,Allowed into a Man's World' Meanings of Work,Life Balance: Perspectives of Women Civil Engineers as ,Minority' Workers in Construction

This article discusses how women working as civil engineers within the UK construction industry perceive work,life balance and considers strategies they use to achieve this. The findings are presented of a qualitative research project that explored the experiences of women in this role, focusing on the subcultural context of a profession that is dominated by the values of presenteeism and infinite availability. A feminist post-structuralist framework is used to analyse how women negotiate their personal and professional time and the extent to which their other roles as carers and nurturers unsettle male work practices in this highly gendered profession. There are gradually increasing numbers of women in professional construction roles and their success appears to depend on being able to fit in to the dominant masculine culture of long working hours and the male pub gathering. Despite an increased presence, women's minority status in construction continues to challenge their professional identity and this is central to the conflict many face between the dual roles of corporate worker and private non-work person. Roles of nuclear factor-,B in postischemic liver

Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) results in a chain of events that culminate in liver dysfunction and injury. I/R injury is characterized by early oxidant stress followed by an intense acute inflammatory response that involves the transcription factor nuclear factor (NF)-,B. In addition to being a primary regulator of pro-inflammatory gene expression, NF-,B may play other roles in the hepatic response to I/R, such as mediating the expression of anti-apoptotic genes, preventing the accumulation of damaging reactive oxygen species, facilitating liver regeneration, and mediating the protective effects of ischemic preconditioning. In the present study, we review the diverse functions of NF-,B during hepatic I/R injury. [source]


Host preference and performance of lichenivorous Eilema spp. larvae in relation to lichen secondary metabolites

Summary 1We compared the larval host preference of four lichenivorous Eilema (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) species on four common epiphytic lichen species including Hypogymnia physodes, Melanelia exasperata, Vulpicida pinastri and Xanthoria parietina. Survival and growth of larvae on different species were monitored and correlation to qualitative and quantitative variation in lichen secondary compounds was analysed. 2All moth species preferred M. exasperata, which does not contain polyphenolic substances, over other lichens, but also foraged on other lichens in the food preference experiment. All larvae reared on V. pinastri and H. physodes died during the growth and survival experiment. Survival of larvae on X. parietina and M. exasperata were equal. Larvae grew faster and and bigger on M. exasperata than on other lichens. 3Consumption and utilization measurements also revealed that M. exasperata was of the highest quality, although the relative consumption rate was highest on X. parietina. Our results indicate that different secondary chemicals have different effect against lichenivores or that larvae are either well adapted to certain chemicals or that these chemicals may have other roles than antiherbivore function for lichens. 4It is suggested that lichenivorous lepidopteran species may have different adaptations, such as dietary mixing to receive nutrients in optimal proportions or compensatory feeding ability to ensure the maximal growth efficiency on a suboptimal host. Nursing home care: whodunit?

Aims and objectives., (1) To analyse and compare (changes and differences in) activity profiles of various types of nursing home care. (2) To assess the impact of integrated care on these activity profiles. Background., Because of an ongoing introduction of integrated nursing home care, caregivers increasingly have to co-ordinate their activities, engage into interprofessional relationships and take over each other's tasks. Consequently, activity profiles [i.e. combinations of (contributions to) care activities and the roles that perform them] are expected to change. Design/methods., At three measurement points in the period 1999,2003, caregivers (in 18 different roles) recorded and listed direct and indirect care activities. A total of 41 335 lists were analysed to derive activity profiles of traditional, transitional and integrated nursing home care in the Netherlands. Results., Traditional, transitional and integrated care shared some comparable activity profiles. Integrated care differed from the other types with respect to the contribution of the geriatric nurse, recreational activities supervisor, nutrition assistant, household assistant and nursing assistant to activities such as extra care, handling food and club activities. Contrary to the other roles, the licensed practical nurse contributed to (almost) all activities in all types of care. Conclusions., Nursing home care has several recurring activity profiles. These profiles are the same in all types of nursing home care. The introduction of integrated care implies that particular profiles have to be added to these profiles. As a generalist, the licensed practical nurse seems to play a key role in all activity profiles. Relevance to clinical practice., Because of demographic and financial pressures, integrated care for older people becomes increasingly important. By addressing the impact of integrated care on activity profiles, this paper provides information on how new types of care can be delivered in the most effective manner. [source]


CFOs in e-business: e-architects or foot-soldiers?

