Comparing trophic position of stream fishes using stable isotope and gut contents analyses

Abstract,,, Stable isotope analysis (SIA) and gut contents analysis (GCA) are commonly used in food web studies, but few studies analyse these data in concert. We used SIA (,15N) and GCA (% composition) to identify diets and trophic position (TP) of six stream fishes and to compare TP estimates between methods. Ordination analysis of gut contents identified two primary trophic groups, omnivores and predators. Significant differences in TPGCA and TPSIA were similar in direction among-species and among-trophic groups; neither method detected seasonal changes in omnivore diets. Within-species TPGCA and TPSIA were similar except for one omnivore. TPGCA was less variable than TPSIA for predators, but variation between methods was similar for omnivores. While both methods were equally robust at discriminating trophic groups of fishes, TPSIA is less laborious to estimate and may facilitate cross-stream comparisons of food web structure and energy flow. Blowfly succession from possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) carrion in a sheep-farming zone

Abstract The significance of brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula Kerr (Diprotodontia: Phalangeridae) carcasses to the succession and production of Diptera species and its relevance to fly strike management in Tasmania, Australia was examined. Calliphora stygia (Fabricius), Lucilia sericata (Meigen) and Calliphora vicina Robineau,Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were found to be the most abundant and Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) always the least abundant (< 1%) of the putative primary fly invading species to emerge. Carcasses that were left for up to 15 days in the field before being exposed to flies for 2 days also acted as breeding sites for large numbers of all primary fly species, with the exception of L. cuprina. Ordination analysis revealed no relationship between possum carcasses according to their length of exposure but did show significant negative associations between the number of putative secondary invaders (Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), Chrysomya varipes (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and putative tertiary flies (Hydrotaea rostrata Robineau,Desvoidy (Diptera: Muscidae)) to the number of C. vicina or C. stygia to emerge. There was enormous variability in the numbers of secondary/tertiary fly species to emerge from carcasses (0,11 450) that negatively correlated with the proportion of all flies to emerge that were primary, and with the mean size of adult L. sericata. Although carcass temperatures, especially those with a large larval population, were elevated, this did not appear to result in significant pre-adult fly mortality. The most important primary fly strike species L. cuprina was only found in insignificant numbers, whereas three other members of the fly strike fauna C. stygia, L. sericata and Ch. rufifacies did use possum carrion as an important breeding resource, but left implications for fly strike management inconclusive. Determinants of assemblage structure in Neotropical dry forest lizards

Abstract We investigated the structure of a lizard assemblage from Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest enclaves in the Brazilian Cerrado biome, by testing the roles of ecological and historical components. We analysed data from 469 individuals, belonging to 18 lizard species, sampled by a combination of pitfall, funnel and glue traps, as well as by haphazard sampling. Null model analyses and Canonical Phylogenetic Ordination analysis, coupled with Monte Carlo simulations, revealed lack of both ecological and phylogenetic structure in microhabitat use. Conversely, these analyses revealed a mean overlap in diet composition significantly smaller than expected by chance and significant historical structure. Structure in diet composition was due to phylogenetic effects corresponding to the most basal divergence of the squamate phylogeny (Iguania/Scleroglossa) and the clades Teiidae and Gymnophthalmidae. Among lizards, evolutionary constraints on microhabitat use appear less than on prey use, suggesting that the availability of historically preferred prey types moderates microhabitat selection. The lack of structure in microhabitat use suggests absence of competitive interactions on the spatial component. On the other hand, food preferences have a deep historical basis and do not reflect current competitive interactions. [source]


The role of oceanographic conditions and plankton availability in larval fish assemblages off the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean)

