    Exploring potential associations of suicidal ideation and ideas of self-harm in patients with congestive heart failure

    Abstract Objective: To determine the factors, which are associated with suicidal ideation and ideas of self-harm in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Methods: We examined 294 patients with documented CHF, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class II-IV, in a cross sectional study at three cardiac outpatient departments. Measures included self-reports of suicidal ideation and self-harm (PHQ-9), depression (SCID), health-related quality of life (SF-36), multimorbidity (CIRS-G), consumption of alcoholic beverages, as well as comprehensive clinical status. Data were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. Results: 50 patients (17.1%) reported experiencing suicidal ideation and/or ideas of self-harm on at least several days over the past two weeks. The final regression model revealed significant associations with health-related quality of life, physical component (odds ratio [OR] 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.35,0.91), and mental component (OR 0.50; 95% CI: 0.31,0.82), consumption of alcoholic beverages (OR 1.27; 95% CI: 1.05,1.54), first-episode depression (OR 3.92; 95% CI: 1.16,13.22), and lifetime depression (OR 10.89; 95% CI: 2.49,47.72). Age was only significant in the univariable (P=.03) regression analysis. NYHA functional class, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), etiology of CHF, medication, cardiovascular interventions, multimorbidity, gender, and living situation were not significantly associated with suicidal ideation or ideas of self-harm. Conclusions: Lifetime depression, in particular, increases the risk of suicidal ideation and ideas of self-harm in CHF patients. Furthermore, the findings of our study underline the necessity of differentiating between first-episode and lifetime depression in CHF-patients in future research and clinical practice.     Public employment and labour market performance

    Summary We explore the consequences of public employment for labour market performance. Theory suggests that public employment may not only crowd out private employment, but also increase overall unemployment if, by offering attractive working conditions, it draws additional individuals into the labour force. Empirical evidence from a sample of OECD countries in the 1960,2000 period suggests that, on average, creation of 100 public jobs may have eliminated about 150 private sector jobs, slightly decreased labour market participation, and increased by about 33 the number of unemployed workers. Theoretical considerations and empirical evidence, however, suggest that the crowding out effect of public jobs on private jobs is only significant in countries where public production is highly substitutable to private activities and the public sector offers more attractive wages and/or other benefits than the private labour market.     GENETIC STUDY: Heritability and a genome-wide linkage analysis of a Type II/B cluster construct for cannabis dependence in an American Indian community

    ABSTRACT Subtyping of substance dependence disorders holds promise for a number of important research areas including phenotyping for genetic studies, characterizing clinical course, and matching treatment and prevention strategies. This study sought to investigate whether a dichotomous construct similar to Babor's Types A/B and Cloninger's Types I/II for alcohol dependence can be identified for cannabis dependence in a Native American sample. In addition, heritability of this construct and its behavior in a genetic linkage analyses were evaluated. Information on cannabis use and dependence symptoms and other psychiatric disorders was obtained using the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism from a community sample of 606 American Indians. Hierarchical average linkage and K means cluster analysis was used, and a three-cluster solution was found to generate the best separation of variables. Ninety-one per cent of cannabis-dependent participants fell into one of the two subtypes: Type A/I cluster (n = 114, 56%) and Type B/II cluster (n = 70, 35%). Heritability (estimated using Sequential Oligogenic Linkage Analysis Routines) was only significant for the Type B/II cluster (h2 = 0.44, SE = 0.18, P < 0.01). Evidence for linkage was found for the Type B/II cluster (versus no diagnosis) on chromosome 16 [at 139 centimorgans (cM), Log of the Odds (LOD) score = 4.4], and on chromosome 19 (at 74 cM, LOD score = 6.4). Regions of interest for this phenotype (LOD > 1.5) were also located on chromosomes 14, 21, 22. These findings suggest that a Type B/II cannabis dependence phenotype can be identified in this population and that it is in part heritable and linked to areas of the genome identified previously for drug dependence phenotypes in this population as well as in other studies.     Leptin is associated with craving in females with alcoholism

    The appetite and weight regulating peptide leptin was associated recently with alcohol craving during withdrawal. Nevertheless, correlations were only significant with craving displayed on the visual analogue scale for maximum craving during the previous week (VAS), and not if assessed with the highly validated Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS). The objective of the following study, therefore, is to elucidate further the associations between the leptin system and craving concepts during alcohol withdrawal. A sufficiently large sample size should allow multiple statistical subgroup and confounder analyses. We prospectively investigated 102 chronic alcoholic inpatients (23 females, 79 males) during withdrawal on days 0 (admission), 1, 2 and days 7,-,10. In addition to the statistical analysis of the total sample, females and males were to be analysed separately. For detecting associations between leptin levels and craving scores multiple regression analysis was performed. Plasma leptin levels were determined, and craving for ethanol was assessed by both the OCDS and the VAS. Leptin plasma levels significantly increased during alcohol withdrawal compared to day 0, while all craving scores decreased. Body mass corrected leptin plasma levels predicted craving on day 0 in the OCDS total score (R ,=,0.55, F ,=,7.91, df,=,1.19, p ,<,0.05) and in the OCDS obsessive subscore (R ,=,0.57, F <,=,8.48, df,=,1.19, p ,<,0.05) in females. Neither in males nor in the total population did multiple regression analysis reveal any significant results. Leptin levels seem to change during inpatient alcohol withdrawal. In a multivariate model, correlations between leptin levels and the highly validated craving scores of the OCDS can only be assumed in females. Hence, gender differences have to be taken into account when searching for neurobiological models of alcohol craving. [source]


