Kinds of Of Responses Selected AbstractsNetwork, exposure and rhetoric: Italian occupational fields and heterogeneity in constructing the globalized selfGLOBAL NETWORKS, Issue 4 2003Massimiliano Monaci Drawing on the findings of a broad inter-university research programme conducted in Italy, in this article we explore how individuals' transnational networks combine with other dimensions of their social experience in the production of a self-perception of their own ,global identity'. In particular, attention is focused on the structures and social spaces of everyday life in five crucial occupations (corporate managers, financial services workers, artists, media professionals and schoolteachers) where people's professional action is performed simultaneously along local and global axes. Within these groups the globalized self does not merely reflect individuals' engagement in transnational networks, but is also the outcome of a complex process including two added dimensions of social life in the job setting: (1) the degree and type of non-filtered exposure to pressures stemming from the global environment, which both constrain and enable subjective practices of coping with change and ambiguity; and (2) the degree and type of competence in the rhetorics of globalization, namely the level of access to well-known repertoires of interpretive resources for making sense of global trends. This analysis is consistent with social science conceptualizations arguing for a more nuanced understanding of globalization. In this light, not only is globalization a multidimensional process but it also produces a variety of responses and meanings by differently positioned actors. [source] Development, the state, and transnational political connections: state and subject formations in Latin AmericaGLOBAL NETWORKS, Issue 1 2001Sarah A. Radcliffe Focusing on the processes of making and sustaining transnational political ties between actors, international actors and states, this paper reviews recent work from a number of disciplines on globalization and politics, and outlines an agenda for future research. Rather than seeing transnational political linkages merely as forerunners to the loss of local sovereignty, the paper argues for a wider conceptualization of transnational connections, embedded within processes of state formation in Latin America. Using a variety of examples, it is argued that transnational networks are associated with a wide range of meanings and a variety of responses by diverse actors. Drawing on recent work in political science, post-structuralism and anthropology, it is suggested that geographical concepts - related to scale, process and networks - offer a means through which to analyze and ,map out' these transnational political processes. [source] Electrical activation of common bile duct nerves modulates sphincter of Oddi motility in the Australian possumHPB, Issue 4 2005Y. Sonoda Abstract Background: Sphincter of Oddi (SO) motility is regulated by extrinsic and intrinsic nerves. The existence of neural circuits between the SO and the proximal extrahepatic biliary tree has been reported, but they are poorly understood. Using electrical field stimulation (EFS), we determined if a neural circuit exists between the common bile duct (CBD) and the SO in anaesthetized Australian brush-tailed possums. Methods: The gallbladder, cystic duct or CBD were subjected to EFS with a stimulating electrode. Spontaneous SO phasic waves were measured by manometry. Results: EFS at sites on the distal CBD (12,20 mm proximal to the SO), but less commonly at more proximal CBD, evoked a variety of responses consisting of an excitatory and/or inhibitory phase. Bi-phasic responses consisting of an excitation followed by inhibition were the most common. Tri-phasic responses were also observed as well as excitation or inhibition only. These evoked responses were blocked by topical application of local anaesthetic to the distal CBD or transection of the CBD. EFS at sites on the gallbladder body, neck or cystic duct did not consistently evoke an SO response. Pretreatment with atropine or guanethidine reduced the magnitude of the evoked response by about 50% (p<0.05), pretreatment with hexamethonium had no consistent effect and pretreatment with a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor increased the response. Discussion: A neural circuit(s) between the SO and the distal CBD modulates SO motility. Damage to this area of the CBD during bile duct exploration surgery could adversely affect SO motility. Ellis Summary As current research illuminates the dynamic interplay between the innate and acquired immune responses, the interaction and communication between these two arms has yet to be fully investigated. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) and interferon-, (IFN-,) are known critical components of innate and acquired immunity, respectively. However, recent studies have demonstrated that these two components are not entirely isolated. Treatment of PMNs with IFN-, elicits a variety of responses depending on stimuli and environmental conditions. These responses include increased oxidative burst, differential gene expression, and induction of antigen presentation. Many of these functions have been overlooked in PMNs, which have long been classified as terminal phagocytic cells incapable of protein synthesis. As this review reports, the old definition of the PMN is in need of an update, as these cells have demonstrated their ability to mediate the transition between the innate and acquired immune responses. [source] Telomere Higher-Order Structure and Genomic InstabilityIUBMB LIFE, Issue 8 2003Terace Fletcher Abstract Telomeres, nucleoprotein complexes at the end of eukaryotic chromosomes, have vital roles in chromosome integrity. Telomere chromatin structure is both intricate and dynamic allowing for a variety of responses to several stimuli. A critical determinant in telomere structure is the G-strand overhang. Facilitated by telomeric proteins, the G-strand overhang stabilizes telomere higher-order assemblies most likely by adopting unusual