Selected AbstractsTowards virtualized desktop environmentCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 4 2010Xiaofei Liao Abstract Virtualization is being widely used now as an emerging trend. Rapid improvements in network bandwidth, ubiquitous security hazards and high total cost of ownership of personal computers have created a growing market for desktop virtualization. Much like server virtualization, virtualizing desktops involves separating the physical location of a client device from its logical interface. But, the performance and usability of some traditional desktop frameworks do not satisfy end-users. Other solutions, including WebOS, which needs to rebuild all daily-used applications into Client/Server mode, cannot be easily accepted by people in a short time. We present LVD, a system that combines the virtualization technology and inexpensive personal computers (PCs) to realize a lightweight virtual desktop system. Comparing to the previous desktop systems, LVD builds an integrated novel desktop environment, which can support the backup, mobility, suspending and resuming of per-user's working environment, and support synchronous using of incompatible applications on different platforms and achieves great saving in power consumption. We have implemented LVD in a cluster with Xen and compared its performance against widely used commercial approaches, including Microsoft RDP, Citrix MetaFrameXP and Sun Ray. [source] The Sieve Model: An innovative process for identifying alternatives to custody evaluationsCONFLICT RESOLUTION QUARTERLY, Issue 3 2009Robert B. Silver This article reviews the development of the Sieve Model, conceived from dissatisfaction with adversarial processes that encouraged endless destructive fighting and depletion of financial and emotional family resources. Adversarial approaches discourage constructive problem solving and cooperation and are very hard on children. Rather than a piecemeal approach toward divorce, a systemic model was conceived. The Sieve Model is being implemented in the 20th Judicial Circuit of the State of Florida through differentiated case management, after a study revealed that protracted cases primarily involved disputes over children. Families are invited to use pertinent elements in an individualized fashion. Family law professionals are challenged to develop other solution-based efforts akin to mediation to assist families of divorce. The Sieve Model encourages participants to practice solving problems rather than creating them, decreasing divorce brutality and postjudgment conflicts. Birkmann Abstract By using reflectivity and temperature resolved Hall measurements the electrical properties of low pressure solution grown (LPSG) GaN are determined. Hall measurements show that the material is degenerate. The reflectivity spectra are governed by the free electron gas in accordance with this finding. The charge carrier concentration is about 4 × 1019 cm,3 and the mobility 70 , 80 cm2/V s. MATSUI Summary Reasons for performing study: In man, muscle protein synthesis is accelerated by administering amino acids (AA) and glucose (Glu), because increased availability of amino acids and increased insulin secretion, is known to have a protein anabolic effect. However, in the horse, the effect on muscle hypertrophy of such nutrition management following exercise is unknown. Objectives: To determine the effect of AA and Glu administration following exercise on muscle protein turnover in horses. We hypothesise that administration of AA and Glu after exercise effects muscle hypertrophy in horses, as already shown in man and other animals. Methods: Measurements of the rate of synthesis (Rs) and rate of degradation (Rd) of muscle protein in the hindlimb femoral region of thoroughbred horses were conducted using the isotope dilution method to assess the differences between the artery and iliac vein. Six adult Thoroughbreds received a continuous infusion of L-[ring- 2H5]-phenylalanine during the study, the stable period for plasma isotope concentrations (60 min), resting periods (60 min), treadmill exercise (15 min) and recovery period (240 min). All horses were given 4 solutions (saline [Cont], 10% AA [10-AA], 10% Glu [10-Glu] and a mixture with 10% AA and 10% Glu [10-Mix]) over 120 min after exercise, and the Rs and Rd of muscle protein in the hindlimb measured. Results: The average Rs during the 75,120 min following administration of 10-Mix was significantly greater than for the other solutions (P<0.05). The second most effective solution was 10-AA, and there was no change in Rs after 10-Glu. Conclusions: Administration of AA following exercise accelerated Rs in the hindlimb femoral region, and this effect was enhanced when combined with glucose, because of increasing insulin secretion or a decreased requirement for AA for energy. Potential relevance: Further studies are required regarding the effect on muscle hypertrophy of supplementing amino acids and glucose in the feed of exercising horses. [source] The Impact of Occupational Sex Segregation on Family Businesses: The Case of American Harness RacingGENDER, WORK & ORGANISATION, Issue 4 2006Elizabeth A. Larsen Previous research on occupational sex segregation agrees that the workplace is not an isolated world but instead influences, and is influenced by, other spheres of social life. Identifying specific social factors both internal and external to the workplace, and how these may interact, can provide deeper insights into how occupational sex segregation is created and maintained. This study focuses on individual family businesses in American harness horse racing, a previously unexamined and highly sex-segregated industry, and