    Role of GABAergic neurones in the nucleus tractus solitarii in modulation of cardiovascular activity

    GABAergic neurones are interspersed throughout the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS), and their tonic activity is crucial to the maintenance of cardiorespiratory homeostasis. However, the mechanisms that regulate the magnitiude of GABAergic inhibition in the NTS remain unknown. We hypothesized that the level of GABAergic inhibition is proportionally regulated by the level of excitatory synaptic input to the NTS from baroreceptors. Using the in situ working heart,brainstem preparation in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats, we blocked GABAA receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the NTS with gabazine (a specific GABAA receptor antagonist) at two levels of perfusion pressure (low PP, 60,70 mmHg; and high PP, 105,125 mmHg) while monitoring the immediate changes in cardiorespiratory variables. In normotensive rats, gabazine produced an immediate bradycardia consistent with disinhibition of NTS circuit neurones that regulate heart rate (HR) which was proportional to the level of arterial pressure (,HR at low PP, ,57 ± 9 beats min,1; at high PP, ,177 ± 9 beats min,1; P < 0.001), suggesting that GABAergic circuitry in the NTS modulating heart rate was arterial pressure dependent. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the magnitude of gabazine-induced bradycardia in spontaneously hypertensive rats at low or high PP (,HR at low PP, ,45 ± 10 beats min,1; at high PP, ,58 ± 7 beats min,1). With regard to thoracic sympathetic nerve activity (tSNA), at high PP there was a significant reduction in tSNA during the inspiratory (I) phase of the respiratory cycle, but only in the normotensive rat (,,tSNA =,18.7 ± 10%). At low PP, gabazine caused an elevation of the postinspiration phase of tSNA in both normotensive (,,tSNA = 23.7 ± 2.9%) and hypertensive rats (,,tSNA = 44.2 ± 14%). At low PP, gabazine produced no change in tSNA during the mid-expiration phase in either rat strain, but at high PP we observed a significant reduction in the mid-expiration phase tSNA, but only in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (,,tSNA =,25.2 ± 8%). Gabazine at both low and high PP produced a reduction in the late expiration phase of tSNA in the hypertensive rat (low PP, ,,tSNA =,29.4 ± 4.4%; high PP, ,tSNA =,22.8 ± 3%), whereas in the normotensive rat this was only significant at high PP (,,tSNA =,42.5 ± 6.1%). Therefore, in the spontaneously hypertensive rat, contrary to the GABAA receptor-mediated control of HR, it appears that GABAA receptor-mediated control of tSNA in the NTS is arterial pressure dependent. This study provides new insight into the origin of GABAergic inhibition in NTS circuitry affecting heart rate and sympathetic activity. [source]


    Remote myocardium gene expression after 30 and 120 min of ischaemia in the rat

    The aim of the present study was to investigate how early the onset of ischaemia-induced changes in gene expression is in remote myocardium, and whether these changes would be different for left and right ventricles. Wistar rats (n= 27) were randomly assigned to left coronary artery (LCA) ligation for 30 or 120 min and sham groups. Evans Blue infusion revealed antero-apical left ventricle (LV) and left intraventricular (IV) septal ischaemia (35.5 ± 0.6% of LV mass). LCA ligation induced transient LV systolic dysfunction and sustained biventricular slowing of relaxation. Regarding mRNA levels, type B natriuretic peptide (BNP) was upregulated in the LV at 30 (+370 ± 191%) and 120 min (+221 ± 112%), whilst in the right ventricle (RV) this was only significant at 120 min (+128 ± 39%). Hipoxia-inducible factor 1, and interleukin 6 overexpression positively correlated with BNP. Inducible NO synthase upregulation was present in both ventricles at 120 min (LV, +327 ± 195%; RV, +311 ± 122%), but only in the RV at 30 min (+256 ± 88%). Insulin-like growth factor 1 increased in both ventricles at 30 (RV, +59 ± 18%; LV, +567 ± 192%) and 120 min (RV, +69 ± 33%; LV, +120 ± 24%). Prepro-endothelin-1 was upregulated in the RV at 120 min (+77 ± 25%). Ca2+ -handling proteins were selectively changed in the LV at 120 min (sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase, 53 ± 7%; phospholamban, +31 ± 4%; Na+,Ca2+ exchanger, 31 ± 6%), while Na+,H+ exchanger was altered only in the RV (,79 ± 5%, 30 min; +155 ± 70%, 120 min). Tumour necrosis factor-, and angiotensin converting enzyme were not significantly altered. A very rapid modulation of remote myocardium gene expression takes place during myocardial ischaemia, involving not only the LV but also the RV. These changes are different in the two ventricles and in the same direction as those observed in heart failure. [source]


    RhoA, encoding a Rho GTPase, is associated with smoking initiation

    We used microarray analysis of acute nicotine responses in mouse brain to choose rationale candidates for human association studies on tobacco smoking and nicotine dependence (ND). Microarray studies on the time,course of acute response to nicotine in mouse brain identified 95 genes regulated in ventral tegmental area. Among these, 30 genes were part of a gene network, with functions relevant to neural plasticity. On this basis and their known roles in drug abuse or synaptic plasticity, we chose the genes RhoA and Ywhag as candidates for human association studies. A synteny search identified human orthologs and we investigated their role in tobacco smoking and ND in a human case,control association study. We genotyped five and three single nucleotide polymorphisms from the RhoA and Ywhag genes, respectively. Both single marker and haplotype analyses were negative for the Ywhag gene. For the RhoA gene, rs2878298 showed highly significant genotypic association with both smoking initiation (SI) and ND (P = 0.00005 for SI and P = 0.0007 for ND). In the allelic analyses, rs2878298 was only significant for SI. In the multimarker haplotype analyses, significant association with SI was found for the RhoA gene (empirical global P values ranged from 9 × 10,5 to 10,5). In all multimarker combinations analyzed, with or without inclusion of the single most significant marker rs2878298, identical risk and protective haplotypes were identified. Our results indicated that the RhoA gene is likely involved in initiation of tobacco smoking and ND. Replication and future model system studies will be needed to validate the role of RhoA gene in SI and ND. [source]