Abstract In the northwestern Mediterranean, most fish species reproduce in early summer and fewer in the autumn mixing period. This study analyses and compares larval fish assemblages (LFA) in both seasons, and is the first attempt to characterize LFA structure for the autumn period. We analyze horizontal and vertical distribution of fish larvae and the micro- and mesozooplankton biomass and abundance of the main zooplankton groups. The oceanographic situation was analyzed through the study of data from CTD, N,-Shuttle and ADCP surveys. LFA were determined by ordination analyses based on larval abundance, and the relationships between larval assemblages and environmental variables were investigated through canonical correspondence analysis. The importance of some hydrographic variables (temperature, salinity and stability of the water column), current fields (along-shelf and across-shelf transport) and the abundance of zooplankton are discussed as important factors shaping the structure of larval assemblages. In early summer, LFA were mainly structured by a combination of bathymetry and trophic components, although sea surface temperature also played a role in shaping the horizontal larval distributions. In autumn, trophic variables were the main factors influencing the shelf-dwelling species assemblage. Larvae of oceanic species, on the other hand, were not related to trophic variables but were more affected by current fields. [source]


Spatial patterns and environmental factors affecting the presence of Melampsorella caryophyllacearum infections in an Abies alba forest in NE Spain

Summary The presence of trunk swellings caused by the rust fungus Melampsorella caryophyllacearum was systematically surveyed in an Abies alba forest (Irati, NE Spain), using 1237 circular plots (diameter = 18 m). The relationship between fungal presence and several abiotic (aspect, elevation, distance to the nearest river and slope) and biotic factors (basal area of A. alba and/or Fagus sylvatica, shrub, fern and herb cover) was assessed through correlation and ordination analyses. Additionally, the spatial pattern of the presence of diseased trees was described using Ripley's K function. Southern-aspect plots had a significantly lower presence of diseased trees than plots-oriented north, east and west. Plots with diseased trees were located at a significantly lower elevation, and at a shorter distance to the river than plots without infections. Plots with diseased trees had almost twice the average A. alba basal area, and less average F. sylvatica basal area than plots without diseased trees. However, similar mean values of slope and shrub, fern and herb cover were found in both types of plots. The disease showed spatial aggregation in patches with a mean radius of ca. 900 m. The implications of the results for disease management are discussed. Résumé La présence de renflements sur les troncs causés par l'agent de la rouille, Melampsorella caryophyllacearum, a étéétudiée de façon systématique dans une forêt d'Abies alba (Irati, NE Espagne), en utilizant 1237 placettes circulaires (diamètre de 18 m). Les relations entre la présence du champignon et divers facteurs abiotiques (orientation, altitude, distance à la rivière la plus proche, pente) et biotiques ( surface terrière de A. alba et/ou Fagus sylvatica, abondance de la couverture herbacée et abondance d'arbustes et fougères) ont étéétudiées par analyses de corrélation et d'ordination. D'autre part, la structure spatiale de la présence d'arbres infectés a été décrite en utilizant la fonction K de Ripley. Les placettes exposées au sud présentent moins fréquemment des arbres malades que celles exposées au nord, à l'est ou à l'ouest. Les placettes avec des arbres malades sont situées à une altitude significativement plus faible et à une distance plus faible d'une rivière que les placettes sans infections, et elles présentent une surface terrière 2 fois plus forte en moyenne pour A. alba, et plus faible pour F. sylvatica, que les placettes non-infectées. Toutefois, des valeurs moyennes équivalentes pour la pente, la couverture herbacée et l'abondance d'arbustes et fougères, sont observées pour les deux types de placettes. La maladie montre une agrégation spatiale en foyers d'un rayon moyen de 900 m. Les résultats sont discutés dans une perspective de gestion de la maladie. Die Beziehung zwischen dem Pilzvorkommen und mehreren abiotischen (Exposition, Meereshöhe, Distanz zum nächsten Fluss, Hangneigung) und biotischen Faktoren (Deckungsgrad von A. alba und/oder Fagus sylvatica, Strauch-, Farn- und Krautschicht) wurden durch Korrelations- und Ordinations-Analysen überprüft. Zudem wurden räumliche Muster der befallenen Bäume mit Hilfe von Ripley's K-Funktion beschrieben. In südexponierten Probeflächen kamen signifikant weniger erkrankte Bäume vor als in nach Norden, Osten und Westen orientierten Standorten. Flächen mit Befall lagen in signifikant geringerer Meereshöhe und kürzerer Distanz zum nächsten Fluss als solche ohne Befall. Zudem hatten sie beinahe die doppelte Basalfläche mit A. alba und eine durchschnittliche geringere Basalfläche mit F. sylvatica. Die durchschnittlichen Werte für die Strauch-, Farn- und Krautschicht sowie die Hangneigung unterschieden sich jedoch nicht in den Flächen mit und ohne Befall. Erkrankte Bäume waren räumlich aggregiert mit einem mittleren Radius von ca. 900 m. Die Bedeutung dieser Befunde für das Krankheitsmanagement wird diskutiert. [source]