Both the role of the CFO (chief financial officer) and the discipline of accounting can be viewed as being in transition due to developments in the e-Business world. One perspective suggests that CFOs are becoming ,e-process architects',an alternative suggests that the CFO role is becoming commoditized to ,foot-soldier' status with other roles such as CIOs (chief information officers) and CTOs (chief technology officers) staking a claim to its traditional accounting space. In this paper we present some preliminary evidence relating to this e-architect/foot-soldier question, and on levels of e-Business activity, based on data obtained from over 120 CFOs in the Irish ICT sector. Organizational structures that support internal program evaluation

This chapter explores how the structure of large complex organizations such as Cooperative Extension affects their ability to support internal evaluation of their programs and activities. Following a literature review of organizational structure and its relation to internal evaluation capacity, the chapter presents the results of interviews with 10 selected Extension evaluators. Four structures for evaluation in Extension organizations are identified: (1) a separate evaluation unit, (2) within an administrative unit, (3) within a program area, and (4) within an academic department or school. The interviews addressed the philosophy and approach to program evaluation, what evaluators do, the perceived effects of organizational structure on evaluation, and reflections on the optimal structure for program evaluation in Extension. Several conclusions are presented: the evaluation function should be associated with a high administrative level in the organization, locating the evaluation function in program units appears to be preferred, roles and responsibilities of internal evaluators need to be clearly specified, internal evaluators need to work closely with administration and management to carry out their roles effectively and to incorporate evaluation into organizational decision making, and internal evaluators often assume other roles beyond their primary role as evaluator. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A scholarly account of the formative discussions, the founding and the first 20 years of the Photogrammetric Society was published in 1971 and republished in 1974. This present review concentrates on the latter years of the life of the Photogrammetric Society prior to its merger with the Remote Sensing Society in 2001. The authors joined the Photogrammetric Society in 1960 and were conspicuous in its affairs for many years. Although both occupied the Society's presidential chair, they also fulfilled several other roles in its efficient management. Atkinson's first contribution to the Photogrammetric Record was published in 1968 and Newton's in 1971. [source]


Roles of lipid-soluble vitamins during ontogeny of marine fish larvae

Abstract The roles of lipid-soluble vitamins during ontogeny of marine fish larvae are a subject topic where only fragments of the whole picture are known. Most of the research has been focussed on the larval requirements and the availability of these vitamins in the live feed organisms used for early-stage larvae, while the function of the vitamins in the larvae themselves is largely unknown. Our knowledge is mostly extrapolated from research on other vertebrates and also in part from juvenile and adult fish. Vitamin A is known to be essential for establishing body and organ axes in vertebrate embryos and interacts with other nutrients such as vitamin D and fatty acids through the steroid/thyroid nuclear hormone receptor family. In marine fish larvae, excess vitamin A stimulates pigmentation, but at the same time induces vertebral deformities. Live feed organisms contain very little vitamin A but marine fish larvae appear to convert carotenoids in Artemia and copepods to vitamin A, while rotifers, which contain little carotenoids, should be enriched with vitamin A. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and is important for the protection of marine fish larvae against the oxidation pressure probably present in intensive rearing systems. Vitamin E may also have other roles connected to its modulation of cell and tissue red-ox balance. In marine fish larvae and juveniles, vitamin E has been shown to enhance the symptoms of vitamin C deficiency, while protecting against the oxidative effect of n-3 fatty acids. Vitamin D is important for the modulation of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and for the development of the vertebrate skeleton. Vitamin K influences bone development and coagulation of the blood. There is little information on vitamins D and K connected to the ontogeny of marine fish larvae. [source]


The leucine-rich repeat domain in plant innate immunity: a wealth of possibilities

Summary The innate immune system of both plants and animals uses immune receptors to detect pathogens and trigger defence responses. Despite having distinct evolutionary origin, most plant and animal immune receptors have a leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domain. The LRR domain adopts a slender conformation that maximizes surface area and has been shown to be ideal for mediating protein,protein interactions. Although the LRR domain was expected to be a platform for pathogen recognition, the NB-LRR class of plant innate immune receptors uses its LRR domain to carry out many other roles. This review discusses the domain architecture of plant LRRs and the various roles ascribed to this motif. [source]


Interprofessional education: the interface of nursing and social work

Aims., To examine the influence of interdisciplinary seminars on undergraduate nursing and social work students' perceptions of their learning. Background., Collaboration is considered to be important for health professionals in working towards good patient care, and interdisciplinary education is seen as one way of addressing this need for greater collaboration and team work. Today's health professionals are dealing with an increasing number of older and chronically ill patients. The biopsychosocial dimensions inherent in such chronic illnesses bring about a closer working relationship between the nursing and social work professions to foster good patient care. No local research in Hong Kong, however, has looked specifically at how these two professions can develop their collaborative skills and qualities through interdisciplinary education. Design., Mixed methods design. Method., Data from questionnaires, videotape recordings of the sessions and follow-up phone interviews were used for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Results., The findings revealed three themes: an increased awareness of each other's professional values and personal judgement, a recognition of each other's disciplinary knowledge emphases and more, and an appreciation for, and learning about each other's roles for future collaboration. Conclusions., Whilst, it is usual to identify health professionals as non-judgemental, it is also important to recognise the existence of their personal and professional values and beliefs that shape their decision-making. Equally beneficial for students is their reported understanding of the other discipline's emphasis on the physical or social aspects of care, and the interrelationships and complementary values that lead to students' appreciation of each other's roles and the possibility for their future collaboration in the holistic care of patients. Relevance to clinical practice., The sharing of each other's knowledge and their appreciation of the corresponding roles enhanced students' decision-making capacity and the extension of the holistic approach beyond one profession, which is essential for good patient care.