    Myofascial Trigger Points, Neck Mobility, and Forward Head Posture in Episodic Tension-Type Headache

    Objective.,To assess the differences in the presence of trigger points (TrPs) in head and neck muscles, forward head posture (FHP) and neck mobility between episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) subjects and healthy controls. In addition, we assess the relationship between these muscle TrPs, FHP, neck mobility, and several clinical variables concerning the intensity and the temporal profile of headache. Background.,TTH is a headache in which musculoskeletal disorders of the craniocervical region might play an important role in its pathogenesis. Design.,A blinded, controlled pilot study. Methods.,Fifteen ETTH subjects and 15 matched controls without headache were studied. TrPs in both upper trapezius, both sternocleidomastoids, and both temporalis muscles were identified according to Simons and Gerwin diagnostic criteria (tenderness in a hypersensible spot within a palpable taut band, local twitch response elicited by snapping palpation, and elicited referred pain with palpation). Side-view pictures of each subject were taken in both sitting and standing positions, in order to assess FHP by measuring the craniovertebral angle. A cervical goniometer was employed to measure neck mobility. All measures were taken by a blinded assessor. A headache diary was kept for 4 weeks in order to assess headache intensity, frequency, and duration. Results.,The mean number of TrPs for each ETTH subject was 3.7 (SD: 1.3), of which 1.9 (SD: 0.9) were active, and 1.8 (SD: 0.9) were latent. Control subjects only had latent TrPs (mean: 1.5; SD: 1). TrP occurrence between the 2 groups was significantly different for active TrPs (P < .001), but not for latent TrPs (P > .05). Differences in the distribution of TrPs were significant for the right upper trapezius muscles (P= .04), the left sternocleidomastoid (P= .03), and both temporalis muscles (P < .001). Within the ETTH group, headache intensity, frequency, and duration outcomes did not differ depending on TrP activity, whether the TrP was active or latent. The craniovertebral angle was smaller, ie, there was a greater FHP, in ETTH patients than in healthy controls for both sitting and standing positions (P < .05). ETTH subjects with active TrPs in the analyzed muscles had a greater FHP than those with latent TrPs in both sitting and standing positions, though differences were only significant for certain muscles. Finally, ETTH patients also showed lesser neck mobility than healthy controls in the total range of motion as well as in half-cycles (except for cervical extension), although neck mobility did not seem to influence headache parameters. Conclusions.,Active TrPs in the upper trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and temporalis muscles were more common in ETTH subjects than in healthy controls, although TrP activity was not related to any clinical variable concerning the intensity and the temporal profile of headache. ETTH patients showed greater FHP and lesser neck mobility than healthy controls, although both disorders were not correlated with headache parameters. [source]


    Prognostic value of p27kip1 expression in adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head region

    Abstract Background. p27kip1 is a tumour suppressor gene, functioning as a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, and an independent prognostic factor in breast, colon, and prostate adenocarcinomas. Conflicting data are reported for adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. The aim of this study was to establish the prognostic value of p27kip1 expression in adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head region. Patients and methods. The study included 45 patients (male/female ratio 2:1; mean age 59, range 38,82 years) with adenocarcinomas of the pancreatic head region: 24 , pancreatic head, 18 , periampullary and 3 , uncinate process. The patients underwent the Kausch-Whipple pancreatoduodenectomy (n=39), pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (n=5), or nearly total pancreatectomy (n=1). Eight patients received adjuvant chemotherapy postoperatively. Follow-up time ranged from 3 to 60 months. Tumours were staged according to the pTNM classification (UICC 1997). Immunohistochemistry was done on paraffin-embedded blocks from tumour sections. Quantitative determination of p27kip1 expression was based on the proportion of p27kip1 -positive cells (< 5%= negative). Survival analysis was carried out using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model. Results. Positive p27kip1 expression was detected in 22 tumours (49%), whereas 23 tumours (51%) were p27kip1 -negative. There were no significant correlations between p27kip1 index and stage or lymph node involvement. Median survival time in patients with p27kip1 -positive tumours was 19 months, whereas in patients with p27kip1 -negative tumours it was 18 months (p=0.53). A significant relationship was found between p27kip1 -negative tumours and radical resection (p=0.04). Multivariate survival analysis revealed that the localization of the tumour (pancreatic head/uncinate process vs periampullary) was the only significant and independent prognosticator (p=0.01, Cox regression model). Resection margins involvement and grade remained nearly significant prognostic factors (p=0.07 and p=0.09, respectively). Conclusion. We conclude that p27kip1 has limited overall prognostic utility in resected carcinoma of the pancreatic head region, but its potential role as a marker of residual disease needs to be further assessed.     The Effect of Excessive Crying on the Development of Emotion Regulation