A new European testate amoebae transfer function for palaeohydrological reconstruction on ombrotrophic peatlands,

Abstract Proxy climate data can be obtained from reconstructions of hydrological changes on ombrotrophic (rain-fed) peatlands using biological indicators, such as testate amoebae. Reconstructions are based on transfer functions, relating modern assemblage composition to water table and moisture content, applied to fossil sequences. Existing transfer functions in Europe and elsewhere are limited geographically and there are often problems with missing or poor analogues. This paper presents a new palaeohydrological transfer function based on sampling raised mires from across Europe. Relationships between assemblages and hydrological variables are described using ordination analyses. Transfer functions are developed for depth to water table (n,=,119) and moisture content (n,=,132) with root mean squared errors (RMSEP) of 5.6,cm and 2.7% respectively. Both transfer functions have an r2 of 0.71, based on ,leave one out' cross-validation. Comparisons with an existing transfer function for Britain show that the European transfer function performs well in inferring measured water tables in Britain but that the British data cannot be used to infer water tables for other European sites with confidence. Several of the key missing and poor analogue taxa problems encountered in previous transfer functions are solved. Landscape context and microenvironment influences on liana communities within treefall gaps

Abstract Questions: How do gap aspect, openness, age and gap density in the surroundings affect diversity and composition of lianas within treefall gaps? Are the variation patterns in liana communities within treefall gaps associated with their climbing mechanisms? Location: Subtropical montane forests in northwestern Argentina. Methods: We used ordination analyses (NMDS) and multiple regressions to describe liana communities (species and climbing groups, stems , 1 cm) in 35 gaps located in a 6-ha plot and to assess relationships with aspect, canopy and subcanopy openness, age and density of recent (three to eight years old) and old (> 8 years old) gaps. Results: Treefall gaps segregated in the ordination diagrams based on their liana species and climbing mechanisms composition: gaps surrounded by a higher density of recent gaps showed higher densities of lianas species using tendrils, spines/hooks and voluble stems. Liana density and richness (independent of stem density) were also positively associated with the density of recent gaps in the surroundings, and negatively associated to gap age. The number of liana species corrected per area was negatively associated to gap aspect and subcanopy openness, and absolute number of liana species was positively associated to gap canopy openness. Conclusions: This study integrates the analysis of different factors influencing liana communities within treefall gaps, and shows that spatial context of gap density (a variable largely neglected in previous studies) is particularly important on lianas composition and diversity, probably by increasing propagule input and the availability of small trellises for support. Long-term post-fire changes in the northeastern boreal forest of Quebec