DNA structures. These structures influence activities that occur at the chromosome end. Dysfunctional telomeres induce signals resulting in cell growth arrest or death. To overcome telomere dysfunction, cancer cells activate the DNA polymerase, telomerase. The presence of telomerase at the telomere may establish a particular telomeric state. If the chromosome ends of cancer and normal cells exist in different states, cancer-specific telomere structures would offer a unique chemotherapeutic target. IUBMB Life, 55: 443-449, 2003 [source] Conferencing in schools: punishment, restorative justice, and the productive importance of the process of conversation,JOURNAL OF COMMUNITY & APPLIED SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 5 2004Wendy Drewery Abstract During the decade to 1999 in New Zealand, schools experienced more than doubling of the rates of suspension and exclusion. The higher suspension rates of Maori, males and in low decile schools were of particular concern. The Ministry of Education enacted a variety of responses to this situation, including encouraging the use of restorative conferencing in schools. This article builds on learning from the Restorative Conferencing in Schools Trial and shows how the process of a conversation can be productive of more and less peaceable relationships. It is argued that school communities are uniquely placed in civic life, and that it is worthwhile considering restorative conferencing and restorative practices more generally in relation to their behaviour management and disciplinary functions. Restorative practices are advanced from a social constructionist position, which is a very different philosophy from the philosophy of punishment and judgement that dominates in many schools. [source] Vesicular release of glutamate mediates bidirectional signaling between astrocytes and neuronsJOURNAL OF NEUROCHEMISTRY, Issue 4 2007Yingchun Ni Abstract The major excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS, glutamate, can be released exocytotically by neurons and astrocytes. Glutamate released from neurons can affect adjacent astrocytes by changing their intracellular Ca2+ dynamics and, vice versa, glutamate released from astrocytes can cause a variety of responses in neurons such as: an elevation of [Ca2+]i, a slow inward current, an increase of excitability, modulation of synaptic transmission, synchronization of synaptic events, or some combination of these. This astrocyte-neuron signaling pathway might be a widespread phenomenon throughout the brain with astrocytes possessing the means to be active participants in many functions of the CNS. Thus, it appears that the vesicular release of glutamate can serve as a common denominator for two of the major cellular components of the CNS, astrocytes and neurons, in brain function. Haase Background:, Growth hormone (GH) is a potent regulator of bone formation. The proposed mechanism of GH action is through the stimulation of osteogenic precursor cell proliferation and, following clonal expansion of these cells, promotion of differentiation along the osteogenic lineage. Objectives:, We tested this hypothesis by studying the effects of GH on primary cell populations of human periodontal ligament cells (PLC) and alveolar bone cells (ABC), which contain a spectrum of osteogenic precursors. Methods:, The cell populations were assessed for mineralization potential after long-term culture in media containing ,-glycerophosphate and ascorbic acid, by the demonstration of mineral deposition by Von Kossa staining. The proliferative response of the cells to GH was determined over a 48-h period using a crystal violet dye-binding assay. The profile of the cells in terms of osteogenic marker expression was established using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteopontin, osteocalcin, bone sialoprotein (BSP), as well as the bone morphogenetic proteins BMP-2, BMP-4 and BMP-7. Results:, As expected, a variety of responses were observed ranging from no mineralization in the PLC populations to dense mineralized deposition observed in one GH-treated ABC population. Over a 48-h period GH was found to be non-mitogenic for all cell populations. Quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) BSP mRNA expression correlated well with mineralizing potential of the cells. The change in the mRNA expression of the osteogenic markers was determined following GH treatment of the cells over a 48-h period. GH caused an increase in ALP in most cell populations, and also in BMP expression in some cell populations. However a decrease in BSP, osteocalcin and osteopontin expression in the more highly differentiated cell populations was observed in response to GH. Conclusion:, The response of the cells indicates that while long-term treatment with GH may promote mineralization, short-term treatment does not promote proliferation of osteoblast precursors nor induce expression of late osteogenic markers. [source] The Court's Role in Promoting Comprehensive Justice for Pregnant Drug and Alcohol UsersJUVENILE AND FAMILY COURT JOURNAL, Issue 3 2008Tourine Johnstone ABSTRACT Drug use during pregnancy is an important social and medical issue. Legislatures and courts have offered a variety of responses, ranging from imprisonment to comprehensive service programs that are rehabilitative in nature. This article discusses the prevalence and effects of prenatal drug use, followed by a presentation of the scope of legal responses and treatment options. Some courts do not provide outreach services for drug-offending mothers, while others may offer a limited range of services. In contrast, a comprehensive justice approach would provide a wide range of health, employment, and social programs for the offender. This approach is based on philosophies of restorative justice, therapeutic jurisprudence, and procedural justice. Such a theory-based comprehensive justice program ultimately benefits mothers, children, and the community. Considerations are offered for judges who seek to implement a comprehensive justice approach to address this important problem. [source] |