    The goal of this study was to examine the effect of excessive crying in early infancy on the development of emotion self-regulation. Cry diaries were used to categorize excessive criers and typical criers at 6 weeks of age. At 5 and 10 months of age, infants and mothers participated in procedures to elicit infant reactivity and regulation during a frustration task and maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness during a free-play session. Last, maternal ratings of temperament were obtained. Results revealed excessive criers to show higher levels of negative reactivity than typical criers. Excessive criers also demonstrated lower regulation, but this finding was only significant for male infants. Boys in the excessive criers group exhibited the lowest level of emotion self-regulation. Maternal behavior and ratings of temperament at 5 and 10 months failed to distinguish the 2 cry groups. The findings suggest that excessive crying may influence the developmental trajectory of the ability of boys to self-regulate emotion. The hypothesized processes involved in this outcome are discussed. [source]


    Fear, worry, and ritualistic behaviour in childhood: developmental trends and interrelations

    Abstract Previous studies of childhood fear, worry, and ritualistic behaviour have been limited by restricted age ranges, narrow ranges of anxiety phenomena, non-comparable methodologies, and assessment of typical behaviour within a pathological context. Content and intensity of fear, worry, and ritualistic behaviour, and associations among these variables, were assessed through a semi-structured interview individually administered to 142 children aged 7,16 years. Common themes in the content of fear, worry, and ritualistic behaviour varied predictably with age. Intensity ratings for all three phenomena decreased with age, although this decline was only significant between 7 and 10 years. Levels were higher in girls than boys. Fear and worry were positively related, and the regular performance of rituals was related to anxiety across the age range. Worry was more strongly related than fear to engagement in ritualistic behaviour. We consider implications for the understanding of anxiety and ritualistic behaviour in typical and atypical development. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


    Relation between Holstein bulls' proofs for milk in USA and the survival and body weights up to 18 months of their F1 zebu progeny in Venezuela

    Summary The purpose of the study was to determine the relation between Holstein bulls' proofs for milk in USA, and the survival and body weights of their F1 progeny under lowland grazing conditions in Venezuela. Semen was selected from sires with the highest proofs available locally (class H, n = 23) or with proofs close to the breed average (class A, n = 18). Mean proofs were 934 kg (H) and 237 kg (A), respectively, when semen was purchased (1989,93), falling to 204 and ,386 kg when updated in 2001. Dams were Brahman-type zebus on seven farms, raising the F1 progeny (n = 866) on native or cultivated pasture with only mineral supplements. Records of survival to 8 and 18 months and weights at birth, 8 and 18 months of age were analysed using linear models. Sire class had no effect on survival or weight at birth, but H progeny were slightly heavier than A progeny at 8 (4.0%, p = 0.06) and 18 months (2.6%, p < 0.05). The interaction class × farm was only significant for survival, with H progeny equal or superior to A groups on six farms. The effect of sire within class was highly significant for survival to 8 months and weight at 18 months. Rank correlations using sires' milk proofs and F1 progeny weights and survival were not significant. It was concluded that the use of Holstein bulls with high milk proofs may lead to slightly higher 18-month weights in their F1 progeny in tropical grazing systems, covering the additional cost of H semen, but that sire evaluation for weight gain and progeny survival rates may be justified under these conditions. Ausgewählt wurde das Sperma von lokal verfügbaren Bullen mit den höchsten Zuchtwerten (Klasse H, n = 23) oder mit Zuchtwerten, die eng am Populationsdurchschnitt (Klasse A, n = 18) lagen. Beim Erwerb des Spermas (1989,1993) betrugen die mittleren Zuchtwerte 934 kg (H) beziehungsweise 237 kg (A), die bei der Neubewertung 2001 auf 204 kg und ,386 kg abfielen. Die Kühe waren Zebus im Brahman-Typ von sieben Farmen, die die F1-Nachkommen (n = 866) auf natürlichen oder kultivierten Weiden nur mit zusätzlichem Mineralfutter aufzogen. Das Überleben mit acht und 18 Monaten und das Gewicht bei der Geburt, mit acht und mit 18 Monaten wurde mittels linearer Modelle analysiert. Die Bullenklasse zeigte keinen Effekt auf das Überleben und das Geburtsgewicht, aber die H-Nachkommen waren mit acht (4%, p = 0,06) und 18 Monaten (2,6%, p < 0,05) etwas schwerer als die A-Nachkommen.     Evolution of blood parameters during weight loss in experimental obese Beagle dogs

    Summary The effects of weight loss on hormonal and biochemical blood parameters were measured monthly [carnitine, creatinine, urea, free T4 (fT4), total T4 (TT4), plasma alkaline phosphatases (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), potassium and total proteins] or bimonthly [cholesterol, triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), glucose, insulin] in eight obese Beagles dogs fed either a high protein dry diet, DP (crude protein 47.5%, on dry matter basis) or a commercial high fibre diet, HF (crude protein 23.8%, crude fibre 23.3%). The dogs were allotted to two groups according to sex and body weight (BW) and they were respectively fed with the DP or the control HF diet during 12,26 weeks, until they reach their optimal BW. The plasma basal triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations were decreased by the two diets but the difference was only significant for the DP diet. The plasma mean NEFA concentration increased regularly over the period with the HF diet, without significant difference between the two diets. No effect of diet or weight loss was observed on plasma carnitine, urea, creatinine, ALP, AST, ALT, potassium, TT4, FT4, IGF-I, glucose and insulin. Weight loss induced a decrease in fT4 plasma concentration (p < 0.001). The high protein diet allowed a safe weight loss. [source]


    Quantifying the grazing impacts associated with different herbivores on rangelands