Abstract. Natural dynamics in the boreal forest is influenced by disturbances. Fire recurrence affects community development and landscape diversity. Forest development was studied in the northeastern boreal forest of Quebec. The objective was to describe succession following fire and to assess the factors related to the changes in forest composition and structure. The study area is located in northeastern Quebec, 50 km north of Baie-Comeau. We used the forest inventory data gathered by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ). In circular plots of 400 m2, the diameter at breast height (DBH) of all stems of tree species greater than 10 cm was recorded and in 40 m2 subplots, stems smaller than 10 cm were measured. A total of 380 plots were sampled in an area of 6000 km2. The fire history reconstruction was done based on historical maps, old aerial photographs and field sampling. A time-since-fire class, a deposit type, slope, slope aspect and altitude were attributed to each plot. Each plot was also described according to species richness and size structure characteristics. Traces of recent disturbance were also recorded in each plot. Changes in forest composition were described using ordination analyses (NMDS and CCA) and correlated with the explanatory variables. Two successional pathways were observed in the area and characterized by the early dominance of intolerant hardwood species or Picea mariana. With time elapsed since the last fire, composition converged towards either Picea mariana, Abies balsamea or a mixture of both species and the size structure of the coniferous dominated stands got more irregular. The environmental conditions varied between stands and explained part of the variability in composition. Their effect tended to decrease with increasing time elapsed since fire, as canopy composition was getting more similar. Gaps may be important to control forest dynamics in old successional communities. [source]


Climatic signals in tree-rings of Araucaria angustifolia in the southern Brazilian highlands

Abstract Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) O. Kuntze (Araucariaceae) is a Neotropical tree, widely distributed in subtropical mountain rain forests and nearby natural grasslands of Southern Brazil. This species produces annual growth rings, but its dendroclimatic potential is barely known. In the present paper, the long-term growth patterns of A. angustifolia were investigated using annual growth ring time series and association to climate over the last century. Wood cores of A. angustifolia trees growing in forest and grassland habitats were obtained with an increment borer. The cores were surfaced, measured and cross-dated. The dated ring-width time series were standardized and submitted to correlation and principal component analysis to verify growth trends among sites and trees. Growth-climate relationships were investigated using correlation and regression analyses, comparing the ordination axes scores to regional time series of precipitation and temperature. Due to anatomical irregularities, mainly partial rings, only 35 out of 60 trees were cross-dated. The correlation and ordination analyses showed common tree-growth trends within and between sites, indicative of a regional environmental force determining inter-annual cambial activity variation. Despite growing in distinct habitats and disturbance regimes, A. angustifolia trees share a common long-term growth pattern, which is significantly related to thermal conditions during the current and previous growing seasons. Moreover, site-specific characteristics may have influenced opposite growth responses and association to climate conditions between forest and grassland trees. [source]


Demographic and life-history correlates for Amazonian trees

Abstract Questions: Which demographic and life-history differences are found among 95 sympatric tree species? Are there correlations among demographic parameters within this assemblage? Location: Central Amazonian rain forest. Methods: Using long-term data from 24 1,ha permanent plots, eight characteristics were estimated for each species: wood density, annual mortality rate, annual recruitment rate, mean stem diameter, maximum stem diameter, mean stem-growth rate, maximum stem-growth rate, population density. Results: An ordination analysis revealed that tree characteristics varied along two major axes of variation, the major gradient expressing light requirements and successional status, and the second gradient related to tree size. Along these gradients, four relatively discrete tree guilds could be distinguished: fast-growing pioneer species, shade-tolerant sub-canopy species, canopy trees, and emergent species. Pioneers were uncommon and most trees were canopy or emergent species, which frequently had low mortality and recruitment. Wood density was negatively associated with tree mortality, recruitment, and growth rates when all species were considered. Growth rates varied markedly among and within species, with pioneers exhibiting far faster and less variable growth rates than did the other species. Slow growth in subcanopy species relative to canopy and emergent trees was not a simple consequence of mean tree size, but apparently resulted from physiological constraints imposed by low-light and other conditions in the forest understorey. Conclusions: Trees of Amazonian rain forests could be classified with some success into four relatively distinctive guilds. However, several demographic and life-history traits, such as those that distinguish early and late successional species, probably vary along a continuum, rather than being naturally grouped into relatively discrete categories. The impact of changing olive cultivation practices on the ground flora of olive groves in the Messara and Psiloritis regions, Crete, Greece

