Selected AbstractsProfile: air quality regulation policy in PortugalENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AND GOVERNANCE, Issue 1 2004Joćo F. P. Gomes Ten years after the publication of the first air quality laws in Portugal, and seven years after the publication of the respective emission limits, it seems appropriate to analyse the degree of law enforcement by the Portuguese manufacturing industry. Therefore, based on the emission measurements made regularly by ISQ as the only officially accredited laboratory, a set of about 400 sources is analysed in terms of the compliance with the emission limits regarding total suspended particulate, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and VOCs. The compliance is evaluated through a non-dimensional parameter and plotted versus the emission flow rate to derive conclusions: it was noticed that emission limits are generally respected regarding sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which does not happen for the other pollutants considered in this study. However, the non-compliance occurs mainly for very low emission flow rates, which suggests some alterations in the emission limits' applicability, which is being revised at the moment. [source] Effects of exposure to oxamyl, carbofuran, dichlorvos, and lindane on acetylcholinesterase activity in the gills of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigasENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY, Issue 4 2010Gerardo A. Anguiano Abstract Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity has been used to test the exposure of mollusk bivalves to pesticides and other pollutants. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is a species with a worldwide distribution, and it has a high commercial value. The use of this species as a bioindicator in the marine environment, and the use of measurements of AChE activity in tissues of C. gigas require prior evaluation of organisms exposed to several toxic compounds in the laboratory. In our study, the effects of pesticides on AChE activity in the gills and mantle tissues of C. gigas were analyzed by exposing animals to organophosphate (dichlorvos), carbamate (carbofuran and oxamyl), and organochlorine (lindane) pesticides. Adult Pacific oysters were exposed to several concentrations (0.1,200 ,M) of dichlorvos, carbofuran, and oxamyl for 96 h, and lindane (1.0 and 2.5 ,M) was applied for 12 days. In gill tissues, all pesticides analyzed caused a decrease in AChE activity when compared to the control unexposed group. The mean inhibition concentration (IC50) values were determined for dichlorvos, carbofuran, and oxamyl pesticides. Dichlorvos had the highest toxic effect, with an IC50 of 1.08 ,M; lesser effects were caused by oxamyl and carbofuran, with IC50s of 1.67 and 3.03 ,M, respectively. This study reports the effects of pesticides with several chemical structures and validates measurement of AChE activity in the gill tissues of C. gigas for use in environmental evaluations or food quality tests. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] Genotoxicity in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) along a pollution gradient: Exposure-, age-, and gender-related effectsENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 8 2006Jan Scheirs Abstract We investigated the effects of environmental pollution on genetic damage in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) by means of the comet assay, with special attention to the role of age and gender as potential confounding variables. The present study was carried out at four sites along a pollution gradient in the vicinity of Antwerp (Belgium), with a nonferrous smelter as the main pollution source. We measured the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in mouse liver and kidney and the concentration of organochlorine compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p -chlorophenyl)ethylene) in mouse muscle tissue to assess individual exposure. Cadmium exposure was very high at the sites closest to the smelter, and exposure to this metal decreased with increasing distance from the smelter. Exposure to the other pollutants was low to moderate at the different sites. Genetic damage was higher in mice from populations in the vicinity of the nonferrous smelter compared with that in the control populations. A significant increase in genetic damage with age was observed at the most polluted sites, but not at the control sites. Genetic damage was higher in male mice than in female mice at the most polluted site, but not at the other areas. Yet, no obvious relationship was found between individual pollutant levels and individual genetic damage levels. We conclude that the comet assay can be used to compare genotoxicity at the population level if the confounding variables of gender and age are taken into account. However, its use for individual health risk assessment remains questionable. [source] Effect of copper on hatching and development of larvae of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Decapoda, Brachyura)ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, Issue 7 2001Valeria Zapata Abstract Ovigerous females of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata were exposed to 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 3 mg/L of copper during the egg incubation period. Regarding egg loss, a higher effect was observed at higher copper concentrations: 80% of the females lost their eggs at 0.5 mg/L, whereas no hatching was seen in those exposed to 3 mg/L. A significant decrease was found in the number of hatched larvae in females exposed to 0.5 mg/L, as was a significant decrease in the duration of the incubation period. In addition, several morphological abnormalities were seen and observed. Hydropsy and atrophy of the dorsal spine, pleon, and maxillipeds occurred at the higher copper concentrations, as found in previous studies with other pollutants. Hyperpigmentation of the cephalothorax and pleon was the only abnormality observed at every concentration