    Summary 1Rangelands, produced by grazing herbivores, are important for a variety of agricultural, hunting, recreation and conservation objectives world-wide. Typically, there is little quantitative evidence regarding the magnitude of the grazing impact of different herbivores on rangeland habitats to inform their management. 2We quantified the grazing and trampling impact of sheep, cattle, red deer Cervus elaphus, rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus, mountain hares Lepus timidus and red grouse Lagopus lagopus on open-hill habitats in 11 areas of upland Scotland. The degradation of heather in upland Scotland Calluna vulgaris -dominated habitats, of conservation significance at a European scale, has been attributed, anecdotally, to increasing sheep and red deer populations. 3Field indicators of habitat condition were used to generate a five-point scale of impact in vegetation polygons of seven habitats. The presence of each herbivore species was attributed on the basis of ,signs' of occupancy. A Bayesian regression model was used to analyse the association of herbivore species with grazing impact on plant communities, controlling for environmental attributes. 4Overall the presence of sheep was associated with the largest increase (7/11 areas) in grazing and trampling impact of all herbivores. Cattle had the second largest impact but generally this was restricted to fewer areas and habitats than sheep. In contrast, impacts associated with wild herbivores tended to be small and only significant locally. 5Although red deer presence was associated with a significantly lower impact than sheep, this impact increased with increasing deer density at both land-ownership and regional scales. For sheep there was little or no evidence of density dependence. 6Synthesis and applications. The higher impact associated with sheep presence probably reflects their greater aggregation because of their limited ranging behaviour, exacerbated by sheep being herded in places convenient for land managers. Consequently, future reductions in sheep numbers as a result of reform of European Union farming policies may limit the extent of their impact, but not necessarily the local magnitude. However, reductions in sheep stocks may lead to increases in deer densities, with greater impact, particularly in heather-dominated habitats. Where habitat conservation is a priority this may well require a reduction in deer numbers. [source]


    Is a School-Based Physical Activity Intervention Effective for Increasing Tibial Bone Strength in Boys and Girls?,

    Abstract This 16-month randomized, controlled school-based study compared change in tibial bone strength between 281 boys and girls participating in a daily program of physical activity (Action Schools! BC) and 129 same-sex controls. The simple, pragmatic intervention increased distal tibia bone strength in prepubertal boys; it had no effect in early pubertal boys or pre or early pubertal girls. Introduction: Numerous school-based exercise interventions have proven effective for enhancing BMC, but none have used pQCT to evaluate the effects of increased loading on bone strength during growth. Thus, our aim was to determine whether a daily program of physical activity, Action Schools! BC (AS! BC) would improve tibial bone strength in boys and girls who were pre- (Tanner stage 1) or early pubertal (Tanner stage 2 or 3) at baseline. Materials and Methods: Ten schools were randomized to intervention (INT, 7 schools) or control (CON, 3 schools). The bone-loading component of AS! BC included a daily jumping program (Bounce at the Bell) plus 15 minutes/day of classroom physical activity in addition to regular physical education. We used pQCT to compare 16-month change in bone strength index (BSI, mg2/mm4) at the distal tibia (8% site) and polar strength strain index (SSIp, mm3) at the tibial midshaft (50% site) in 281 boys and girls participating in AS! BC and 129 same-sex controls. We used a linear mixed effects model to analyze our data. Results: Children were 10.2 ± 0.6 years at baseline. Intervention boys tended to have a greater increase in BSI (+774.6 mg2/mm4; 95% CI: 672.7, 876.4) than CON boys (+650.9 mg2/mm4; 95% CI: 496.4, 805.4), but the difference was only significant in prepubertal boys (p = 0.03 for group × maturity interaction). Intervention boys also tended to have a greater increase in SSIp (+198.6 mm3; 95% CI: 182.9, 214.3) than CON boys (+177.1 mm3; 95% CI: 153.5, 200.7). Change in BSI and SSIp was similar between CON and INT girls. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a simple, pragmatic program of daily activity enhances bone strength at the distal tibia in prepubertal boys. The precise exercise prescription needed to elicit a similar response in more mature boys or in girls might be best addressed in a dose,response trial. [source]


    Conflict resolution in women is related to trait aggression and menstrual cycle phase

    Abstract Twenty-four women with a diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and 18 controls took part in a study of patterns of female aggression. They completed a version of the Conflict Tactics Scale for a premenstrual and a follicular phase of their menstrual cycle and for the past year. The Life History of Aggression was completed during a clinician interview. The women used more aggressive tactics to solve conflicts in the premenstrual than in the follicular phase, but the difference was only significant for the PMDD group. During the past year, reasoning was the most common strategy used by women to resolve conflicts, but verbal aggression was also prevalent. Although physical violence was less common, the prevalence of any act of violence was 33% in the controls and 62% in the clinical group. Women with PMDD used both verbal and physical aggression more frequently than the controls and had a higher lifetime history of aggression.     Stress-induced dynamic adjustments of reproduction differentially affect fitness components of a semi-arid plant

