: single ring infiltration tests under positive head and tension-disk infiltration using a mini-disk. Both categories were processed using the BEST,Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters,method to derive parameters describing the retention and hydraulic conductivity curves. Dry bulk density and particle size data were also sampled. Almost all the topsoils were found to belong to the sandy loam soil class. No significant differences in hydraulic properties were found in terms of pedologic units, but the results showed a high impact of land use on these properties. The lowest dry bulk density values were obtained in forested soils with the highest organic matter content. Permanent pasture soils showed intermediate values, whereas the highest values were encountered in cultivated lands. For saturated hydraulic conductivity, the highest values were found in broad-leaved forests and small woods. The complementary use of tension-disk and positive head infiltration tests highlighted a sharp increase of hydraulic conductivity between near saturation and saturated conditions, attributed to macroporosity effect. The ratio of median saturated hydraulic conductivity to median hydraulic conductivity at a pressure of , 20 mm of water was about 50. The study suggests that soil texture, such as used in most pedo-transfer functions, might not be sufficient to properly map the variability of soil hydraulic properties. Land use information should be considered in the parameterizations of topsoil within hydrological models to better represent in situ conditions, as illustrated in the paper.