assayed. Hypopigmented eyes were also evident. This pathology showed that among all defects observed at 0.5 mg/L, hypopigmented eyes had the highest incidence and might be a specific response to copper. [source] The meta-analysis of the Italian studies on short-term effects of air pollution (MISA): old and new issues on the interpretation of the statistical evidencesENVIRONMETRICS, Issue 3 2007Pierantonio Bellini Abstract The second meta-analysis of the Italian studies on short-term health effects of air pollution, known as MISA-2, was based on daily time series of indicators of both pollution and of health outcomes. It covered 15 cities during 1996,2002 for a total population of approximately nine millions. Health outcomes included mortality for natural causes, for respiratory diseases and for cardiovascular conditions, as well as hospital admissions for respiratory, cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases. Pollutants considered in univariate analyses were sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), suspended particulate matter (SPM) measuring less than 10,µm diameter (PM10) and ozone (O3, limited to the summer period). Results, including risk estimates, have been largely confirmatory of findings obtained in previous large meta-analytic studies carried out in North America and in Europe. A full report in Italian is available. The present contribution summarises the results of MISA-2 and addresses three major issues regarding their interpretation: robustness of the causal inferential process, the role of specific air pollutants and the reliability of risk estimates. The former issue is stressed according to Bradford Hill's criteria and the conclusion is reached that at least for the association of air pollution with an increase in mortality the evidence for causality is strong. Assessing the role of each air pollutant is problematic: there is some evidence that the effects of PM10 are partly confounded by other pollutants, but PM10 may not be the best indicator of the role of air SPM (routine measures of PM2.5 have not been introduced in Italy). As for risk estimates, the per cent increase in risk of mortality for unit increase in PM10 concentration, measured in MISA-2, is remarkably similar to estimates in other studies and there is indication for linearity of the dose,response relationship. [source] The molecular composition of soil organic matter as determined by 13C NMR and elemental analyses and correlation with pesticide sorptionEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 6 2006R. Ahmad Summary Although the chemical composition of soil organic matter (SOM) is known to significantly influence sorption of pesticides and other pollutants, it has been difficult to determine the molecular nature of SOM in situ. Here, using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data and elemental composition in a molecular mixing model, we estimated the molecular components of SOM in 24 soils from various agro-ecological regions. Substantial variations were revealed in the molecular nature of SOM. As a proportion of soil carbon the proportion of the carbonyl component ranged from 0.006 to 0.05, charcoal from 0 to 0.15, protein from 0.09 to 0.29, aliphatic from 0.14 to 0.30, carbohydrate from 0.21 to 0.31, and lignin from 0.05 to 0.42. The relationships between Koc (sorption per unit mass of organic carbon) of carbaryl (1-naphthyl methylcarbamate) and phosalone (S- 6-chloro-2,3-dihydro-2-oxobenzoxazol-3-ylmethyl O,O -diethyl phosphorodithioate) and the molecular nature of organic matter in the soils were significant. Of the molecular components estimated, lignin and charcoal contents correlated best with sorption of carbaryl and phosalone. Aliphatic, carbohydrate and protein contents were found to be negatively correlated with the Koc of both pesticides. The study highlights the importance of the molecular nature of SOM in determining sorption affinities of non-ionic pesticides and presents an indirect method for sorption estimation of pesticides. [source] Non-equilibrium water flow characterized by means of upward infiltration experimentsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2001Summary Upward infiltration experiments under tension were used to demonstrate the presence of non-equilibrium flow in soils, the phenomenon that has important implications for the accelerated movement of fertilizers, pesticides, non-aqueous liquids, and other pollutants. Data obtained from these experiments were analysed using the single-porosity Richards equation, as well as a variably saturated, dual-porosity model and a dual-permeability model for characterizing non-equilibrium water flow. The laboratory experiments were carried out on 0.10-m-long soil cores having an internal diameter of 0.10 m. Constant pressure heads of ,0.10 and ,0.01 m were used as the lower boundary condition. Each infiltration was followed by a single-rate evaporation experiment to re-establish initial conditions, and to obtain the drying soil hydraulic properties. Pressure heads inside the cores were measured using five tensiometers, while evaporative water loss from the top was determined by weighing the soil samples. The data were analysed to estimate parameters using a technique that combined a numerical solution of the governing flow equation (as implemented in a modified version of the Hydrus-1D software) with a Marquardt,Levenberg optimization. The objective function for the parameter estimation was defined in terms of pressure head readings, the cumulative infiltration rate, and the final total water volume in the core during upward infiltration. The final total water volume was used, as well as the pressure head readings during the evaporation part. Analysis of flow responses obtained during the infiltration experiment demonstrated significant non-equilibrium flow. This behaviour could be well characterized using a model of physical non-equilibrium that divides the medium into inter- and intra-aggregate pores with first-order transfer of water between the two