Abstract This paper examines the impact that different olive cultivation practices have on the nature of the ground flora of olive groves in the region of the Psiloritis massif and Messara Plain in central and southern Crete, Greece. In lower, flatter areas there are areas of both traditional and intensive forms of olive cultivation. In more marginal, upland areas there are traditional terraced olive groves, some of which are being abandoned. The relationship between the vegetation composition of the ground flora and environmental variables was established, by means of TWINSPAN® and ordination analysis, using survey data from nineteen sites across the region. Four vegetation communities are identified: olive with herbaceous taxa; olive with sclerophyllous shrub taxa; and two forms of sclerophyllous shrub communities. Ordination results indicate that environmental variables, such as soil characteristics, slope aspect and slope angle, explain about 60,per,cent of the species,environment relationships. The remaining variation in species composition is interpreted to be the result of different cultivation practices. The implications for land degradation are examined, in particular the changes in vegetation diversity of both intensive and semi-abandoned olive groves, the potential for increased soil erosion, and the risk of fire as a result of increased fuel loading as flammable shrubs invade abandoned terraces. Intensification of olive cultivation in Crete, and across the Mediterranean, has been encouraged by subsidies from the European Union leading to rapid landscape change. Thus there is a need to monitor changes in olive cultivation practices both at the local scale, by means of ground-based fieldwork, and at landscape and regional scales, by means of remote sensing. Using biological traits to assess how urbanization filters plant species of small woodlands

Abstract Question: Which biological traits (persistence, regeneration, dispersion traits and resource requirements) may explain the distribution of woodland flora along an urban,rural gradient? Location: The study was carried out in three medium-sized conurbations of north-western France: Angers, Nantes and Rennes. Methods: We sampled the vegetation of 36 small woodlands of about 1.5 ha composed of non-planted vegetation along an urban,rural gradient. We characterized the position of woodlands along the urban,rural gradient by examining adjacent land cover. By using an ordination analysis (RLQ), we analysed which traits out of ,23 tested were related to the contrasted distribution of species along the urban,rural gradient. Results: Species that are more likely to be found in urban woodlands than rural woodlands have different persistence traits (higher specific leaf area, more often rosette or semi-rosette form, less underground vegetative multiplication), resource requirements (affinity for base-rich and fertile soils) and regeneration traits (short life-span). Dispersion traits were not related to the distribution of species along the urban,rural gradient. Conclusions: Our approach identifies traits that can help to determine the vulnerability of forest species as a result of the environmental changes that follow urbanization. Limiting the influence of the urban environment on habitat quality (particularly disturbance and soil enrichment) is likely to be of major importance in maintaining the plant biodiversity in woodlands. Phenetic analysis of the Mexican midland pinyon pines, Pinus cembroides and Pinus johannis

This account presents an analysis of allopatric, sympatric and juxtaposed populations of the pinyon pines, Pinus cembroides Zucc. and P. johannis M.-F. Robert, based on phenetic analysis of morphological data, and draws on a comparison and differentiation of P. culminicola Andresen & Beaman. A qualitative and quantitative database for populations has been assembled and used for a cluster and ordination analysis using NTSYS. It was found that individual populations of the taxa were distinguishable. The emergence of morphological intermediate populations between P. cembroides and P. johannis was confirmed. The pattern of variation inP. johannis was found to be discrete, showing three geographical groups. The phenetic similarity betweenP. johannis from Zacatecas and P. johannis from San Luis Potosi and Queretaro was lower than that of P. johannis from Zacatecas and P. culminicola from Nuevo Leon. The following traits distinguish P. cembroides and the other two species: colour and fertility of seeds; cone shape; colour and width of needles; physiognomy; seed dimensions. This last trait can be used to distinguish three subgroups of pines with white endosperm in the northern, central and southern regions of the Mexican highlands. [source]