    Summary 1Summer drought stress is considered the primary constraint to plant performance in Mediterranean ecosystems. However, little is known about the implications of summer stress for plant reproduction under real field conditions and, particularly, for the regulatory mechanisms of maternal investment in reproduction. 2The relationship between plant physiological status at different reproductive stages over the course of the summer drought period and final reproductive output was modelled in the Mediterranean semi-arid specialist Helianthemum squamatum. 3Plant physiological status, assessed by the chlorophyll fluorescence-based parameter Fv/Fm, and soil moisture content beneath each plant, were determined in the field at five key phenological moments in a total of 88 plants. We used Generalized Linear Mixed Models to evaluate the effect of plant physiological status at those different dates on several components of reproduction (number of flowers and seeds per plant, fruit-set and intra-fruit seed abortion). We included soil moisture as an additional predictor to statistically control its potential effect on reproduction. 4Fv/Fm measured at midday was a significant predictor of reproductive output, but its significance varied over time and with the specific reproductive response variable. Fv/Fm measured at the onset of flowering was positively related to the number of flowers and seeds per plant, whereas Fv/Fm at the fruiting peak positively affected fruit-set. Soil moisture content was only significant when measured before flowering, being positively related to total flowers and seeds. The effect of stress on reproductive output acted either at an early stage of the reproductive season, by varying the number of flowers produced and seed primordia initiated, or at a later stage, by adjusting the number or ripe fruits. 5Synthesis. Our results show a direct relationship between physiological status and reproduction, and highlight the importance of the timing of stress for reproductive success. They also show that small departures from the physiological optimum at specific reproductive stages may cause significant decreases in the reproductive output. We suggest that the dynamic adjustment of reproduction in response to stress is adaptive in fluctuating and unpredictable Mediterranean semi-arid environments, where an adequate temporal distribution of maternal resources determines the species' ability to withstand severe environmental conditions.     ANTIOXIDATIVE AND ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF LACTOFERRIN IN HOT-BONED GROUND PORK DURING STORAGE

    ABSTRACT The effect of lactoferrin concentration on the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of hot-boned (4,5 h after death) ground pork during storage at 4C for 9 days was examined. The total iron content increased with the addition of lactoferrin. Meat samples with added lactoferrin (40 or 80 mg/kg) had lower thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) than controls at 3, 6 and 9 days; however, the differences in TBARS between the 40- and 80-mg lactoferrin/kg treatments were not significant. With the addition of lactoferrin (40 or 80 mg/kg), ground pork had lower (P < 0.05) total plate counts than controls at 3, 6 and 9 days of storage. However, the differences in total plate counts between the 40- and 80-mg lactoferrin/kg treatments were only significant (P < 0.05) at days 3 and 6. The addition of lactoferrin (80 mg/kg) decreased lactic acid bacterial counts at days 0, 3 and 9. The pH values of hot-boned ground pork were unaffected by the addition of lactoferrin, but slightly increased with storage time. [source]


    Population dynamics of cereal aphids: influence of a shared predator and weather

    Abstract 1,Aphid populations may show strong year-to-year fluctuations, but questions remain regarding the dominance of factors that cause this variation, especially the role of natural enemies. To better understand the dynamics of aphid species that occur as pests in cereals, we investigated the relative influence of top-down control by a predator and weather (temperature and precipitation) on population fluctuations of three cereal aphid species. 2,From 1987 to 2005, populations of Metopolophium dirhodum, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi in insecticide-free stands of winter wheat were monitored in the Praha-Ruzyné region of the Czech Republic. Densities of an aphidophagous predator, the ladybeetle Coccinella septempunctata, were recorded from an overwintering site in the landscape. Weather was quantified using historical records. 3,A significant bottom-up effect of densities of aphids on those of C. septempunctata was found, but evidence of direct top-down regulation of aphids by C. septempunctata was only significant in the case of R. padi. There was no significant periodicity in the dynamics of the aphid or C. septempunctata, suggesting that there was no clear predator-prey cycle. Combinations of C. septempunctata and weather variables could be used to explain M. dirhodum and R. padi per capita rate of change. There were also indications that weather directly affected peak density of M. dirhodum. 4,We conclude that regional estimates of C. septempunctata densities are not sufficient to determine whether aphid population dynamics are driven by predator,prey interactions. Feasibility of time series analysis as an investigative tool in aphid population dynamics studies is discussed. [source]


    Inverse relationship between circulating levels of leptin and bone mineral density in chronic liver disease

    Abstract Background and Aim: The pathophysiology of osteoporosis complicating chronic liver disease is unknown. Recent animal studies have found leptin to be a potent inhibitor of bone formation. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum leptin levels and bone mineral density in patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: Fifty-eight patients, 39 females and 19 males, and age- and gender-matched controls were included. Bone mineral density was measured by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum leptin was measured by using a radioimmunoassay. Results: The mean serum leptin concentration was 10.4 ± 11.3 and 15.2 ± 17.9 ng/mL; P = 0.11, in the patients and controls, respectively. Leptin correlated positively with body mass index in patients (r = 0.40; P = 0.003) and in controls (r = 0.55; P < 0.0001). In patients classified as Child,Pugh grade B and C, serum leptin correlated negatively with bone mineral density in females at both the lumbar spine and the femoral neck (r = ,0.78; P = 0.04 and r = ,0.86; P = 0.03, respectively). In male patients, the correlation was only significant at the lumbar spine (r = ,0.99; P = 0.002 and r = ,0.86; P = 0.06, at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, respectively). No correlation was found between serum leptin and bone mineral density in the controls. Conclusion: An inverse relationship between serum leptin and bone mineral density was found in patients with advanced chronic liver disease. The reasons for these findings are uncertain, but a pathophysiological role of circulating leptin in osteoporosis in chronic liver disease is possible. [source]


    Quantitative Trait Loci for Panicle Layer Uniformity Identified in Doubled Haploid Lines of Rice in Two Environments

