Selected AbstractsHistology, histochemistry and morphometry of the ovary of the adult plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus) in different reproductive stagesACTA ZOOLOGICA, Issue 4 2009Mirta Alicia Flamini Abstract Lagostomus maximus is a South American Hystricognathi rodent whose reproductive behaviour shows characteristics unusual for mammals, such as polyovulation (200,800 oocytes) and a high rate of embryo mortality. Thirty-six mature females captured in the province of Buenos Aires showed different physiological reproductive stages. Most of them presented a postpartum oestrus in August,September. This characteristic is different from that reported in other geographical areas. The stages considered were: anoestrus, follicular phase, early pregnancy and late pregnancy. The ovaries were light-pink and smooth and presented a tortuous cord-like aspect. Many primordial follicles were found in all the females studied. Follicles in different states of maturation and primary and accessory corpora lutea were observed in the cortex. These structures were smaller than those present in other related species. Follicles did not project into the surface of the organ. Calcified follicles of diverse size were found in all the ovaries. Atretic follicles were found in all the stages analysed. Interstitial tissue surrounding the follicles and the corpora lutea was also observed. The number and proportion of different cortical structures varied in the physiological stages analysed. The ovaries of the viscacha have differential characteristics in comparison to other Hystricognathi, some of them related to polyovulation. QUIST Abstract, Fisheries research and management in North America have focused largely on sport fishes, but native non-game fishes have attracted increased attention due to their declines. The Warmwater Stream Assessment (WSA) was developed to evaluate simultaneously both fish and habitat in Wyoming streams by a process that includes three major components: (1) stream-reach selection and accumulation of existing information, (2) fish and habitat sampling and (3) summarisation and evaluation of fish and habitat information. Fish are sampled by electric fishing or seining and habitat is measured at reach and channel-unit (i.e. pool, run, riffle, side channel, or backwater) scales. Fish and habitat data are subsequently summarised using a data-matrix approach. Hierarchical decision trees are used to assess critical habitat requirements for each fish species expected or found in the reach. Combined measurements of available habitat and the ecology of individual species contribute to the evaluation of the observed fish assemblage. The WSA incorporates knowledge of the fish assemblage and habitat features to enable inferences of factors likely influencing both the fish assemblage and their habitat. The WSA was developed for warmwater streams in Wyoming, but its philosophy, process and conceptual basis may be applied to environmental assessments in other geographical areas. [source] Evidence for Increased Clinical Severity of Familial and Sporadic Paget's Disease of Bone in Campania, Southern Italy,JOURNAL OF BONE AND MINERAL RESEARCH, Issue 12 2006Domenico Rendina Abstract The analysis of 236 Italian patients with Paget's bone disease showed higher clinical severity and greater frequency of neoplastic degeneration among patients who live or descend from individuals living in the Campania region (southern Italy). A prevalent involvement of the spine and the skull, the sites preferentially involved in giant cell tumors complicating Paget's disease, was also shown in familial cases from this geographical region. Introduction: The Campania region in southern Italy has been recently indicated as a high prevalence area for Paget's disease of bone (PDB), and most pagetic families with multiple occurrence of neoplasms in affected members were from this geographical region. Materials and Methods: We evaluated the PDB epidemiological characteristics in 125 patients from Campania in comparison with 111 patients from other Italian regions. Twenty-three patients from Campania and 26 patients from other Italian areas had at least one first-degree relative affected by PDB (familial cases). The remaining patients made up the sporadic cases. Results: Among subjects from Campania, the patients in the familial group tended to come from larger families and showed at diagnosis higher serum total alkaline phosphatase, larger extension of disease, and earlier mean age with respect to patients with PDB of the sporadic group. The skull, spine, and humerus were the sites preferentially involved in the familial cases. In contrast, no such differences were observed between familial and sporadic PDB cases among patients from the other geographical areas, except for a lower age at diagnosis. An increased PDB clinical severity was finally observed in the PDB cohort from Campania in comparison with patients from other Italian regions. Neoplastic degeneration of pagetic bones (osteosarcoma and giant cell tumor) was exclusively observed in patients with polyostotic PDB from Campania. Conclusions: We showed a higher clinical severity of PDB with occurrence of neoplastic degeneration in the high prevalence area of Campania, with its maximum expression in cases with familial disease. This peculiar pattern might be traced to genetic predisposition and/or to the abnormal impact of a still undefined environmental trigger. [source] Molecular epidemiology of molluscum contagiosum virus and analysis of the host-serum antibody response in Spanish HIV-negative patientsJOURNAL OF MEDICAL VIROLOGY, Issue 2 2002Monica Agromayor Abstract Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) lesions from Spanish human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative patients were clinically examined and analyzed for virus detection and typing. In a study of 147 patients, 97 (66%) were children under 10 years, of whom 49% had atopic dermatitis. MCV lesions were morphologically indistinguishable among the different age groups, but atopic patients presented larger lesions compared with patients without the disorder. In adults, lesions were observed mainly on the genitals. MCVI was the predominant subtype. The deduced MCVI/MCVII ratio (146:1) was much higher than that found in other geographical areas. Protein preparations of the virus-induced lesions were immunoblotted with sera from 25 MCVI patients. The host-serum antibody response was weak and variable, although no significant differences were found between atopic and nonatopic patients. Three immunoreactive proteins of 74/80, 60, and 35 kDa were detected in almost all the analyzed sera. The 35 and 74/80-kDa proteins were virus specific, whereas the 60-kDa protein band was composed of a mix of human keratins. Immunoblotting of MCV lesions and vaccinia virus-infected cell extracts with either MCV patient serum or a rabbit antiserum against vaccinia virus showed no cross-reactivity of these two human poxviruses at the antigenic level.