provides insights in how vertical and horizontal sex segregation may develop in family businesses. The findings show how the belief that married couples cannot debate and resolve work-related conflicts without undue strain on their personal relationship leads some of these couples to organize their work into gendered tasks and workspaces, contributing to the maintenance of vertical segregation in the trainer position. The implications for segregation of other solutions, such as operating separate businesses, or working for another business, are less clear. [source] An investigation of genetic algorithms for the optimization of multi-objective fisheries bioeconomic modelsINTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS IN OPERATIONAL RESEARCH, Issue 1 2000S.J. Mardle Abstract The use of genetic algorithms (GA) for optimization problems offers an alternative approach to the traditional solution methods. GA follow the concept of solution evolution, by stochastically developing generations of solution populations using a given fitness statistic, for example the achievement function in goal programs. They are particularly applicable to problems which are large, non-linear and possibly discrete in nature, features that traditionally add to the degree of complexity of solution. Owing to the probabilistic development of populations, GA do not distinguish solutions, e.g. local optima from other solutions, and therefore cannot guarantee optimality even though a global optimum may be reached. In this paper, a non-linear goal program of the North Sea demersal fisheries is used to develop a genetic algorithm for optimization. Comparisons between the GA approach and traditional solution methods are made, in order to measure the relative effectiveness. General observations of the use of GA in multi-objective fisheries bioeconomic models, and other similar models, are discussed. [source] Preservation of mouse liver tissue during cold storage in experimental solutions assessed by x-ray microanalysisLIVER TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 3 2003Inna Kozlova The increasing use of organs for transplantation necessitates the development of optimal preservation techniques. The goal of this study was to investigate changes in elemental content in mouse liver cells during cold storage by x-ray microanalysis in parallel with morphologic studies. Tissue was stored at 4°C for 4 to 12 hours in normal Krebs-Ringer solution (high sodium/potassium ratio), modified Krebs-Ringer solution (low Na+/K+ ratio), Euro-Collins solution, University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, or seven modified versions of the UW solution. Incubation of liver in normal Krebs-Ringer solution caused a significant increase in sodium and decrease in potassium concentrations in contrast to incubation in other solutions. The concentration of sodium, potassium, and chlorine in the cells closely followed the concentration in the storage solution, indicating that the intracellular concentration of these ions during storage is entirely dependent on diffusion processes. The calcium concentration was independent of the storage solution used. Studies by light and transmission electron microscopy showed good preservation of hepatocytes after storage for 8 and 12 hours in UW solution and its variants, modified Krebs-Ringer solution and Euro-Collins solution, but showed moderate damage to mitochondria and swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum in normal Krebs-Ringer solution. In addition, damage to the sinusoidal endothelial cells was observed after 4 hours in normal Krebs-Ringer solution and after 8 to 12 hours in the other solutions. In conclusion, the only factor determining the intracellular concentration of diffusible ions after cold tissue storage is the ionic composition of the extracellular medium. X-ray microanalysis provides an objective method for assessing whether the intracellular ionic composition of tissue is maintained during storage. [source] Impact of modified acidic soft drinks on enamel erosionORAL DISEASES, Issue 1 2005T Attin Objective:, To evaluate the enamel erosive potential of modified acidic soft drinks under controlled conditions in an artificial mouth. Materials and methods:, From each of 144 bovine incisors one enamel sample was prepared. Labial surfaces of the samples were ground flat, polished and covered with adhesive tape, leaving an exposed area. The samples were distributed among four (A,D) groups for treatment with A: Coca-Cola, B: Sprite; C: Sprite light, D: orange juice. Either 1.0 mmol l,1 calcium (Ca) or a combination (comb.) of 0.5 mmol l,1 calcium plus 0.5 mmol l,1 phosphate plus 0.031 mmol l,1 fluoride was added to the beverages. Samples of each group were subdivided into three subgroups (-original; -Ca and -comb.) for treatment with original and modified drinks. De- and remineralization cycles were based on a standard protocol described earlier. Surface loss of the specimens was determined using profilometry after test procedure. Results:, In all subgroups, loss of enamel was observed. The enamel loss recorded for the samples rinsed with original Sprite and original orange juice was significantly higher compared with all other solutions (P = 0.001). Lowest enamel loss was recorded for the original Coca-Cola group (P = 0.001). With the exception of Coca-Cola, demineralization with the modified beverages led to significantly lower losses compared with the respective original solutions. Conclusion:, Modification of the test soft drinks with low concentrations of calcium or a combination of calcium, phosphate and fluoride may exert a significant protective potential with respect to dental erosion.