    Abstract Uniformity of stem height in rice directly affects crop yield potential and appearance, and has become a vital index for rice improvement. In the present study, a doubled haploid (DH) population, derived from a cross between japonica rice Chunjiang 06 and indica rice TN1 was used to analyze the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for three related traits of panicle-layer-uniformity; that is, the tallest panicle height, the lowest panicle height and panicle layer disuniformity in two locations: Hangzhou (HZ) and Hainan (HN). A total of 16 QTLs for three traits distributed on eight chromosomes were detected in two different environments. Two QTLs, qTPH -4 and qTPH -8 were co-located with the QTLs for qLPH -4 and qLPH -8, which were only significant in the HZ environment, whereas the qTPH -6 and qLPH -6 located at the same interval were only significant in the HN environment. Two QTLs, qPLD -10-1 and qPLD -10-2, were closely linked to qTPH-10, and they might have been at the same locus. One QTL, qPLD -3, was detected in both environments, explaining more than 23% of the phenotypic variations. The CJ06 allele of qPLD -3 could increase the panicle layer disuniformity by 9.23 and 4.74 cm in the HZ and HN environments. Except for qPLD -3, almost all other QTLs for the same trait were detected only in one environment, indicating that these three traits were dramatically affected by environmental factors. The results may be useful for elucidation of the molecular mechanism of panicle-layer-uniformity and marker assisted breeding for super-rice. [source]


    Genetic Diversity and Association Analysis for Salinity Tolerance, Heading Date and Plant Height of Barley Germplasm Using Simple Sequence Repeat Markers

    Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of barley accessions. Additionally, association trait analysis was conducted for grain yield under salinity, heading date and plant height. For this purpose, 48 barley genotypes were analyzed with 22 microsatellite simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Four of the 22 markers (Bmac316, scssr03907, HVM67 and Bmag770) were able to differentiate all barley genotypes. Cluster and principal coordinate analysis allowed a clear grouping between countries from the same region. The genotypes used in this study have been evaluated for agronomic performance in different environments. Conducting association analysis for grain yield under salinity conditions using TASSEL software revealed a close association of the marker Bmag749 (2H, bin 13) in two different environments with common significant alleles (175, 177), whereas the HVHOTR1 marker (2H, bin 3) was only significant in Sakhar_Egypt with alleles size being 158 and 161. Heading date also showed an association with scssr03907 through the common significant specific allele 111 and EBmac0415 markers in three different agro climatic locations, whereas HVCMA, scssr00103 and HVM67 were linked to heading date in the Egyptian environment only. The plant height association analysis revealed significant markers Bmag770 via the significant allele 152 and scssr09398. [source]


    Economic Crisis and Marital Problems in Turkey: Testing the Family Stress Model

    This paper applied the family stress model to the case of Turkey in the wake of the 2001 economic crisis. Using structural equation modeling and a nationally representative urban sample of 711 married women and 490 married men, we tested whether economic hardship and the associated family economic strain on families resulted in greater marital problems. Our results showed a modified family stress model applies to Turkey. In contrast to most previous research, economic strain had a direct effect on marital problems, and the indirect effect of strain, via emotional distress, was only significant for women. The results were interpreted in light of social and cultural factors that condition how economic distress affects marital relations. [source]


    Prophylaxis of infection and effects on osseointegration using a tobramycin-periapatite coating on titanium implants,An experimental study in the rabbit

    Abstract No options are available for local antibiotic delivery from uncemented implants. By loading a porous titanium implant with a biomimetic HA-coating (PeriApatite, PA) with antibiotics, we could obtain adequate local antibiotic concentrations and reduce infection susceptibility. This study investigated the efficacy of a tobramycin-loaded PA-coated titanium foam implant in preventing infection, as well as the effects on osseointegration. In 72 New Zealand White rabbits, an uncoated (Ti), PA-coated (PA), or Tobramycin-PA-coated (PA-tobra) titanium foam rod was implanted intramedullary in the left tibiae after contamination of the implant bed with none (control), 103, 104 or 105 CFU Staphylococcus aureus. PA-tobra implants were loaded with 2.4 mg tobramycin. After 28 days analysis was done by bacteriology, histopathology and histomorphometry. Six percent of the contaminated PA-tobra rabbits were infected, whereas this was 53 and 67% for PA and Ti, respectively (p,<,0.001). Quantitative cultures were also significantly lower in the PA-tobra group (p,=,0.003). None of the control rabbits were infected. Histopathological and histomorphometrical scores were both better for the PA-tobra group, although only significant compared to Ti. No significant differences were observed between PA and Ti rabbits. We conclude that the application of tobramycin to PA-coated titanium foam implants appears to be an effective local antibiotic strategy for uncemented implants for infection prophylaxis and has a beneficial effect on implant fixation, which will result in improved long-term implant survival. © 2008 Orthopaedic Research Society.     The initial phase of fracture healing is specifically sensitive to mechanical conditions

    Abstract Interfragmentary movements affect the quality and quantity of callus formation. The mounting plane of monolateral external fixators may give direction to those movements. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of the fixator mounting plane on the process of fracture healing. Identically configured fixators were mounted either medially or anteromedially on the tibiae of sheep. Interfragmentary movements and ground reaction forces were evaluated in vivo during a nine week period. Histomorphological and biomechanical parameters described the bone healing processes. Changing only the mounting plane led to a modification of interfragmentary movements in the initial healing phase. The difference in interfragmentary movements between the groups was only significant during the first post-operative period. However, these initial differences in mechanical conditions influenced callus tissue formation significantly. The group with the anteromedially mounted fixator, initially showing significantly more interfragmentary movements, ended up with a significantly smaller callus diameter and a significantly higher callus stiffness as a result of advanced fracture healing. This demonstrates that the initial phase of healing is sensitive to mechanical conditions and influences the course of healing. Therefore, initial mechanical stability of an osteosynthesis should be considered an important factor in clinical fracture treatment. © 2003 Orthopaedic Research Society.     Investigating science learning for rural elementary school teachers in a professional-development project through three distance-education strategies

