Selected AbstractsSUCCESSFUL ENDOSCOPIC SUBMUCOSAL DISSECTION FOR MUCOSAL CANCER OF THE DUODENUMDIGESTIVE ENDOSCOPY, Issue 1 2010Masahiro Shinoda We report a case of mucosal duodenal cancer in a 62-year-old woman, which was successfully removed en bloc by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The patient underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at our hospital, which revealed an elevated flat mucosal lesion (type IIa) measuring 10 mm in diameter in the second portion of the duodenum. Histopathological examination of a biopsy specimen revealed features suggestive of a tubulovillous adenoma with severe atypia. As the findings suggested that the lesion had an adenocarcinoma component but was confined to the mucosal layer, we decided to carry out ESD and successfully removed the tumor in one piece. The resected tumor was 20 × 15 mm in size. Histopathological examination revealed that the lesion was a well-differentiated mucosal adenocarcinoma with no lymphovascular invasion. Mucosal duodenal cancer is extremely rare, and ESD of a lesion in the duodenum requires a high level of skill. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the first report of successful ESD carried out in a case of mucosal duodenal cancer. [source] The importance of gel properties for mucoadhesion measurements: a multivariate data analysis approachJOURNAL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY: AN INTERNATI ONAL JOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE, Issue 2 2004Helene Hägerström ABSTRACT In this study we used tensile strength measurements and a recently developed interpretation procedure to evaluate the mucoadhesive properties of a large set of gel preparations with diverse rheological properties. Multivariate data analysis in the form of principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square projection to latent structures (PLS) was applied to extract useful information from the rather large quantities of data obtained. PCA showed that the selected series of gels was heterogeneous. Some groupings could be detected but none of the gels was identified as an outlier. By using PLS we investigated the relations between the rheological properties of a gel and the parameters defining the cohesiveness, as measured with the texture analyser used for the mucoadhesion measurements. The rheological properties proved to be important for the results of both the mucoadhesion and the cohesiveness measurements. Furthermore, by using PLS two different measurement configurations were evaluated and it was concluded that the combination of a relatively small volume of gel and two pieces of mucosa seems to be more appropriate than a large volume of gel in combination with one piece of mucosa. [source] A subtilisin-like serine protease essential for mucilage release from Arabidopsis seed coatsTHE PLANT JOURNAL, Issue 3 2008Carsten Rautengarten Summary During Arabidopsis seed development large quantities of mucilage, composed of pectins, are deposited into the apoplast underneath the outer wall of the seed coat. Upon imbibition of mature seeds, the stored mucilage expands through hydration and breaks the outer cell wall that encapsulates the whole seed. Mutant seeds carrying loss-of-function alleles of AtSBT1.7 that encodes one of 56 Arabidopsis thaliana subtilisin-like serine proteases (subtilases) do not release mucilage upon hydration. Microscopic analysis of the mutant seed coat revealed no visible structural differences compared with wild-type seeds. Weakening of the outer primary wall using cation chelators triggered mucilage release from the seed coats of mutants. However, in contrast to mature wild-type seeds, the mutant's outer cell walls did not rupture at the radial walls of the seed coat epidermal cells, but instead opened at the chalazal end of the seed, and were released in one piece. In atsbt1.7, the total rhamnose and galacturonic acid contents, representing the backbone of mucilage, remained unchanged compared with wild-type seeds. Thus, extrusion and solubility, but not the initial deposition of mucilage, are affected in atsbt1.7 mutants. AtSBT1.7 is localized in the developing seed coat, indicating a role in testa development or maturation. The altered mode of rupture of the outer seed coat wall and mucilage release indicate that AtSBT1.7 triggers the accumulation, and/or activation, of cell wall modifying enzymes necessary either for the loosening of the outer primary cell wall, or to facilitate swelling of the mucilage, as indicated by elevated pectin methylesterase activity in developing atsbt1.7 mutant seeds. Lucifora Abstract The feeding habits of the sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus, one of the most threatened sharks of the world, are poorly known. Sand tiger sharks are critically endangered in the South-west Atlantic. Since 2007, the law requires that all individuals caught in recreational fisheries off Argentina must be released. Using data from a north Patagonian recreational fishery (n=164 stomachs with contents), we analyzed the diet of sand tiger sharks in relation with size, sex, maturity stage and season; assessed prey consumption patterns and hooking location; and estimated diet overlap with fishery landings. Sand tiger sharks consumed mainly teleosts (55.4% of the total prey number, N) and elasmobranchs (41.84%N), and ate more benthic elasmobranchs (batoids and angel sharks) as they become larger. Sharks swallowed prey mostly in one piece (93.7%) and were hooked mainly in internal organs (87.4%, n=175), causing occlusion and perforation of the esophagus and stomach, and lacerations to the pericardium, heart and liver. Sand tiger sharks fed on the most heavily landed species, overlapping almost completely (>90%) with fishery landings. Conservation plans should take into account that releasing hooked sharks could be insufficient to minimize fishing mortality and that competition for food with fisheries is likely to occur. [source] |