systems. The analysis also demonstrated the importance of hysteresis. [source] Validation of a vegetated filter strip model (VFSMOD)HYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 5 2001Dr Majed Abu-Zreig Abstract Vegetated filter strips (VFS) are designed to reduce sediment load and other pollutants into water bodies. However, adaptation of VFS in the field has been limited owing to lack of data about their efficiency and performance under natural field conditions. A number of models are available that simulate sediment transport and trapping in VFS, but there is a general lack of confidence in VFS models owing to limited validation studies and model limitations that prevent correct application of these models under field conditions. The objective of this study is to test and validate a process-based model (VFSMOD) that simulates sediment trapping in VFS. This model links three submodels: modified Green,Ampt's infiltration, Quadratic overland flow submodel based on kinematic wave approximation and University of Kentucky sediment filtration model. A total of 20 VFS, 2, 5, 10 and 15 m long and with various vegetation covers, were tested under simulated sediment and runoff conditions. The results of these field experiments were used to validate the VFS model. The model requires 25 input parameters distributed over five input files. All input parameters were either measured or calculated using experimental data. The observed sediment trapping efficiencies varied from 65% in the 2-m long VFS to 92% in the 10-m long filters. No increase in sediment removal efficiency was observed at higher VFS length. Application of the VFS model to experimental data was satisfactory under the condition that actual flow widths are used in the model instead of the total filter width. Predicted and observed sediment trapping efficiencies and infiltration volume fitted very well, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0·9 and 0·95, respectively. Regression analyses revealed that the slope and intercept of the regression lines between predicted versus observed infiltration volume and trapping efficiency were not significantly different than the line of perfect agreement with a slope of 1·0 and intercept of 0·0. Mųlhave Abstract The most important indoor air pollutants have already been addressed with individual national guidelines or recommendations. However, an international set of guidelines or recommendations for indoor air quality (IAQ) is needed for these pollutants based on general and uniform rules for setting such standards. A major research need exist on the less adverse pollutants before recommendations or guidelines can be established. In the interim period a precaution principle should lead to an ALARA principle for these secondary causalities. It should be noted that volatile organic compound (VOC) as an IAQ problem still is in the end of a phase of ad hoc solutions, in the middle of a research phase and only in the beginning of a regulatory phase. Any final official regulation in this area will have to be tentative and the final regulation must await further research. Total volatile organic compound (TVOC) is an indicator for the presence of VOC indoors. The TVOC indicator can be used in relation to exposure characterization and source identification but for VOCs only, not as an indictor of other pollutants and their health effects. In risk assessment the TVOC indicator can only be used as a screening tool and only for sensory irritation. [source] Residential energy consumption patterns: the case of LebanonINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 8 2005Ahmad Houri Abstract In an attempt to fill a significant gap in baseline information, 509 households have been studied to analyse the residential consumption patterns in the urban environment in Lebanon. The average annual household energy consumption has been found to be 6907 kWh, whereas per capita consumption is 1727 kWh. Seasonal and monthly variations are analysed indicating increased energy consumption in the summer months accounting for 28% of total annual consumption. Correlations are indicated for energy consumption with apartment price, area, income and number of residents. Multiple regression analysis indicated statistical significance of income, area and number of residents to the energy consumption. Based on current consumption and electricity generating technologies, 1.6 tons of CO2, 7.3 kg of SO2 in addition to other pollutants are generated per resident. Comparative analysis indicates that Lebanon has electricity consumption similar to that of Western Europe, paving the way for significant energy saving potential. Sousa Background:, It is well documented that high levels of many airborne pollutants can adversely affect many systems of the human body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the specific impact of ozone (O3) on the worsening of childhood asthma, comparing children living at regions with high and low O3 concentrations (reference site) without the confounding effects of other pollutants. Methods:, Pollutant concentrations were monitored and data concerning asthma prevalence were collected through a questionnaire. The studied population consisted of 478 children aged 6,13 years old enrolled in four schools of the municipalities where monitoring was performed. Remote sites were identified with very low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds and high concentrations of O3. Results:, The prevalence of wheeze for lifetime period and in the past year was 15.9% and 6.3%, respectively. Asthmatic children were identified when dyspnoea and wheezing were simultaneously mentioned in the absence of upper respiratory infections; according to that, the lifetime prevalence of asthmatic symptoms at the remote sites was 7.1%. The comparison with other previous studies was difficult because the criteria for analysis are not conveniently established. Conclusion:, The prevalence of childhood asthmatic symptoms was about 4% higher at the high O3 site than at the low O3 site. [source] |