    Distance education is a significant topic of discussion within institutions at all levels of education. It is not only significant in terms of finances and student enrollment but also in terms of meaningful learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness of three distance-education strategies for enhancing the science learning of 94 Midwestern elementary-school teachers participating in a 5-year professional-development project. The three distance-education strategies studied were interactive television with all presenters live in real time (live), interactive television with live discussions wrapped around videotaped presentations (video), and asynchronous, Web-based sessions with streamed videotaped presentations supported by interaction through discussion boards (Web). A repeated measures design was used to analyze the science learning and attitudes of the study participants. Analysis of variance of participants' postsession science scores yielded differences (p,<,0.05) on multiple-choice and constructed-response science subscales. Participants in the live mode outperformed participants in the Web and video modes on all three assessment types (multiple choice, constructed response, and vignettes).     Electrodermal activity during total sleep deprivation and its relationship with other activation and performance measures

    The present study analyses the variations of the skin resistance level (SRL) during 48 h of total sleep deprivation (TSD) and its relationship to body temperature, self-informed sleepiness in the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS), and reaction time (RT). All of the variables were evaluated every 2 h except for the SSS, which was evaluated every hour. A total of 30 healthy subjects (15 men and 15 women) from 18 to 24 years old participated in the experiment. Analyses of variance (ANOVAs) with TSD days and time-of-day as factors showed a substantial increase of SRL, SSS, and RT, and a decrease in body temperature marked by strong circadian oscillations. The interaction between day by time-of-day was only significant for RT. Furthermore, Pearson's correlations showed that the increase of SRL is associated to the decrease in temperature (mean r=,0.511), the increase of SSS (mean r=0.509), and the deterioration of RT (mean r=0.425). The results support previous TSD reports and demonstrate the sensitivity of SRL to TSD. The non-invasive character of SRL, its simplicity, and its relationships with other activation parameters, widely validated by previous literature, convert SRL into an interesting and useful measure in this field.     The effect of delayed harvest on moisture content, insect damage, moulds and aflatoxin contamination of maize in Mayuge district of Uganda

    Abstract Field drying is a traditional practice carried out by farmers in Uganda and it is one of those practices reported to affect the postharvest quality of maize. A study was therefore conducted to establish the effects of delayed harvest on moisture content, insect damage, moulds and aflatoxin contamination of maize in Mayuge district. Sixteen farmers were selected from Bayitambogwe sub-county, eight from each of the villages of Bugodi and Musita. Maize was sampled from each farmer's field in 2003B and 2004A seasons at harvest stages of physiological maturity and after delayed harvest for 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. Each sample was analysed for mould incidence, moisture content, insect damage and aflatoxin contamination. In each season, mould incidence, insect damage and aflatoxin levels significantly (P < 0.05) increased with delayed time of harvest. Moisture content reduced with delayed harvest time but the maize did not dry to the required safe storage moisture content of ,15%. Seasonal effects were only significant for moisture content: the 2003B crop had consistently lower moisture content than 2004A crop. These results indicate that, for improved harvest quality of maize, farmers should harvest no later than 3 weeks after maize has attained physiological maturity.     The fate of seeds in Mediterranean soil seed banks in relation to their traits

    Abstract Question: Is there any change in seed density and species richness in Mediterranean surface soil banks during summer? Are there any relationships between these summer variations and seed traits (weight, length and shape), without and with controlling the phylogenetic effect? Location: Central Spain. Methods: Samples of the surface soil seed bank were collected in two Mediterranean systems, grassland and scrubland, at two points in the year: immediately after the summer production peak and immediately prior to the autumn germination peak. We used Canonical Correspondence Analysis ordination to check for changes in floristic composition and ANOVAs to check for changes in seed density and species richness between summer and autumn samples. We used multiple regression analysis to analyse the relationship between summer variations in soil seed density and form traits, with and without controlling phylogenetic relations. Results: Soil seed density dropped significantly during the summer in the two systems (28% in grasslands, repeated measures ANOVA test; F = 58.19, P < 0.01; 72% in scrublands, repeated measures ANOVA test; F = 75.67, P < 0.001). Species richness, however, only dropped significantly in the scrubland (32%; repeated measures ANOVA test; F = 9.17, P < 0.05). Variation in the floristic composition of the shallow banks was only significant in the scrubland. Changes in shallow bank density were related significantly to seed morphology features, with greater drops in species with heavier seeds in grasslands and species with longer seeds in scrubland. Conclusions: Our results show a substantial loss of seeds in the uppermost soil layer during the summer period between the point of peak production and the autumn germination peak. This drop was clearer in the scrubland than in the grassland. Longer and/or heavier seeds underwent the greatest declines in density at the end of summer, indicating a more intense effect of post-dispersal predation on large-seeded species. [source]

    ABSTRACT This paper examines the pretrial detention of juveniles in County X located in a northeastern state. The sample (N=642) included Black, White, and Hispanic males and females adjudicated delinquent in the summer of 2000. The following independent variables were analyzed with respect to the dependent variable of pretrial detention: age, sex, address, race, current offense (misdemeanors, violent misdemeanors, felonies, violent felonies, and probation violations), prior offense (misdemeanors, violent misdemeanors, felonies, and violent felonies), and previous dispositions (community or placement). Several variables were found to be significant in increasing the odds of pretrial detention: probation violations, prior misdemeanors, prior residential placements, prior community interventions, age, sex, urban address, felonies, prior violent misdemeanors, and prior violent felonies. It was expected that minority youths would be more likely to be detained, but race was only significant in the absence of the variable of address. Urban youths were more likely to be detained resulting in an over-representation of minorities in detention, since most of the minority population resides in the urban area.
